All photos in iphoto gone - is this really happening?

OK, i have searched all day about this but no answer is working, and I see this has happened to so many people but have not seen anything super recent so hopefully there has been a fix. I just upgraded to Mountain Lion after being on OS 6.8 for a long time. Everything seems to be fine, but when I go to open iPhoto all of my thousands of photos are gone and there is NO library it can even locate. I did manual searches and everything. What have I done??? My wedding photos my vacations everything.
Why should a simple upgrade erase all of my memories?
NO....i do not use Time Machine to back anything up so please tell me that they are still in the hard drive somewhere. Worst case scenario I did back my stuff up a few years ago to an external hard drive. I was literally just this morning going to upload everything to Backblaze.com but did this first.
I am feeling like a real idiot and wish I would have known not to upgrade.  Please someone help.

What version of iPhoto are you currently running?  What size does the Finder say your iPhoto Library is? By default it will be located in your Pictures folder.
It's probable that the library is damaged and your photos are still there.  Assuming you are running iPhoto 9 (11) do the following: apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with
Option #4 and then #1 as needed.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Where did you cut from?  The Finder for from within iPhoto?  If it was from the Finder you've damaged the library.  If from within iPhoto apply the two fixes below in order as needed:

  • How can I get all photos from iPhoto to automatically back up to iCloud from my Mac OSX Version 10.6.8 operating system.  Not enough memory to upgrade.

How can I get all photos from iPhoto to automatically back up to iCloud from my Mac OSX Version 10.6.8 operating system.  Not enough memory to upgrade.

You can't.  iCloud is not for general file backup from a Mac. It's for backup up and syncing data between mobile devices and and Macs and  The following is from this Apple document: iCloud: Backup and restore overview.
iCloud automatically backs up the most important data on your (mobile) device using iOS 5 or later. Once you have enabled Backup on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch .....
    What is backed up
You get unlimited free storage for:
Purchased music, movies, TV shows, apps, and books
Notes: Backup of purchased music is not available in all countries. Backups of purchased movies and TV shows are U.S. only. Previous purchases may not be restored if they are no longer in the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBookstore.
Some previously purchased movies may not be available in iTunes in the Cloud. These movies will indicate that they are not available in iTunes in the Cloud on their product details page in the iTunes Store. Previous purchases may be unavailable if they have been refunded or are no longer available in the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBookstore.
You get 5 GB of free iCloud storage for:
Photos and videos in the Camera Roll
Device settings (for example: Phone Favorites, Wallpaper, and Mail, Contacts, Calendar accounts)
    App data
    Home screen and app organization
    Messages (iMessage, SMS, and MMS)
    Ringtones
    Visual Voicemails
But not from a Mac.  If you want to backup your photos and other important files I suggest you get an external hard drive and use  it with Time Machine.

  • Not all photos in iphoto are syncing to ipad

I hope someone can help me with this!  I noticed that not all of my photos are syncing to my iPad (original) anymore even though I have "sync all" checked on the photos tab of my iPad in iTunes.  I have recently uploaded pictures from my sd-card onto my MacBook Pro from the little reader slot as well as photos from my iphone.  All of these photos are organized into Events in iPhoto.  My camera is about a year old so I've uploaded pictures many times before, but there are also pictures from two other cameras in the library.  There are pictures from the newer camera that HAVE synced onto the iPad.  For example, we have a ton of pictures from our trip to California (one event in iPhoto) last spring in which half of them show up on the iPad and the other half do not.
Also, if relevant, my iphone is about 2.5 years old (holding out for the new version!), and it seems like some of the pictures from the phone are synced onto the iPad from iPhoto and some aren't.
My ipad and laptop both have plenty of space for the pictures so I don't think that's the issue.
    Advice I've seen so far...
After searching through these boards and googling the issue, I've read a lot about deleting the iPod Photo Cache, but I don't know if this is really for the same issue.
Additionally, I found a post on another site that mentioned an issue if the images have the same file name.  It doesn't seem to matter to iPhoto if the names are the same, but it sounds like it may matter to the iPad (according to the one post that I read)?  If that's the case, I don't know how I would ever prevent this from happening because my DSLR will always number the pictures in order, which is what my Point & Shoots did as well.  I'm pretty sure that's standard for all cameras.  If I were taking a few pictures every so often, it wouldn't be a big deal to change the names of each image, but when I'm loading 500 pics at a time, which is generally the case, I can't rename them all.
Help with this is much appreciated!

If the file format is compatible with the iPad, the photos should sync. The camera will name the files automatically as far as I know and if you never changed the names before - and simply imported the photos into iPhoto, that shouldn't matter.
Deleting the iPod Photo Cache folder seems to work for many, many users with this problem. There is no guarantee that it will work, but it is easy to do and it's harmless since a new photo cache folder will be created when you sync again.
Here is an article that explains how to delete the folder and where itcan be found.

  • Photos from Iphoto gone need help

Yesterday I did apps updates on my macbook air (yosemite), after that i tried to open iphoto but with came up with a message that the library is rebuilding.
After that, a new folder with "recovered photos" came up but no photos are showing - its all blank.
I tried time capsule - not working. I tried the master folder and its not working. I really need all my photos as I have my photography deadline for university in 3 days, and all of my work was backed up on iphoto
Any help would be much appreciated
I am using OS x Yosemite 10.10.1 on macbook air from 2013, 1.3 Ghz Intel Core i5, 4GB memory, iphoto 9.6

    Again this is not clear
A Time Capsule is a piece of hardware that includes an airport router and a backup hard drive - it can be used as an external hard drive or it can be used as the location of your TimeMachine backup - how are you using it? If it is a TimeMachine backup then yu use TimeMachine to select and restore your desired library - Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support
Please explain exactly what you have and how you are using it - are you running Time Machine?

  • Somehow lost ALL photos in iphoto without deleting them

Somehow I lost ALL the photos in iphoto without deleting them. I was deleting word documents, as this computer belong to my sis-n-law. I restarted the computer and it went to the original factory state. My ical was back to factory. ALL my photos were gone!!! Not sure what I did. PLEASE HELP!!!
    Mac OS X Version 10.4.11. iMac, 7,1

What I was hoping to do is upgrade to Mac OS X Snow Leopard. I was removing old word documents that were my sister-n-laws, as this was her computer she used for work. So, there was a lot of stuff I didn't need and wanted to free up memory. I didn't delete any system files or anything like that. The next day I restarted the computer and it set everything back to the original factory state. ALL my photos were gone, my iCal was back to factory and my Safari bookmarks were gone. I did get back or found some documents I created. But Can't find or get back any of the Photos!

  • All photos in Iphoto on my 3GS are blurry after update

I synced my phone a couple of days ago and installed the new OS. That in itself was NOT FUN! Had to work my calendar for an hour... MOST IMPORTANTLY, my photos in iphoto on the phone are now all BLURRY!!!!
has this happened to anyone? DO i need to do a complete restore?
    really frustrating......

This is probably due to the photos not being sync yet so what you have are low res images on the memory of the iPhone. to solve it:
    1) connect iPhone to computer
    2) open iTunes
    3) go to the "photos" tab
    4) make sure the right folders are checked
    5) synch again
    I hope this helps

  • Deleted all photos in iPhoto, but library is still 30GB

    Hi,
I started using iPhoto when I first got my Macbook Pro in January. I have since purchased Aperture and I imported all my photos from iPhoto into Aperture. I just left the photos alone in iPhoto, but I decided that Aperture is doing it for me and wanted to delete all the photos in iPhoto. I did this, but my iPhoto library is still nearly 30GB in size!?! I deleted the trash and here are no photos visible in the iPhoto application, yet it's still 30GB in size. I don't understand. Can someone help?
What happens if I just delete the iPhoto library from my Pictures folder in the Finder? Would that work?
    Thank you,
    Scotty

Given that you tried to delete that amount of data from iphoto in one go it's very possible that the db was corrupted and it failed to clear out all the files.
What happens if I just delete the iPhoto library from my Pictures folder in the Finder? Would that work?
That's exactly the way to do it.
    Regards

  • IPhoto browser can't see all photos in iPhoto

When i use the iPhoto Browser only about half of the photos in iPhoto show up. I've seen some posts of similar issues but no clear resolution. Any ideas?

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Cannot open all photos in iphoto

Hi! I was wondering if anyone could help me. When I try to open the pictures in iphoto, nothing happens. The thumbnails are there, but if I try to edit them for example, the picture won't come up onto the screen. I tried going into pictures/library/preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist then trashing the plist. This resulted in almost all of my photos dissappearing! I had over 1600 photos now I am left with about 125 and most of those aren't even showing a thumbnail!! So, I went into pictures again and had a look in library and library1 and I can see that some of the 'missing' photos are there, however when I try to open them it says on some 'The alias "DSC003373.JPG" could not be opened because the original item cannot be found.' Have no idea where the original could possibly be either!! Some of them also come up with "Couldn't open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format that Preview doesn't recognise". Please please can someone help me! I would die if I have lost all of my photos! And, yes, I will be putting them onto discs from now on! Thanks a lot
    Fiona

    Fiona,
You can try and see if creating a new library will recover all the photos that you can't see in iPhoto.
    Close iPhoto
Rename your messed up iPhoto Library to "iPhoto Library_old"
Drag this library to your desktop
Hold down the Option key and launch iPhoto
This is the window you will get
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library
Once this new empty library is open it is time to import the images from your old library
    Go to File>add to library
Navigate to the old library on your desktop and highlight it in the window, then click the "open" button.
iPhoto will start importing the images from your old library
    This is what to expect:
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
Once all you images have been imported, check through the library and make sure everything looks ok.
You can now start making your Albums, and do your keywords or any other organizational steps.
You can also delete the old library on the desktop.
It is also a good time to backup this new library to CD/DVD by burning the iPhoto LIbrary folder in the Finder, or copying the iPhoto Library folder to an external drive formatted for Macs, or copying the iPhoto LIbrary folder to an iPod.
    Good luck!
