All ****'s broken loose on my MBP.  Need advice from the techno savvy!

I have a refurbished MBP that I bought about 2 weeks ago. (from an apple reseller) For the past 3 or 4 days, safari will just shut down randomly and the shutdowns have since increased in frequency. I downloaded Firefox to see if it was a Safari issue and Firefox shut down the same as Safari. Starting last night, I started getting this dark screen overlay and a message that OSX has quit working and I need to restart by pressing the power button. It has happened while using various applications with no pattern. When I restart the computer, I get an error screen that says that OSX had an unexpected error/shutdown and gives me the option to report it to Apple. I will include the problem details below. This afternoon, my optical drive quit working and the only way to get the CD out of the drive is to shut the computer down. Once I insert a CD, the drive keeps "revving", the keyboard backlight pulses with the revving, and it just doesn't sound good. There's no way to end it except hitting the power button. When I try to run Disk Utility, it shows that I have a lot of permissions that are broken, but then it gives me an error message and won't finish or repair them. If anyone has some advice, I'd appreciate it! I didn't get any OSX disks when I bought the computer, so I suspect it will have to be returned back to the shop. I thankfully bought their 2 year insurance that is supposed to cover everything that AppleCare would normally. It's a 2.33 HGz Intel Duo, 2GB. I'm not sure when it was originally released. I'm running 10.5.8 on it. Thanks to anyone who can give me some advice on what to do with it!
Rebecca

According to Mactracker, the 2.33 GHz processor is on the 15-inch and on the 17-inch Core 2 Duo, which was released in October 2006 and discontinued in June 2007. It was originally released with OS X 10.4.8.
You should have been given a set of the original gray system discs and a full retail Leopard disc.
The permissions issue is not something to be overly concerned about:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?viewlocale=en_US
Your computer has some serious issues, and without the discs and a working optical drive, it probably won't be possible to fix them. So the first thing is to go back to the shop and insist that they fix the optical drive and supply you with the discs that you should have.
Do you have a good backup or access to another Mac? If so, it might be possible to rescue any data on your Mac using FireWire Target Disk Mode:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
It's likely that your hard drive will need to be reformatted, which would destroy any data you may have on it. So it would be prudent to rescue anything you want to keep before taking it in.
Once you get it back, be sure to run the extended version of the Apple Hardware test, which will be on one of the original system discs.
Also, it wouldn't hurt to download and run this utility:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32454
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. It will give you a good analysis of the physical health of your hard drive. It may be that the drive has already been replaced, but if not and it is still the original, then it would be 3 or 4 years old by now. The average useful life of a notebook drive is 3-5 years.
You might also want to look at this article on kernel panics:
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
Do take it back to the shop and see what they will do for you. I agree with the possibility of getting a replacement machine or your money back if they can't give you the discs and fix the machine to your satisfaction.
Good luck!

  • HT1751 This was extremely helpful, however, all the songs I had unchecked in my library are now checked on on my new MacBook.  My playlists are all there, but I do I really need to uncheck the ~3,000 - 4,000 songs I had previously unchecked?

All the songs I had unchecked in my library are now checked on on my new MacBook.  My playlists are all there, but I do I really need to uncheck the ~3,000 - 4,000 songs I had previously unchecked?
My original library exists on my old computer, so I could still transfer it.   Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated - thank you!

This "original file cannot be found" thing happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

We are fellow users here on these forums, you're not talking to iTunes Support.
Did you try deleting the app and redownloading it via the Purchased tab in the App Store app on your iPad, and contacting the developer of the app ? If you did contact them and you didn't get a reply then try the 'report a problem' page to contact iTunes Support : http://reportaproblem.apple.com
If the 'report a problem' link doesn't work then you can try contacting iTunes support via this page : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/- click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption

  • I have multiple devices backed up to the same computer each with different data. how do i keep them from syncing all data when i back up or transfer stuff from the computer to a device?

i have multiple devices backed up to the same computer each with different data. how do i keep them from syncing all data when i back up or transfer stuff from the computer to a device? one is an iphone 6 and the others are ipad mini first gens, each ipad has 64gb and the iphone has 128, need to keep the data seperate as they are not all mine

Itunes content and pics are NOT part of the backup that itunes performs.
Backing up, updating, and restoring iPad, iPod touch, and iPhone software
You should transfer any purchases from iphone regularly:  File>Transfer Purchases  , if they fail to be transferred when you sync.
You buy one and only one download.  It is your responsibility to move/copy/backup your purchases.
You can try contacting itunes support and asking for an exception, but they are under no obligation to allow.

I do not know if your file can be recovered.  But I may be able help you to recreate it with ease.  If you will settle for a composite where all image are re-sized for a particular tile size and virtually cropped to its aspect ratio.  However all source image need be gathered into a folder to use my script process. • HT4859 I backedup iphone 4 and iphone 5 to icloud. I need contacts from the ipone 4 backup but I do not have that phone anymore and icloud will only let me restore the iphone 5's backups now. Is there anyway to get the contacts from my previous iphone 4?

I backedup my iphone 4 to the cloud before upgrading to an iphone 5. I also backedup my iphone 5 to icloud. I can see both phone's backups side by side on the my screen on icloud. But it will not allow me to restore the iphone 4 backup to my iphone 5.  I need contacts from the iphone 4 backup but I do not have that phone anymore and icloud will only let me restore the iphone 5's backups to my iphone 5. Is there anyway to get the contacts from my previous iphone 4 backup?

You should be syncing your contacts with an app on your computer or cloud service (iCloud, Gmail, Yahoo, etc), and not relying on a backup.  If you haven't been doing this, start now and then restore your old backup.  You will then be able to sync the new contacts back into the phone.  However, you will lose all messages, etc newer thant the backup.

You may need to reset PRAM/NVRAM.
First, check that the jack is clean. Put some alcohol on a plug and insert it a few times. See if that helps.
is your output both digital and analog? If digital, is the red laser light visible in the socket? Do not look directly into the socket when checking.
If all else fails try a PRAM reset:
    Reset your computer’s PRAM
A small amount of your computer’s memory, called “parameter random-access memory” or PRAM, stores certain settings in a location that Mac OS X can access quickly. The particular settings that are stored depend on your type of Mac and the types of devices connected to it. The settings include your designated startup disk, display resolution, speaker volume, and other information.
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Immediately press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Continue holding the keys down until the computer restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
DO NOT HOLD These keys beyond the second startup sound!
    Release the keys.
Resetting PRAM may change some system settings and preferences. Use System Preferences to restore your settings.

  • I installed hotspot shield on my 2009 macbook pro and all **** has broken loose on my computer in my attempts to rid my system of the app. Restoring to factory settings seems the only viable option. How do I do this?

I purchased the elite version of Hotspot Shield VPN only to found it is a wothless scam that drags down your computer. Unfortuantley its been nothing but a nightmare to get it out of my computer. Spents over a week combing through threads on what to do and amy ahve done more damage than anything else. It would appear that restoring my computer to its factory settings is the best thing in my current situation. Ive already lost all my photos and everything else of relevance, at least I hope, I have backed up in on an external disk. Could someone please guide me through this process? i just want to be done with this horribly frustrating situation. Thank you!

    Hey jollygreen666,
If you're ready to do a full restore on your computer, this is how you should go about it.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14243 - Erase and Install
    1. Power down your computer.
    2. Boot your computer holding either Command + R or Option. If you hold option you should see Macintosh HD and Recovery HD. Click on Recovery HD and press the arrow underneath to boot to recovery. If you hold Command + R you will go straight into recovery.
    3. To do a clean install, in the list of utilities, click Disk Utility. In disk Utility, you will see Macintosh HD or whatever you have named your hard drive.
    4. Click on Macintosh HD, and you'll see tabs along the top of disk utility. Press the Erase tab.
    5. For the Format box, select Mac OS X Extended (Journaled). In the name box you can leave Macintosh HD.
    6. Press Erase in the bottom right corner.
At this point you will have a blank hard drive, and you will be able to reinstall Mavericks clean without any extra data. To do so you would:
    1. Exit Disk Utility.
    2. In the menu, select Reinstall Mac OS X.
    3. Follow the prompts to reinstall OS X, and when it asks you where you want to install it, press Macintosh HD.
This will leave you with a clean install of Mavericks.
Since you don't know how deep this software has gone, I would suggest you manually migrate your data back over from your external hard drive to prevent files from the software from showing up again.
    Good luck!

  • IMac vs. MBP - Need advice.

I need some advice from Apple guru's... I have a 2009 MBP that no longer meets my needs (only 4g ram and 500g HD).  I have several large iphoto libraries and do lots with imovie.  I need more power!  I also travel some.
    So... MBP or iMac????????
iMac is crazy poweful and has up to 3 TB of memory.  I really hate using External Drives.... I want stuff local as much as possible. I probably have 1.5TB worth of stuff (photos and movies) since I have small kids.
rMBP has crazy power too and has up to 1TB of memory.  Therefore I would need to use some EHD.  But I can also travel with it.
Here is what I am thinking... am I crazy?:
    Buy both.
Have iMac as the 'mothership' where I keep all my movies and photos from all years, except the current year.
Have rMBP with current year's iphoto and imovie libraries... then move those libraries to the iMac at end of every year.  This will allow me to travel with it also.
Can I remote into an iMac from rMBP if I am a 1000 miles away and need something from it?
Two computers may make for confusion regarding what's on what machine.
Can you tell I am confused!!!!
    Thanks!

One thing you can try is calling Apple Customer Relations again at 800-767-2775, they might be more sympathetic to you this time. I would ask to be escalated to the next level and see if someone more senior can help.
I'm afraid that the problem at the root of this is the fact that you don't have Apple Care. Unfortunately, Apple respond very well indeed to those who do, but seem to to be able to do much to those outside the original warranty period.
I wish I could be more optimistic, you'll just have to charm the second lever person you speak to at Customer relations...

  • Hi all, as part of my job i need to educate the end users about BW..

    Hi All,
As a part of my job i need to educate the End users about the BW. So, for that purpose i need prepare on fine doucment which is easy to understand by end user community. Any documents about this will help a lot.
Could you pls send to this mail id [email protected]
Points will be awarded for this..
    thanks in advacne..
    Thanks & Regards,
    Suresh..

    Hi
I dont know what everyone is sending, but there is No standard BW end user manual. Every company / project has different requirements and the queries and reports generated contain different data. Its best to use one of the templates available in WIKI. A simple document for end users should contain screenshots of the query/application and steps taken in order to access the query. If you have sharepoint or some other shared directory you can also add screencam videos training users how to use the BW system. This has always been a good way to teach end users.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks

  • I need advice from those of you with a MBP!!!

I currently have a Core-Duo Macbook with 2GB RAM 2.0Ghz model. I am thinking about upgrading in the next six months or so to a MBP. I do a lot of photography work, and use garageband a decent amount. I would get the 15 in. model. Which processor though? 2.2? 2.4? 2.6? I will be upgrading the RAM and Hard drive myself. Also the issue of the glossy vs. matte. After using a macbook for nearly two years, would I be disappointed with the matte? will matte be better with the photo editing? Any input will be greatly appreciated, as those who own a MBP will know the most about them!

    Hi Judy:
Here's my take, from the vantage point of my new (10 days old) MBP:
I'm always bumping up against storage capacity, so I went for the 250 GB larger, but slightly slower, drive, but I have the 2.6 GHz processor. It's really a balancing act, and I had a certain dollar budget and no more, so that's how I balanced things. For most uses, I doubt I'd be able to perceive the difference between 2.2. and 2.6, or between the faster or slower hard drives.
What I CAN perceive is the difference between less RAM and more RAM, especialy if one is using Photoshop or other RAM intensive apps, so I maxed out the RAM at 4 GB (purchased from Crucial).
I haven't used Time Machine yet, but Time Machine resides on your laptop, so there's nothing to stop you from taking one you your external FW drives traveling with you and using it with Time Machine (or any other backup utility). I've also used old notebook harddrives in an OWC enclosure for a nice portable backup solution.
And the MBP comes with a DVI-VGA adapter to connect to your monitor.
Now for the fun part: accessories! I'm always financially challenged, so I just buy microfiber cloths in bulk and use a clean one with some water for my cleaning needs. And I'm also a fan of the piece of paper or card stock as a keyboard cover/screen protector when the screen is closed. That said, I'm seriously considering trying out a silicone keyboard protector (the kind you keep on as you type). My MBP is my only computer, I use it in lots of different work spaces, and I'm appalled at what I manage to get on and in my keyboard. (Without even considering the cats.)
I've never found much use for an extra battery, but I love having extra power adapters. That way, one can live in my bag, once can live in my studio, one can live by the couch . . . . etc. Having an extra--or extras--saves wear and tear on the cord and on my psyche.
And don't forget some sort of sleeve. I have a wonderful new rolling bag, with a vertical padded slot the MBP just slips into, but I use a sleeve when I carry the laptop by itself or when I want to just pop in into another bag. BuiltNY has some stylish and functional neoprene sleeves, and there are tons of sleeves from other vendors. The other advantage of a sleeve is that it helps insure that a sleeping laptop doesn't accidentally open.
It's good that you're getting AppleCare. As laptops get simultaneously smaller and more complex, the statistical odds of something failing within that three years are just higher than I care to risk. And if nothing else, AppleCare is a huge selling point if you decide to sell your machine.
This MBP is a "mature" release--refined and powerful and just a joy to use.

  • I have finally "freaked out" like others. Itunes keeps asking me to reset the password that is accepted by all. I went to Safari Privacy and third parties and advertisers is already clicked.  I need advice before the "ambulance" arrives. (joke)

I have the patience of Job.  Patience doesn't help when I can't sign in to iTunes without having my authentic password rejected and
told I need to reset it.  Since I have followed the advice from a community member to go to Privacy in Safari Browser and choose an
option other than Always. I have already clicked: Third Parties and Advertisers.  This is because I am "allergic" to advertisers.
Please help me to resolve this issue.  I need to log into itunes in order to make more efforts to delete music from my ipod.?
Many music selections are from a relative that had borrowed the ipod for the weekend. Many are in Japanese.  I am thrilled

    Welcome to the Apple community.
I'm not really sure what you did, however you can only purchase apps from the App Store not from individual websites. I've taken a look at the website myself and it does direct you to the App Store, is this what happened for you.

  • When syncing my iTunes to my iPad from the laptop, I get a list of missing songs; they are in the library, but not in the music folder on my HD. In particular, I uploaded 3 CDs at the same time, all are in my library - but two are missing from the folder.

When syncing my iTunes to my iPad from the laptop, I get a list of missing songs; they are in the library, but not in the music folder on my HD. In particular, I uploaded 3 CDs at the same time, all are in my library, and all synced to the iPad - but the music from two of them are missing from the music folder. Questions are (a) where might they have gone? and (b) is there a way of "reverse loading" them back to my hard drive from the iPad? Thanks in advance!

    Hi dones49,
It sounds like your issue here is that iTunes can not find the files for some of the songs you have brought into it. This happens occasionally even if the songs have not been moved from the location that iTunes places them on import or purchase. When you try to use the song, iTunes prompts you to find the file, as you have seen.
To find the file, use the information in this article to navigate through the iTunes media folders -
Locate and organize your iTunes files
If you are still unable to locate the files, you may need to download them from the iTunes store again, or rip them from your CDs. See this article for assistance with downloading your past purchases -
