All the fonts in the font menu within my Illustrator CS5 show up as invisible or blank.

This happens unless you hover your mouse over them, and then the highlighted font will be visible until you take your mouse off of it.  This has only happened after I updated to the new Yosemite OS on my MacBook Pro.  Does anyone else have the same issue and is there something I can do to fix it?

Scott,
You may wish to roll back from Yosemite and wait to see whether the issues will be solved and reported as such.
Weeding out in older plugins seems to have helped some in some cases. It also seems that JAVA Runtime may be involved, for some it seems to help to roll back to an ealier version, for others to update to the newest.
All the above is more or less hearsay so far, with no definite final confirmation.
In any case, there is something to be sorted out by someone.

  • I have no Scroll bar in the font menu in adobe illustrator CS5.1

    Is there any way to make this scroll bar appear? I can't each time try font by font to find the suitable one.

    Marilynn,
    Hopefully, you will not have to go far down this general list.
    You may try the following (you may have tried/done some of them already) and see whether it helps (the following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file; 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences):
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool, and reinstall.

  • The file is not readble - error message in Illustrator CS5

    My wife worked on an Illustrator CS5 file for an upcoming after school program last night, then saved and closed.  This morning she tried to fine tune it before work and was presented with this message in a pop-up . . . The file is not readable . . . and in the meantime, not only is her heart is in her throat but her assistant principal jumping up and down as if it she had done something wrong.  Since we use the original Illustrator CS at work I offered to try and help but of course, cannot open CS5 files.  Anyway, I promised to research and try to find a solution and am posting here following submitting a bug report to Adobe about the issue.
    Finally, is this rare or nearly unheard of?  I searched and found a similar thread back in May 2010 but sadly, didn't see a resolution.  On the other hand, I don't see these forums lit up with others suffering form this issue either and thus, presume this a weird one, or a one-off because everybody else isn't complaining.
    Any help or advice would be gratefully received.

    Happens occasionally, nothing special in CS5 to cause this. This document cover most of the things you can try:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/320/320318.html
    And also renamke your file to xxx.pdf and try to open in Acrobat, then so a save as newfilename.pdf try to open in Illustrator.

  • Can I execute a menu command in illustrator CS5 using extendscript

    I've seen it in Indesign but can't seem to get it to work in illustrator. If not could anyone tell me how I would group all items together on a layer run a function then ungroup them again. I'm fairlt new to this and struggle with the documentation
    Thanks

    Hi Bob,
    It's been a bit more difficult.
    (And there are already some handful Illustrator Scipters all over the world.)
    For the beginning you can try something like this:
    // https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1535178
    // MoveSimpleArtwork2NewGroup.jsx
    // regards pixxxelschubser
    var aDoc = app.activeDocument;
    aDoc.selectObjectsOnActiveArtboard();
    var sel = aDoc.selection;
    var newGroup = aDoc.groupItems.add();
    for (i=sel.length-1; i>=0; i--) {
        sel[i].moveToEnd(newGroup);
    alert("done");
    Have fun

    In the past I have always been able to adjust the memory of each individual application,
    my Adobe Illustrator CS5 appears that is doesn't have enough memory to complete a particular project.
    How do I boost the amount of memory that Illustrator uses so I can complete my project?

    With OS X, it automatically allocates RAM and it can't be allocated manually.
    What model Mac do you have and what OS X version is it running. Your profile shows a PowerMac and OS 10.6.8. A PowerMac can't run OS 10.6.8. It's max OS is 10.5.x
    How much RAM is installed in your Mac? You need to max out the RAM and close other open apps if you are having problems with Illustrator.

  • I can't change my font from the character menu, how do I fix this?

    Basically, the only way I can change my font is through the Type>Font menu up top (and by right clicking), but the list in the character palette and the control bar are empty. I can type in the name of the font I want and it will complete it, but even then it doesn't change anything. It is really inefficient for me to have to scroll through all the fonts every time, especially when I have no idea what font I want (or if the one I want is at the bottom of the list).
    It started doing this just out of the blue a few months ago, before then it was working fine, no idea what set it off. I can't print from Illustrator either, maybe it's part of the same problem (that started earlier).
    My version is CS2. Windows XP. I don't think that my boss is going to upgrade either in the near future. It's a small company, we don't have IT help.
    I've done some searching and have already tried:
    -uninstalling the old Illustrator 9 that was on here
    -deleting the aiprefs file
    -deleting the entire folder it was in
    -deleting all of the Adobefnt*.lst files I could find
    -restarting Illustrator, the computer several times
    I haven't tried reinstalling Illustrator yet. Don't know where the CD is, so it's a last resort.

    Oh dear. It looks like I have made things much, much worse.
    (I did indeed do my deleting with Illustrator closed, and tried moving before deleting)
    I opened it up again and did some work. I tried saving my file (in .ai format, variety of shapes, layers, fonts), when it told me that an unknown error occured, then another message that said something like "Can't finish previewing, not enough memory ID=-108", and then it crashed. Turns out that now it doesn't like fonts at all and it isn't too keen on shapes either.
    Found the CD. Uninstalled CS2, told it to delete my preferences file but keep the computer activated. Killed Adobe reader while I was at it (haven't reinstalled yet). Looked through my program files for any traces it left behind but didn't see anything (under Program Files>Adobe, and Documents and Settings>Application Data>Adobe). Restarted the computer and reinstalled Illustrator (well, I tried repairing first but that didn't do anything). And nothing has changed. Still can't access the fonts, and now I have errors opening/saving files too. There was another, new error, something something 6654 I believe.
    I'm baffled.

  • Can i change the behavior of the character menu so that the list begins with the current font selected and not at the beginning of the list?

    Im struggling with the way the font selection tab works in the character menu.
    When i scroll down the list and select minion halfway down the list, the next time i click on the font tab, the list starts back at the top of the list making me scroll down the list every time i want to look for a font.
    Can anyone offer some suggestions here?
    thanks
    jeff

    You can't do it exactly the way you want, but if you have InDesign CC or CC 2014, you can set fonts in the Character panel or Control panel Type menu to be Favorites. Click the "star" beside a font to set it as a favorite. Then at the top of the menu, click the "star" filter to show favorites in your list instead of a list of all the fonts.

  • How to resize the menu,address and bookmark toolbars. Not the font but the toolbar sizes

    I'm trying to reduce the overall space of the top of the firefox page.
    I have the menu and the the bookmarks tool bars checked and between those 2 and the address and site header it takes up way to much real estate.
    My font size is good but the wasted area is way to much and I can't seem to find the simple answer to looking for addons and themes to just resize the height of the space.
    This is the new 33.1 and up to this point all custom has been a breeze.
    Thanks much.

    Hello,
    Have you considered running Firefox in [[How to make Firefox and websites go full screen|Full Screen mode]]? There is also an extension that hides the toolbars until you hover your mouse over the top of the screen:
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/fullscreen-toolbar-hover/
    You can change the size of your toolbars by using the userChrome.css file, or by installing [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/stylish/ Stylish] and using one of these styles:
    * https://userstyles.org/styles/9349/navigation-location-bar-minimal-height
    * https://userstyles.org/styles/9350/menu-and-searchbar-minimal-height-dm
    * You can edit the code of the style to suit your needs better. I don't know how it will affect the current interface, so if you find that Firefox becomes unusable after using this style, load Firefox in [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode|Safe Mode]] and uninstall Stylish to remove it
    ** Alternatively, if the address bar still works, type in '''about:addons''' in your address bar, and go to the User Styles tab, then disable/remove the style
    For more information on userChrome.css:

  • How can you see what the actual fonts look like in menu?

    In WORD - when you go to the menu bar to see the fonts, you'll see maybe a hundred of them - but you see them the list in the "actual" font style of each font! So in a few seconds you can actually "see" a hundred font types - makes it easy to quickly select which one you like.
    I can't seem to do this in FCPro 5.04. I must click each font from the menu bar - type a word and THEN I see what it looks like. VERY TIME CONSUMING if you don't know your fonts!
    Isn't there a way in FCPro se see all the fonts in a list in the actual "style" of each font - like WORD does? There's a haxie called "Fontcard" that does exactly this - but not in FCPro!
    Can anybody do this - or I'm dreaming here - just keep checking them out 1 font at a time!!
    Thanks,
    Larry

    Larry,
    If you're not in too big a hurry when using Title 3D, you can scroll through the font list. As you go from one font to another, the characters you have highlighted will show in that font. Other than that, I use FontBook to preview fonts quickly.

    I got again a total system freeze today when I wanted to launch firefox using only the openbox menu, without wbar running.

    In the Xorg log, the differences are:

  • Vertical faded pink lines and pixelated fonts in the Menu, how to fix?

    Hi there,
    I bought my iMac in Jan 2010, and just after my Apple Care expired three years later I started to have some problems I have no idea how to fix, hope someone can help.
    When starting the computer, I get either a grey screen (I cannot go further or see anything else), or after starting the computer, seems like only the screensaver works, and if you try to open any menu, you'll get a black screen.
    All this happened right after the last update.
    I followed all the steps advised by Apple to fix the grey screen, but none of them worked.
    I also formatted the hard drive (I was using 10.8) and installed other OS (10.6).
    It worked well, except that I got now time vertical faded pink lines right after starting the computer, and the fonts in the menu looks like pixelated, they're not clear. but it only happens with the menu, Safari and other programs look fine.
    Any idea what's going on?

    This looks as though you may have a failing GPU.
    You can try these resets that may help, but it looks like a hardware failure.
    You may want to take it in to an Apple store genius bay, they will diagnose it for free and give you your options.

  • Illustrator CS5 is crashing every time I open the Font Menu

    I'm using one of the new Mac Book pro Retinas.  Every time I open the Type>Font menu the program crashes.  Sometimes I can scroll down a little ways but sometimes it crashes immediately.  Photoshop is loading the previews fine so I believe this is an illustrator problem and not a more general font problem.
    Thank you for your help.

    Ok, so I am now leaning towards a corrupt font also like Wade Z. suggested. A few things to try if you haven't first though.
    1.) Did you repair permissions using Disk Utility in the Applications > Utilities folder? I'd do that and run it a few times until it runs "clean". Meaning that you don't see it repair anything anymore in the list. (I'm assuming you're on a Mac). If you're on a PC this won't help.
    2.) You could try resetting the PRAM etc., but I don't think that will help this problem. Sometimes you never know though.
    So, if it is a corrupt font, I need to know if you are using a font management program or if you manually place them in font folders? (again assuming you're using a Mac). Post Script Type 1 fonts are known to be more finicky to use in Snow Leopard and Lion. I had some problems with duplicate fonts that were causing havoc on my machine just a few weeks ago. So you may want to try and track down if you have duplicate fonts also. I just used Spotlight to find where any errant fonts were installed. If you install fonts manually I'd temporarily remove them all from the User > Library > fonts folder (or wherever else you may have installed them) and then restart. That way you can test to see if that might be the problem. Then if it is you can add half the fonts back in and do a bubble sort to find which font is corrupt. A bubble sort is a way of taking half of something and testing if it's good or bad. Then if it's a bad half, taking half again to see if it's good or bad. That way you can narrow in on a specific file causing the problem. It can be a little tedious with having to restart, but is one of the best ways of finding a corrupt font. Another method may be to remove all of one type of font and add each set in until  the problem shows up again (if removing them is what fixes it).
    If you use the built in FontBook you can try this: http://www.lifespy.com/2007/mac-tips-find-and-eliminate-corrupt-fonts-in-osx/
    Hopefully you'll get it worked out.

  • How I can disable unnecessary fonts from the font menu?

    How I can disable unnecessary fonts from the font menu?
    I'm so frustrated to always browse the kilometer-long font menu. There are Chinese, Arabic, Thai, Japan etc. fonts. I will never need these fonts!
    The platform is the iMac and Maverics. Illustrator is a version CS6. All software is the latest version of.
    I get off some of these fonts using Apple's Font Book, but still there will be unnecessary Chinese, Arabic, Thai, Japan etc. fonts.
    I also have Suitcase Fusion 4, but that doesn't help in this case because I can't disable system fonts etc. I also tried the "Monolingual" software. Monolingual is a software for removing unnecessary language resources from OS X. But still I see many foreign language fonts in font menu.

    I could do with an answer to this question too
    The fonts I don't want on my system are these (all Adobe covert additions as far as I can tell):

  • The app icons and font on my iPhone 4 just went to massive making it difficult to even scroll how can I change it back, where do I go which menu? Thanks in advance

    The app icons and font on my iPhone 4 just went to massive making it difficult to even scroll how can I change it back, where do I go which menu? Thanks in advance

    Next time you accidentally use 3 fingers it will zoom again. Unless you need the feature you're better to turn it off

  • After the recent update the entire browser, including menus, icons, and everything on the web page, are too small. Fonts are smaller, pics are smaller, zoom settings will not remain universal. Minimum font size will make text readable, but all pics are to

    The new update has screwed up my browser settings, I cannot get them fixed and Im pissed because my computer is an eye-sore to read until this is fixed! EVERYTHING in the browser is smaller, fonts, menus, icons, web page content, pictures, tables, etc. I have set the minimum font in the settings and the text is just to a point where it is easily readable at the maximum size setting, but all the menus and icons are still tiny and hard to read. The last version I had installed worked fine with no add-ons needed. Everything fit the screen fine and was easily readable without modification. I want this version off my PC and I want the last version I had back on but I dont know what version it was!!!!!!! ARARGGGG
    In fact, this stupid troubleshooting window that I am in filling out this form doesnt fit the page right at all, and edges of the text are cut off, so Im not even sure what some of these boxes are asking for!!

    See [[Toolbars and page content appear too large after upgrading to Firefox 3]]
    *Try to adjust the DPI setting, see http://kb.mozillazine.org/layout.css.dpi
    *Try to set the pref layout.css.devPixelsPerPx to 2 on the about:config page.
    To open the ''about:config'' page, type '''about:config''' in the location (address) bar and press the Enter key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.
    If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.
    If you need to increase (or decrease) the font size on websites then look at:
