All these folders in internal storage/dcim

When I plug my iphone 5 into my pc computer and I click on internal storage, dcim, I have tons of folders and some may have as little as 2 pictures in them. How can I get it to show just the pictures and get rid of the folders.

View it with the Camera and Scanner Wizard or a photo management app on your computer rather than Windows Explorer. Apple changed the folder structure with iOS 8 to allow better organization of images. Photo management apps know how to manage folders on cameras, but Windows Explorer does not. If you use any enhanced features of the camera or you edit images on the phone you will also notice new files with an .AAE type. Again, photo apps know about this standard for specifying image edits, but Windows Explorer does not.

Iphotos Package Contents: What are all these folders for? Is it too large to back up in the cloud?

Dear experts, I am quite a newbie when it comes to understanding the Mac filing system, as I originally came from the PC world. There's lots of things I dont understand in the iMac file viewer and how to organise and backup my photos is an important issue for me.
I know that if I want to look at the original photo files on my iMac, I can right-click on users/myname/pictures and select "Show Package Contents".
Question 1 - What are all these folders for?
Please can someone explain what is the difference between all the folders I see? Some of them seem to be exact duplicates of the others e.g. Masters, Modified and Originals all seem to have the same content. So here is a list of folders that I see. What is in them?, or what is their purpose?

Question 2 - Which photo folder should I back-up?
If I want to keep a physical backup of my photos, which of the above folders should I copy to an external hard drive? (I use Get Backup to automatically copy all important new or changed files to an external drive)
Question 3 - Using the cloud: What is the best way to backup my large photo library in the cloud safely?
I would like to have some kind of safe backup in the cloud for my photos. However the size of the iphoto library is huge at 165GB. Even the Masters folder is huge. It is 130GB. Is it possible to back up files of this size in the cloud? I have a couple of services called photo streaming and Dropbox, but they don't seem to be able to handle this kind of size. Photo streaming only works with 1000 photos (as far as I can tell), and my Dropbox probably has a limit too. I guess it's about 5GB. I am already using about 3GB of my Dropbox space for other files. I would consider both paid and free solutions.

Don't do that. That's like opening the hood of your car and trying to figure out what all the different bits and peices are and which you can yank out and dispose of. Simply, there are no user-serviceable parts in here.
So, your Question 2:
You back up the iPhoto Library as a single unit.
Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store
Your question 3:
There is no good back up to the Cloud. There are a couple of reasons for this. One is that the datasets are so large and the cloud services shapre their download speeds. This means restoring can take days to complete. Then, and this is the big problem, the iPhoto Library needs to sit on a disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Bluntly, no servers online are formatted appropriately, and if the Library is written to - by an incremental back up, for instance - there is a very high likelihood that the library will be corrupted.
Your Question 1:
The Library you're describing there sounds like one that has been updated a few times. Not everything you list there is a folder. Some will be aliases.
The Data folders hold thumbnails.
The Masters and Originals folders hold the files as imported from the camera
The Previews hold the versions of the edited photos that are accessed via the Sharing mechanism.
I think if you look losely that you'll notice that one of the Data folders and one of either the Masters or the Originals folders is actually an alias.
Everything else is a database or cache file of some form. All are required for iPhoto to work.

HT201302 How does one "Navigate to [iOS device]\Internal Storage\DCIM\100APPLE"?

I'm trying to manually move 500+MB files from my iPad to my XP, and I'm stuck on step 4 "Navigate to [iOS device]\Internal Storage\DCIM\100APPLE".
I can't find any drive or directory information associated with the iPad. How do I get to the 100APPLE directory?

In short, find the files in the iTunes backup data, copy them to where you want them, then add the appropriate extensions.

This has been bugging me for some time. On my main harddrive I keep seeing all these weird folders at the root level appearing.

What's in 'em? Can you view any of them with textedit? Also what's their file size?

Pages creates all these folders on network shared drives

Our office has a ton of Macs all hardwired into gigabit ethernet. For years we've used worked with Pages, Numbers and Keynote files directly off a central server and it's always done a great job. Since upgrading to Pages 5.x every single time we open any Pages file it creates a folder with an idential name plus ".pages" next to each file. This folder seems to contain usless data that neither Pages 5 nor Pages 4 recognizes, and deleting the folders doesn't affect the original file at all they still open fine. This is really SUPER annoying and is flooding our servers with all kinds of usless data.
What is going on here and how can this be fixed? Is anyone else experiencing this? Thanks in advance...

Pages ’08 and Pages v5+ documents are special Package bundle file objects. When they reside on the Mac, they appear in Finder as ordinary files. When they reside on external storage, they will appear as directories. Pages ’09 documents also appear as regular files, but are in fact a compressed zip of a folder.
Your Mac server is likely running an older version of OS X than Maverick, and does not understand the exclusive new Pages v5 document format, or its proper presentation to end users, as would Mavericks.
Choices:
Export all Pages v5 documents to Pages ’09 v4.3 document format.Resume use /Applications/iWork ’09/Pages
Before saving Pages v5 documents to server, compress them first.
Right-click on the .pages document on your machine, then select Compress menu item.

Despite its progressive version number, Pages v5+ lacks substantial functionality from its Pages ’09 v4.3 antecedent, including an entire incompatible document format with other versions of Pages. I am very troubled with my ipod touch because I don't see my ipod folder showing up on my computer. i have tried all possible ways to make it viewable but somehow i end up seeing only my internal storage (dcim/pictures). Its really frustrating because bought a new laptop with windows 8 and installed a new itunes but only to find out that i cant transfer my songs right away.... I can connect my ipod touch to the itunes swiftly but to transfer my songs from my ipod to my computer is such a hassle. so please if anyone could help me figure this out... I cant buy an iphone unless i fix my problem with my ipod.....

Wait, until MacOS X 10.10.3 has been released his spring. The Photo.app for Mac, that will come with MacOS X 10.10.3 will make it possible to migrate an Aperture library to a Photos Library and store it in iCloud, so you can use it from all your devices, see this link: Apple - OS X - Photos Preview
But Aperture libraries cannot by stored in a cloud storage. An Aperture library needs to be on a locally mounted drive, because aperture does not support remote access to the library. If you try to move your Aperture library to a Dropbox or on iCloud Drive, it will be corrupted by the network access.

Accidently deleted all files on internal storage and synced new files to internal storage

I was setting up FolderSync to sync some folders to my phones internal storage. My mistake was to choose the root of the internal storage, which deleted all files files and synced the folders to the internal storage. I've tried to factory reset the phone, to recreate folders and files originally placed on the internal storage, but no luck. I've only used the phone a couple of days, and didn't wanna spend time on trying to recover folders/files, since I guessed that syncinf files to internal storage would damage the "old" files anyway. Is it possible to recreate the internal storage to the state when I first used the phone? For example the demo videos and sample pictures don't reappear when I do a factory reset (also placing the tick for deleting the internal storage).

After doing full factory reset your phone will be clean and ready to use with root folder recreated. But... demo videos and sample pictures are not part of firmware. It is region dependent content available only until phone is factory cleaned or user deletes them.
So to recover those files you need to find other user with the same phone as yours and kindly ask him to share those files with you (if sharing such files is legal in your country).

Are there pictures in your camera roll? Windows does not handle viewing the iPhone in Explorer very well. It will give you an idea of how much space is being utilized in the phone, but it is not really that accurate. You do not have access to anything else via Explorer except photos that are in the Camera Roll. No other files can be accessed and you cannot add files to the phone via Explorer.

If you still have a backup from that point in time as part ofr your computer backup history, you could restore the backup folder, restore the phone from that backup and have the messages on the phone.

Pictures are not designed to be kept in the Camera Roll... that is simply temporary storage for when you are taking pictures. Try reading this and this to see if it clears it up for you.

Just opened up my Mac HD to find all these extra Folders in there - and I have no idea where they came from!
Also, I have a .DS_Store Icon on my desktop.
Confused as heck! What have I done?

Why all these thumbnails folders?

iTunes keeps making all these thumbnail folders - I can delete them and it runs without them.
So why does it keep making them?
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\thumbnails

It's a bunch of nested folders named 00, 01, 03, 04 and the like.
Those folders also have nested folders. When I finally get to the last nested folder, it has a file named something like this in it.
