All things being equal, does 4th gen quad core i7 (2.5GHz) need more RAM than 5th gen dual core i5 (2.7GHz) for same tasks?

Bought mid/late 2014 15" MBPr with the i7 2.5GHz and 16GB RAM. I'm within 2 week exchange period at Best Buy, and thinking of switching to 2015 13" MBPr with i5 2.7GHz and 8GB RAM for battery life and weight, and they don't offer the upgraded 16GB RAM option for any 13" models.
Needs to be Best Buy because of gift cards
Use docked at office 75% of time vs 25% out of office, so portability and battery life are nice to have but not as important as if I had 8 hour flights on weekly basis
See appeal of having 5th gen i5 in 13" vs my 4th gen i7 that will be updated this summer
Not a gamer and don't use Final Cut or other video editing, but I tend to leave several applications open and usually have between 1-3 GB free RAM of the 16GB total at any time according to my Memory Cleaner readings
Therefore, worried that 8GB is a non-starter as simple math says that I would have shortfall of 5-7GB RAM based on above readings, but wondering if dual core i5 will use RAM more efficiently than quad core i7
Any help greatly appreciated!

Also to note, would like this to last 4 years, which was reason that I bought the higher spec'd model even though I don't run games or video editing

  • All Things Being Equal, Is the Apple Display The Best Monitor For A Mac

Let's put price aside for a second....
Is the Apple Display the best monitor to hookup to a MacBook Pro (or any Mac for that matter) because the Apple Display is specifically configured for Macs where other monitors are probably more configured for PCs/Windows? In other words are Apple Displays the best out of the box for your Mac (minimal configuration, maximum clarity and crispness, etc.).
    Thanks.

It's a very good sRGB monitor. The 30 is outstanding. I still think the 23 is a little sketchy; it seems prone to an issue where for as much as an hour you can just discern a ghost of a window that has been up for a few hours; and there are still sporadic reports of weird color casts and "sparkling" effects that can make it difficult to focus on fine details when you're working. The 20 is very good unless you're in a bright environment, in which case you might find its backlight does not go up enough. The 20 has a certain rarity value right now; it's about the last really good wide-format monitor in its size class, though there are still plenty of good 20 or 21 inch 1600x1200 displays out there.
Bear in mind that because OS X (including, most importantly, Safari) still thinks everything is sRGB, if you get an extended gamut AdobeRGB monitor like the latest 90-series 26 incher from NEC, all the colors in iApps like iPhoto and Safari will come out looking Day-Glo.
The very best monitors out there -- and here we're talking 24-inch monitors that cost $1,200 and up once you consider tax and/or shipping -- will tend to have things like a polarizing filter on the display itself, HDCP support, dual or even triple computer inputs, and 10 or 12 bit color support that enables profiling within the monitor independently of the graphics card on your computer. Of the above features Apple is particularly overdue on implementing HDCP, which Hollywood in its stupidity has made a requirement for HD movies (why they want to enrich monitor manufacturers rather than themselves I don't know), and the polarizing filter thingy, which further improves the blacks and the viewing angle on IPS panels such as the ones Apple uses in its displays.
Every now and then a cheaper one comes along -- DoubleSight's latest 25.5 inch ("26 inch" in name only) display comes to mind -- that fulfills all those attractive specifications but usually has some deficiency or other. The most common aggravating feature of cheaper displays, and this has shown up in forums on the DoubleSight display, is you can't turn the brightness control down far enough for domestic use without resorting to hardware calibration and/or pulling back on the individual RGB sliders, which makes color accuracy a problem. But for a brightly lit office environment, and if you're OK dealing with the (hopefully temporary) OS X issues with wide gamut, the DoubleSight is an attractive HD option.
Now will someone help me decide which of the ACD 20 or 23 causes less eye strain when dealing with text? Thanks in advance.

  • GTX 970 vs. 980 - do perf benchmarks exists comparing these two with all else being equal?

Do stats exist comparing these two directly in APP (all else being equal)?
Have a defective 970 and considering a 980, but wondering if it's worth the extra cost. In other words, does the extra cost yield significant real world performance gains in APP?

I don't believe so, however the price difference is pretty big. Where I live it's around €350 for the 970, €450 for the 780 ti and €550 for the 980. It would seem that (at least for the time being) the 780 ti is on par if not slightly faster than the gtx 980. I am not entirely sure how much upcoming drivers and better future support for Maxwell might help it swing in favour for the 980, however I do believe the 970 to hit a solid sweet spot. It might depend on the rest of your system configuration, was the defective 970 DOA or did you manage to run it for a while to see if your setup managed to max out the gpu?
Keep in mind if anyone reading this starts to consider choosing between the 780 ti that it does use more power and doesn't come with hdmi 2.0.

  • Does my MacBook White 7,1 need more RAM?

    Hi, I'm Federico from Argentina.
It's my first post here. First of all, sorry for my english, hope it's not so bad.
I am photographer and digital retoucher, so, as you might imagine... I use a lot Photoshop (CC).
I'm thinking that I need to upgrade my Macbook to 8gb (now I have 4gb) because my OSX is running slow, and it's affecting my workflow (upgrading to MB Pro is not a chance... no budget for that...).
In the Activity Monitor when retouching in Photoshop memory pressure shows in yellow (Mavericks).
Beyond that, here's my EtreCheck report, I think you may find it useful for troubleshooting my problem.
    Thank you so much!

Yes, you need more RAM, but more imprtantly:
Macintosh HD (disk0s2) / [Startup]: 249,2 GB (3,45 GB free) (Low!)
Your Mac is running on vapour! You are risking data loss and a fouled-up system. You urgently need to move files (not applications) to an external hard drive, to leave at least 30GB free.

No, it won't work.. the Airports are not media devices.. they have no brains .. no media extensions.. and itunes must be running on a computer.
You can however watch movies from storage but not with itunes..
See how people use tools like VLC to get around Apple's built in iTunes limitations.

If the iTunes database files are on that drive, launch iTunes with the Shift key(Windows) or Option key(Mac OS X) held down, select Choose Library, and navigate to it. The computer may need to be authorized to play protected content, and if the library contains rented movies, those won't play.
If not, import the content to an iTunes library.

  • I lost my Ipod need some info on 5th gen

I had a 3rd gen 15GB and I can't seem to find it. I used it on my harley so I haven't needed it for a while. I'm going to replace it but I need to make sure th 5th gen is the same size because I use a Ram handlebar mount that only fits the 15gb unit I had. My 30gb is thicker so it won't fit. Is the new 30gb the same as my old 3rd gen 15gb in size?

the 5th generation iPod is nowhere near the same size/shape as any of the previous generations. they are much slimmer and they are wider.

  • T42 replacement LCDs compatible across manufacturers, all other things being equal?

I have to replace the screen in a T42 (tough as they are, something's gotta give when the ThinkPad is sandwiched between my high-school nephew's ad-hoc wrestling practice and a hardwood floor.....   :-)  ), and in looking at the Hardware Maintenance Manual for this model (39t6192_01.pdf), it lists multiple manufacturers (Samsung, LG and CMO) and P/N's (11P8352, 92P6726 and 92P6675, respectively) for the 14.1" XGA TFT LCD that's currently in this laptop.  From what I can tell, the CMO part is the glossy screen, and the Samsung/LG parts are matte, so I'd probably be sticking with what's in there, the Samsung/LG.
My question is this: can I replace the screen that currently is in the laptop with either one of the listed parts, or do I have to replace the screen with one from the same manufacturer?
Type number is 2379-R1U, I can provide the serial number if that's needed.....

    Welcome to the forum!
All of those screens are matte, none is glossy. They are completely interchangeable, just make sure to get a genuine IBM/Lenovo unit with a FRU# number on the back of the screen, and NOT any type of  "compatible" third-party-garbage from eBay...
    Good luck.
    Cheers,
    George

  • Continuous restart, but need help finding solutions (5th Gen. w/ video)

Everytime i go to turn my iPod on, the apple logo appears, then it restarts, it keeps restarting itself over and over again until it runs out of battery but it never gets past the apple logo. I Tried the 5 r's and it still does not work. My computer and iTunes are not able to read it as well. I tried to use the disk mode restore method, but that does not work either.
    What should I Do?

I am having very a similar issue but my 30 GB Video iPod only lights up with the backlight, no logo, no menu (so not frozen). I have done the toggling, let the battery die down, rebooted the computer, downloaded the latest software updates, and done a full restore (it appears to have completely cycled and gone through, and all I get is a clear light (not working). The 5 R's did not work for me either! Any HELP or is this a bigger Apple issue? Does anyone know of any hard drive issues/recalls?

  • Quad core vs Dual core, and Inel graphics

    Hi all,
I’m trying to decide between a 2012 quad core 2.3GHz i7 and a 2014 dual core 2.6GHz i5. Yes, I wish they had a 2014 quad core Haswell with upgradeable RAM and a second HD bay like the 2012, plus a faster clock speed and Iris Pro graphics, but they don’t.
The main differences I see are listed below. I didn’t list the soldered on RAM in the 2014 because I’d be ordering it maxed out with 16GB of RAM. The same with the 2012; I’d be buying and installing 16GB of RAM. So in that respect, they’re even. And price comes out about the same, $900.
                 2012 Quad 2.3 i7              vs        2014 Dual 2.6 i5
2012 Ivy Bridge quad      vs        2014 Haswell dual with slightly faster single core scores
Intel 4000 graphics         vs        Iris (5100)
FireWire                          vs        2nd ThunderBolt 2 port
    Mavericks capable           vs        Yosemite
    802.11n Wi-Fi                 vs        ac
I’m decided on 3-4-5. My main questions deal with cores and graphics.
Question 1 is about cores. I’ve read from some people on other sites that for my low level use (email, MS Office, browsing, Youtube) I won’t even be accessing the extra cores on the quad, and that the unmaxed dual cores with a faster clock speed and Haswell CPU should actually work faster in my situation. So that’s my question. Is that true? And is that likely to hold true in the future with the trend in apps related to my usage (the quad core should still be “unnecessary” in the next 5 years or so, given my usage)?
Question 2 is about the graphics. I’ve read wildly different estimates as to how much faster Iris is than the 4000 (anywhere from about 10% to 90%). Anyone know how much difference I’m likely to see between the two, given my usage? And is that likely to hold true in the future with the trend in apps related to my usage (higher graphics intensive apps playing that much better on Iris compared to 4000, again, given my usage)?
I’m trying to buy for now, but I tend to keep my Macs for 6-7 years, so I’m also trying to look at the future.
Any benchmarks, facts or educated opinions are welcome.
    Thanks!

    Kappy wrote:
All other things being equal 4-cores are twice as fast as 2-cores. This is regardless of what you are doing. The only way a 2-core processor would be as fast is if it were run at twice the clock speed. But the 2-core CPU is only clocked around 10% or so faster. Now, for all that you claim you will be doing the relevant question is do you need 4-cores. My answer is that you don't. But the 2-core machine will be slower - all things being equal.
Iris is a far better GPU than HD4 or 5000. But not as fast as a discreet GPU with better performance measures. Again, you don't really need high-power GPU. Iris should meet your needs adequately for now.
But remember you want to keep the computer for 6 or 7 years. No one knows what your needs will be then. You may find whatever you buy today that meets today's needs will be inadequate for tomorrow's.
Your comments on graphics pretty much confirm the majority of what I've been reading on other sites.
The conflict is with cores. About half the people are saying for low CPU intensive tasks 4 cores are totally unnecessary, while the other half says they'll make things faster no what the task (one thing all seem to have in common is they're totally against the 2014s).
So it seems I'm left with the decision between faster performance vs better graphics.
    I appreciate your input.

  • My 4th gen iPod touch will not power on, will not charge anywhere, and is not recognized as plugged in by iTunes. This is irritating, as a friend had given it to me in perfect working condition because she got a new 5th gen iPod Touch.

I just got this 4th-gen Touch from a friend because she got a new 5th-gen. when she gave it to me, the 4th-gen was in perfect working order, and I haven't used it since she gave it to me. I had put it in sleep mode and put it on my dresser, wher it has sat without being messed with for two weeks. Now, all of a sudden, it won't power on, it won't charge no matter WHERE i plug it in to charge, and not even a hard reboot has worked. My computer will not even recognize that it is even plugged in. There is no red low battery symbol displayed, nothing to make it seem as if it is charging, and, if it is charging, no response is evoked from it when I tap it, or push any buttons. The warranty on the thing has expired, and I really need to find out what is wrong with it and get it fixed. Can ANYBODY HELP ME?????????  if somebody can point me in the right direction, or even help me get it physically fixed, i am willing to give MAJOR points, and it would be greatly appreciated.

Didn't you already post something similar:
Yesterday, I went and bought a refurbished 3rd-generation iPod touch, with a warranty for needed repairs in the future. When I went home after buying it, I plugged it into my computer to start charging. I plugged it in, and the battery in the iPod exploded, and now it won't power on period, even when it is plugged in or docked. I bought a warranty to go with the iPod because I figured that I was probably going to drop it, and then need it repaired. But Apple cannot even find the purchase record on file from where I bought the AppleCare warranty on it, so now I am stuck with what is now basically a paperweight. What should I do?
    iPod touch, iOS 4
And would this be the same iPod with the fried battery?

  • Selling iPod 4th Gen to get 5th gen, but.......?

    Hi folks.
I'm currently selling my iPod 4th Gen to raise funds for my 5th gen. I won't be able to order the 5th gen until I have the funds from my 4th gen sale, and I just want to ask, how long does delivery take to the UK?
Also, is the warranty transferable? And does anyone know how I would transfer to warranty to the buyer?
    Thanks,
    Tez

The warranty should be fully transferable, but you might need the original paperwork for when you purchased the phone, such as a sales receipt or order confirmation. This is used for proof of date of purchase, but I contacted Apple regarding the same issue and they said in some cases the warranty was still valid as long as the original UPC was still on the box for the iPod. Also, the Extended Apple Care Protection Plan is available for purchase for who you sell the phone to, given that it's still under the original warranty. I believe it's $59, and for people buying a used iPod from someone else, it's usually a good idea to go ahead and extend the warranty. I did the same thing and sold my 30GB iPod Photo on ebay in order to buy the new 60GB, and ended up getting about $240 for it, so good luck.
