All this talk.....

All this talk about problems with computer lags and spinning beach balls. Is Apple doing anything to fix these problems? I am still having trouble with my computer going into "Lag Mode" and pausing my movie that is playing when all I am doing is surfing the internet with FireFox and watching a home movie in quicktime. I was able to do a lot more with my previous MBP. Does anyone have see a light at the end of the tunnel?

Customers have been told that Apple is working on a software/firmware fix, but there is no ETA yet. Check your Software Update daily.

  • All this talk about HEAT, my PowerBook G4 1.25GHZ gets hot!

I have ordered a new MBP 2.16GHZ 1GB 120HD but since I heard all the talk about heat I started monitoring my Powerbook G4 1.25GHZ and you know what, it gets hot!
I downloaded a widget from the Apple site and after about 4-5 hours of just regular web surfing and iTunes I had a CPU bottomside temp of 136F! It was hot between the F keys and the screen almost too hot to touch. I have owned this machine for three years and have never noticed it!
I am somewhat relieved as I think that I have been worried about something that has always been there and never affected my Mac experience before. Obviously this new Mac has a much faster CPU inside so I expect it will get at least as hot. I am not saying that the heat is normal it's just nothing new.
Anyone else noticed this since they started reading about it?

I really do wonder about these 2.16 models. I had a 2.16 on loan while my 2 GHz version was being repaired and it ran warm, but nowhere near the temperatures of the 2 GHz.
Anyway, I got the 2 GHz back and two weeks later the battery started to swell. Now they are upgrading me to the flagship model for free; all heat related issues BTW.
I understand the loyalty and need to defend Apple, but when you run a business you tend to feel a little differently I guess. Glad to hear your not experiancing problems.

  • All this talk about problems with the iphone 4

But everyone keeps it, complaints is all i see, companys only understand sale's that's why you have not heard any more response from apple, iphone 4 is selling like wildfire, even with it's problems.

My goes back this Friday, just in time for my HTC Desire to be delivered. Loads of reviews claim the HTC Desire is just as good (some say better than the iPhone 4). Unless you are 100% happy then there is no point in keeping it. A software update is not going to help a hardware problem. My main gripe was with emails, o.k that can be resolved in an update but now I'm too ****** off waiting for an update, which should have come 2 weeks ago

  • All This Talk of ProTools Editing Being Better Than Logic . . . Really?

OK so I admit, I've never used Pro Tools. But lately there seems to be this chatter about how Pro Tools audio editing capabilities are so superior to Logics. Are they? What am I missing? Logic seems to do everything with audio that there is to do. OK I would appreciate a slip tool now or then to slide audio around within a region. But you can get around that using anchors in the audio window or sample editor. And sure there's no sample accurate edit in the arrange window. But who cares. That's what the sample editor is for. I guess I just wonder how green the grass really is on the other side. Can anyone shed some light on this for me.

there seems to be this chatter about how Pro Tools
audio editing capabilities are so superior to Logics.
Are they? What am I missing? Logic seems to do
everything with audio that there is to do.
I was a part of some of those threads. I am new to Logic (5 months or so now). I've used ProTools for years and years (and still do for some things).
My posts have consistantly indicated that I love Logic. I now prefer it over any DAW. And for writing it's killer.
But my complaint with Logic has been to do with editing. I am always very quick to add to those complaints that my editing "issues" may just come down to my inexperience - or my not doing things the right way within Logic.
But thus far I've read the manual on editing many times, I've watched relevent chapters of the M Sitter video series many times. I've watched the PRO ASK advanced editing video a number of times. I've scoured this forum. And spent a week in a Toronto studio on a project with a producer who is a long- time Logic user, and watched him like a hawk. So if I am missing some Logic audio editing truths - I've yet to know where to look for them or see them in use.
Below are the specifics you asked for - at least in my opinion. Again .. I hasten to add that I would take Logic over any other DAW. It's a fantastic program and way more advanced than I am.
    Your question of specifics:
In general it's just faster and easier to edit in ProTools for these reasons/features:
    1. My experience with PT vs inexperience with Logic (I mention that first as it's gotta be a major factor with everything that follows).
    2. Protools' way of handling regions that overlap is simple. It's less versatile than Logic, but it's simple and fast. Once you decide on an edit and cross fade for two regions, it doesn't change visually or sonically regardless of what regions are selected afterward. Unless you change it, that is. This is confusing to describe. Regions don't go changing around when you back up through selelctions to check things. If this makes no sense to Logic users - it does to PT users I can guarantee ... In short, when editing a track I would like to be in overlap and crossfade modes together.
    3. The "smart tool". I miss it. MISS it. It allows you to Select, Fade in or Out, Trim regions, Move, crossfade, and control the crossfade all with one tool depending on where it is over region.
    4. Quick changes to Slip, Shuffle, Grid and Spot modes with one key.
    5. 4 or 5 (it's not open just now so I forget) quick user definable Zoom presets with one click.
    6. Beat Detective is pretty cool if editing things played by musicians ... who ... well ... have an alternative sense of timing shall we say.
    Smaller Issues:
    6. SPL is more easily handled in PT for editing audio. You can click anywhere to move it. Not a big deal for most things but very big deal when editing. Also ... one can easily change the behavior of the SPL when stopping playback. Should it return to where you started playback after checking multiple edits? (Very handly when zoomed in) Or should it stay where it stops? You decide. It's quickly changed back and forth in PT.
    7. Small issue ... Cutting is one click faster.
    8. Region lists are very like an EDL - handy and can be hidden very easily too (not a big deal ... I like Logic way of handling this too).
In short, PT is way less versititle than Logic. But I find if I have to extensive audio editing in a hurry I will invariably dump the file in to PT.
In ase anyone thinks I am bashing any DAW here I will say it again. Read point #1 above. And . .... I LOVE Logic. I work almost exclusively in it now. If there editing tricks in Logic that I've yet to learn then I cannot wait. So far it's my only complaint ... editing audio.
    My two cents.

  • All this talk about calibration makes me wanna know if i can use this...

i have recorded an exs24 909 tick to and audio file on channel 2 and
set the anchor to play the file at the first position of the wave display.
created a loop back from a delta 44 card.
I have seen that the delay needs to be set to -57 ( i have rebooted several times, i have done a gain plug phase invertion and it cancels out.)
but my question is it seems that it need to be set to -57.5, but i can't seem to do this setting.
    is it possible?

    Hey FP,
Need to get our terminomology straight first
You said "it is half a tick away from the downbeat". A tick's a lot wider than a sample. I think you mean 1/2 a sample away from the downbeat, right? (Pls. confirm).
The shape of the wave should be nearly identical if you're doing a straight loop-back. But I'll be curious to see your screenshot just to make it all clear.
It's hard to say what the ms of delay would be at 44.1K. It's dependent on your particular hardware, audio system, etc. Tele's saying that the buffer size shouldn't matter. I'm going to experiment later tonight to reacquaint myself with the behavior of that parameter. Not saying tele's wrong, just want to see for myself.
But if my math is right (and there's no guarantee it is) at 44.1, each sample lasts .02 milliseconds. So if you need 1/2 sample more (which isn't possible), a) you ain't a-gonna get it, and b) you probably don't need it LOL! (Can someone please check my math?)

  • All this talk of freezing with the 13" mbp is worrying...

And is slightly putting me off buying the 13" 2.53ghz with 4GB. Can anyone reassure me that mine isnt going to freeze all the time? Why is the unit freezing? is it after market parts? Or just the general OS?
Ill be getting mine with snowleopard.

When you get it, try downloading and installing this recently released Performance Update 1.0 for Snow Leopard (10.6).
It should take care of the pinwheel issue.

  • All this talk about getting the firmware updated

Anyone had any luck rolling theirs back? Updating mine was a huge mistake as I have absolutely no interest in syncing with WMP. I would like to be able to go back to the previous firmware now, but of course the .20.08 firmware app won't detect my player. I can't even get MediaSource to detect my player now. WMP is the only thing that connects and I have no interest in being railroaded into using that ridiculous, clunky system.
Any success stories would be appreciated.

  • I have a small production client looking to run 1 workstation running Mac Lion 10.7.3 and two work stations running Windows7 64 bit. They will all be talking to the same storage array through 8Gb FC. What is there most cost effective way to do this?

I have a small production client looking to run 1 workstation running Mac Lion 10.7.3 and two work stations running Windows7 64 bit. They will all be talking to the same storage array through 8Gb FC. What is there most cost effective way to do this?

    Thank you for your help.
The client has already made the jump to 8Gb including HBA's, switch and RAID Storage.
The other question will be if they need a seperate Mac Server to run the Meta Data or are they able to use the current Mac they are running to do this?
The Mac is a 201073 model they say with 12 Dual Core 2.66Mhz processors and 16 GB of Memory. This system is currently doing rendering. It has the XSAN Client but I understand for the solution to work they need to also run XSAN Server on a MDC.

  • New to all this - questions about my setup

    Hi All
I have recently been loaned an airport express to play with. My imac connects wirelessly to a netgear router. I have added the airport express as a client (I think). It works fine for streaming music to my hifi in the kitchen, but if I move the airport express to another room and connect it to the hifi there the music streams for a few seconds, silence for a few seconds, music a few seconds etc.
    I have 2 questions:
    1. Is this likely to be just due to a worse signal in the second room. (The distance to the router is very similar although the AE is plugged in behind a cabinet)
    2. Presumably my imac is sending music to the router and then to the airport express. Would this be improved by connecting the imac to the router by ethernet, or can the imac talk directly to the airport express and bypass the router.
I hope the above is clear - I am a bit puzzled by all this. Thanks for any suggestions.

    1. Is this likely to be just due to a worse signal in the second room. (The distance to the router is very similar although the AE is plugged in behind a cabinet)
    Yes
    2. Presumably my imac is sending music to the router and then to the airport express. Would this be improved by connecting the imac to the router by ethernet...
    No
...or can the imac talk directly to the airport express and bypass the router.
Yes but then your AirPort Express (AX) would be creating a separate wireless network and your iMac would have to decide which network to connect to (Internet or stream music).

  • How do I consolidate all this at this point: Icloud Drive, Itunes Match, Local iTunes Library, Local iPhoto, Local Aperture, Photo stream, Familly sharing, sharing on iOS, music sharing on iOS, music sharing on mac etc.

I am trying to grasp all the possibilities for consolidating my stuff and my family's stuff from multiple devices and multiple accounts from multiple sources  but I cant.
I have been reading many instructions and FAQ regarding iCloud Drive, iCloud Sharing, iTunes Match, Familly Sharing, file size limitations on iCloud Drive, app sharing on iOS, Backup vs Sync vs cloud sharing,  storing iWork documents on iCloud drive, storing iTunes library on iCloud Drive, storing iPhoto library on iCloud Drive, storing Aperture library on the iCloud, the Photos app on iOS with iCloud and many others.... but I feel like I need a systems admin course from apple to manage all of it.
This is what I and my family currently have:
Hardware: Multiple iPhones, Multiple Macs, Apple TV (with hard drive), Multiple iPads.
Operating systems: Everything is upgraded to the latest iOS and Yosemite.
    Libraries:
    1)  Multiple iTunes Libraries locally stored on Macs and IPhones with lossless CD music and iTunes purchased music. What I want to do:
    a) Have a main family shared iTunes library across ALL devices that contains our Lossless music and purchased music. so that it can be played across ALL   devices. With the ability to have private music for each individual (Not shared).
    b) Purchase new music and add it to the family share or purchase music and make it private (Not shared).
    2)  Multiple iPhoto Libraries macs (With photo stream from iPhones) and ONE Aperture Library on my mac. What I want to do:
    a) Have a main family shared photo library that every one can deposit to and view.
    b) Store individual iPhoto libraries on iCloud Drive(s)? So that everyone can have their own library and edit it across THEIR devices.
    c) Store and use my Aperture Library on iCloud Drive?
    Other documents:
iWork files, PDFs etc. What I want to do:
    a) Have a main family shared area (on iCloud Drive i suppose) where we can share documents.
    b) Sync private documents across ALL individuals devices (Available locally and on iCloud).
    c) Store private documents (One instance)  on iCloud drive and make them available on ALL individuals devices.
    d) Backup of local documents?
    Apps:
    iOS apps:
    a) Share purchased apps?
    b) Not share private apps.
    Storage:
What do I purchase to accomplish the above:
    a) iCloud storage for everyone?
    b) iTunes Match for everyone?
    c) All of the above?
    Conclusion:
It would be great for Apple to explain all this with all the options in one concise document instead of hunting down individual documents and sections all over the place.
    Thank you for your help.

    Hey there!
You and I are data soulmates. I have been having this trouble for a while and have yet to get my head around it. Our problem is that we've cycled through multiple macs and the "home" or "host" for all the stuff that's now been moved or moving to the Cloud is very scattered. It drives me crazy... almost to the point where I'm thinking about starting a brand-new iCloud account and beginning from scratch.
If you have any experiences or recommendations you could share about your strategy, I would love to hear it.

    No... do not move programs.
    About the iTunes library files
Your iTunes library files track the media you add to iTunes, how you've organized it, and other information such as playlists. By default, these two files are in your iTunes folder:
    Mac OS X: /Users/username/Music/iTunes/
    Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\
    Windows Vista: C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes\
    Windows 7: C:\Users\username\My Music\iTunes\
    Windows 8: C:\Users\username\My Music\iTunes\

There is no problem about using one ID for iTunes, iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match, and another for iCloud and its email and syncing facilities. This way you can all use the same iTunes account but have separate emails and calendars etc.
