All user profiles have defaulted to High Contrast Theme

This is in an academic, RDP only environment. 3 server 2012 machines, 2 of them are DC's. The two with the problem happen to be the DC's
A student changed his/her theme to High Contrast, for whatever reason, everyones theme was changed, except Administrator. Users connect via NComputing thin clients.
Ive removed the High Contrast theme from Resources/Ease of Access, now new users dont receive the High Contrast theme by default. But existing users still have the High Contrast theme on logon.
Group Policy controls the theme settings but it doesnt seem to have any affect.
Is the High Contrast theme stored in their profile somewhere? NTUSER.DAT ? We have well over 300 users, so it is a chore to do it manually. Id like to find the registry setting that is adding this. It seems odd that only two of the three servers are doing
this. Ive compared registry settings, even imported/exported HKU/.DEFAULT but it doesnt seem to have any affect.

Hi,
Based on my knowledge, the theme does not store in NTUSER.DAT. Please let us know if you use the Microsoft remote desktop client or third party remote desktop clients.
If you third-party ones, I suggest contacting their support first.
In addition, please provide us screenshots for further research.
Thanks.

  • High Contrast themes on Windows 7&8 overwrites css styles on webpage, how do keep the High Contrast themes setting on window and use the stock CCS?

This was not a problem for me until Windows 8 now makes it so you HAVE to use high contrast theme to be able to change the background on windows explorer. Otherwise you have to accept it always being white. If there is a windows program that allowed me to change the windows colors like you used to be able to then I would not need to use the high contrast.

Note I have click on the Firefox button (Tools menu) and then click Options
Select the Content panel then Click the Colors... button.
I do have checkbox beside "Allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selections above" checked.
    BUT Still
Windows somehow overrides this. This is bugging the hell out of me. How is it what windows has any control over Firefox's controls anyways?

  • Win7 and Reader X - default settings for ALL users/profiles

I have a custom browser/app that opens PDF's within the app which can sometimes cause issues. I found that if I set Reader X to not open in the browser (Edit>Preferences>Internet - uncheck "Display PDF in Browser") that this does resolve most issues. My problem...when changed this only affects the current user/profile that's logged in. Potentially there can be dozens of users on these laptops. The other setting is when opening a PDF, I get the warning about Protected Mode not being able to be used due to the current configuration. I can select "Always open with Protected Mode disabled" and I no longer get the message; but again, current user/profile only.
Is there a way to set these settings for ALL users/profiles? Running Win7 (32bit) with Reader X.

I do not know why you experience this; what exactly happens when a non-admin users attempts to highlight something?
You are talking about highlighting in the same document?

  • How do I make web shortcuts into start screen tiles that can be pushed to all users profile on a computer in Windows 8.1 enterprise?

We are trying to roll out Windows 8.1 Enterpise in our school system (K-12).
The focus of this question is how do we take an internet web based shortcut and make it into a screen tile (on the start screen) which will appear for any user's start screen that logs on to the computer?
    The details:
We came upon a great paper that's entitled "Customize Windows 8.1 Start Screens by Using Group Policy".
By applying this paper we were able to accomplish our first goal: Lock down the start screen so no user could change it. We accomplished this by using the Start Screen Layout policy setting laid out in the paper.
Our second goal: to customize the start screen is only half way met. We can set up the start screen the way we want and then export the .xml file. We are able to "reimport" the .xml file when the new user logs in. The installed programs
will appear on the Start Screen but not the internet based web shortcuts that were on the inital setup start screen.
(FYI - tried creating these tiles by running the start screen internet explorer app to the intended address and pinning them to the start screen. At this time trying to figure if there is a place to put desktop internet short cuts into a directory to make
them appear on the Start Screen).
We can see that the directory: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs is a place for program files to appear on the start screen. Is there a location web based shortcuts can be placed to cause them to automatically appear on the start
screen for every user as well? If not how do we accomplish getting these into tiles for every user logging in?
Sorry for the lengthy explanation. Hopefully it gets our question answered and helps others out there in the same boat!

    Karen-
Results: Did not work. The web based shortcuts did not appear.
Below is the steps taken with your tips incorporated. (Again it's lengthy sorry about that, but anyone can recreate what was done here. Maybe someone can see something left out by doing/reviewing it).
    Here is what was done:
    1. Installed a fresh install of Windows 8.1 enterprise on a pc. No updates were ran.
    2. During setup created the admin account.
    3. Logged into the account a simple start screen was arranged and setup by:
Starting desktop Internet Explorer. Going to Technet's website. Clicked tools and then selecting "Add site to Apps" from the drop down menu. Went to Apps screen, right clicked and pinned it to start screen. Repeated this procedure with an
    educational web based site.
Right clicked a few provisioned apps and unpinned them from the start screen.
Made a few groups and labeled them. Web based shortcuts were arranged with one provisioned app in that particular group.
    4. Opened a Powershell, right clicked it and ran as administrator. Typed the following:
    export-startlayout -path C:\Users\Public\Master.xml -as xml
(Master is the name chosen for this test .xml file and was put in a location all users would have privelages to access it).
    5. Opened the command prompt and right clicked and "ran as administrator", typed in gpedit.
    6. In the Local Group Policy under User Configuration, under Start Menu and Taskbar I choose the Start Screen Layout.
    7. Enabled the policy and typed in: C:\Users\Public\Master.xml for the Start Layout File.
    8. Opened computer management, under Local Users and Groups I chose Users, right clicked in the middle screen and created a new user called Alpha.
    9. Logged out of the inital account and logged into newly created Alpha account.
    10. When the Alpha account logged in the start screen came up with everything changed in the inital account but no web based shortcuts were found on the start screen or App view.

  • How do I set all users to have complete permission access to all other users on a single Macbook?

How do I set all users to have complete permission access to all other users on a single Macbook?  When one user uploads a picture from camera, the other user is told they don't have permission to view.  Same with music.

Go to System preference> accouts>unlock>click+and add name of new user, Adrop dowm window will appear, new Account and set for Admi, fill in their name, to make things even more simple, use the same password for all,if it will allow it. Click ceate account. Click allow user to admin this computer. Then go to sys prefs, sharing and click all the things you want to let everyone use, If you use separeate paswords then each user can set their own preferences. All users can be set as as administrator, click allow access for all users. This will allow every one pretty much the same access.
OH yeah reart the computer sfter added a new user, and test the new login, if it's good coninue.

  • PowerShell - List all users that have access to a particular SPLIstItem

    Hi there,
In PowerShell - how to list all users that have access to a particular SPLIstItem?
    Thanks so much in advance.

    Hi frob,
According to your description, my understanding is that you want to list all users who have access to a particular SharePoint list item via PowerShell.
You can use the following PowerShell command:
    $web = Get-SPWeb http://sp/sites/First
    $list=$web.Lists["listV2"]
    $item=$list.Items | where {$_['ID'] -eq 1}
    $item | Select -ExpandProperty RoleAssignments |Select {$_.Member.DisplayName}, {$_.Member.LoginName}, RoleDefinitionBindings
In the above command, you need to change the web URL to your site's URL, change “listV2” to the name of your list, and change the ‘1’ to the ID of the list item.
    The result looks like:

  • How can I enable high contrast themes in Firefox WITHOUT high contrast on the Windows Desktop?

Firefox 4.0 broke one of the best accessability addons that existed, AnyColor. Now I'm stuck with the closest I can get to it, a non-customizable theme which gets some things right but other things wrong.
Naturally, I'd like to make my browsing as comfortable as possible to my low-vision eyes. I thought that the reported "high contrast" Firefox theme might help. Unfortunately, it seems that the only way to turn this on is to turn on high contrast themes in Windows-- and I have adjusted my Desktop so that I don't need them. Unfortunately that would seem to be the only way to get it in Firefox.
Is there a secret way to force high contrast themes? The best solution for low-vision users, of course, would be to officially support AnyColor, or an addon like it.
As an interim solution I'm using Purple Fox, which at least has the feature of being light text on a black background, and has visible tab close boxes; but it has fuzzy edges and twiddly graphics all over the place. It's not bad, it's just not really good. But having tried all of the themes with the word "dark" or "black" in the descriptions, it may be the closest to a working LV theme.
Thanks for any help you might be able to give.

Thanks for the reply. To clarify, by "Firefox chrome" I am referring to Firefox's GUI, such as the tab bar, scrollable context menus and the contents of the 'about:' pages. As a point of interest, Chromium on Ubuntu recently started supporting touch-scrolling for web pages and throughout it's interface.
dom.w3c_touch_events.enabled sends touch events to the webpage, which is less important to me right now. In fact, others have reported that in situations where Firefox has touch-scrolling, enabling that option breaks the touch-scrolling for webpages that listen for the touch events (hence the default being 'disabled').
I'd really like to know if native touch-scrolling is possible under Linux as my current setup is functional but not ideal.

NoSquint is certainly a nice AddOn, which does something helpful; but it doesn't enable high contrast themes, which is what the question was about.
I have gone back to 3.6.16 in the meantime. I can continue to use AnyColor that way. The 4.0 upgrade seems to have more disadvantages than advantages.

  • Why does Firefox need a refresh when high contrast theme is selected?

Shouldn't it change content immediately when it detects a theme change? IE 11 does this and it would be a really nice-to-have feature, especially when it comes to accessbility constraints...

cor-el thanks for the reply, NoSquint seems quite useful but unfortunately it does not cover my use case. I have a use case where an external application is able to dynamically set the selected theme at the OS level, that is, set it to High Contrast Black or switch it back to the default Windows 7 Aero theme, so you should assume that i do not have any control over what is happening at the OS level regarding the selected theme, hence cannot "disable a high contrast theme in the Operating System".
I see that some basic UI elements such as the select box arrow handle and radio buttons change immediately, but the overall outlook of the page (e.g. background colors, text colors) do not. Could this be solved with me implementing a Firefox extension which would interface with the system "theme-changed" event and perform a re-rendering of the page at that point? I am currently trying to find some info on this...

  • IM - Recipient sometimes sees black block instead of text when I use Windows 7 High Contrast theme

I use Lync client 2010 on 64 bit Windows 7. I like to use the Windows High Contrast Black theme. In Lync this sometimes causes an issue in that the person who I am sending messages to sees some of my messages as a black block/bar in their client (perhaps
it could be black text on black background). In my client the message looks ok. Any ideas as to what I can do to resolve this would be appreciated as it is an inconvenience to have to switch to a non-high contrast theme every time I am having an IM conversation

    Hi,
You can try to the following steps:
Update Windows 7 and Lync 2010 client to the latest version.
Try to use Lync 2013 client to have a test.

  • How can I use the Windows 7 high contrast theme with CS6?

I prefer using a high contrast theme in Windows, as I find it reduces eye strain, unfortunately these themes don't work in InDesign CS6 (i've tested Illustrator, Dreamweaver and PS and they seem to handle the high contrast theme ok, but this forum doesn't quite like it either, but that could just be because I'm forced to use IE at work here)
Any text within dialogue boxes is black, and the toolbars and windows are pretty much unusable too.
Is there any way around this issue?

I see the same thing using a High Contrast theme. I think you're in uncharted territory here as far as what's been discussed previously on the forum, but maybe one of our other users also is a high contrast aficianado and has figured something out.
