All was going well then communications error

Hi
I have a canon i865 which I had connected by usb to my Airport Extreme and it has worked fine for printing for the last 2 years. I was away for a couple of months and at that time had the printer connected via an Airport Express and it printed fine too.
Now I'm home again and have hooked up to the Airport Extreme again. Although Airport Extreme recognises the printer (it shows up on the summary when I check) and although it is there as a Bonjour printer, I keep getting a communications error.
Obviously it's nothing to do with new drivers or software etc etc as it was working fine 2 days ago and previously. I have switched everything off and on again as per the troubleshooting article on Mac help but no joy. Does anyone out there have a clue as to what I could try next?

If you are the administrator, try using your browser to go to
http://127.0.0.1:631/
This will bring you to CUPS. Try to print a page from there. It solves the problem some times.
Another thing, do not dismiss driver problems, something gets screwed up and reinstalling the driver might do (it happened to me yesterday).

    Did you do a back up first?  If so you should be able to sync to itunes again and have everything back.

  • I have bought pages and it all was going well until I downloaded the update. Now my files (which are mainly brochures) won't show the pictures in opening screen. So I have over fifty documents and they all show the pages logo on them instead of the pics

    I used pages for brochure documents and copied pictures to them, after I downloaded the upgrade the documents only show the pages logo on the pages from the opening screen. Once you click on them the pictures appear but it takes me ages to do this so they all show. HELP

    Tupelo, there are many, many threads here in the Apple Discussions about the many issues with Pages 5, and the multitude of features that have been lost in this supposed "upgrade." Like Jerry, I'd recommend you get yourself back to Pages 4.3 until Apple comes to their senses.
    So...first off: do you have Pages 4.3 still installed? If you do, it will be in an iWorks '09 folder in your Applications folder. If you bought Pages 4.3 on its own from the App store, your copy of Pages 4.3 will have been overwritten by the new Pages 5.
    If you don't have the iWork '09 folder in your Applications folder, do you have a backup with it installed there? If so, you'll want to revert to that version. I believe that you can drag and drop the older version of Pages (and Keynote and Numbers if you have those as well); I'd recommend that you create a folder called "iWorks '09" in your Applications folder and stick them in that.
    Also, if you have a reasonably current backup, you will be able to recover your documents created in Pages 4.3. Whatever you do, do NOT open them in Pages 5 - once you do, the features you may have used will be gone and reverting won't recover them.
    You may also be able to revert to earlier versions, once you get Pages 4.3 back on your HD/or locate it and so you can use it to open Pages documents. In order to try that, in Pages 5, go to File->Export->Pages 4.3 document and then close Pages 5, and open Pages 4.3. Open the document you just exported. Now go to File->Revert and see if you can find an earlier, pre-Pages 5 version. If you can do that, you should be able to fairly painlessly recover all your messed up docs. Of course, if you have a current backup, it may be faster to simply recover the undamaged originals from the backup.
    Pages 5, if installed on your system, will be the default for opening all .pages documents. You therefore have to do something to prevent that (Get Info and Change All won't stick). Either move Pages 5 entirely off your HD (and to move it, you'll need to put it into the trash first, as simply dragging it somewhere just creates an alias - once you drag it into the Trash, you can drag it to an external drive, for instance) OR you can create a disk image by sticking it in a folder and then using Disk Utility->File->New->Disk Image from Folder. Toss the Pages.app (v 5) in the trash and then any time you want to open Pages 5, simply click on the disk image. It turns itself back into a disk image when you quit. And it won't be the default app for .pages docs when it's a disk image. Or you can simply toss Pages 5 in the Trash entirely. The only reason I've kept my iWork 2013 apps as disk images is in case Apple actually does upgrade them to recover the lost features and perhaps changes its freebie policy along the way. Or...someone might send me a Pages 5 document. They can't be opened in Pages 4.3, so I'd need it then.

    Then installed debian 6.  Somehow after the debian install and restart (I know this sounds crazy) but I am now reduced to Win 7 only. rEFit is not present when rebooting nor is OSX or debian. Further, I am unable to force the install DVD to launch when rebooting, by holding C, D or F8.  The Option key brings me to the grey screen with a padlock. I have attempted the root and local pw- no go. Restart holding D takes me to the windows boot manager. I have attempted several options within the Advanced Options; including – Repair Your computer, safe mode and “last known good config,” All of which did nothing.
    I can see all my OSX files within win7. I tried to install the OSX within windows. Ya right, that did nothing..
    I only desire to get back to OSX...
    What are my options??

    Yes, you royally hosed up your machine.
    You should first try to get your files off, any way you can to a external drive.
    Your going to need to hold c and boot from the disk that came with your computer and a couple of screens in under the menu is a option for Disk Utility.
    Select your drive and Erase with Security Option Zero, format the drive HFS+ Journaled and when that's finished (about a hour or so) then quit and install OS X from the installer.
    I hope this works, but I suspect it won't. Others have hosed their machines trying to use a Linux disk without proper partition formatting too.
    Another option might be to use another Mac to c boot off the Snow Leopard disk and install OS X onto a external drive, take that to the problem Mac and try holding option and booting off of it to erase your internal drive.
    You could replace the drive.

I checked the catalogs and see that lrcat-Journal and lrcat-Lock have been created every time I try to open. I have a backup from the first day I upgraded, but Lightroom doesn't want to access it. Should I reinstall?

    Well, is the catalogue (and the folder it is in) writable? Have you actually checked the permissions? Lightroom won't be spitting out the error just to tick you off, and - computer wizard or not - this sounds very much like something you'll have to fix at the OS level: it's probably nothing to do with Lightroom or those funny lads at Adobe.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app

        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

    Try a soft-reset and see if that gets it to boot up properly : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo should reappear and it will hopefully boot up.
    If it doesn't then try recovery mode and restore/resync your content : If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

    I haven't had issues with other updates.  This one's a doozy, and I don't have iCould backup activated.  I suppose now I must restore and will lose everything?  Not sure why my phone went into Recovery Mode when everything was going so well.  Was updating through iTunes on a new iMac (not via wi-fi). 

    Bummer.
    I finally decided that a restore was my only option, so I clicked it.  I realized after that I could choose to restore to factory settings or choose what I had synced to iTunes.  I sync often, so all of my stuff came back.  It worked well, and I hope your problem is gone or soon goes away.  I never backed anything up to iCloud and now realize that syncing to iTunes each time I charge is a great idea.  I wish you the best.

    I have a canon mx870. It keeps sending a message that there is a communication error. I then re enter my network key and restart the printer and my macbook pro. It will print a few times then the message returns. My PC is also connected to the network and does not get this message. Any suggestions?

    There were some updates addressing printing issues. Run Software Update, update whatever's there, and see if that helps.

  • TS4268 HI I started using imessage today to send SMSs from my computer, after downloading a the Lion OSX operating system. All was working well, but it seems now I can't SMS EVERYONE, just ppl who are registered with iMessage - is that right?

    Would be great to be able to message ANYONE through this app.  Also is it possible to receive messages sent to my phone number on the macbook?  That would be handy if I left my phone somewhere accidentally (which happens semi-regularly LOL) thanks

    I'm not sure that Whatsapp is any good to me in that case unfortunately.  My goal is:
    to be able to send and receive SMSs (to everyone - not just those who also have imessage) on my macbook PRO (with OSX 10.8.2). 
    Basically I would love to use my macbook as an alternative to my iphone on occasion.  I would like to be able to leave my phone at work (and job home) and then when I get home log onto my macbook and find out if anyone has SMS-ed me=.  Maybe not possible but I thought with iClould and all this other device-compatablity there might/must be a way??

    Whenever I restart my computer, or turn it off and on I have an issue. I always get a completely black screen and it will not move past that. 
    Once I unplug all the USB's and restart my computer again using the power button, I am able to get past it but am given a "Keyboard Error" message. 
    It says:

    I imagine a ton of people are attempting to activate after the update, and the server is getting overloaded. Simple patience, maybe keep trying, and if possible, try a little later. Think of it as all those people lining up at Apple Stores + about a million more.

    I have a similar problem.
    Moreover, as my external drive is split in 2 for (a) regular storage // (b) time machine usage, I can see in the Finder that I can connect to the (a) regular storage part and use it normally (image 1).
    And I cannot connect to the backup part in Finder , nor see it in Disk Utility, nor use it in Time Machine (although it's listed in the Time Machine preferences, image 2), as it does not connect (image 3).
    Can somebody help?

    Go to www.icloud.com and change your password, ensure that it meets or exceeds the requirements, which are:
    8 character minimum, at least 1 uppercase and 1 number, no special characters (*%@^!) etc
