All .XMP data gets automatically incorporated into DNGs, right? (Newbie question)

Dear Folks,
Just starting on converting my camera raw files to DNG. I've got lots of files I've edited in Bridge and ACR, so there are lots of associated XMP files. I just want to make doubly-sure that I don't have to do anything special to insure all that data gets incorporated into the DNG files that Adobe DNG Converter creates, and that once the conversions are done, I can remove the .xmp's from my hard drive along with the original raw files.(And, yes, everything is backed up and archived.)
Thanks!
Ctein

Dear PE and Jim,
Thanks for the hand-holding.
Yes, I ran an experiment first-thing, where I compared how Photoshop/ACR opened the original raw+xmp files to the derivative DNG files, and it looked like the xmp data got bundled in.
But with a coupla thousand files to convert, I didn't want to discover halfway thru that I'd missed something. Better to ask for definitive opinion.
Now I have it! Much thanks.
BTW, still on CS3 for Bridge/Photoshop, but running latest version of DNG Converter (5.2.0.65) as a stand-alone.

  • If you restore your ipad, does all your data get deleted?

If you restore your ipad, does all your data get deleted?

This could solve the "other" problem that you are experiencing right now. You really have nothing to lose by trying.
Backup the iPad, restore to factory settings and then restore from the backup after you restore to factory settings to recover everything. You will also have to sync with iTunes in order to get your apps, music, etc back onto the device after restoring from the backup.
That may totally solve the problem. But, on the other hand, as you mentioned, if the backup itself is the culprit - meaning that the backup is corrupt - when you restore from that backup, you could be right back where you started.
Sometimes, when the "other" cannot be fixed any other way, you do have to restore to factory settings and NOT restore from the backup. Obviously you will lose all data when you do this, but you can still sync your iTunes content back to the iPad and you will not lose any music, apps, books and so on, as long as they are in iTunes on your computer.
Most purchased content can be downloaded again at no charge as long as you use the same Apple ID and as long as the content is still available in the store in which you bought it (Music in iTunes, apps in the App Store ...)
If that does not answer your question, just post again and I will do what I can to help you further.

  • How do I get all TIF files to automatically open into Photoshop?

When I use Internet Explorer, I can set my computer so that all TIF files on a manuscript-editing website automatically open into Photoshop. This doesn't work with Mozilla, and I am always asked to select a program to open the file. Can I use Firefox, and still get all files with a TIF extension to open into Photoshop when I click on them? Thanks!

To change the program that .indd files default to when opened in OSX, right click on the .indd file > Open With > Other.
Then navigate to the version of InDesign that you want to open them with (I have CS6 installed but its the same for CS5). Make sure you have "Always Open With" selected.

  • Getting the dates I have input into the right order?

I am new to numbers and accounting so am workingon a simple expenditure spreadsheet.
When I put in the dates which I have amended to the american model month/date/year not uk date/month/year... in this way 12.03.2009 meaning march 12th 2009.
all the dates run in perfect order except they miss out the year part meaning my account for year 2009- 2010 have dates all jumbled up for example...
    01.08.2009
    01.13.2009
    01.13.2009
    01.19.2010 jan 19th 2010
    01.20.2009 jan 20th 2009
    01.21.2010
    01.22.2009
    01.22.2010
how do I amend this so that the dates run consecutively and in year groups too?
I have tried in inspector and system preferences to no avail.
I am grateful for any help... as I am wasting valuable time on such a simple thing... and working out very fast that my accounts reveal an ever decreasing loss during my 2nd year of trading!!! of which I am quite proud!

    Hi re-d,
Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Numbers '08 forum.
Your 'dates' are not being recognized as dates by Numbers, probably because you have entered them in a format not recognized as a Date format, and are being correctly sorted as Text.
From page 57 of the Numbers User Guide:
    *Working with Dates in Cells*
Unless a cell has a date and time format associated with it, when you type a value that
can be interpreted as a date or time value, Numbers might reformat the value.
For example, if you type 1/22/45 or 1-22-45 into a table cell with the Automatic cell
format and leave the cell, the value changes to Jan 22, 2045. If you enter a 2-digit year
value greater than or equal to 50, Numbers adds the prefix “19”; otherwise Numbers
    adds the prefix “20.”
And if you type 12 pm, the value becomes 12:00 PM. You can edit the value if you need
    to change it.
+See “Using the Date and Time Format” on page 62 to learn about the date and time+
    format.
You'll find the Numbers User Guide, supplied with your copy of iWork '08, in the Help menu in Numbers.

    Barry

  • Get a podcast into the right category? UK podcast show in Japan iTunes?

    Hi,
I have a couple of questions.
I have uploaded 4 episodes of my podcast. It is showing in searches fine but not in any of the categories. I set them to language courses in the genre tag in the mp3. Is that the way to get them into the right place in the store?
My account is UK but my target audience is Japan. Will my podcast appear in the Japanese iTunes Store?
    Thanks.

I have uploaded 4 episodes of my podcast. It is showing in searches fine but not in any of the categories. I set them to language courses in the genre tag in the mp3. Is that the way to get them into the right place in the store?
Searching just on the category in the iTunes Store is most unlikely to throw up your podcast. There are thousands of podcasts out there, and it would be quite impossible to display on one page the entire list for any category. What you see are 'featured' podcasts, chosen by Apple as being special; please see this Tech Note:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/whatson/podcasts/specs.html#getfeatured
Note that there is no way you can influence the selection other than making your podcast really special.
Incidentally setting categories in the MP3 tags has no effect: you need to set the category in the 'itunes:category' tag in the feed - please see:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/specs.html#commontags
    and scroll down to 'itunes:category'.
You should confine your choice of category to those listed here:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/specs.html#categories
My account is UK but my target audience is Japan. Will my podcast appear in the Japanese iTunes Store?
I'm afraid I don't know the answer to that one: it may be a question of language but al you can do is to post it and then change the Store country (link at bottom of the iTunes Store page) and see what happens when you search.

  • All the data getting exported in the first column of csv while exporting

    Hi All,
In 11.5.10.2, I have a page with advanced table region. Am using OA Framework's export button to export the results.
But, problem is, All the results are getting exported in the first column of the output .csv file. Why such a behavior?
Profile Option of 'Export MIME Type' value is text/text-separted-values.
Any ideas would be of timely help. Thanks.
    Regards, Soorya

From OAF standpoint, it just exports the data. Data interpretation is completely dependent on client machine and excel setups.
Please check the Data-->Text to Columns wizard where we can specify the delimiter(s) on excel.
Not sure if this can be set up in Apps, so that we need not change on every end-user machine.
    Hope this helps.

  • Getting a Song into the Right Key?

I'm trying to use GarageBand as an accompanying "band" for improvisation practice for myself and my students. I can't seem to figure out how to get a tune using only GB loops into the exact key I want. For example, I set the song to E major (and that shows as the master track), and put together some loops for a really nice track, but realized that it ended up being in G major (E natural minor).
Any way to make sure any loops only are in that exact key, or to get them to transpose to that key? I'm sure I'm missing something simple.

The simple solution, but it may not sound to good, is to simply to change the region pitch parameter, located in the editors, until you hit the correct key.
HOWEVER, for audio loops, this ain't a gonna sound too good. My experience is that the loop engine sounds much better at transposition than simple rate conversion in the editor, assuming the use different technologies (the loop engine, same as in SoundTrack or Logic, being the one that transposes everything to the project key).
You could get really tricky: copy all the loops you want to a new folder. Download and launch the Apple Loop Utility. Calculate what keys you need for each loop, set this in the utility and save. You've now just changed the 'native' key for a loop and GB will transpose it differently.
For example if a loop was in C, and you've sinced moved your song up to the key of E, the loop is now a major third too high, so set the loops key (in the ALU) to G#/Ab. You can then of course in GB add this loop to your library.
In the long run, you need loops that match your chord progressions - there's no substitute for that.
AND it's best to always start out your song in the correct key. Susbsequent key changes then work better, since every track moves in sync.

You either need to run a disk repair program on the hard disk, or reinstall the OS on that drive. Both of there require a recovery partition or a Mac OS X install disk.

  • Batch Import .XMP info into DNG Files

I have a few thousand Canon 5D RAW files that have accompanying XMP files created by PS CS2 containing of a lot of metadata that I manually typed in for each photo.
Because of some better ICC profile features in DXO Optics Pro 4.x, I want to batch process my Canon 5D raw files (with XMP EXIF data) by DXO Pro into DNG. My problem is how to batch incorporate the XMP data into the resulting DNG file. It doesn't appear
I found a way I can manually import the data in CS3 for a single photo. However, that's no good for 3000 photos.
Does anyone have a simple batch method that will do what I want? The XMP files are all named the same as the RAW files, so matching up the files is a piece of cake.
Could I create an action that would somehow open the new DXO generated DNG file, and import the XMP file using some type of filename matching process?

Why not simply run the DNG Converter on that folder? It will merge the XMP sidecars into the resultant DNG files.

  • Data load from BPC into BI 7 cubes for Bex reporting

    Hi,
Can we pull BPC planning data into the BI cubes so that Bex reports can be created for combined data from BPC cubes and BI cubes?
Also can we create Bex reports on BPC cubes just like we create for BI reporting cubes?
Let me also give an example of the scenario we face.
We have actuals data in a BI 7 basic cube(Actuals cube). Planning is done in BPC, so I understand  that the planned data gets automatically stored in a BPC cube in BI7 system. I want to load the data from this BPC cube to BI Actuals cube and create a combined Bex report to show actuals and plan data.
    Please let me know.
    Thanks,
    Archana

AS of now, if you report data in the BPC7NW cubes through BEx, you may not get the same result as you get from BPC reports. The reason being BEx won't do the same calculations (for example sign reversals) that BPC client would do. In addition, you won't be able to report the results of the dimension member formulas when you report through BEx. If you have to get data out from BPC cubes to other cubes, you can go through SQE (shared query engine) and that way, yyour results will match with what you get in BPC reports. Once you get data out through SQE into other cubes, you can use BEx to report if you wish.
More functionality will be available in near future to accomplish BEx reporting for BPC data.

  • AE not reading all the XMP data from DNG files

I'm working on a very large time-lapse for a construction company - I have a sunset that is broken between two folders and rendering the folders seperately makes Quicktime unhappy during playback and I get an ugly jump in sunset exposure.
So I combined the two folders in Lightroom (LR) from my RAW files (NEF) and exported the entire sequence as DNG files with simpler numbering. The sequence is about 1560 files and constitutes about 22 GB of data. I created a new LR library from the DNG sequence to make sure it all looked good and it does.
I imported the same DNG sequence into AE, checked a few frames in the preview and sent it out to render. Two thirds of the way through the QT movie, exported in H.264 at 30 fps, I start seeing problems. Huge sections look like the XMP data has not been read, then there's a good section and then bad again. I matched the movie time to preview in AE and indeed saw the same problems in the AE preview. So the problem begain in AE's reading the files from the folder, not in rendering.
I went back to LR for file comparison. There was no problem in LR. All the DNGs look great.
I'm on a MacBookPro Retina with 2.8 GHz Intel processor, 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3 Ram and NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB graphics
I have the standard 69GB cache on an external drive and have 11GB RAM available for AE.
    Installed CPUs =8
CPUs reserved for other apps = 2
RAM allocation per background CPU = 1GB
Actual CPUs that will be used = 6
I have the latest AE from the Adobe Cloud, although I haven't done the most recent update yet.
My thought was to break the folder up into smaller segments for rendering, but that's not the problem. I see the XMP hasn't been consistantly read in preview. To me it doesn't make sense that the folder is too large for preview because it's not even rendering it there, just reading the files...?
    Any insight, solutions?
    Thanks,
    Dennis

I am basically trying to export xmp files from a set of low resolution dng files so that I can access my Lightroom edits in the RAW files. I have separated the RAW and dng files in different folders
    Hi Andy,
I dunno how best to get extracted xmp files into the raw folders, but if you are comfortable with exiftool, you can use it to extract xmp sidecars from DNG files.
If you want a turn-key solution which does not required you to futz with exiftool, then consider a free plugin I wrote:
    robcole.com - xEmP
It will allow you to create xmp sidecars with all your DNG adjustments and metadata (which can then be applied to the non-dng raw files).
However, if you won't need the DNGs in your catalog afterward, then the easiest way is to convert them back to proprietary raw format using this plugin (also free, and I wrote it):
    robcole.com - UnDNG
Conceptually, you can think of it as converting the DNGs to proprietary raw format, but note: it doesn't convert anything, it just allows existing raw files that are NOT in the catalog, to replace the DNGs that are in the catalog. All adjustments and metadata and everything else will be preserved (just like when you convert a proprietary raw to DNG format).
