Allocated space without DBA_DATA_FILES

Hello good folks,
I'm building a process that will check the space of the tablespaces and send feedback. So my question is this : how can I have the allocated space of a tablespace without using dba_data_files?
My user account doesn't have access to dba_data_files and will not have select permission granted any time soon.
So how can I circumvent this restriction?
Thanks everyone,
Frank

Helio : I don't see how creating a table would help my situation. I'm not planning on having access to that view.
Paul : I don't want to enter in too many details, but basically, the DBA departments wants us to monitor the tablespace usage without giving us the tools to do it so they can bash my department for blowing quotas. They give us reports indicating the allocated space, which is how I know my information is higher than supposed.
I want to create a process that will check daily and give us feedback so we can act on it if need be.
I could always just check the Free space, but I would prefer having a complete solution that includes the allocated space.
Asking to the DBA for rights on the views is always possible, but I would rather do without if it's possible.
Eduardo : I'm beginning to think that this may well be the final answer to this question, meaning there is no solution without asking for help. Damn things can be complicated for no just reason sometimes.

I have never heard of a relation between the enabled state of Time Machine, and boot. Its probably coincidental.
Try booting in Safe Mode (hold down shift key, whilst booting). Then check for apllications in your Users & Groups preferences that are starting up with login. Disable all startup apps, then eanable them one at a time, booting normall. See which app is possibly hanging.
You can also try doing a Repair Permissions and Repair Disk on your startup drive. This must be done within Disk Utility when booted to your Recovery Partition. To boot to the Recovery Partition, hold down the OPTION key while booting, and select the Recovery Partition drive to boot from. Then run Disk Utility.

  • How to delete Ubuntu virtual desktop and free up allocated space in windows 8?

I have tried out Hyper-V for the first time to install Ubuntu desktop. During the installation process, 10GB of space is allocated. I believe this space would have been  created as a separate partition and formatted

Now I would like to remove the Ubuntu virtual desktop and free up the allocated space. I have deleted the desktop from the Hyper-V manager. Is this sufficient to free up the space?

You must delete the VHDx that you created when you created the VM.
This is the virtual disk that Ubuntu was installed into - you will not see this as a volume, you will see this as a VHDx file.

  • Ever since my iphoto library crashed (ran out of space without warning) my mcbook pro has been slow, unresponsive, freezes in sleep mode and won't restart... please help.

    Hi everyone
Ever since my iphoto library crashed (ran out of space without warning) my mcbook pro has been slow, unresponsive, freezes in sleep mode and won't restart...
I've since backed everything up on an external hard drive, removed the corrupt library, even reinstalled the operating software and there is now hardly anything on the hard drive, it still runs painfully slow. If I close the lid which puts it in sleep mode, it either doesn't go into sleep mode but instead the battery just gets drained and I find it completely empty of power (it won't start again unless plugged in), or it goes into sleep mode but just freezes when I try to reopen.
In iphoto (reinstalled) but even other applications it is painfully slow, not like a mac at all!
I am trying to go to genius bar with it but thinking maybe someone in this forum can help...
    Many thanks
    Andre

  • Spaces without any content ?

I use some applications like Painter or Blender, wich I don't want to run in full screen mode.
It would be great to create Spaces without any content.
Any idea how to realize it?
    Bye Michael

You have to assign the applications to a Desktop so they don't carry over. Decide where you want what application. Then go to that Desktop, control - click on the application in the Dock, select Options and assign it to a Desktop. Repeat as required. That is how you assign the applications so you can have blank Desktops.

My kids have downloaded tons of free games apps from iTunes.  I need to free some iCloud space without having to upgrade my account.  How do I delete those apps in the cloud?

Apps can't be deleted from iCloud as they only reside in the App store.  Also, the apps themselves aren't taking up space in your iCloud account.  They only thing in your iCloud account would be the app data that is backed up as part of their iCloud backup, but this generally doesn't use much space.  You can check how much is being used, and eliminate specific apps from being included in the backup, by going to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage on their device, tapping the name of their device under Backups, then checking the apps listed under Backup Options (tap Show All Apps to see them all).  Turn an app to Off to exclude its app data from being backed up.

  • Is there a way to free up space without sync?

I'm currently traveling and therefore unable to sync to my desktop as I normally do. While on the road I've taken a few photos, etc., and now find I'm running out of space. Subsequently, I've deleted a couple of large apps I never use, and several old photos I know I have stored, but my iPhone is still showing as full. Apparently, the files I've deleted aren't really gone until I sync? It will be some time until I'm home again and able to access my desktop. Is there a way to free up space without a sync, or am I stuck with a full phone until I return?

You can import the photos taken with the iPhone to another computer as long as you
TURN OFF auto-sync on the other computer first. Then delete them and that should free up space for you.
You would import the photos off the iPhone to the computer just like you would from a digital camera.
    THen burn them to CD/DVD.

  • Is there a way to get rid of the other space without restoring

Is there a way to get rid of the other space without restoring on an ipad

RESTORE NOT NEEDED TO RESOLVE "OTHER" SPACE ISSUES
I may have a solution for this as I also experience this problem on the iPad 4 (retina display) 16gb where by I had over 2gb as "other space"
First and foremost "other space" should be between 800mb and 900mb - these are preferences, apps, syncing data (not the actual photos your contacts yo may sync)
I plugged my iPad into computer and did my normal sync
    I ejected the iPad.
I turned the iPad off by pressing the on/off button and then sliding across to power down
    I waited 5 - 10 minutes
I turned the iPad back on and waited another 5 - 10 minutes
I connected it back to my PC and opened iTunes
I noticed that the 2.74gb "other" space reduced to 835.4mb within a few seconds.
I downloaed iExplorer and installed it (free version will do the trick)
Have iTunes open with iPad already connected
    Open iExplorer and click "demo"
Under your iPad navigate to Media> Photodata> Thumbnails
Here you will see the following file names: 158x158, 240x240, and 332x332 with the extension .ithmb - make a note of these file sizes.
Right-click each one and hit delete and click ok if a warning sign comes up
    Eject iPad using iTunes
    Close any open apps
Do a hard reboot - hold the home button down and the on/off button together until the screen goes black and turns off - this can take up to 10-15 seconds to do
Sometimes the iPad may reboot by itself, and sometimes it may not - if it doesn't use the on/off switch to turn it on.
Open iTunes and then iExplorer and navigate to Media> Photodata> Thumbnails once again
You will see the same files you just deleted - but instead of being the size you made a note of, they will be considerably smaller.
Go to iTunes and check your "other" space and should be within the 800mb to 900mb
This also works with the iPhone 4s and other devices running iOs 4 onwards.
I have several devices currently on iOs 6.1.1 and all the "other" space currently shows between 800mb and 900mb which would appear to be normal
I hope all this helps and please let me know if it solves or doesn't solve your issues

  • HT201612 When I installed Windows on my Macbook I allocated too much disk space to Windows, thus reducing the disk space available for MAC OS 10.6. Can I reallocate disk space without damaging existing Mac aplications, files, etc?  Thank you.

n I use Boot Camp (Assistant) to change the percentage of disk space allocated to each, without damaging existing MAC applications, files, etc.?  Thanks in advance.

make sure Windows will also have the room for updates, cache, page, hibernation, and growth with 20% free space; and Mac should also have 20% or more after accounting for growth.
Spend the $19 and save the headaches with CampTune but backup both - CampTune should help with that chore also but also TimeMachne and clone OS X.

  • How can I create hard disk space without emptying the Trash?

I moved everything in my Pictures folder into Trash, not realising the folder also had the iPhoto library.
So now all my photos have gone from iPhoto, though they are still in the Trash folder, which has not been emptied.
I have attempted to restore in two ways:
    1)  Through Time Machine (which has most but not all of the iPhoto library backed up, and
    2)  By dragging the iPhoto library from Trash into Pictures.
In both cases the restore action fails because during the process I get the message that the start up disk is running out of space.
One way to create space would be to empty the Trash, but I can't do that because I would lose the photos not backed up on Time Machine.
I was not aware of any space problems previously, so I wonder if something I have done in this process has filled up my hard disk?  But in any case, the immediate problem remains - how to create space (which will hopefully allow me to restore the photo library), without clearing out the Trash folder.
Thanks for reading this, and any advice will be much appreciated.

The following comments are really off topic because unfortunately they come too late to help you in your particular case.  They may even amount to venting.
The way iPhoto hides your photos in packages that are not readily accessible in the Finder—because you have to Control-Click and open the package to show its contents first—is the main reason I immediately delete iPhoto from my hard drive whenever it gets installed by an OS installation or upgrade.  I hate the "Libraries" paradigm in Apple's Apperture and in Adobe's Lightroom.
I much prefer the Adobe Bridge paradigm which is totally transparent and instantly reflected in the Finder, just as any changes you make in the Finder is instantly reflected in Bridge.
After years of trying, I've given up trying to find somene's ear at Apple to let them know how unacceptable iPhoto is (on so many levels).
Similarly, I have disabled Time Machine on my Leopard boot drive, preferring to rely on SuperDuper, although my main working boot drive is a Tiger volume.  Because of their intrusiveness, I've also permanently disabled Spotblight and the Dashboard on all my OS installs.

  • Calculate free space without reorg

    Hi DB-Gurus,
we  are currently on AIX and Oracle 9.2.0.6.0. The SAP System is BankAnalyzer, which is an add-on to a BIW (3.5). Data is loaded into the system via STS, a tool from a third party vendor. All relevant tables (BankAnalyzer and STS) are in one tablespace, the size of the tablespace is about 1 TB, of which STS-tables occupy about 400 GB. STS produces a lot of redundant overhead which we now want to archive and delete on a regular basis.
<b>Without</b> a DB-reorg, is there a way to tell how much space is currently free in the DB, and how much space ist occupied? As I understand, DB02 will keep showing the same figures until a reorg is done, even though we have deleted 200 GB from the tables. We need a way to tell the current free space in order to control DB-load and to calculate future DB costs.
We are using database managed tablespaces. If we can't reorg the whole tablespace or DB, will fragmentation over time (archive & delete old STS-data every 3 months and load new data on a daily basis) reduce performance, even though we reorg the index tables?
If we could identify the tables affected from the regular delete and update processes, is there a way to reorg just these tables? Would this be an advisable way to reduce DB-maintenance and increase DB-performence?
Thanks for your valued input & kind regards,
    Mark
PS: yes, we are planing an upgrade to 10.2 sometime soon.

    Hello Mark,
    at first:
<b>>> Since I am not deep into the DB stuff (yet )</b>
That's no problem man ... nobody can know everthing...but i would recommend some extern support, if you don't have the know-how in-house. This topic is pretty deep on database level to make any suggestions or definitive statements...
But now lets start with your questions.
<b>>> STS produces a lot of redundant overhead which we now want to archive and delete on a regular basis.</b>
    That's the first good idea
<b>>> Without a DB-reorg, is there a way to tell how much space is currently free in the DB, and how much space ist occupied?</b>
I don't know any SAP possibility to show this (because i don't use man SAP features for analyzing problems / reorgs,etc..), but i can show you some possibilites on database level.
    At first some helpful views/tables:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96536/ch2451.htm#1317269
INDEX_STATS - You have to analyze the index first with an ANALYZE INDEX and then you can query the view index_stats in the same session (that's important!). The columns DEL_LF_ROWS, USED_SPACE, PCT_USED are very interesting in your case.
The problem with INDEX_STATS is that you will lock the segment with the ANALYZE command.
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96536/ch2152.htm#1303953
ALL_TABLES - This values are populated if you collect statistics for the table, but the values are not as clear as the index ones. The column EMPTY_BLOCKS does not count the empty blocks.. it only counts the blocks that are not formated yet. The column AVG_SPACE is more interesting but you have to set it in the context of some other values.. its really difficult to explain this over the internet without any table values.
<b>>> We are using database managed tablespaces. If we can't reorg the whole tablespace or DB, will fragmentation over time (archive & delete old STS-data every 3 months and load new data on a daily basis) reduce performance, even though we reorg the index tables? </b>
I don't know what you mean with database managed tablespaces. Do you mean data dictionary managed ones or do you mean locally managed ones? But this does not have any affects on the block filling logic (only on extend logic is affected by that)... the block filling logic only depends on automatic segment space mangement or not. You can not make any over-all statement if the performance would be better or not. It depends on so many factors like execution plans (access pathes), reused blocks, etc... Normally the "freed" space is reused, but the performance can be as bad as before if the same blocks are touched (for example index range scans, full table scans, and so on...)
<b>>> If we could identify the tables affected from the regular delete and update processes, is there a way to reorg just these tables? Would this be an advisable way to reduce DB-maintenance and increase DB-performence?</b>
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96536/ch2146.htm#1303064
You could identify these ones if you activate the monitoring attribute on the tables and after that you can query the view ALL_TAB_MODIFICATIONS. The data which is populated in that view are the counters since the last collected statistics on the table.
The same as above you can not make any over-all statement if it is good or bad... it depends on so many factors if it will increase the db performance. You can reorg single tables.
I hope it helps a little bit, but if you don't have any experience/know-how on oracle .. it will be really difficult to do any further analysis on that topic.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • Bolding all type before en space without using nested styles

I'm trying to have all the words before an en space in all paragraphs made boldface without using nested styles. The nested styles work great for print, but don't seem to do the trick for epubs, such as this project.
    For example:
    Car Ferrari GTO
I tried doing a find/change for all the text formatted with the nested style, changing the nested style to no char. style + Bold. But for some reason the nested style stays attached, and if I delete the character style that is called for in the nested style, the text loses its bf.
    Thanks for any help!!

Silly me -- that trick uses another sort of workaround.
