Allocating Disc Space problems

I recently upgraded to Leopard from Tiger on my iMac G5 (PC processor) and haven't had any issues. However when I go to capture footage in FCE the program freezes up - it says that it is 'allocating disc space' and then the pinwheel of death shows up. I'm using external HD's and wonder if that might be an issue with the upgrade. . .

Please give your full system specifications, what computer, what drives, what camera or deck, how everything's connected, what settings are on the media, what settings you're using in Final Cut, and finally what version of the software, of the OS, and of QuickTime are you using

  • Insufficient Disc Space

I have a text alert appearing when I try and add photos to the library.
The disk containing your iphoto library is running low on space are you sure you want to continue?
I have 800 gb free space on my hard disc and circa 10K photo in Iphoto.
    I press yes.
I get a message error writing to disc "iPhoto cannot import your photos because there was a problem writing to the volume containing your iPhoto library."
If I have disc space and iphoto can handle 250K photos what is the problem?
Does Iphoto have an allocation of disc space?
If so how do I expand it?
    Regards
    John

This seems to be a bogus message and likely indicates an issue with the iPhoto Library.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Disc space on external hd vanishes

    Hi all,
any help on the two following problems is greatly appreciated:
I have a MBP (Leopard) to which I periodically connect various external USB-harddrives for backups, photo-editing, etc. I keep having two issues that I haven't been able to resolve by searching the forum and the web:
    1) Two of the hds are small pocket USB-drives (Western Digital 320 GB, Medion 160 GB) which are formatted in FAT32. To my knowledge, I should be able to read and write, as well as delete, with the disc adjusting the available space. Unfortunately, the drive will not render previously occupied disc space. I.e. when I copy a 40 GB photo-folder from my internal HD to the external 320 GB one, and afterwards delete it, the disc space is still indicated as used in the info-tab, and the available disc space is still down to 280 GB. I've come as far as to not having enough disc space for my needs, but also don't have enough space available on either hd to back everything up on one and reformat. I am, however, not convinced anyway that this would solve the problem as the discs were formatted using my own MBP the first time around as well! Also, it seems to be a systematic error, because it's happening to both drives (they're both fairly new, < than 1 year old).
    2) My third external hd poses another problem, which might be easily solved: In this case, the drive is a bit older (but still works fine) and was previously used with a WIN-laptop - it is therefore still formatted in NTFS. In order to be able to also write on it using my MBP, I downloaded this program:
    <a class="jive-link-external-small" href="http://">http://kent.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/catacombae/NTFS-3G_20 09.4.4-catacombae.dmg
It resolved the problem immediately after the install, however, a today (a day later, after having had the MBP shut down and restarted) it is not working anymore. Even after installing the software again, no success.
Any ideas or suggestions? I will be a MUCH happier person if I can get all my back-ups done very soon, so PLEASE help
    Thanks a bunch!!

    Hi neuroanatomist,
many thanks for the swift reply - I did as you said and was in fact able to free up the missing disc space, big YAY!
I do have a quick follow up question though, if I may:
I simply went ahead and emptied my trash whilst having the two external USB-drives connected (as you suggested). If I wanted to, however, for whatever reason not delete my MBP-trash, is there any other way to get rid of the invisible .Trashes folder (or empty it, if that's the more practical/desirable solution)? I have to admit that I wasn't even able to find/see the folder, because I do not know how to make invisible folders visible in this case...
As for the commercial software: I will give it a try if I have not figured out another way by the end of the week. So if anyone else has a suggestion as to how I could solve the problem without spending any money, I'd still be grateful for a quick shout.
Again, thank you neuroanatomist!! (EDIT: ....and JoeyR, of course :))

  • Try to burn Blu Ray. It says: Not enough disc space

    Hi everybody,
I try to burn a blu ray disc. My Blu Ray Writer is: HL-DT-ST BD-RE BH10LS30
    I use 25GB BD-R Discs from Verbatim.
If I try to burn a 20GB *.iso file, every tool I tried says immediately: There is not enough disc space. What is wrong?
Even if I try to burn smaller files to Blu Ray, it always says: There is not enough disc space.
    I'm confused
    Regards
    Maik from Germany

The 'There is not enough disc space' message appears immediately. It doesn't matter if the output file is 500MB or 20GB.
I tried different BD-R discs. It is always the same message.
    I found a similar case:
I am trying to burn a blu-ray disc but having problems.
Do I really have to buy a 90$ tool so I can write my movie on BD-R?

  • OK to remove MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.6.dmg from Downloads folder to free disc space?

To free disc space I've been removing old files.  MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.6.dmg is by far the largest, at 1 GB.  I seem to recall using this file when I had to revert back to 10.6.6 after having font problems with 10.6.7.  I believe it's OK to just remove it to a backup source, but want to check before doing that, just in case.  Thanks for your council and any enlightenment on the function of such update dmgs, once they've been used.

IMHO you have a more serious problem here. If 1 GB is going to make a difference in the amount of free space you can notice then your disk is probably too full and you should be looking for more drastic solutions to gain free space such as deleting your files.

  • Available Hard Disc Space

I have an iMac4 which I bought a year ago with 500 Gb of hard disc space. I had an iBook with 40 Gb of space and when I got my new machine I transferred all the info across straight away. The strange thing was that I then appeared to have used about 250 Gb of the space on my new HD. This has puzzled me for tha past year! How does 40 Gb expand on transfer to take up nearly 250 Gb of space??
I have just looked through some past posts and downloaded 'WhatSize' to see if that can shed any light on the problem. Unfortunately it hasn't! It is telling me that I have a capacity of 465 Gb, I've used 281 Gb and have 183 Gb available. There is nothing strange or startling on my Mac. I have MS Office 2001, some itunes and some photos. Nothing outrageous as we just use the Mac for normal, low level family stuff.
'What Size' show that that the HD is using the following space:
    24.9 Gb Users
    9.83 Gb Library
    6.93 Gb Applications
    2.82 Gb The Sims 2.localised
    1.64 Gb System
    1.96 Gb private
    513 Mb usr
388 Mb Applications (Mac OS 9)
Those are the main ones followed by a list of others (about 15) none of which takes up more than 240 Mb. When I add up all of the above it makes about 50 Gb. Where's the other 230 Gb gone?!!!
I would be grateful if anyone could shed some light on this for me.

    Hi Alun,
Apple stopped selling iMac G5s in Jan 2006 so it seems odd that it's only a year old. I suspect that you have an Intel iMac. Could you check the processor in  > About this Mac.... Thanks.
465Gb is the correct figure for your hard disk. Data is stored in a binary fashion but hard disks are sold in decimal notation. The conversion calculation for Gigabytes is
    (500 x 10003) / 10243 = 465.66Gb.

  • What in Windows 7 can I safely delete to free up disc space?

...I made a rather serious error by creating only a 12 gb partition on my MB Pro for Boot Camp; somewhere I'd read that the Windows installation was only going to be 5 or 6 gig, and I really just need to run Quickbooks on it. But the installation sucked up almost the entire partition, and I'm looking for things to delete. I deleted "Microsoft Games" and disabled the paging file, but I'd love to free up more space (I already tried the "free up space" thing in the control panel, which did delete a bunch of temporary files). Backing up and re-installing the Mac and Windows partitions so I can increase the size of the Boot Camp partition would be an amazing root canal, so if anyone has any tips on how to free up some disc space on there without killing myself, I'd appreciate it!

    Hi George,
seems like you already have done most of what you really can do with such a problem.
You might wanna have a look at the installed programs (from the 'Software"-Tab) to determine if you can uninstall any not-needed programs.
However, 12GB for Windows 7 is indeed too small a size, so you should really think about increasing the partition size.
Either by going the "root canal"-road with deleting your Windows and redoing the installation again with a bigger sized partition.
Or by using something like CampTune form Paragon http://www.paragon-software.com/home/camptune/
But since you are "fumbling" with both your Windows partition and your OSX partition, you shouldn't use it without having/making backups before.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • Disc Space error on Photoshop CS6 Extended install

I am attempting to install Photoshop CS6 Extended (win version) on my Windows 7 ( 64 bit) machine. Core 2 duo CPU @3.16gh with 8 gb or ram.
The machine meets all the minimum requirements and has more than enough disc space.
This is the error I get during initial extraction. "A problem occured while extracting some files. Check available space on your computer and write privileges on the destination folder. "I am the admin, the folder has permissions set correctly.
Also, I tried to read the "installation instructions" found in the CD and am unable to read the file as it says it is corrupted. Anyone else running into this issue?

if that's a problem with your cd, download a trial of ps cs6 and install/activate using your serial number:
if you follow all 7 steps you can dl a trial here:  http://prodesigntools.com/adobe-cs6-direct-download-links.html
    and activate with your serial.
if you have a problem dl'g, you didn't follow all 7 steps.

  • HD space problem in iMovie projects

I'm having hd space problems with one of almost two identical iMovie projects. I'm looking for a way to reduce size (or free up space with in the overly large project.)
Both projects were imported same...firewire from camera.
Both are about same length...approximately 1.25 hours.
Both have approximately same number of clips and are at the same stage in the process...some minor editing...no titles or transitions in either.
However, one project is 14gb in size, the other is 54gb. This is obviously causing space issues with my 160gb hd. (I rarely have a project over 25gb...even with lengthier projects with titles and transitions,)
When I view trash info for larger project in iMovie, it shows 12gb, but when I delete, space is not cleared from hd. Project size remains at 54gb.
The only difference in projects...with larger project I copied some files from a third iMovie project that I've since deleted.
Any thoughts on how I go free up space or reduce file size?
I've restarted computer, deleted iMovie pref file, ran disc utility.
I'm running latest version of Tiger (10.4.11) on eMac. iMovieHD version is 6.0.3

I suspect that when you copied those files from the third iMovie project you brought over portions of the clips that had been edited out. For example, if you have a 20 minute clip in iMovie that you trim down to 5 minutes, the project still retains the entire 20 minutes, even though you are using only 5 minutes of it in the project. This is true even if you empty the trash. As long as any part of the clip remains in the project, the entire clip remains in storage. This is due to iMovie's nondestructive editing feature. You never lose any part of a clip that you trim off. Some or all of the clips that you copied over from the old project may have been edited that way such that you thought, for example, that you were bringing over a 5 minute clip, but actually brought over 20 minutes of material. Thus your project size is larger than needed.
One way to get rid of the space caused by the extra 15 minutes would be to export the clip to Full Quality quicktime movie, and then substitute the Quicktime movie clip for the original clip in your project. The quicktime movie will contain only the 5 minutes used in the project and not the extra 15 minutes that the original clip carried with it. This would limit some of your ability to re-edit the new Quicktime movie clip, because you will not be able to modify or eliminate any special effects or titles that that are contained in it. Likewise, the 15 minutes that you eliminated will be lost. So keep that in mind if and when you delete the old clips. Before you export the old clips to a Quicktime movie, you want to eliminate any unwanted editing that they may contain. If these old clips contain a lot of special effects that might account for their larger size as well.
Keep a copy of the old edited clips until you are certain that your new project is exactly the way you want it.
Hope this helps. If your problem is not the above, hopefully others will be able to offer some helpful comments.

  • "Safari could not download the file because there is not enough disc space"

"Safari could not download the file because there is not enough disc space"
I have 60gb available on my MBA and I have "read and write" privileges for the download folder. This error seemingly came out of nowhere. It doesn't matter if the file is 1gb or 10mb, I'll get the error. All I have to do is remove the .download extension and I can use the file which is complete despite the error.
This is really annoying so any help would be appreciated.

I never used to have a problem with creating a new folder and moving the download into it
But you'll have a problem if you do it now.

  • HD Space vs FCE "Not enough disc space" warning

I'm trying to capture a 1 hour 27 minute video only clip. I've checked by settings and they are for my external drive that still has 346GB remaining. However, when I click "Capture" the device stops the clip after 9 minutes plus a few seconds, saying I don't have enough disc space or memory.
To get around this, I'm re-starting capture each time I get that message and creating 9 minute clips. I've captured video and audio segments up to a couple of hours without getting this warning before. I guess I'm too inexperienced at FCE to know where I should look to override this erroneous message. Even the Capture Window---which shows color bars and space to name the bin, reel, name, etc...says across the top that I have 344.9GB total free space, and total free AV time of 1545 minutes.

The HD is a Western Digital MY BOOK 500GB...
Is this a Firewire HD? If it's USB2 that will also be the cause of your problems.
Video needs firewire because of the method of data delivery in constant stream rather than in 'packets' as via USB.
I can't say why you've not had problems before - some people can capture via USB but it's not recommended and will probably lead to dropped frames and other issues.
Have you checked the formatting anyway? - all I can say is that it's well documented and recommended to capture to a drive to an external firewire and for it to be formatted Mac OS Extended (not journaled) for your computer set-up (as you can't add additional internal drives). Any other set-up will lead to problems.
Perform a search, there's a few posts in this forum referring to capture limited to about 9 minutes.

  • Macbook Pro running Mavericks has fans running and constantly losing disc space

I installed Mavericks on my macbook pro (2.4Ghz intel core 2 duo, about 8 years old) in late october.
Since then, it's been running a bit slow quite a lot, and then has gradually developed more and more of a problem:
    - fans blow alot of the time
    - it loses disc space all the time, including when asleep
I did a reinstall from a back up a few weeks ago and this seemed to improve things for a bit, but today I woke it up this morning to find that my disc space had gone down to 60mb and this continued to dwindel until it was showing nothing, and couldn't function.
Around then I got a SMART warnign that my drive was goign to fail.
Opening it in safe mode it worked, with the fans not blowing at all and with a bit more hard drive space.
I did a bit of reparing permissions in disj utitlity and using disk warrior. DIsk warrior hardware check finds its working ok.
I used Grand Perspective and foudn that two lost+found files were each taking up 4gb of space. After reading around I tired out putting them in the trash and rebotting, and then when my machine was ok in normal mode, I deleted them.
I now have 10gb of space and in normal mode, my fans are even not blowing. So something seems possibly to be fixed for the moment.
    I've turned off dropbox.
    However:
    - the amount of space is possibly still going down (from 10.6gb to 10.14gb in the past half hour) and I'm just running safari.
    - should I basically do a clean install of mavericks?
    Any advice much appreciated!

I should also add that it has the problem where when it goes to sleep it's 50/50 as to whether it will wake up or not. If I click 'put hard disks to sleep when possible', it wakes up fine, but I don't like doing this.

  • Error backing up a catalog: "low on disc space"

I have problem backing up my catalog in Photoshop Elements 11. I have a new computer and want to move my Potoshop catalog to this one. But when trying to back up on the existing PC, it first says «Please wait while Elements Organizer prepares for backup...». Then after a while I get the following error message: «Your system is low on disc space, and Elements Organizer cannot perform this operation. Try removing some files to free up disk space.»
In trying to back up to a directory on a USB-drive with 847 GB free space. Photoshop says that it will back up «Size: 143 041,10 MB» so there should be plenty of free space. I have no problem copying files to this drive so it is accessible.
Photoshop is installed on the C-drive (18,4 GB free), while my picture files are stored either on C:, on E: (46,6 GB free) or on I: (1,76 GB free).

  • "Not enough disc space" when exporting

    Hello all -
I am running iPhoto 2.0.1 with OX 10.3.9. My hard disc has 40GB.
Every once in a while, when I try to export a large number of photos into a desktop folder or as a slide show to QuickTime, I will get an error message saying, in effect, that there is not enough disc space to complete the export. My hard disc at those times has anywhere from 7 to 9 GB of free space. Quitting and restarting iPhoto has no effect. Neither does restarting the computer. Often times editing a photo in Photoshop Elements which then puts the edited picture back into iPhoto fixes the problem - but not always.
More often than not, the export works fine. But these "error" situations keep occurring every now and then.
    Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance for your replies -

  • IPod says there is no music after synchronizing although disc space is used

When I synchronize my iPod classic with my Windows PC (Windows 7) it does not show the music on the iPod after disconnecting from the PC. It says it is empty although the disc space is used.
When syncrhonizing, iTunes says there is music (blue bar) on the iPod. After disconnecting and reconnecting the information is show as a yellow bar and is not recognized as music anymore.
I have trown away the files and synchronized time and time again but everytime the same problem.
When I connect the iPod to an Apple computer it works correctly so it seems to be a windows problem.
Please help!!!!! I am busy now for a week and can't solve the problem!
