Allow administrators to turn airport on or off in Mac OS X v10.4.10

Hello there,
The school district I work for has a lot of Mac OS X v10.4.10 laptop clients, connected to Airport Extreme base stations and third party access points (Proxim 4000) bound to Mac OS X Server v10.4.11 Open Directory Master.
Even though students and laptops are managed by MCX, students still have access to the Airport icon in the Menu Bar to "Turn Airport Off" or "Turn Airport On" option, which is a major headache as the network home folder connection is lost and students have to restart the computer to resume normal operation.
In Leopard there is a new feature in the System > Network > Airport, it is called "Require Administrator password to control Airport" which allows only administrators to turn airport on or off option, so students don't intentionally "Turn Airport Off".
What can be done in Tiger to achieve this capability?
In addition, I would very much appreciate if there is the same type of solution to the Battery Status icon from the Menu Bar, where students can change the Energy Saving settings.
Thank you,
Alim

If you run Software update on your Mac you should be able to update your OS to 10.4.11. Incremental updates are free and since you are already running 10.4.10 I can't see any particular reason your computer won't run 10.4.11.

I have changed my Iphone once last year. My iphone has being playing up for the best part of 6 months. It Keeps deleting all my music of the phone. it freezes and will not allow me to turn it on or off. if i am in the middle of an app it will randomly shut it down and turn the phone off totally (even if it is charged.) It will not charge properly, it has to be in a exact position to charge and even then go's off and on. I thought this my be my charger but the charger works fine on another phone. it will not allow texts to come through properly and sometimes will not not let me ring people it just freezes and i have to turn it off and on a couple of times in order for it to work. it will not let me update apps and the silent button is not silent it still go's of on ringer. The keyboard will freeze up not allowing me to type anything.  It wants me to pay £126.44 for it to be repaire when i have nothing to do with why its not working!

    That is correct.
That is the price of a replacement iphone once your iphone is outside of the warranty period

  • Automate turn airport on or off to save battery

i read a method in a book [are you allowed to mention names of specific books?] to toggle airport on and off by inventing a shortcut for it. i think it was something like system preferences>keyboard and mouse>keyboard shortcuts>+. the book said type the command exactly as it appears in the menu bar, so in this case, Turn AirPort On, and then you designate the shortcut, i think by pressing the desired keys. this is where the problem arises, the only keys i can get to in the text box, are the cursor keys, so now i am left with right cursor arrow, as a shortcut for turn airport on. not the best shortcut, but ok as long as it works, which it doesn't. cant think of anything else so can anyone help? id be very grateful. also, does anyone know how much battery leaving airport on eats anyway? i guess you could design an experiment to test it but it would be kind of a long way around.

Are you talking about iPod touches or MacBooks? The touch is a pretty locked down system and unless someone wrote an app to shut off WiFi, then you are not going to be able to do through a script on a standard touch. Jailbroken, don't know and really don't care. However, it is easy enough to just turn it off with three taps.
If you are talking MacBook (or any Mac), you could conceivably write an Apple script to automate turn Airport off/on. However, you have posted in the wrong forum to get any help. Try on of the MacBook forums for some help.

  • Apple script to turn AirPort on/off?

Is there a way to use Apple script to turn an AirPort Extreme on and off?

I haven't used these tools so I don't know for sure, but doesn't Tiger's parental controls (in the Accounts preference pane) allow you to enable/disable network access by account? Would that work to solve your problem?
EDIT: OK, by starting a new thread I guess you got the same response that I posted for your previous thread. For those interested, this is a continuation of the thread kevin macky, "Account with and without airport internet access", 08:07am Oct 11, 2005 CDT.
If you are interested in trying to automate this, I suggest that you post your question in these areas:
Mac OS X > Mac OS X Technologies > AppleScript
    Mac OS X > Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger > Automator

  • Why can't I turn Airport on in my iMac? It turns off on its own.

I have an iMac with leopard and an intel processor. Airport (the hardware/software responsible for my Wi-Fi) seems to turn on and off on its own.
Sometimes when I log on, Airport is on. Sometimes after it goes to sleep, Airport is on. But sometimes, Airport isn't on, and there's nothing I can do to turn it on. It appears that this is an issue other users are having, but I can't find the resolution. I am looking for easy steps!
I have gone to network preferences, and tried pushing that cute little "Turn Airport On" button. Nothing. I've tried deleting the locations and adding a new one. Nope. I've changed the order of the network devices. I've tried to turn airport on through that little icon in the upper right. It's hollow, and tells me "No Airport Card Installed". It's lying. It was there two days ago. System profiler tells me that there's no Aiport card installed, but it did *two days ago*.
I admit my ignorance of Macs whole-heartedly. I bought my first a month ago - I only spent 3 hours that first day getting it on my network. The next day I spent another 3 hours getting it BACK on the network. Now I have spent 2 days trying to get it to believe it CAN get on a network.
An Apple salesman convinced me how terrific Macs were, and impressed me with how easy they are to use. He made a crack about how inferior Dell was and how sorry he felt for me. I am writing this message on a Dell laptop. It is connected to my wireless network. It took me 3 minutes to connect it, and it never once has told me that it no longer has a network card. Neither have the other 3 PCs in my house.
Can someone PLEASE save a poor, helpless PC user. I clearly need assistance -I read somewhere that I can run a 'script' to turn it on - but I don't know this OS so I don't understand what that entails
If any answer involves taking my Mac into a "Genius Bar", then the "Genius" can keep it. I've never had to take an out-of-box PC to a "Genius" - because it doesn't take one to fix a PC. Please guys, save a PC user. This Mac cost more than the PC I wanted and it's worth a lot less to me right now.

Hi, sorry to hear that you are experiencing these problems, but sometimes a new machine (be it Apple, Dell, whatever) can be defective right out the box - its not unheard of.
If your machine came with defective hardware and is still under warranty (seems to be the case here) then you have nothing to lose taking it back to where you bought it and, if there really is defective hardware present I am sure they'll rectify the problem.
A small note: these problems are not manufacturer-specific - its pointless blaming the manufacturer as I can assure you this happens with ALL brands. Apple supplies quality hardware and software - I know of a user who has had a machine switched on since 1987 without problems

  • Is there a way to turn the wireless capabilities off on an AirPort Express?  I have an AirPort Extreme as my main router and use the express to just extend it. I only really want to you use the express for hard ethernet connections

Is there a way to turn the wireless capabilities off on an AirPort Express?  I have an AirPort Extreme as my main router and use the express to just extend it. I only really want to you use the express for hard ethernet connections. For whatever reason when I have my express extend my wifi at home the download speed from just the express is absolutely terrible, drops to about 1.5 mb compared to when it's on the extremes part of the network the speed goes up to 50-75mb. These terrible download speed really only affects the iPhones as my MacBook Pro usually gets the good speed no matter where it is. I don't believe there is anything wrong with my phone because if I am in the part of the house that uses just the extreme the download speeds on the iphone goes up to 50-75mb. As a note I have an AirPort Extreme on the top floor of my house (second floor) that's where my modem is located. On the first floor that's where one airport express is located. I also have another airport express in the basement that is accessed by my landlord. Any thoughts on how to fix this would be helpful.

It appears that your networking goals with the AirPort Express is to use it as a wireless Ethernet bridge instead of using it to extend the wireless range of your AirPort Extreme. The latter requires that the Express Wi-Fi radios be enabled.
If you intended to use the Express as a wireless bridge, you just need to reconfigure it to "Join a wireless" network instead of "Extend a wireless network."

In an extended network, the placement of the extending base station is critical as it can only extend the wireless network at the bandwidth at which it receives it.
Please check out the following AirPort User Tip for details on optimal base station placement.

What kind of wireless router are you using? more importantly which protocol are you connecting with? Are you and wife connecting using the 2.4Ghz band? or do you have a dual band router that offers the 5GHZ band?  Are you both connecting vie 802.11 a/b/g or n?
The best thing to do is to go into SYSTEM PREFERENCES and select NETWORK, then select AIRPORT and click on the ADVANCED button.
Under the AirPort tab you should delete all the preferred networks and only add back in your network with the proper security settings and passwords.
If you hold down the option key on your keyboard while clicking on the airport icon at the top on your macbook pro. you'll seesome data that will tell you what band and mode you're connecting at, as well as in an indication of signal strength (RSSI) if you write down and post back that information it'll tell us what's going on.

Delete some apps, files, photos, videos, movies, etc to free up some space.
How much space is your Other using? You may be able to reduce.
How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
    http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • Airport Card Disappeared After Turning Airport Off

I successfully used my MacBook Pro to connect wirelessly to the 'net for 2 hours, then turned Airport off for security purposes. I came home and tried several times -- unsuccessfully -- to turn Airport back on (to use my home Airport Express.) The wireless transmitter was functioning, as established by a successful connection by my iPhone. I rebooted and attempted to turn it on several times -- no joy. I tried removing /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist and restarting, and the menubar icon (and About This Mac - More Info) claim that no Airport Card is installed. It seems unlikely that the card would die just because I turned it off. Any ideas?

What Mac are you referring to? (Part of your info at the bottom should at least say what model). Turning it off for security purposes? In any case check System Profiler>Network>Airport Card and see if it shows up there. You might want to post in your Mac model specific forum area.

I am no longer able to turn off cellular data usage for individual apps.
When I turn most of them off, they just automatically reset themselves to allow data usage.
    Any thoughts?

I am definately having the same problem and cannot believe there are no answers or even support that this problem exists.  I never have to post on forumns, I read what is usually readilly availiable for the craziest of problems.
Anyways, the problem is just that, I can toggle off a individual app's setting of cellular data availability, but it changes right back on rescreening.  After restarting, resetting etc, it seems that the big Apple Apps are the biggest offenders.  Music is a very important one, Podcasts can kill you very quickly, app store, Photos, Facetime, Stocks?!?!?!
When one searches for solutions I have to see hundreds of links to "How great is ios7, you can turn off cellular data for individual apps FOR DUMMIES!".  I am a dedicated apple fool since the Apple IIe (long time), but when they run afowl it is usually really bad.  Why offer an on/off switch if the setting is always on?
I am writing just to add support to the existence of this problem, not so much for people to offer ideas of solutions as I now believe it is in the coding.
    Thank you
