Allow external editor file name template to be customized

Currently, only a global name can be set. I'd like to have the ability to set a global name that can be overriden in the settings for particular external editors. For example, if I use the Nik SilverEfexPro plugin as one external editor, it may be useful to specify the external file to be named something like
<filename>-SilverEfexPro.jpg
                  Dilip

No, there's still no way to rename Masters short of exporting them with the version name and re-importing.
The only way 'Save As' is going to work from an external editor is if you use exactly the same file name - that is the only file Aperture has sent out and it's the only file that Aperture is expecting back.
Saving with a different file name is functionally the same as copying a new file into the Library using the Finder - Aperture has no way to expect it. You'd have to save to somewhere outside the Library and then import it as a new Master, maybe setting up a hot folder in Automator for automatic importing.

  • Batch Process - Export Settings - File Name Template syntax?

Can anyone explain the syntax for the File Name Templates in the Export Settings of Batch Process?  Back in the good ol days of Audition 3, I could use ???????? to keep just the first 8 characters of the original filename for my processed files.  In CS6 there are a few templates, but no decent explanation as to what they do or how to create your own.  Can anyone shed some light?

Yes, I believe %n is the original name, but what sort of syntax is available to modify the filename ?  There is one that does "%a\%d\%t -%s" for instance, but I don't know what it does.  And you aren't allowed to use * or ? characters, which really limits wildcarding.
The one I am needing to do is rename original files that are 12 characters long -- 00000x00_001.wav -- to just the first 8 characters -- 00000x00.wav
I should probably put this in another post, but does anyone know offhand how to get the "interpret sample rate as" to work in a batch "favorite" process?  I do the action when I am creating the "Favorite" but it skips that step when applying it to a file.

  • External Editors file format- choose more than one:i.e. either tiff or psd

External Editors file format- would like to be able to choose more than one OR I'd like to be able to easily change between opening a file in an external editor in either psd format or tiff. i.e. PSDs to photoshop, or TIFFs to one or more other editors like Topaz Labs, FX Photo Studio Pro or Snapseed.
While when editing in PhotoShop, one would like to edit in psd format, other plug-ins will not take a psd format, they need tiff. There is  only one choice for external editor in Aperture. is it possible to set up a work around for this?
This issue is also discussed on http://www.apertureexpert.com/tips/2012/1/25/using-3rd-party-apps-with-aperture. html

    Here's my thoughts...
    1. You are a bit confused and I wonder how you can determine a file is a PSD or a TIF by looking at it?  Not all print drivers can recognize PSD's, but can recognize TIF ( this means almost all output devices can interpret TIF's no problem ).  That said, PSD's can manage layers better than TIF's which add to file size each layer you include in the TIF.
    2. Never say never.  This all depends on the file's use.  Layered TIFs can add complexity in which a print driver can or cannot deal with.  As you work on an image, you may want to merge layers for whatever reason(s) and you always have the option to flatten whenever you feel like it.  However, It is also a good idea to dupe the file as you move along.  That means you always have a layered version to fall back on should you need to edit later on.  I also Place transparent PSDs in Illustrator files with no problems.  But, I save as EPS in Illustrator and when I do that, then the file is automatically flattened.  This is perhaps what the internet was talking about.
    3.  Yes, see number 2 above.  There's no such thing as automatic flattening of TIFFs.  Again, this all depends on the printer and whether or not it can print while retaining original layers.  Some do, some don't.  Most of the time, I edit in PSD with layers intact.  Then, when I prep the file for printing, I will save a copy as a flattened TIFF so the file streamlines through the RIP and Print process.
    4.  Makes no difference.  Use 'em if you've got 'em.
Try to get some good resource material at a library or college bookstore or barnes & noble.  Also, get Adobe's Print Publishing Guide.  This is a good reference guide.

  • External Editors & File Naming

I would like to be able to name files returned to LR by an external editor with the name of the external editor itself. For example, if I am going from Lightroom to various Nik Software editors I might:
    LR->Dfine->LR->Color Efex->LR->Viveza->LR
As of now, I have "Edit" post-pended to the file so I end up with something like "filename-Edit-Edit-Edit.tif" by the time I'm done. I can manually edit the names, but this would be better:
I'd like to be able to specify a name or abbrevition for the external editor, e.g., Define, CEfex, Viv, Viveza, CS3, whatever and have that added to the filename instead.
Something like: "filename-Dfine-CEfex-Viv.tif" tells me a lot more about what was done with the file and where I left off in my workflow.
Also, the External Editor dialog could use some cleanup. I suggest putting the save/delete/update optons elsewhere as it is not obvious that they are in the Preset drop-down.
Finally, have to select an application and go under preset to save as new, is a non-obvous way of creating a new external editor. How about just adding a "New..." option?

  • External editor file naming question

This topic was covered about a year ago, with 1.1, but I am wondering if there is a solution with1.5:
When I open a file in an external editor (CS3), the file name reverts to the master file name, not the version name. Is there any way to get Aperture to use the version name?
I typically shoot multiple bird species on a single card, so when I download them, I am unable to get my preferred file name for each file on import.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated,
    Thanks,

Something else that may come in handy is this wonderful program and it is free, and no I don't own the company. It takes a bit of time to learn it, but worth the effort. You can edit tags for tracks one by one, or look them up in several databases, including Amazon and discogs, etc. I really like to pre-clean my tags before adding the files to my library since they often get scattered about, and depending on the source, may not even have track titles, only file names.

  • Mac Photos.app doesn't allow external editor

I need to be able to use a more sophisticated editor. I've always been able to do so with iphoto. What's the matter with Apple for removing this function from Photos?
I'll have to keep using iPhoto until they put this function back.
    Very disappointed and extremely annoyed!

    exallias wrote:
... I want the IMG_xxxx number to appear under the images ...
If an image or video had no title assigned to it, iPhoto would display the filename in its place, less the extension of the file. This obscured the fact that the title & filename are actually two different things. For better or worse, Photos doesn't do that -- if the item does not have a title, Photos displays nothing, other than the grey "untitled" label when you move the pointer over the title area.
However, léonie (& others) have created scripts & services you can use with Photos to copy the filename to the title. This has been mentioned in many posts in this forum & in this user tip. That service will embed the filename into the title info in the file itself, so even if the filename changes (like in a copy to another drive), the title won't be affected.

  • External editor file format

I would like to edit photos within Photoshop CS6 from time to time, the originals are all DNG format.
In the export dialog box within prefernces I have two queries:
    1. Which file format is best to maintain quality of the photo?
    2. What should teh DPI be set to?
    Thnak you!
    Petre H

    Petre,
you are asking about the export pane in the Aperture Preferences panel, right?
What you select there, should depend on the resolution and quality of images you want to export.
All export format are lossless, pick TIFF (8 bit) if you have jepegs with good quality or TIFF (16 bit) if you have high resolution raw images, but this will result in very large files.
If you use Photoshop for graphics composition and want to returen layers to Aperture, use the PSD formats.
The dpi will not really change the quality of the exported image, but will be used when printing the image to compute the dimensions of the image on the paper. Higher dpi will result in a smaller image on the paper, since more pixels will be needed to print one inch of the image.

  • Watch Folder to Overwrite Sequence Files? – Templated Project with Custom Images

So I want users to be able to upload an image to my server, have it added to a video, and rendered out and served to them.  Simple right?  Maybe my workflow needs adjustment:
I have a project saved with an image sequence render queued, and a subsequent movie file render (of the image sequence) queued and collected. (the image sequence is to utilize multi-machine rendering because of intense effects, etc.)  When a user uploads an image, the server duplicates this template-project collected folder.  The project has a placeholder image that is replaced by the user's uploaded image (into the footage folder).  The server then drops it all in a watch folder for multi-machine rendering.  The sequence renders and the movie renders just fine!  All good.
The only PROBLEM is that when the second instance comes along, "skip existing files" is checked (by necessity to use the multi-machine function) and therefore just keeps the existing image sequence without overwriting.  Every instance of the project is just a duplicate, and so has the same target path for the image sequence.  So the subsequent movie file comes out the same as the first.
    So how can I either:
    1) force overwriting the image sequence
    2) automate unique directories for each image sequence render – without physically opening the project to specify a different target path
-or- 3) move/delete the image sequence folder AFTER movie render, but BEFORE another watch folder render (considering multiple queued projects in the watch folder at once).
    An ideas??  Thanks!!!

    > So is there a way to automate importing the image sequence through aerender and tell it to render a movie?
Are you familiar with post-render actions? They exist to do this kind of thing.
Here's a relevant excerpt from After Effects Help:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/using/basics-rendering-exporting.html#post_render_act ions
"Use the Import & Replace Usage option to create a chain of dependent render items. For example, you can set one render item to use a watch folder and multiple computers to create a still-image sequence, and then the next render item can render a single movie file from that still-image sequence"

  • Custom File Renaming Template Keeps Changing

I'm having issues when creating a custom file naming template in Tiger with LR 1.3.1.
When importing files, I created a custom template to rename the files with YYMMDD_{original file suffix}{Master}.tif to get this: 071217_12056Master.tif. The first import goes fine. But when I import another batch of files and choose the template all I get is 071217_Master.tif.
I tried creating the template by hitting F2 to rename the photo and get the same results. The really odd thing is that some of the other templates have their characteristics jumbled around so that what I thought was the "orig file-name" template might actually produce something like 071217_.tif.
The original file suffix suffers the worst in terms of disappearing without cause. This behavior was occurring in the 1.2 ver. as well. I've deleted every single template thru the editor, recreated them again and still get the errors.
Hopefully someone here can provide some clues?
    Thank you!

It sounds as though your import preset either isn't working or wasn't setup correctly.
Using the full screen import panel, make sure Copy or Move is selected and then select your Import Preset....what does the File Renaming panel look like? "Rename Files" should be ticked, Template should read "Custom Settings" (or the specific rename preset if you've saved it) and the sample should show the correct rename format, like so:
So does yours look like this, or different?

Heya folks, a quick query as i suspect ive probably missed something, i have Pixelmator installed as a cheaper image editor with much of the functionality of Photoshop, and i want to use it as my external editor. How do i go about doing that? I go to Images > Edit With> but the option for external editor is greyed out.
    Any ideas?
    cheers

from page 350 of the user's manual:
To set an external editor in Aperture:
1 Choose Aperture > Preferences, or press Command-Comma (,), then click Export.
2 Click the Choose button below the External Image Editor field, navigate to an
application in the Select Application dialog, then click Select.
The application’s name appears in the External Image Editor field.
3 Choose the appropriate 16-bit file format (TIFF or PSD) from the External Editor File
    Format pop-up menu.
This is the file format Aperture uses when opening files in external editors.

  • How can I find Bitlocker External Key File location?

My Windows 8.1 PC includes a system drive and data drives. All the drivers were encrypted using Bitlocker with the data drives set for autounlock.
I recently decrypted the system drive (without decrypting the data drives) and reinstalled the OS, after which my data drives required the Bitlocker recovery key to unlock.
However, I had "backed up" the recovery keys to my Microsoft account but now I can find only the recovery keys for the system drive. The recovery keys for the data drives cannot be found on my Microsoft account.

    External Key File location?
    Thanks.

    Hi Ridgewood,
As my point of viewer, the BitLocker Automatic unlock volume is also protected by BitLocker Disk Encryption. The user encrypted information is stored in the registry and volume metadata. After a user unlocks the operating system volume, BitLocker uses the
encrypted information to unlock the data volume automatically.
After the reinstallation of the system, the encrypted information is lost and BitLocker can’t unlock the data volume automatically.
Every volume has own recovery key.
As mentioned in your post, the data drive require the recovery key to unlock.
I suggest you to double-check the OneDrive and try to find out where did you store the recovery key.
If you can’t find the recovery key, we can’t help you to decrypt the data volume.

I am new to SAP Design Studio. I am working on creating dashboards and I am using Design Studio 1.2 version. Please suggest some solutions for the following issues. Thanks in Advance.
    1. External CSS file which is embeded using custom CSS option under "application component properties" is not working.
        * I kept the external CSS file inside repository-> my application folder.
    2. During runtime, getting javascript error while selecting '-' option from filter panel.
    3. Unable to select or type dimension name under "dimension filer component" properties.
    4. Getting runtime error for dropdown list, and I have inserted the following code under "onStartup" option of Application component properties.
    "DROPDOWN_1.setItems(DS_1.getMemberList("PRODUCTREF", MemberPresentation.INTERNAL_KEY, MemberDisplay.TEXT, 20));
and dimension values are not populated in auto suggest."

There should be an Error Log under View > Error Log that gives you more details of these errors.  Could you add that?  There is also a View > Script Problems log that provides more details as well.
