Allow marquee, lasso, brush tools in spectral pitch view

When spectral pitch view is active, only the Time selection tool is allowed. Please, allow marquee tool, lasso tool and brush tools to be selectable and usable in the spectral pitch view.

Shift-click option only works to extend a previously selected area to the clicked position and only works with the marquee tool. You can change the size of selected Marquee or Lasso area by selecting and dragging the handles that appear when the mouse hovers over the edges or corners of the selected area. Hovering over the selected area shows the Hand icon so that you can click and move the selected area elsewhere in your audio.
This part shown in the Help file doesn't seem to work as specified though.
"To add to a lasso or paintbrush selection, Shift-drag. To subtract from the selection, Alt-drag."
In AA3 when you held the Shift or Alt key you got a + or - sign added to the tool icon that then allowed you to add to or subtract from your selection.

  • Photoshop: values for type, brush, crop, lasso etc tools broken on Leopard

I posted this in answer to another thread, but decided that it may be helpful to some Photoshop users if it had its own topic:
The following is a technote copied from Adobe's forums, regarding the performance of several menus for key tool settings in Photoshop CS3 running in Leopard:
*Changing values for type, brush, crop, lasso etc tools broken on Leopard*
    *Kirsten Harris - 08:58pm Nov 15, 2007 Pacific*
Adobe and Apple are working closely to provide a fix to a known issue running Adobe Photoshop CS3 and Photoshop CS3 Extended on Mac OS X Leopard (v10.5.1). Currently, when you enter values in numerical fields to set sizes for the brush, crop, marquee, lasso, type, and other Photoshop CS3 tools, those values revert to previously entered values when you try to apply them.
    # While we have identified workarounds for some of the affected tools, this issue prevents people from working as precisely and intuitively as they expect. Providing a fix to customers is a top priority. Please note the following: The fix will be provided through an update to Mac OS X Leopard. Consequently, it is not part of the Photoshop CS3 (10.0.1) update.
    # Apple is collaborating closely with us to get this fix incorporated into a Mac OS X Leopard update. No public schedule is available at this time, but both companies understand the urgency of this fix.
    # As soon as the appropriate update to Mac OS X Leopard is available, we will immediately alert our Photoshop users.
Affected Photoshop CS3 tools: Art History tool, Blur tool, Brush tool, Burn tool, Color Replacement tool, Clone tools (all), Crop tool, Dodge tool, Eraser tools (all), Gradient tool, Healing tools (all), History tool, Lasso tools (all), Line tool, Magic Wand tool, Marquee tools (all), Paint Bucket tool, Pencil tool, Polygon tool, Quick Selection tool, Red Eye tool, Rounded Rectangle tool, Sharpen tool, Smudge tool, Sponge tool, Slice tool, Type tool
Workaround for tools with sliders: Instead of typing in a number, use the sliders to change the value.
Workaround for tools with pop-up menus: Enter a value for the size but don’t press Return/Enter to apply the value. Instead, choose it from the top of the Size pop-up menu to commit it.
Workaround for tools which do not have sliders or pop-up menus: For certain tools, such as the Line tool, you may want to set up presets that you can load to set common sizes. Alternatively, you can restart Photoshop CS3 to clear the problem. You will then be able to enter values again. However, the issue typically re-surfaces quickly.
If additional details come to light, our tech doc Values in numerical fields in Photoshop CS3 revert to the previous value in Mac OS X v10.5.1 (Leopard) will be updated.

Well, that's interesting! Here I thought the problem with my CS1 was just that it was too old, running in Rosetta and all, and would be fixed when I get my Xmas treat of CS3. Wonder if that means when the fix comes from Apple it will also fix the same problem in CS1? Of course, by then I'll probably have CS3.... Thanks for posting this, I would have been mighty annoyed to have plonked down my 200 bucks only to discover that I had the same bugs.

  • ++ Type, brush, crop, lasso etc tools broken on Leopard ++

Apple released OS 10.5.2, which resolves the known issue that numeric values to set sizes for the brush, crop, marquee, lasso, type, and other Photoshop CS3 tools, revert to previously entered values when you try to apply them.
    Go to
    Apple's knowledgebase doc.

I know they are acknowledging it and working on a fix with Apple, I said that myself in my previous post.
Adobe's Leopard compatibility FAQ http://www.adobe.com/support/products/pdfs/leopardsupport.pdf was published when the final version of Leopard was released. It was presumably intended to help users decide when to upgrade. It does not list any issues with Photoshop CS3 and Leopard. If they hadn't finished testing they should have waited to publish compatibility information. At the very least the FAQ should have been updated when they became aware of the issue. Leopard shipped over a month ago and this problem still isn't mentioned.
I installed Leopard after reading that there were no issues, and I was a bit disappointed to find that was not the case. I ran into this problem immediately. I don't mind dealing with some minor issues though, and I'm still able to get my work done. Overall I'd say CS3 is running better on Leopard for me... I don't get random beachballing all the time like I did in Tiger. (That was really frustrating, much worse than this bug. Especially since I just bought a new 2.8GHz machine with 4GB RAM!) Leopard also has a ton of other improvements that have made my work easier, and even fixed a lot of bugs. I'd rather have some new bugs to complain about than deal with the same ones that have been there for months or even years!
    Cheers.

  • PSE7 suddenly won't allow me to use the brush tool on anything but transparency

I was just doodling when the brush tool suddenly stopped working. After a bit of inspection, I found it would only let me draw on transparent areas. What's the fix for this?

Your brush mode in the tool options bar might be set to Behind.
The default brush mode is Normal.

  • Is there a way to move a line drawn with the brush tool

I have created a document in Photoshop CC. I drew a number of line using the brush tool from the left tool bar. One of the lines needs to be nudged slightly. I cannot find a way to select the line to nudge it. How do I do this?

Assuming the stroke is separated from the others cleanly, you can select around it (e.g., with the Rectangular Marquee Tool or the Polygonal Lasso Tool), then just drag the pixels to where you want them.
Note that if you're working on the Background it will fill the space left behind with the color from the background color swatch in the Tools panel.

  • Why is the brush tool in Illustrator CC inferior to the brush tool in CS6? It has less control of fidelity and smoothness. It is terrible - and I'm an illustrator. Can I use the CS6 brush engin in CC?

I loved the brush tool in CS6 Illustrator- by turning fidelity to the lowest setting, and smoothness down to zero, pumping up pressure sensitivity, it accurately reproduced the fine shapes of a drawn stroke. I'm an illustrator, so I don't want artificially smoothed curves, I want the line I drew.
This works really well with my Wacom Cintiq tablet... but now CC has removed this level of customisation for the brush tool. WHY? The program is called Illustrator, and as an illustrator, I can tell you having an accurate and finely adjustable brush engine to illustrate with is very important to me and to lots of other people who can draw, and draw for a living.
Now you get this dumbed down control panel when you double click on the brush tool icon- just one slider, with only 4 steps from 'accurate' (not very) to 'smooth' (almost indistiguishable from 'accurate')... it is like I have contracted a nerve disease - I draw a line, and it forms into something quite different to the path my pen took. WHY? Can I get rid of this rubbish engine? Trying the blob brush - what is the point of this brush? It is just like the old brush, except for a cursor that shows the largest size for pressure sensitivity... and it has the same crude 4 step smooth/accurate adjuster, that doesn't change the line much at all. I have the latest driver in my Cintiq, so I don't think that is the issue, and CS6 works better than CC.
I am very disappointed, Adobe. Do I have to go back to CS6 for all my Illustration work? Please improve the CC brush tool controls.
I am still reeling from Adobe's quiet removal of a whole tool: Inverse Kinematics/Bone tool from Flash CC JUST when I was finally using it to animate, but that's another story.
Honestly, having use them for a while, Photoshop,
Illlustrator, InDesign and Flash CC are, as far as I can tell, no step up at all from CS6, except that you have to pay for them forever.

More on this, now becoming known as the CC pencil tool fiasco, on these fora:
Re: PLEASE PLEASE adobe. The new pencil tool has become unusuble to me
Re: Changing line fidelity with CS6 Brush Tool
Re: All pressure sensitive brush presets gone!
If you are affected by the lower accuracy controls for CC's brush or pencil tools, use this Bug report/Feature request form to let the folks at Adobe know- they are actually hopefully going to fix this.......
thanks to Daniel for setting this up:
hey all, if you are going to file a bug report (as per Neeraj's suggestion), i've made up a draft to make the process easier.  feel free to adjust it as much as you want, obviously; trying to equip us busy folk.

    ******BUG******
    Concise problem statement:
I was told to by Neeraj N(staff) to report this issue based on this link : (http://forums.adobe.com/message/6065706).
The Pencil / Brush tools have lost essential functionality with the addition of the new accurate / smooth adjustment preset. Users are no longer able to specify high-accuracy pen mapping, as the finest accuracy setting is now set to 2.5px (legacy versions allowed accuracy to .5px).
I would think adding additional slider nodes to allow more accurate mapping (while still using the accurate / smooth preset) allow for a minimal change in programming with a maximum return for power users.
    Steps to reproduce bug:
    1. open illustrator
    2. use either pencil or brush tool.
    3. draw erratic and high detail shapes
Results: shapes are smoothed to 2.5px smoothness, even when the accurate / smooth adjustment preset is set to full accuracy.
Expected results: shapes have minimal / no smoothing to maintain the integrity of the artwork.
    Thank you for your consideration.

  • Coloring with brush tool

I was watching one video tutorial where this person had first a color picture, and then he changed it to a black and white pic. I'm ok 'til this point. Then he, using a brush tool, selectively brought some colors back. Hard to explain.. I tried to do it but my brush didn't do anything. So in my case,  B&W stayed B&W.
I tried it with a color picture where was pretty flowers. I wanted everything else B&W but the roses. What am I doing wrong? Do I have some settings wrong or what do you think?
I have a love and hate relationship with Photoshop and just now it's more hate...
    thanks for help,
    Inge

Photoshop's just a tool - an insanely complicated tool.  Don't hate it; love it and it will reward you.
The tutorial was likely showing off the History Brush tool.  The History Brush allows you to select a step in the History list, then brush the pixels back to the way they were at that step.
    For example:
    1. Open a color image.
    2. Make your History panel visible by choosing Window - History.
    3. Do Image - Adjust - Desaturate.
    4. Your History list will now have two steps in it Open and Desaturate.
    5. Click the little box to the left of the step that says Open.  That will now be the source for the History Brush.
    6.  Select the History Brush from the tools palette and brush over your image.  It will restore the color to the way the image looked before the Desaturate.

  • What could cause no propagation using Roto Brush Tool?

Also is it allowed to use masking while using the Roto Brush tool?
Could the arrow colors be exacly the same as the gray of the background?
I have gotten it to work on some other projects.

Unlikely that you could tweak your UI brightness in such a way that it kills both grey tones at the same time, so this is a real issue of sorts. do you see any propagation status updated on teh info plaette? Please check that. If there is propagation, yet it does not show up in the viewer, it may be an issue with your footage. And no, you shouldn't use masks and RB at the same time. It may throw off RB completely. You would have to pre-compose or pre-render the RB layer and work based on that.

How do I select a square brush for the brush tool in CS6?  Sorry if this is a simple question, but nothing has ever been simple for me in Photoshop.

I don't believe there is a square brush among the sets that ship with Photoshop, but there are plenty to download, and it is super easy to make one.
Just drag with the rectangular Marquee tool, fill with black on a new layer, and go Edit > Define brush preset

  • Flash Brush tool grayed out?

Hey, for one reason or another, my brush tool only allows me to select color and smoothing. Stroke, style, scale, and everything else is grayed out and will not let me change it. It is very frustrating, and I'd gladly accept some help.
    Thanks in advance,
    Trevor

    Hi Trevor,
Stroke, style, scale, and everything else is grayed out because Flash has its own default brush sizes and brush shape. You can access these in the tools panel. While the brush tool is selected in the tools panel, look toward the bottom of the panel and you will see several different brush modifiers such as Brush Mode, Brush Size, and Brush Shape.
You can find more information on the brush tool here: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/flash/cs/using/WS9C02226F-F77F-4723-8874-210FE38898C4.html#WSd 60f23110762d6b883b18f10cb1fe1af6-7e77a.

  • BRUSH TOOL NOT SMOOTH

I have an issue with my Cintiq not drawing smoothly in Flash. I need to sketch incredibly fast and loose. Flash used to work just fine but now it suddenly began drawing really crummy. I posted some examples of flash as well as Photoshop, Sketchbook Pro, and ToonBoom Animate Pro which is another vector graphics tool. I thought the vector graphics may be the issue but that app seems to handle the drawing excellently (now if only it did the other things Flash can do). Here's some examples of how they're looking. It may be hard to tell in these already loose sketches but the performance drop is really a big difference in responsiveness between Flash vs the other apps here:
    IMAGE EXAMPLE
    http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l613/jedoralive/LINEUP.jpg

2x3 Ghz Dual Core Intel Xeon
    8GB RAM
    4TB HD
Does anyone know why my cintiq is causing flash to draw so poorly? Occasionally photoshop will also do the same 'crumbly edges' thing? Any idea how to fix it?

Well, the only problem with that is I will lose the interface of Flash which is why I don't use the others to begin with. In AFX you would have to constantly pop back and forth between photoshop and AFX to draw. TOTALLY counter-intuitive. Why go back and forth between Photoshop and AFX, when you can do both, fast and immediately in Flash? Oh - because Flash doesn't actually draw WELL - it just draws. Or if you draw slow enough, and then run some filters you might get the drawing to look better or at least in the ballpark. Why would I settle for Fish-sticks when I ordered Fish Taco's?
What flash does so great is to allow you to:
    - Draw directly into the app realtime.
    - Play and step through timelines and symbols realtime.
    - Work directly in and out of many symbols/compositions at once allowing you to scale things in time and edit all realtime on the fly (VS lugging things back and forth between apps AND also often waiting for rendering.)
    - No limit to the number of nested symbols and timelines.
I think from a purely technical standpoint it makes sense, but from a practical, user point of view who's been using it heavily and extensively since the Macromedia days, there's severe flaws with Flash still. The Technology already exists in other similar applications so I'm hoping either COMPETITORS, or ADOBE FLASH fill in the blanks where the other side fails to so there's finally an app that does everything in one package. Right now it's a very Pro's vs Con's situation where Flash keeps winning out by a small margin.
This isn't a small detail - it's half the reason I use a program. I don't care how great a car is. If the steering wheel is made of Tofu, or the seats are made from old fish, I'm not buying it. I'm sure sitting and using it for a few hours wouldn't make anyone notice the difference much, but when you're talking about hundreds of hours and thousands upon thousands of sketches per month, it really adds up. The things flash does RIGHT, really help take a load off of that burden which is why I end up using it - but then the things it's NOT doing well - If fixed - would really serve to make it an even faster, better, more useful tool. It's extra frustrating to know there are other apps out there doing it, and that Adobe hasn't touched the brush tool since they bought the rights from Macromedia. It's just sat there for the most part. Maybe Ten years ago it was a breakthrough, but so was texting. Currently it's a hobbyist level tool at best.
If the argument is "That's not really why people use Flash though".
    A) Why have it at all then?
    B) No, and they never will if you don't fix it. There's a whole market of people you're turning off with this one shoddy tool.
Fussy? High Standards? Absolutely. I'm using it for more than art to put on Mom's fridge, and if the box says professional, that's what I expect. I've been patient for 10 years, defending Flash's other points to my workplace hoping they'll eventually fix it. Time's up.

  • Problem with pen & brush tools

    Hi,
I've been at this for all day. I reset preferences and reinstalled but it didn't help.
I select either pen or brush tool, set the brush size to lets say 16pt, choose a default width profile and set the brush as basic. As i draw the line/make the anchor point the settings are reset to 1pt, normal width profile and sometimes 2pt oval. I can reselect the line and apply the settings then, as i click on the artboard the settings remain and if i try to draw a new line the settings are reset again.
    I'm using cs5 on mac.
    Any ideas?

    You can't.
You can not have an oval caligraphy brush with a width profile assigned.
There's no workaround for that. It simply can not be done. If you want a profile, you can't use a caligraphy brush. If you want an oval, you can't assign a profile.
There is no way to set up a specific brush how you are asking. The two features are conflicting. The purpose of an oval brush (or any caligraphy brush) is to allow you to alter the width of the brush stroke as you draw. The purpose of a profile is to alter the width of a stroke as well. You can not have two items trying to fight for the same appearance. It's like asking how can I draw a rectangle with no fill but looks green in the middle. You can't.
I believe what you need to do to achieve the appearance you want is to simply draw a path, set a profile, then manually adjust the profile with the width tool if needed. You can get this to look almost identical to an oval caligraphy brush if desired. Which is why you can't do both at the same time.

  • How to engage a Clone-stamp-like 'overlay' for the Brush tool?

    Hi All
As I'm sure many of you know, the clone stamp has an 'overlay' option as a default that allows your cursor to act as a preview of the preselected source that will be cloned/painted onto a given area should you proceed to make contact with your tablet or click your mouse.
I find this feature quite useful, except I would like to have it when using my Brush tool. For example, on a blank layer with a white background, with the Brush tool selected (say a soft brush), and Green as my foreground colour selected, I would like my brush cursor to display a preview of what would result on the layer should I start painting - in this case, a green circle with a soft fade. Bare in mind, this would merely be a preview, prior to my pen making contact with my tablet.
Is this possible? I'm open to any options, perhaps there's a plugin?
    Thanks
    (Win 7 x64 bit, Photoshop CS6 Extended)

That's a really bizarre way to number pages. Make sure you specify this to the printers, as a note to them. It's just not a normal way to number pages and printers would appreciate a heads up on it.
There is no way to automate it as such. It would have to be manually updated when pages are added or moved around.
You will still need two Master Pages
Create an empty text frame on the Master Page on both spreads, make sure they are linked.
Create a text file with sequential numbering from 1 - whatever the final page number is.  (excel can do this quite easily).
Place the text file into the Main Pages at the starting page.
You will then need to apply the Master Page without that text frame to every page that does not need a page number.
You can do this easily by holding down Control (might be CMD on Mac) and then selecting the pages that don't require page numbers - then use the Apply Master Pages and select the master page to apply to those pages.
