"Allow pages to choose own fonts" doesn't always work

I don't know if this is a problem with my browser preferences or with how the browser sees certain websites.
In Preferences, I have the box checked for "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above." It's been checked for as long as I've been using Firefox. (Now using 6.14)
Now, for certain sites, this no longer works -- the site always comes up using my default fonts. Since I'm trying to tinker with CSS on one of these sites, it's very annoying not to be able to see what I'm doing. The page looks fine in Safari, so I'm fairly sure the problem is with my computer rather than the website.
This only happens with some sites. I have no idea why it would do this to some sites and not others. Some sites display their own fonts just fine.
This started happening just a few day ago (but before I upgraded to 6.14). Shutting down and rebooting the computer doesn't help. Clearing the browser cache and quitting and restarting Firefox didn't help either.

At first I thought this wouldn't work -- but after I removed a troublesome font, and replaced it with another version of the SAME font, it actually did.
Bizarro. ;)

  • Snow Leopard Symbol font doesn't always work in MS Office

    I have to share files between MS Office 2011 for Mac and MS Office 2010 for Windows. As a mathematician, I use the Symbol font on my Mac frequently, but when I open those files in Windows, different characters have been substituted for the characters I typed.  Can I change something I'm doing on the Mac side to have the characters display correctly on my PC, or do I need to approach the problem from the Windows side?  Why isn't the Symbol font universally compatible?  Is there another variation in the Symbol font family that would be more compatible?

    You may be using the legacy symbol character encoding, which is not a good idea any more, as most apps have moved to Unicode.  Instead of using the Symbol font, make your characters by going to the Character Viewer (Edit > Special Characters), view = Roman, Tab = By Category, Category = Math, Digits, Greek
    PS Depending on what app you are working in, you might want to use an Equation Editor rather than just typing symbols directly:

  • Some sites don't have symbols unless "allow pages to choose their own fonts" is checked

    With option "allow pages to choose their own fonts..." deselected, some symbols are improperly displayed.
    I think I know what's happening. With the option selected, FF displays some symbol characters with the wrong font.
    But, this doesn't make sense, since these symbols are not in any language font. None of them will produce the correct symbols if selected as the personal preferred font. So, it's incorrect to render these symbols in any of the fonts selected as my personal preference, regardless of status of this option.
    So, FF should use the a symbol font for these symbols regardless of this preference setting.

    You can accomplish what you want with a user style. Here are step-by-step directions. If you need any more help, just ask.
    # Leave "Allow pages to choose their own fonts" enabled.
    # Install Stylish.
    #* https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/stylish/
    # After Stylish is installed, open the Add-ons Manager, User Styles category.
    # Click the Write New Style button at the top.
    # In the style editor window, paste either of the following. Give the style a name and then click the Save button.
    <u>'''Variant #1'''</u><br>
    This is the easiest and safest thing to do. It applies your default sans-serif font to all sites, except those you specify. To specify exceptions, replace the placeholders with actual domain names. To add new exceptions, add another '''|''' symbol followed by the domain name.
    <pre><nowiki>@-moz-document regexp("https?://(?!(example-of-an-exception.com|www.placeholder.site-exception.net)).*") {
    * { font-family: sans-serif !important; }
    }</nowiki></pre>
    <u>'''Variant #2'''</u><br>
    This requires a bit of work on your part. You must know the font that's being used to display the symbols in question. Right-click a symbol and choose Inspect Element. In the Inspector pane, click the Fonts tab. You should see the font family names listed there, labeled with "remote". The actual font family name is below, under "Used as:".<br>
    You're going to want to specify your ideal font first, then the site's fonts after that. If certain characters can't be rendered with the font you want, then Firefox should fall back to the second font in the list, or the third, and so on. If none of the specified fonts contain the required characters, then Firefox will display the Unicode codepoints (rectangles with numbers in them).
    <pre><nowiki>@-moz-document url-prefix("http://"), url-prefix("https://") {
    * { font-family: Arial, "Segoe UI Symbol", FontAwesome, PlaceholderFontOne, "Placeholder Font Two", sans-serif !important; }
    }</nowiki></pre>

  • Content tab in Options..."Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above" and it's box disappeared from my options...I need it back...

    I was having problems with some sites having such faded lettering that I couldn't even read them. So I unchecked the box for "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above". That screwed EVERYTHING up...backgrounds on websites are gone and buttons are hardly recognizable on some pages (including this one). I went back to re-check that box, and that option is no longer in the menu...the whole sentence and it's associated check box are completely gone. I even tried tabbing through to see if I just couldn't see them, and nothing. Absolutely disappeared. I also tried checking and unchecking the same box under the "advanced" button settings and that made a difference on how web pages looked, but did not fix the problem...Help???

    Did you look here?
    *Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Colors : [X] "Allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selections above"
    Note that these settings affect background images.

  • When "allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selections above" is un-checked in the options menu, I am unable to see images on websites. How do I maintain having the box un-checked and still view images?

    I recently decided to switch the colors around in Firefox. I work in a pretty dark environment and having dark colored text on white or bright backgrounds is rather difficult on my eyes in the dark.
    I switched the background to a dark gray, the text to a light gray and both visited and unvisited links to a light blue. Along with these changes, I unchecked the "allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selections above" box.
    After unchecking the box, I am no longer able to view images on many websites. The images all turn gray - as if Firefox has changed their image into part of the background. When I check the box, I am able to see images fine, however, the websites usually revert back to their bright backgrounds with dark text.
    Any help and assistance with this is greatly appreciated!
    Thank you!

    hello bygabyga, i think this will be a too specific use-case to be added as a general feature into the browser. you can make use of an extension though to get this kind of functionality: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/toggledocumentcolors-198916

  • Turning off thumbnail caching doesn't always work

    The standard solution for stopping the creation of thumb nail files doesn't always work. This assumes that since you don't display thumbnails you don't create thumb nails. Not true. If you try to move a JPG created by Windows Media Player as message is
    displayed. This message asks you if you really want to move a system file. The message displays a thumbnail. So instantly a THUMBS.DB file is created. Now the whole purpose of the exercise was to move stuff out of the folder, so that after a bit of fiddling
    you could reorganise & delete the folder. Now you can't delete the folder, unless you mess around and do it later. There is obviously a (non intuitive) work around. But it would be better if Microsoft allowed you to force the delete.

    Hi,
    As far as I know there is no official way to turn off thumbnail caching. The only option in Group Policy is Turn off taskbar thumbnails.
    Local Computer Policy\User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Start Menu and Taskbar\Turn off taskbar thumbnails
    Do you encounter any difficult position that must disable thumbnail caching?

  • "Put" command doesn't always work

    Hi,
    I'm looking for a confirmation that the put command doesn't
    always work in DW8.
    I don't use check in/out, so I have started to rely on the
    Put command, rather than going in to Windows Explorer to copy and
    paste web page changes from Local to Remote (via LAN). But even
    when I know there are differences between the local and remote
    file, the Put command will often report that the Local file was not
    moved to the Remote location because DW thinks the Remote file is
    the same as the Local. I get a log message like this:
    "the file" - same - not transferred
    But, I can confirm the local is newer than the remote by
    manually copying and pasting. I can see a different timestamp and
    file size in Windows Explorer.
    Is this command "broken" in DW8?
    Thanx,
    Chris

    You won't get it from me. I have never had it fail since DW2.

  • Why won't Firefox always minimize/resize? Using F11 is a patchy solution that doesn't always work

    Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
    * [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
    If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

    "Is it intended to cope with NetConnection.Connect.IdleTimeOut of FMS disconnecting clients after some time of inactivity?"
    The answer is no. Stream reconnect is all about trying to reconnect in the event of a dropped network connection. For the IdleTimeOut scenario, listen for the MediaErrorEvent.MEDIA_ERROR event on the MediaPlayer and check for an error of MediaErrorCodes.NETCONNECTION_TIMEOUT. You can handle that however you wish in your player.

  • IPhone 3GS Sleep/wake button doesn't always work

    Recently i upgraded my iphone 3gs to iOS 5.0.1,
    Since then, my sleep/wake button doesn't always work.
    It's pretty annoying, and i hope there is a solution to this issue.
    Thanks in advance.

    One possibility is that your phone is more occupied with "managing" iOS 5.0.1 since it has more features etc. This could especially be the case if you are using a lot of apps.
    Another option is that the button is simply worn out... I used to have that issue with the home button of my old iphone 3g. However, if the problem started occuring right after you upgraded your iOS, it probably is a software issue...
