Allowing other audio programs to transmit to Airport Express

I just set up an Airport Express to send iTunes to my home stereo. It works excellent, but I would also like to be able to send audio from some of my other programs as well, such as Audion and Real Player. Is there any way to do this?

Unfortunately - no. There is currently no Windows application available that provides a function similar to what Airfoil provides for the MacOS.

  • How does Airplay transfer audio file format to an Airport Express?

    Hi, everyone
How does Airplay transfer audio file format to an Airport Express?
Many from the Internet claim that iTunes encodes an AIFF file format into an Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) file format before sending signal to an Airport Express.
    Is that true?
If so, would it still make sense for me to have AIFF files on my music server
or should I have ALAC files instead?
    Please advise.
    Thank you.
    BR,
    George Lien

Many from the Internet claim that iTunes encodes an AIFF file format into an Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) file format before sending signal to an Airport Express.
    Is that true?
Yes. The AirPort Express Base Station (AX) works only with iTunes v4.6+ and is limited to music files that iTunes can read; ie, 16-bit data only. These data, though, can be in any file format that iTunes recognizes, from lossy MP3s at the low-quality end of the spectrum to Apple Lossless and lossless AIFF or WAV files at the high end. It is also important to note that the AX functions only at a 44.1kHz sample rate. When you play 32kHz or 48kHz data, iTunes sample-rate-converts the data in real time before sending it to the AX.
iTunes uses a QuickTime CODEC to convert audio files to Apple Lossless, and then, uses AirPlay to send them to the AX. In turn, the AX uses built-in software that converts the Apple Lossless to an Encoded Digital Audio format. From there, digital audio is sent to a optical transceiver to convert the electrical signal to an optical one before sending it to the innermost part of the audio port. For analog, the AX has a built-in DAC to convert the Encoded Digital Audio to Analog which is sent to the same audio port.
If so, would it still make sense for me to have AIFF files on my music server
or should I have ALAC files instead?
If you have audio files in both formats, I would elect just to keep the ALAC (.m4a) files on the music server.

  • How can I stream audio from apple tv to airport express

    Hello,
i have an apple tv and would like to stream audio to my airport-express. Is this possible?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
It's not possible from the Apple TV 2 or 3.

  • Why has my audio from Apple TV to Airport Express suddenly stopped working?

    Hi.
For over a year, I have had my Apple TV and Airport Express connected together and the audio worked perfectly fine. All of a sudden the audio playback on movies and Netflix had dropped off considerably. I now have to turn my amp upto 70 to get even the slightest sound. Music plays fine to the AE but not Movie Audio.
Anyone else having the same issue??
I'm confused because it's worked ok for a year!!
    Any help please??

  • Whole Apartment Audio ideas using Airplay, TV, Airport Express?

    Hi,
My wife and I are buying our first place (one bedroom apartment) and finally I can make some more permanent choices and I can tech out the house in ways I would not have considered when we were renting. I was looking at systems like Sonos but I cant see why I need anything more than what I already have for the most part. I would like to find out if there are "cooler" options than the simple setup I have in mind. Please tell me how I can improve upon this setup.
    We already have:
    a) 3 flat screen televisions
    b) 4 ipads
    c) 3 iphones
    d) 2 TV's
    e) 1 Airport Express
    f)  1 Airport Extreme
    g) 4 Mac computers
    h) One 20TB Drobo NAS device
    i)  One PS3 (used only for Blueray video)
My basic plan was to keep the main stereo in the living room and connect the TV to my main stereo via digital output.
Keep my secondary audio system in the bedroom and connect the Airport Express to it via analog miniplug.
Get powered in-wall mounts for 4 ipads and put them in the living room (near the couch), in the bedroom (near the bed), in the kitchen and in the bathroom.
In the kitchen I will use a small bluetooth speaker and in the bathroom I will use a bluetooth waterproof shower speaker and stream from the mounted ipads in those rooms.
We mostly use itunes match and Spotify on all devices but also have a huge music and movie collection on the Drobo.
I would just choose a Mac, ipad or iphone and stream to whatever speakers we will be near via Airplay or Bluetooth. The apartment is only 1100 sq ft so distance should be no issue. I will also put some water resistant bluetooth or Airplay speakers on the terrace to stream to at some point.
I would hide the wires in the wall for the ipad mounts and possibly the speakers. The televisions would also connect via analog wire to the stereo systems. Video would come from DVR, TV, PS3, Netflix directly to the TV's or occasionally via Airplay.
The TV's would be in the LR, BR and dining room. I would get one more TV for the dining room TV and occasionally stream to it via Airplay.
We will rarely have more than 2 things streaming at once as there are only 2 of us. Will the Airport Extreme with super fast TWC service suffice without issues?
How can I make this setup better? Do you see any potential problems?
Are there any GREAT sites that have ideas for awesome Mac based home A/V?
Is there a better place to post this?
    Thank You,
    V

    Hello WillMendoza,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:

Ensure that other devices are not trying to stream to the same Apple TV at the same time.
Turn off Bluetooth on your iOS device by tapping Settings > Bluetooth.
Ensure that your Wi-Fi router is set up with the recommended settings for the best performance.
Certain external devices, such as microwave ovens and baby monitors, may interfere with a Wi-Fi network. Try moving or disabling these devices.
If possible, try to locate your Wi-Fi router in the same room as your iOS device and Apple TV.
If your wireless and wired networks are the same, try connecting your Apple TV to the router via Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi.
If the Wi-Fi router has an external antenna, check to see that is it connected properly and in good condition.
Use the Wi-Fi network troubleshooting guide to resolve interference and other issues.
    Best of luck,
    Mario

  • Audio drops after 10 seconds, Airport Express, Windows XP,  iTunes

    Looking for help with this.
Playing most any song in iTunes via Airport Express. At 9 to 11 seconds into each song, the audio drops out for about 1s, then comes back and continues to the end of the song. Occasionally the audio will drop in other places within a song. Annoying to say the least.
I have updated firmware to 6.3, and updated iTunes.
I have also tried changing almost all the settings in Airport Admin, I have it set to 40 bit WEP encryption, "interference robustness" enabled, multicast @2, and so on. If I change these settings, the problem gets worse.
(argh audio just dropped as I am writing this)
I live in an apartment building with several other wireless networks visible.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

    Asus Z71V   Windows XP

Hi. I also had this problem, running Windows XP with SP2
and the latest iTunes for Windows and the latest firmware
for my two airport expresses. I would get a dropout from
both expresses at around 12 seconds after a song would
start to play. This happened for every song.
I noticed using the Windows process monitor that the CPU would go to 100% at around 12 seconds after a song started.
I located the process that forced this, and it was called
'ashserv.exe'. This is the main executable run by Avast
Secure antivirus software. I'm running the free version.
I changed the level for avast from high level scanning to normal and my problem is gone.

  • What other accessories do I need for airport express?

Can I buy airport express and use it as a stand alone system?  On the set up page it said to connect to a DSL network and I don't have one of them.  Will airport express still work?

Can I buy airport express and use it as a stand alone system?
Yes, but its primary design is to operate as a wireless Internet router. However, you can use it to create a wireless network without any access to the Internet.
On the set up page it said to connect to a DSL network and I don't have one of them.  Will airport express still work?
The AirPort will work with any Ethernet-capable Broadband Internet modem provided by most ISPs. It will work with a number of Internet access type services, including: ADSL, DSL, Cable, Satellite, etc.

  • Replacement base station is not allowing other airport express to work

I recently had to replace a faulty airport express which I was using as a base station. I have 2 other aiport express units which are being used to extend the useable distance of the wireless connection, however since the new base station was replaced I find that the other 2 units do not stop flashing yellow and therefore I cannot connect to the internet from those other units

Hard (or Factory) Reset your Airport Express units and re-add them to your network.
The MAC address of the main base station has changed (as you have replaced it) which I suspect is causing your problem.

  • Airport express/dvd movie audio transfer

    hi gang,
my first mac and looking forward to playing and learning.
my question is, if i run a dvd and watch a movie on my mac, can i send the audio of the movie via airport express to pump out of my hi-fi system. the reason i ask this is i do not have a tv and the misses and i are going deaf. so the volume is not loud enough for our ears and i want to be able to crank the hi-fi up in sync to compensate. can this be done through a/port express or would i have to say run a hard line say from the headphone socket to an auxiliary plug to the back of the amp. this means a 5 meter cable which i prefer as a last resort.
    many thanks
    petecombat

    welcome to discussions, petecombat !
    you need Airfoil.
    merry christmas !

  • Bad sound quality streaming audio via Airport Express

I am streaming audio from iPhone to Apple Airport Express (Airplay). Via optical cable the signal goes to Cambridge DacMagic and then to Stereo Amplifier. Sound is not good, there's some kind of 'chattering'.
When using AirFoil instead of Airplay sound is much better, but then gaps appear from time to time.
Please tell me, what can be the reason for it? And how to solve?
    Thanks in advance.

    Mr. Tessarex,
I use the Airport Exreme as router and Airport Express (2011, direct plug-in model)
Some facts I learned from the Airport-app on my iPhone:
    Wireless clients from Airport Extreme:
    iPhone 150Mb/s (802.11 a/n) connection: excellent
    Acer laptop 144Mb/s (802.11 b/g/n) connection: excellent
    The Airport Express:
    240Mb/s (802.11 a/n) connection: good
I bought the song "Love Me Like You Do" (Ellie Goulding) via iTunes.
As you adviced me I tried to play it via iTunes, and streamed it from iPhone to Airport Express.
Especially listening to the bombastic part of the song (from 3:14). Sound was tolerable.
Playing the song from iPhone via Spotify: sound is awfull, totally overloaded.
Playing the song from laptop via Spotify (Airfoil): sound is good.
Playing the song from laptop via iTunes (Airplay): sound is good.
The song never plays 'Excellent' in any way. I Think the song was recorded 'over the top'.
Even when you listen to it via headphone, it sounds very messy, "on the edge...".
I am happy that most songs sound good. So far playing Spotify via laptop and Airfoil gives the best results.
According to the figures from the Airport-app, it seems I will never get optimal bitrate with my current system.
As amplifier I use the Luxman L505u, usually connected tot Airport Express via Cambridge Dacmagic,
but during testing via normal analog cable (without Dacmagic). So far I think the Dagmagic is not the problem.
What do you think, after reading my story?
    Thanks in advance
    Peter

  • I have an airport extreme which doesn't come with a straight audio jack on it like the express. Can I get a converter to go from the dual speaker plugs to usb on the extreme?

I have an airport extreme which doesn't come with a straight audio jack on it like the express does. Can I get a converter to go from the dual speaker plugs to usb on the extreme?

Sorry, but no. The only Apple router with an audio output jack is the AirPort Express.

  • Can i play the audio for rented movies through the airport express

I'm watching a rented iTunes movie on my Mac and would like the audio to play through my Airport express to my stereo speakers. Can't figure it out.

iTunes won't play the audio through your airport express due to the video and audio being out of sync.

  • How do i get non-iTunes audio (like Spotify) to play through airport express?

I'm trying to play Spotify through my stereo using airport express.  I've looked around and saw Airfoil, Airplay, Porthole... but I'm confused as to what I should get.
    MacBook early 2008- 10.7.5
I have an airport extreme too, it's not currently connected, but it could be.

Airfoil will work and it's free to try.
Native system audio streaming support to an AirPort Express is incorporated in newer model Macs and OS X versions, and I don't recall what its minimum system requirements are. Check System Preferences > Sound. Your Express's remote speakers will either appear as a sound output option, or not. If it does you don't need anything else.

  • HT4437 How to stream audio from a Safari web site to Airport Express using Airplay?

I'm able to stream audio from iTunes to my Airport Express using Airplay, but I can't stream audio from SoundCloud.com or any other system audio (not in iTunes) to the Airport Express. It is my understanding that AirFoil can do the trick but I do not want to spend 25$ if there is another way to do it.
    Thanks in advance.

I have played around and it's all fixed (not sure what I did and I don't think it was working all along), Tgara, you're right the icon colour has changed to orange for music (but still blue for you tube).
    Cheers
    Good you got it sorted!
I was wrong about one thing.   Regardless of how I connect (e.g., wifi or Bluetooth), the Airplay icon in an Apple App turns orange when connected to a device, not blue as I mentioned above.  This is probably why you see blue in the Youtube app.
OK, I am retracting all my posts about the airplay icon and it's color scheme.
Seems as if the airplay icon on the music app is orange, but the airplay icon on the podcast app is blue. There appears to be no rhyme or reason to these color schemes or their significance, so I am abandoning all further speculation.
