Almost 90% of the DVDs that I backed up are corrupt...what is going on?

I just purchased my Mac Mini (1.50 model) in December and also purchased Popcorn to back up my DVDs. I use Mac the Ripper to rip the files, then Popcorn to compress and burn. The thing is, the majority of the DVDs that I backed up on the Mini(about 15) ended up being corrupted. Maybe it was the brand of discs that I using so I switched brands, but ended up with the same results. I was thinking it might be my Mac Mini, so we loaded the software on my iMac to see. There were a few errors in burning the disks on there as well. I burned a customized DVD that I created on my Mini using iDVD and it burned perfectly. What the heck is going on?

Legal or not, it appears from your description that corruption isn't due to your Mini, or to the media either.
Since iDVD can burn DVDs fine, it may be Popcorn which does something while compressing the Dual-layer DVD to fit on a Single-layer one, or it could be MacTheRipper while importing (I've had that problem on a few occasions with that App, but it usually gives you a warning after the import).
By the way, are you using "Apple's" internal Superdrive, or an external FireWire drive, and does it have Dual-layer capability ? Some reports suggest that the "silent upgrades" Minis ship with a Dual-layer Suerpdrive. In this case you may not need Popcorn since no compression will be needed (using Dual-layer media) ...
Hint : Open the Apple Menu > About This Mac > More Info to launch System Profiler, and under Disc Burning, you should see your drive and its DVD-Write abilities should display etc. etc., +R DL.

If you are getting errors about there not being enough space on your device, you may want to check to see if Other data is unusually large. You may find the following article helpful:

Were you not plugged in via USB to begin with?
I would recommend performing some resets just to be on the safe side. Unplug the external HD, and try these steps:

There are many reasons this could be the case but whether an optical disc can be read or not is a function of:
The reflective media layer of the disc
Whether the burned disc was a DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW
The brand, model, and production lot of the disc
The specific frequency of the Write lasers that burned the disc
The specific frequency of the Read lasers that are attempting to read the disc
Are the Read lasers in the drive working (it is common for one set of lasers in a drive to fail while others continue to work)
How old are the Write and Read drives (laser frequencies change with age)
Is there dust on the read laser
Is there dust on the read lens
etc.
At one time it was estimated that fewer than 80% of all burned discs were readable in 90% of the drives. That has, I believe improved over time but at the same time it seems the faillure rate of lasers in the drives has increased but that may simply be the result of how many different read and write lasers there are in today's superdrives. Fortunately todays drives are a lot less expensive the replace -- now that Apple no longer installs optical drives in their computers.

I've completely uninstalled iTunes per the support instructions and reinstalled. But I still get the error message each
time I click on the iTunes icon. I went into iTunes support and searched for registry settings and got an error message 404.
It was no help.

Thanks for the question, and great troubleshooting so far. If you continue to see this message after uninstalling and re-installing iTunes, you may need to install the device filter in the Windows registry, as outlined in this resource:

It looks like the developer's of that app, or Apple, have got the wrong search name for it in the store - you could try contacting the developer and pointing it out to them so that they can get it corrected. Currently it looks like you can only find the app either by using the link (as you've included in your post), or by searching for the developer's name (Page Foundry Inc) in the store.
For searching the store, when you search for something then the first result(s) should be those whose title matches what you searched for - so if you search for 'ebook reader' then as there is an app with that exact name it will be first in the results, other apps will then be listed after it.

Do you make labels for the DVDs that you burn?

I am wondering actually how many people make special labels for the DVDs that they burn. Do you? In looking at the choices of Taiyo Yuden blank DVD-R for sale on Amazon.com, I see a lot of descriptors that I assume to be for people who plan on making special DVD labels, which means an extra software program to print them out etc etc etc.

First, "19 years" of video could be a nightmare of footage? How many hours of tape are we talking here? Depending on that, it seems like you have to do some cropping just to sit down and watch anything with your kids. If we are talking only a few hours of video total, for now I would just play the tapes on the tv through the video recorder itself. MOst video recorders have "Video out" and "audio out" that you should be able to plug right into your TV, just like a Gameboy or PS3, and once hooked up you would select the source, just like a VCR, DVD, PS3 etc from the TVs menu. you should have a remote control for that video camera as well so you can control it from the couch. Put the camera in play mode and go.
If you have eons of tape, you may still want to do that option for now, and just fast forward as needed. Afterall, sounds like for now this is not the documentary of your lives, but a trip down memory lane.
Or you could import it all to your computer using iMovie, but realize that every hour i think will take up about 12 GB of harddrive space and you may need to pre-purchase an external HD to import to.
IF you import all of it, you could play the EVENTS (entire clips) without creating a PROJECT (Chosen clips or parts of chosen clips), and you can play it full computer screen by clicking on one of the arrows at the bottom left of the iMovie screen, under the listed events. And you can play that full event computer screen on your TV with proper cables, depending on what Apple computer you are playing from and what outlets (video in etc) your TV has. ALSO you will need to send the audio to the TV separately through the earphone plug (audio out) to the computer's speakers (audio in).
I have no experience with APple TV, mixed reviews, but what i think it does is what a airport express does wirelessly with audio for iTunes and music, Apple TV does for video off your screen? I may be wrong. Basically it avoids the cables. Appleman likely knows this and how good appletv is.

I was told by a friend that Mac sells software that will back up the computers HD to an external HD at a time you set, everyday, or week if the external HD is plugged in to the computer, and is on.
If anyone knows anything about this please let me know.

SynchronizePro is just one. There are a dozen at least. SuperDuper is a volume cloning program that is popular too.

The DVD's I'm burning are not compatible with common DVD players

I guess there has to be others that has the same problem, I have read this thread but can't find any good answer.
All I can find searching here and Google is that I should change the "playback" DVD player, that it's not good enough for me!
I've done a 2x DVD package and I get a lot of feedback that Disc#1 is unplayable.
About the system since everybody asks for that:
MacBookPro - a lot of ram
the prject is on a external drive with enough space
FinalCutExpress - exported to selfcontained MOV files
iDVD (iLife'08)
everything works fine in iDVD - Save as DiscImage - burned in DiskUtility
Errors:
PS2 - reading disc... for 2 minutes - disc error
a DELL pc hangs (that could of course just be a coincidence crash
a TOSHIBA or HITACHI dvd player (new - plays everything) just says LOAD... in display
I've used Toast on the last ones - and they seem to work fine ?:-)

I have this same issue and I don't get it!
I just got done burning a DVD for a friend of the family who died - a slideshow of her life that was supposed to be played at the funeral. The funeral home called 10 minutes before the ceremony and told me that it didn't work in their player! (I've had this problem before with other DVDs I've made using iDVD. What's going on?
I always check the DVDs in my own home player first, and they work just fine - and our home player is not anything fancy.
Anyone have any advice? This is unacceptable! iDVD is not doing what it is advertised as being able to do!!!

After more digging in the Support section here and some Google work, I turned off iTunes Match and lo and behold! I can change the media kind to Audiobook! So, it looks like iTunes Match locked the files up somehow and for some reason.
I went into iTunes Store > iTunes Match > "No, Thanks" to disable it on the local PC.

iPhone 3G has received its last iOS update. If wallpapers behind the homescreen icons is such an important feature for you, you'll need a newer model iPhone.
