Almost new build hangs on Starting windows 7 screen

I "upgraded" an old build with the motherboard and processor. I have the OC genie selected in the bios. Without reformatting my drive I started to have a hang on "windows is starting". If I rebooted and ran a repair it would usually work, but the next time I reboot I had to run the repair again. Sometimes I get this error, sometimes I do not. I decided to reformat and do a clean install. I am still getting the hangs.
Specs:
Mobo:             MSI Gaming z87 GD65 (updated to 1.2 bios)
Processor:      i7 - 4770k w/ H50 water cooler
SSD:               512 GB vertex 4
Video Card:    2x GTX 780 acx cooler evga SC
Power supply:Corsair 850 TX Bronze
Ram:              16gb (4x4) Corsair Vengeance 1600
Internet:        AC66 internet adapter
Mouse/Keyboard: Roccat Kone/Isku
O/S: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
Old build was
Processor:   i7-2600k
Mobo:          Gigabyte GA-Z68A-D3H-B3
Video Card: 1x GTX 780 acx cooler evga SC
Everything else was the same parts
Here is what I have tried.
1. Updated BIOS
2. Reformat/fresh install with USB iso downloaded online. (3-4 times)
3. Startup repair/restore system image (sometimes works, sometimes doesn't.)
4. Re-seated Memory
5. Tried a 120gb Intel SSD (520)
Possibilities?
1. Power supply is having issues? Is 850 too small? I read another article where some people replaced the PSU and it fixed their issue. This power supply worked with my old mobo/i7-2600k, so I don't think this is the issue, but it could since the 780s are overclocked and the processor is overclocked to 4.0 with the OC genie.
2. Windows update? After my fresh install, I usually didn't have any problems until I installed windows updates, BUT, I only updated a few and restarted a few times to make sure it worked. I installed the updates and it worked fine for a few reboots, then this morning I checked and it's hanging again. This also wouldn't explain why it was working before I put the new mobo in, as it was up to date.
Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm pretty tech savvy and I don't normally ask for help on forums, but this issue has become out of my hands. Thanks in advance.

I've heard some people replace the power supply. I use the Corsair TX 850. I don't mind buying a new one, but I don't want to waste time if it's not going to fix anything.
Is the PSU on the Corsair Website's Z87 compatibility list? I'm using a Corsair AX850W currently with the Z87 MPower Max, all seems to be ok after a bit of an OS loading debacle was overcome.
Why the graphics cards manufacturers didn't use a VBIOS that works for both Legacy and UEFI (GOP) I'll never understand!
Maybe for testing, try using a regular 'spinner' HDD with the OS on it?

  • Z68-GD65 Hangs on Starting Windows because of USB Controller. Any fixes?

Issue: During Windows 7 (32 bit & 64 bit) installation and startup, the computer hangs at "Starting Windows". It will display a pixel or two of the first red part of the logo animation and then stop.
    System Setup/Hardware:
    Mobo - Z68-GD65
    RAM - Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB)
    HDD - Corsair Force 3 60GB SSD
    CPU - Intel i5-2400 (Sandybridge)
PSU - Antec Earth Watts 650W
GPU - Asus Geforce GTX 560 Ti
Cause: I found that when I disabled the USB Controller completely from the BIOS, everything worked smoothly (install & startup). If I left the USB Controller enabled and just disabled the Legacy Controller, I would be left with a blinking DOS cursor after POST.
This is an issue because both keyboard and mouse are USB. I had to borrow an old PS/2 mouse to even install windows.
    Troubleshooting tried:
    - Tried disabling EVERY (and yes, I mean every, I've rebooted this thing 50+ times [stopped keeping track]) setting that can possible be disabled individually
    - Tried unplugged every component except: board, hdd and dvdrom
    - Tried swapping RAM
    - Tried swapping HDDs (to Sata non SSD)
    - Tried swapping PSUs
    - Tried changing Windows 7 install discs (one 32 bit, one 64 bit)
    - Tried removing all motherboard connections (FP audio, FP usb, etc, everything but 24+8pin power)
    - Tried clearing CMOS and resetting BIOS
    - Tried enabling USB Controller via ClickOnce BIOS and restarting
    - Tried fully updating Windows 7 and all drivers (video, mobo, etc)
    - Tried updating BIOS with Live 5
    - Tried leaving only USB 3.0 Controller enabled and plugging mouse/keyboard into those ports (blue on back)
    - Tried Windows repair
    - Tried Windows boot logging (got to file CLASSPNP.sys)
    - Tried booting to Safe Mode
    - Tried banging head on wall  (this was successful in giving me a headache, but not booting the computer)
I mainly list the troubleshooting above to convey the amount of frustration I've had with this board.
The USB Controller simply seems bad or the driver (or the way the board interacts/loads the Windows driver) is bad. I must have USB on my computer.
If I need to RMA, please let me know, however, I would hope there is a solution out there to fix the USB Controller issue. The RMA deadline is the 20th, I hope I can get an answer one way or the other before this as if there is no answer, I will be forced to RMA and go with another product from a different manufacturer (I really wanted to get over my "Asus only" attitude and try you MSI! I've been impressed up until this point, please don't let me down).
    Please help?
-Frazzled not tech illiterate personal system builder.

    phasedone,
I was having the exact same issue with a new build (Mobo MSI Z68-GD65-G3).  I had been banging my head against the wall for a while and then I came across your post.  Subsequently, I disabled the USB controller in BIOS and my Win 7 install ran fine (minus the fact that I had no access to my USB keyboard and mouse).   I set the BIOS back to default settings which re-enabled the USB controller, and thus was able to re-plug the mouse and keyboard in after the windows loading screen, where the 4 colored orbs come together to make the Windows flag.  This seemed to do the trick.
Now the problem is, everytime the computer restarts (i.e. for any Windows updates), it freezes at the same point it would during the installation.  This is again assuming the mouse and keyboard are still plugged into the rear panel USB ports.  Which of course they're going to be!
Anyone with a recommendation as to how to fix this?  Is this a hardware defect or can it be solved with some sort of driver or firmware update?  I'm at a loss... but I certainly shouldn't have to unplug all USBs before starting the computer, that's just nuts.
I'm considering RMA as well, but would like to see if any MSI staff members or forum members might be able to share their insight.

  • Windows 7 Install Hangs at "Starting Windows" Screen

Having problems installing Windows 7 Home Premium from DVD on a newly built computer. When I run the Windows 7 Home Premium disc I get past "windows is loading files..." and then freeze on "starting windows" just after I see 4 little colored balls in the center of the screen.
    Here's what I've got:
    Monitor: Samsung T260HD 25.5in Rose/Black LCD w/ATSC
    HDD: 2 x Seagate 1.5TB Serial ATA HD 7200/32MB/SATA-3G
    Memory: Corsair Dominator 6144MB PC12800 DDR3 1600MHz (3x2)
    DVD: LG 22X DVDRW SATA
Motherboard: ASUS P6TD Deluxe Intel X58 Socket LGA1366 MB
Power Supply: Corsair 950w 80 Plus Power Supply
GPU: 5850 is backordered, so am using an old Nvidia (6400 GT?) to attempt to install Windows
    OS: Windows 7 Home Premium
I've done lots of research and tried:
    1. Using a PS2 keyboard/mouse
    2. Disabling USB in bios
    3. Disabling just about everything else in bios
    4. Tried w/ 2MB, 4MB and 6MB ram
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!

    Hi Stentorian,
It seems that you have not ever tried installing other systems like Windows XP and etc on your new built computer. It is difficult for us to determine if the computer actually works.
In addition, since the installation process has not even passed first stage to copy the installation files to the memory. The issue is likely to be caused by incompatible hardware such as the incompatible motherboarad, RAM and etc. Therefore, it is strongly recommended contacting with the hardware manufacture or the retailer to help you check the issue cause you may spend too much time on testing the issue by yourself.
Or you can also try installing Windows 7 on one hard drive and plug in one memory card (2MB, 4MB and 6MB respectively) to check if it works.
NOTE: During the installation, please unplug all the unnecessary hardware devices to avoid any conflicts.
    Judy :)

  • Windows 7 clean install hangs at starting windows

    Hello
I have HP pavilion p6-2462eo with preinstalled windows 8 and I’m trying to install windows 7 from a disc.
I get stuck on the "Starting windows" screen.
I have disabled the secure boot in bios and changed all settings that i can think in bios but is the same problem.
I have also booted from an external dvd drive but is the same problem.
I wont to replace windows 8 completely and not to make dual boot.
    Anyone have some ideas?

  • Refuse to load new home page at start (Window 7)

After the recent updates, the browser refuses to load a new home page at start. It "remembers" the old address, always. Probably it has not altered the registration line after the change even though it appears to have at that session. Therefore, when open again, it reverts back to the old home page address. Cheers.

    Hi yuenct,
You should take a look at the Knowledge Base article [[How to set the home page]].
There are steps in that article to reset your homepage preferences to default. I would try that first to clear out any strangeness. If that works, you can try setting your homepage again to your personal preference.
If that doesn't work you should look at the article [[Preferences are not saved]].
    Hopefully this helps!

  • Frozen on "setup is starting windows" blue screen tried everything...

Hi, I have tried the bootcamp section but no reply so far. My situation is this - I have an intel imac running 10.4.9, boot camp/XP SP2... everything was running fine. I went away for a week... to my knowledge no one used my computer. I came back and ran os x, everything was fine... I rebooted into windows, black screen, no sign of windows at all... only the standard detection of hardware etc as usual but no windows. Rebooted, same again. Repeat 10 times, same every time. Tried safe mode, everything... never got any further. Booted into os x, fine... tried again in windows... nothing. Decided to format, removed the windows partition, started boot camp process from scratch... got up to the "setup is starting windows" part (after all files have been loaded from the xp cd to prepare for setup) - froze. Rebooted, tried again - froze at same point. Left it for an hour... no change. Have tried formatting completely, zeroing over entire HD, burned multiple fresh copies of windows... re-slipstreamed... never gets any further. Hardware testing using os x cd comes up clean...i have latest firmware... latest security upgrade from apple...tried with all peripherals unplugged... same same same.
At this point I'm thinking something to do with firmware maybe...since that is the only thing I have been unable to change. Im stumped. Have looked all over the discussion pages and none of the solutions people have been given have worked for me.
Any help would be so very much appreciated.
    Thanks

    SOLVED
Well, I'd like to thank all of you for your input. After much prayer and extensive search, I was finally able to install Windows XP SP3 on the new iMac. I kept the 32GB partition created by Boot Camp 2.0, but I did 2 things differently when trying to do it this time. The apple keyboard (since it is so short, really Apple, you had a usable length with the Pro models 10 years ago) was connected to a 6 foot USB extension cable to reach the back of the monitor. This is because the iMac is on a computer desk with a pull-out desk to place the keyboard and mouse. But I disconnected the extension, and plugged it direct this time. I didn't leave the Windows XP SP3 disc in this time, I just restarted, and while it restarted I pressed and held the OPTION key. An icon of just the "Macintosh HD" came up on the screen, at which time I inserted the Windows CD, a few seconds later, an icon for the CD appeared to the right of the Mac HD icon. I selected the CD, and again it went through loading drivers getting ready for windows setup, same as before. I cried out to the Lord, and YESSSSSSSSS, it finally asked me if I wanted to format a windows partition! Needless to say, it went through the entire process fine.
I didn't need to update to Boot Camp 2.1, sp3 is working fine. Installed and ran a few programs, connected to the internet, and so forth. Although I left the network connection to the internet disabled, don't want to use the Windows side for the net, too many virus problems possible.
I shut down the computer, re-connected the USB extension cable, and when I went into the Windows side, guess what? The mouse and keyboard locked up completely. I connected the apple keyboard direct again, and then I had control again. Using the USB extension cable on the Windows side is the only problem, because the Mac side works fine with it. This will be a new post because I really need the extra length because of the distance. But thanks to all.

  • New Build hangs at VERIFYING DMI POOL DATA

I put it all together and try to load the XP OS, but it hangs at Verifying DMI Pool Data.......(NTLDR is missing)
Have rechecked the cables and connections a half dozen times. (All new cables)
Checked and rechecked the boot order.
    Disconnected the floppy.
I tried swapping to another HDD with a SATA, but I don't see it recognized during post, and I still get error message.
I put in an XP ms-dos starup floppy and it says update success, but won't system file transfer and goes back to the original error message.
    What's up here?
I little surfing lead me to this link       http://www.duxcw.com/faq/computer/dmi.html
which says a possible cure might be clearing the CMOS.
I supposed that's done by changing the jumpers right?
But, I have searched this website and can't find any Bios downloads for the K8N Neo2.
If I clear the CMOS I'll need to DL BIOS again right?
I am sure the original V1.A is outdated anyway.
Suggestions? I don't want to go rooting around and changing things and make this worse.
This is my 2nd build and the 1st wasn't easy either.

yes just BOOT from CD and reinstall XP... better reformat partition which contains XP. if you have important things on this partition not only OS move it to secondary partition or to other HDD.

  • New Build ... Windows Update Never Shows Updates. Checking for Updates just goes round and round

I've got a brand new installation of Server 2008 Standard, full with GUI and I've setup the server with a public IP so I can get to the internet.  Even tested getting to Dell Support website.
But when checking for updates the "Checking for updates" just goes round and round.  It never stops and shows me what updates are available.
I'm trying to create an image of this build for testing purposes.
I ran into the same issue when I was doing a VM test and only had a private IP.  I thought I wasn't able to get to Windows Update using our internal proxy with the private IP.  But now there seems to be more of an issue.
I've already setup the Windows Update service the same way we have for 2003 and 2008 ... Automatic and started.
    Any suggestions?

  • X201 - upgrading to 8GB of ram - Starting windows hangs

I just bought a used X201 (non tablet).  It came with 4GB of RAM (2x2GB).  I loaded windows 7 pro 64bit on a new Solid state drive and the little laptop worked great.  I work for a company that recently purchased dozens of new X230's and T430 laptops.  When they purchased these new machines, they upgraded all the memory to 16GB...which means the vendor removed the original 2x4GB modules to put in 2x8GB.  So, I have a drawer FULL of brand new 4GB memory modules (dozens of them).  I figured I would try and upgrade this X201 I just bought to 8GB of ram since I had so many 4GB stick laying around not being used.  When I put in two of the 4GB sticks, the laptop hangs at "Starting Windows", but it passes all BIOS tests just fine and does appear to at least start windows.  With only ONE 4GB stick, the computer boots just fine.  With one 4GB and one 2GB (total of 6GB) the computer boots just fine.  I've tried a bunch of different 4GB sticks to make sure one wasn't bad, but these are all brand new and there is no way I have that many bad sticks (plus, they all work fine when they are by themselves).  Everything i've read says that these X201's will take a max of 8GB, but I just can't get this laptop to work with two 4GB sticks.  One difference is, the new 4GB sticks are PC3-12800 modules, where as the original 2GB that came with this X201 are PC3-10600.  However, when used in tandem, they work fine (one 4GB and one 2GB).  I should have put in the 8GB of ram before I loaded Windows, but I've done a lot of install work and hate to reload windows at this point...and I am not sure that would even work.  Has this happened to anyone else?

I would be also interested in the cause since I've also seen this behaviour. I tried the 2x 4GB Crucial shown below in my X201, two X301 and the T520 and didn't work either:
DDR-10600 worked with no problems in all aforementioned machines.

  • M83 halt at starting windows -boot issue

    Hi all,
We have an issue with some machines but not all when we install new M83 desktops. When booting the machines they stop booting at the "Starting Windows" splash screen. We have found that sometimes updating the display adpater driver resolves the issue or even the monitor driver (which is plug and play anyway). I have even once changed the BIOS video setup to the on board graphics from Automatic which worked.
We have also have the keyboard plugged into certain USB ports affects the boot up. Its a problem I am trying to find out the cause.
When we install the machine on site everything is working fine. The following day(s) the user will make contact to say there is a problem. The machines are built before we take to site so all is working and while the engineer is on site but it seems something is updating afterwards when the engineer leaves site.
I have a machine where I have yet to resolve this problem and also have more of the same issues from other mahcines we install.
If anyone has come across this issue or can offer advise I would be most grateful.

  • Firefox hangs at start. A new profile with a copy of my bookmarks and other files, from previous profile starts OK. At next start I have to setup a new profile. Since June 2010 in Ubuntu, with automatic update.

    Hi,
My firefox-profiles in Ubuntu, are practically one-timers.
Next time i want to use firefox it hangs at start. The window comes up
and it's white, except for a square in upper left corner (without color).
I'm having this problem since June 2010, when I started using an electronic ID,
for access to Swedish goverment organisations. The Electronic ID (BnakID) is
supported in Windows, Mac and Ubuntu. I had a new installation of Ubuntu, in a
    virtual machine at that time.
I can't say that this is a problem with Firefox in Ubuntu or some other
combination, I'm a newbie with Ubuntu and BankID.
I've used been using Firefox and installing (Firebird, Mozilla) since 2001,
in other OS:es than Ubuntu (Solaris, RedHat, Windows and SLED).
    My workaround are:
    - cd ~/.mozilla/firefox
    - mv profiles.ini profiles.ini-
    - Start and stop firefox
    - Copy some files from previous profile, to the new.
    cd <previous>.default
    cp -r bookmark* cert8.db content-prefs.sqlite cookies.sqlite* \
    extensions* places.sqlite* prefs.js sessionstore.* signons.sqlite* \
    ../<new>.default/
    - Start firefox
    My environment:
    Linux uw000141 2.6.32-26-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Wed Nov 24 09:00:03 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
    Mozilla Firefox 3.6.13, Copyright (c) 1998 - 2010 mozilla.org

Try the fix posted by houseboats in this discussion: spinning beachball suddenly every time at launch. Other users have reported that it fixed their problem which is similar to yours, good with airport off, freeze with airport on.
The only problem I had with the fix was that it killed the name I gave my computer in the System/Sharing preference pane.  So if you use it go to that pane and rename your computer as it was originally.

  • Failed to Install The New Preview Build. Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80246007: FBL_AWESOME1501 9926 Professional.

    Hello,
I'm having issues upgrading my Windows 10 Technical Preview installation build 9879 to a newer build that's become available late January 23rd.
I am installing the new upgrade in a Hyper-V virtual machine and get the following error:
Failed to install the new preview build, please try again later. 0x80246007
    What could be the problem?
Previously I've had messages that Windows cannot be upgraded on a computer with less than 2 Gbyte of RAM. That's a Hyper-V VM with dynamic memory and I was highly surprised to see this error; never had this before. Had to set 2048 Mbytes as a minimum memory
for this VM. Now that I have this 80246007 error code.
When looking up System log, the following error messages are listed multiple times:
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80246007: FBL_AWESOME1501 9926 Professional.
The errors are returned for the Event ID 20 by WindowsUpdateClient
in task category Windows Update Agent..
    I reviewed the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost\Applicability
registry key as suggested in Windows
Insider stuck on build 9841 - "No new preview build was found", and here is what it shows:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost\Applicability]
    "BranchName"="fbl_awesome1501"
    "ThresholdRiskLevel"="low"
    "ThresholdOptedin"=dword:00000001
Note, when attempting to install the downloaded update from a native boot, installation starts with no errors.
However, since setup is not supported for a natively booted VHD files, it does not proceed further showing a message that installation on virtual drives is not supported.
Looks like Setup is having problems installing in a Hyper-V virtual machine.
Possibly, some ESD files got corrupted during downloading? Is it possible to remove them and re-download missing files? (I, however, noticed that Windows seems to re-download upgrade files after you restart 9879 and attempt to check for a new build.
Any clue why installing under VM causes 9926 to fail?
    Thank you in advance.
Well this is the world we live in And these are the hands we're given...

    Hi,
According to the error message, this problem seems like update package installation failed during system upgrade.
You can try to remove ESD file which locate at boot of C drive and upgrade the system again for test.
On the other hand, make sure the system 9879 installed all Windows pushed updates before system upgrade.
