Alpha numeric page numbers

I would like to number pages using letters and numbers. When I put a number in for section and a letter in for sub-section, I get a message that the sub-section has to be a number. I have tried different variations with volume, chapter, section...ect.
I have several sections within this section, each of them is a different letter or combination of letters. See below.
3V-1
3P-1
3S-1
3SCR-1
3PM-1
3Accord
This will eventually be a very large book with many tabs. I want to get the numbering straight before I go to far.
Thanks for all help!
Ohhh...and by the way..I know I could type them in on the master pages, but I want them to show up in the TOC. I think I know how to do that if I can get the combination of letters and numbers using variables for section, chapter...ect.
ls

Thanks Michael. I have another question though. I have
gotten my toc to work in another book by clicking off the "update
numbering" when creating it. It kept changing it back to 1.
I guess if I use Chapter instead of Section, doing it the way you said, I might not have to click the update
numbering button to off. I had tried your suggestion before, but I am using Section
and not Chapter. Why is Section grayed out when you right click
on the document in the tree and select Numbering, and it is available
within the document in the document numbering properties window?

  • Re-write numerical page numbers to roman numerals for an introduction?

    Hi there everybody,
I've been attempting (for some considerable time!) to typeset and format a book. The book needs to have roman numerals running from the first title page (which is in reality left blank through using a secondary master page without page numbers). However, I didn't realise I would need to use roman numerals in the introduction, and instead started the page numbers from the first title page of the introduction. Therefore, my pages that are numbered by roman numerals (copyright page etc) stop at this point and in the introduction become numbers.
I need to change it so it is roman numerals up until the first page of the actual book, all through the introduction,  but when I try to change it in the Numbers and Sections tab, it tells me that i've already used the numbers i've typed in.
Basically I would like to know how to take off the first set of roman numeral page numbers and start again??
I'm very confused!! Help would be MUCH appreciated.

  • How to make the Internal numbering as Alpha-Numeric

    Hi,
In the Document Info Record, the Internal numbering is always numeric.
    How to make it Alpha-Numeric?
    Regards,
    Shashi

    Dear Shashidhar,
Number assignment is derived from Document Type of the DIR. You can customise the Document type settings (DC10) to make the number range as External or Mixed.
Modify the settings in "Number Assgmt" tab as 2 for only external number assignement and 3 for mixed number assignment.
    Hope this solves your question.

  • Alpha numeric numbering production orders

    Hi,
Do we need to have external numbering turned on to have alpha numeric numbers for production orders and planned orders ? By the way is external numbering allowed for planned orders ? If yes then how would MRP create planned orders if only external numbering is allowed ?
    Thanks

    Hi,
As per my thinking , you can try with following enhancement for getting alphanumeric numbering of production orders :
    PPCO0001  Application development: PP orders
You need to concetanate the fix part ( alphabetical) alongwith number range maintained for production orders.
Pls. take help of your abaper for the same.
You can implement above as Enhancement Project in Tcode : CMOD.
    Hope this helps.

  • Page Numbering, Arabic then Standard Numerical

    Hi Everyone,
I am using the most recent version of pages on LION. I know that there are a few related forums but mine is very specific. I need to begin my thesis with the first few pages (abstract, acknowledgements, table of contents) as Arabic, then I need to have a table of contents after the first few pages which not only includes the Arabic numbering of the abstract and acknowledgements, but also has the rest of my thesis in there which begins with the introductions (the page after my table of contents) which should begin at page 1.
To simplify, the first few pages need to be in Arabic, the next set of pages (about 50) need to be standard (1,2,3,4...50..).  Both the Arabic and standard numerical must both be listed in the table of contents which would technically be on pages 3 & 4 but should be visually listed as page iii & iv.
    Thank you!   Courtney
    EX:
    Abstract...i
    Acknowledgements....ii
    Table of Contents....iii & iv
    Intro.....1
    Lit Review....2
    Etc.....3-50.

You can always add any text but it will not be part of the automatic TOC. If you are going to print the document it will probably not matter.
The page numbers in the first part can't be in the footer as it will affect all pages in the document.
I presume you will print the document? If so I would create 2 documents, one with the first part an Roman numerals and one with the second part with the Arabic numerals.
Now you can create TOC with the preferred page numbers. When you are certain that you will not change anything in the documents create the TOCs. In the Roman select the TOC so it has a blue border line and one copy the TOC and open it in TextEdit.
Copy the TOC from TextEdit (it is now plain text and has lost its connection to the the in the document) and past it before the TOC in the Arabic page number document. Now you can also copy and paste the text from the Roman.. document. The other TOC will adjust its page numbers
You will probably need a Section breakBefore or after the main TOC so you can have the first part without page numbers. Familiarise your self with the Inspector palette > Layout  and download the Pages User Guide and read about page numbering, layout sections and TOCs. I find it hard do give precise instructions. The Pages User Guide is downloadable from your Pages Help menu.

  • Alpha Numeric - GL account numbering

    Hi
Our client is going for alpha numeric GL accounts. FS00 will allow creating alpha numeric GL accounts. But i wanted to what may be problem in future?
I want to know will any account determination settings like OBYC (FI - MM Settings), VKOA (FI - SD settings), AO90 - Asset accounting GL determination or any other FI process will give problem at the time of configurations or in future?.
Please help me on this. What can be the points on the basis of which i can tell client that they should go for NUMERIC GL accounts only and not Alpha Numeric.

  • Can changes be made to page numbers?

I have been using light room now for about a month and do think everything is getting easier.  I maintain my own website and use the web catalogs for preview photos of the auction every week.  I will frequently ad pages to the catalog every week.
On the bottom of the web page there are small page numbers plus previous and next.  These are showing up in a medium light gray I would like to make these numbers show up on each page either black or dark gray so they will show up.  Many people have complained that they can't see the numbers.
If you need to know what I am talking about you can look at the preview photos under weekly auction on my website. www.livingstonsauction.com
Any advise and step by step instructions on how to would be great.  Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Unable to replicate both Numeric and alpha numeric vendors records from R3

    Dear all,
In our ECC 5 environment, we have some vendors who master record numbers that are numeric internally assigned i.e 7000000 or 23000000 and some alphanumeric externally assigned i.e SmallBusiness1 or Grinad10. This is posible as you may know via vendor account groups.
We have implemented a classic scenario in SRM 4, Server 5 environment, therefore we need to replicate ECC backend vendors masters. We initally set SAP's AB business Partner (vendors) number range in SRM to A  - zzzzzzzz and created numeric number ranges to match thoes set up for all our vendors in ECC.
When we ran BBPGETVD only the alpha numeric vendors records replicated down to SRM. The numeric were ingnored. The BBPGETVD t-code was reporting that the other vendors had incorrect data.
We then chnaged the AB Business Partner (vendor)number range to 000000001 - 999999999 and ran BBPGETVD. Only then did the numeric vendors get replicated down to SRM. But the issue is now, I cannot replicate the alpha numeric with out chaanging the number range back to A - zzzzzzzzz.
    Question,
How can I set the Business Partner(Vendor) number range in SRM to anable the replication of both Numeric and Alpha numeric assigned vendor records down to SRM.
    Thanks,
    Grace

    Christophe,
PLEASE HELP I HAVE AN URGENT ISSUE NOW!!!
On the subject of setting back the internal BP number range, does SRM expect it to be set for example to:
    01  0000000001 - 0000999999?
Should the grouping for this internal number range be also ways set to 0001. Iam refernceing the settings in our sandbox client, they seam to be set up that way.
If its set to say 0003, will this cause a problem?
Because we have set all our BP ranges to external, any ORG unit, USER or position that we created after we "removed" the internal number range does appear to be working.
I have noticed this. when I login as a new user and try to create a shopping cart, tthe product category drop down does not work on the "new user".
If I go in the BP transaction and search for this new user or new unit org units that where created after the removal of the internal number range nothing is found!. The last internal BP number is 105.
    Question.
If I set the internal number range back to
01 0000000001 - 0000099999 and set the current number to 106, then delete and recreate the org units, do you think this will work?
Please help I need to get this issue sorted out because as you said no new org unit/user can be setup.
    Thanks Again.
    Grace

  • Validation on alpha numeric

    Hi all,
Can anyone help me getting validation on not allowing special character on field. I need just alpha numeric to be entered in the field. I have a field with datatype varchar2, which is allowing user to add special chars also. Please let me know the validation which i can apply on that item to restrict user to not add special chars. Seek help. thanks in advance
    regards

    Hi
you can use javascript for this, use this function and change the ascii values according to your need
    function number_chk(e) {     //only numbers
    var k;
    document.all ? k = e.keyCode : k = e.which;
    return ((k > 47 && k < 58) || (k < 96 && k > 123) || k == 8);
This function is allowing only the Numbers to be entered in the field.
Call this function from your textfield's HTML form element attributes like this:
    onkeypress = "return number_chk(event)"

  • Please help with page numbering!

Right, so I'm writing my thesis and need to insert different types of page numbering (note: I'm using Pages '09 4.3)
I've split the document up by inserting sections:
Section 1: Glossary of Abbreviations, List of Figures. These must be numbered, but on a Roman numeral system. This section begins on page 4, but page 4 should actually read page 'i', page 5 'ii', page 6 'iii', and so on.
Section 2: Main body of text. This must also be numbered, but using Arabic numbers. This section begins on Page 8, but I want page 8 to read page '1', if you see what I mean.
My problem: while I've succeeded in inserting  Arabic numbering at Section 2, I cannot do the same for Section 1. Each time I try to insert the Roman numerals using 'Insert > Auto Page Numbers...' it just numbers the WHOLE document that way! I can't manually type in the numeral at the footer of each page either, because when you change one footer it changes all the footers within a section!
I've gone on every forum, tried everything I've read, but it STILL WON'T cooperate. This should be the easiest thing in the world but I can't seem to do it! I'm going insane. I beg you, if I can't solve this soon I'll overheat and throw this stupid computer out of the window. Please, PLEASE help!

I tidied all that up and added it to the iWorkTipsnTricks forum.

  • Non-English page numbers/lists

    Hello.
I have ID CS4. I am working on a doc that needs non-English (Latin) numbers as the page numbers. The doc has about 2,500 pages, and I do not want to do this manually. I have looked all over the place for a solution and have found nothing even romotely close. Anyone have an idea how to do this? Thanks.
    Adam

Well, when I've needed to do page numbering using Khmer numerals, or Burmese, or Lao, or etc., I have only used workarounds. (One of 'em is actually a workaround I originally learned from Peter that he mentioned, which I will describe in a bit more detail) They're all bad. A script might be a better idea, but I suggest that you submit a feature request, as will I, because I'm hoping for decent international support by CS8 or so.
    1) Use a bad font! You know, like Limon, or some other font that has Khmer numerals mapped onto the Arabic numeral codepoints. That way you can use a page number placeholder on the master page.
    2) Your number-list idea is a good one, but InDesign can't just use your number list. What I did was this:
       a) Make a list of 300 Burmese numbers in raw text
       b) Set up the margins so that the "main text area" was where I wanted my page numbers
       c) Make sure that Layout -> Layout Adjustment is off (this is necessary for step e. below)
       d) Place the number text file, holding down shift so it auto-flows
       e) Change your margins back to your desired settings - the number-containing text boxes should remain where they are
    3) Edit a font to put your preferred numeral system. Ugh. I did this for a client, once, in 2007, and I still feel dirty.
    4) Feature request to Harbs for more numbering options in World Tools - I haven't tried this one yet but I bet it's your only chance to get Khmer numbering before CS8.
Proof that no. 3 must be doable in one way or another... here's English ID's options in numbering formats:
    and in World Tools (CS4)
... so it must be possible. I have found Adobe to be about as responsive as a hunk of marble when asking for properly-implemented multilingual support. Asking Harbs if the numeral options in World Tools can be expanded to include SE Asian script(s) might be your best bet.
As a side note: I know that it's useless, but I can't stop telling people what number systems are actually called.
    1 2 3 4 5: Arabic numerals
    ١ ٢ ٣ ٤ ٥: Hindi numerals
I II III IV V: Roman numerals
sorry, I'll get off my soapbox now.

  • Continue page numbering from Main Section to Trailer Section

    Hello,
I am trying to create a report which has multiple report blocks in the Main section. The page orientation is portrait for Main section. Now, I want to add a report block which should have a landscape orientation. So, I created this in the Trailer section. All that works out well.
My next task is to add a Table of Contents as the first page of the output (pdf). This is clearly documented in the Building Reports 10g manual and works just fine for the Main section. i.e. the TOC comes out with correct page numbers. But, for the Trailer section, the page number retrieved by SRW.GET_PAGE_NUM shows a page number of 1 , since it's the first page in the Trailer.
What I want is that the Trailer's page number should continue where the Main section left off. In fact, If I put a field in the margin for the trailer and source it from "Page Number" in the property pallet, I can see that it has the correct page number, i.e. it's main sections page number + 1. But, SRW.GET_PAGE_NUM seems to retrieve 1.
Note that at the Report Module level, I have set the Format Order of Sections property to Main-Trailer-Header.
    Any inputs are much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Manish

That worked perfectly after I discovered I also needed to uncheck "use previous footnote". I also checked "First page is different" since it is a Section Title Page and did not need a page number. Now, all that is needed is the availability of different types/styles of numbering (Roman numeral for introductory pages as an example).
What is happening is that I am self publishing a genealogical book on my family tree that also carries quite a lot of other family information and each of the "Sections" was built in Pages since I did not know how to correctly do sectioning to use a single Page document. There are eight SECTIONS, not pages, with a total 278 duplex (2 sided) pages.
Thanks Yvan for helping clarify the sectioning.

  • What is faster to search an alpha numeric primary key or number datatype

    hi all,
I am looking for the answer to a question. What provides a faster and or efficient search for a primary key in any RDBMS is it alpha numeric or number? and why?I would appreciate you replies please.

Several years ago an Oracle support analyst posted the results of a test for a single column PK with where he compared the results for using a number data type verse a character data type. The analyst results showed you needed more than 100K accesses to measure any significant difference where the number data type showed a small performance advantage. Note that Oracle stores the number data type internally as a form of scientific notation and library math is necessary to work with the numbers. Most of the claims for using a number instead of character go back to the days where native binary words were used as the key. The test only covered signle column keys.
Use the data type that matches your natural business keys and call it a day. If you try to substitute an artificial numeric key you are likely to have to go through a business character value to locate the artificial key so any performance benefit you think you can get by using a numeric key will be imaginary due to increased overhead of maintaining multiple indexes.
You can set up and run your own tests.
