Alphabet Soup

I just bought a flat panel monitor. It has two connection ports. VGA and DVI-D. Yippee, I think. I won't need the video switcher I bought that hasn't arrived yet. (To switch between a really old WinXP desktop and the Macbook when I want to use an external monitor.)
I already have the Apple connection Mini DVI to VGA, and I've spent a couple of hours trying to find a DVI-D to VGA converter and I finally hit this page http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9321G/B#overview and thought +Once again I am years behind comprehending what the Macbook is capable of+.
Mac Forum Users, please rescue me again. Is this what I need -- Apple's Mini DVI to DVI adapter and a male to male DVI-D cable?
Thanks for any help.

Hi cmw951,
Mac Forum Users, please rescue me again. Is this what I need -- Apple's Mini DVI to DVI adapter and a male to male DVI-D cable?
Yep, that's exactly what you need.
Thanks for any help.
You're welcome anytime.

  • Text Field Alphabet Soup crashes Safari 3.0.4 - How to fix?

    Like many others, I have installed the 10.4.11 bundle update and am having problems with Safari. My problems occur when I try to type anything into a text field. If I type something that starts with the same characters I have used before, the field fills in automatically and backspacing makes a mess of it. If I use the spacebar, the page scrolls down. If I backspace, the text I type sometimes appears in reverse order. Other garbling of typed text occurs that I cannot fully describe, but in all cases Safari grinds to a halt. I have reinstalled Safari with Pacifist. I have scoured my hard drive for Input Managers and found none. I have deleted Cookies.plist. None of these fixes has worked for me. Anybody have ideas for a fix? Here is a recent crash report:

  • How to access JDBC Resource registered in Sun Java System App Server ?

    I want to create a stand-alone JDBC application with Java SE using Swing technologies and JNDI technology. The purpose of using JNDI technology is to avoid change of Java Source Code every time I move the database to different location. This Java application will be used in a standalone PC installed with Windows XP Professional with no LAN / WAN connection. Of course, Internet connection is available with the PC.
    I use JavaDB to store the data tables and the location of the database is D:\E-DRIVE\SAPDEV. Tomorrow, if I move this database to C:\SAPDEV or any network drive, I do not want to change the Java Source code. I want to use JNDI which, if I am not wrong, helps developers to avoid manual change of Java source code whenever the database location is changed. Changes have to be made only in the JNDI Name which contains all relevant information about the database in order to get connection no matter where the database SAPDEV is stored; it can be placed under D:\E-DRIVE directory or C:\ directory of the hard disk. To implement my intention, I started developing Java application as per the steps mentioned below:
    Step 1:
    To proceed, first, I sought the help of Sun Java System Application Server Admin Console. I created JNDI object for Connection Pool using the menu path Common Tasks->Resources->JDBC->Connection Pools.
    JNDI Name : ABAPRPY
    Resource Type : javax.sql.DataSource
    Datasource class : org.apache.derby.jdbc.ClientDataSource
    Description : ABAP Program Repository
    The Connection Pool creation has options for General, Advanced and Additional Settings tabs and I made all the settings relevant to the database I created in D:\E-DRIVE\SAPDEV.
    To confirm whether the above settings are correct, I pressed the Ping push button which is available in the General tab of the connection pool creation screen. The system responded with the message Ping Succeeded.
    Step 2:
    I created a JDBC Resource using the menu path Common Tasks->Resources->JDBC->JDBC Resources.
    JNDI Name : jdbc/SAPDEV
    Pool Name : ABAPRPY
    Description : Database Connection for SAPDEV database
    Status : Enabled
    I can see all the above settings recorded in the domain.xml which is placed in the folder
    C:\Sun\AppServer\domains\domain1\config
    Step 3:
    I have made sure that Sun Java System Application Server is up and running in the background with JavaDB server. I created a Java Program making sure the following JAR files are included in the classpath:
    appserv-admin.jar
    appserv-ee.jar
    appserv-rt.jar
    javaee.jar
    fscontext.jar
    Plus, the lib directory of JDK 1.6 & C:\Sun\AppServer\domains\domain1\config
    Source code of the program is as follows: I used NetBeans IDE to create my project file.
    import java.util.logging.Level;
    import java.util.logging.Logger;
    import javax.naming.*;
    import javax.activation.DataSource;
    public class JNDILookup {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    try {
    InitialContext initCtx = new InitialContext();
    DataSource ds = (DataSource) initCtx.lookup("java:comp/env/jdbc/sapdev>");
    } catch (NamingException ex) {
    Logger.getLogger(JNDILookup.class.getName()).log(Level.SEVERE, null, ex);
    When I attempted to compile the above program in NetBeans IDE ,no compilation error reported. But while executing the program, I got the following run-time error message:
    SEVERE: null
    javax.naming.NameNotFoundException: No object bound for java:comp/env/jdbc/sapdev> [Root exception is java.lang.NullPointerException]
    at com.sun.enterprise.naming.java.javaURLContext.lookup(javaURLContext.java:224)
    at com.sun.enterprise.naming.SerialContext.lookup(SerialContext.java:396)
    at javax.naming.InitialContext.lookup(InitialContext.java:392)
    at SAPConnect.JNDILookup.main(JNDILookup.java:21)
    Caused by: java.lang.NullPointerException
    at com.sun.enterprise.naming.java.javaURLContext.lookup(javaURLContext.java:173)
    ... 3 more
    Now, I want to come out of this situation; at the same time, I want to preserve the settings I have made in the Sun Java System Application Server Admin Console. That is, I want to programmatically access the data source using Connection Pool created in Sun Java System Application Server Admin Console.
    I request dear forum members to provide me an appropriate solution.
    Thanks and regards,
    K. Rangarajan.

    Bare in mind I am attempting the context.lookup() from inside the container (my code is in a session bean). I have accessed the server and have my bean "say hello" first to verify the bean works OK, then I call a method with this rather standard code:
    String jndiDataSourceName ="Second_EJB_Module_DataBase";
    Logger.getLogger(DynamicPU.class.getName()).log(Level.INFO,"Programatically acquiring JNDI DataDource: "+ jndiDataSourceName);
    InitialContext ctx;
    try {
    ctx = new InitialContext();
    ds =(DataSource)ctx.lookup("java:comp/env/jdbc/"+jndiDataSourceName);
    } catch (NamingException ex) {
    Logger.getLogger(DynamicPU.class.getName()).log(Level.SEVERE, null, ex);
    return "Exception generated trying to preform JDBC DataSource lookup. \n"+ex.toString();
    But when I run the code the server log shows the initial context is created Ok, but an exception is thrown becasue the resource name is not found:
    (and i have tried vriations of ctx.lookup("jdbc/"+jndiDataSourceName) etc etc
    You are fine here. It works in container because the InitialContext properties have been supplied already. That was the link I forwarded earlier. The InitialContext you create locally needs to locate the container JNDI. That is what the properties specify.
    Where I am confused is where you indicate the stack below is from the server log. So, you initiate a standalone (java main method) application, create an InitialContext, and you see the results in your app server log?
    LDR5010: All ejb(s) of [EJB_Module_1] loaded successfully!
    Programatically acquiring JNDI DataDource: Second_EJB_Module_DataBase
    The log message is null.
    javax.naming.NameNotFoundException: Second_EJB_Module_DataBase not found

    at com.sun.enterprise.naming.TransientContext.lookup(TransientContext.java:188)

    at com.sun.corba.ee.impl.orbutil.threadpool.ThreadPoolImpl$WorkerThread.run(ThreadPoolImpl.java:555)
    This is strange since I can see this resource (a JDBC connection named Second_EJB_Module_DataBase) is configured on the server from the server's admin console.
    That is why you can obtain a lookup from within the container (app server).
    For this lookup to work it may be that one must map the name inside an ejb-jar.xml deployed with the application, but I have also read some resources like jdbc connection should have a default name. Does anyone know if my lookup() should work without using an ejb-jar.xml mfile to explcitly map the reource for my application?
    Both EBJ's and data sources can be referenced via JNDI. It's a remote lookup (that is normally optimized if it is running in the same JVM). You should not have any dependencies on a JDBC data source being set-up on ejb-jar.xml. That file can of course impact your EJB's. However, data sources are normally set-up on a container-specific basis (e.g., you probably did it through a console, but there is a spec somewhere about how to set up a data source via a resource the app server looks for; it varies from app server to app server). However, once you have that container-specific data source set-up, JNDI operates vendor-neutral. You should be able to take the code above and move it to JBoss or Weblogic or Tomcat or whatever (this is an ideal, in practice, the vendors sometimes put a data source in a name you would not expect, but again, you can use their JMX console to see what the JNDI name is).
    (As I stated above if I have to use a deployment discriptor to get at this JNDI datasource, then solution is not "programmatic" as newly configured datasources could not be accessed without redeploying the entire application).
    As JSchell alluded to, you will always have at least something vendor-specific. JNDI itself (the code you wrote) is totally portable. However, you have to set the various JNDI environment properties to a given vendor's spec. Ideally, you should not need a vendor's actual InitialContext application, but it's a possibility. Once you can safely cast to Context, you should be vendor-neutral (if not, demand your money back).
    So that is exactly where I am stuck, trying to get the lookup to work and wondering if it should work without and xml file mapping the resource for my app.
    What we ended up doing for standalone was to provide our own JNDI. If you look at the open source project JOTM, there are examples on how to use that with XBean (if integrating with Spring, as we did), you can easily set up a data source that runs standalone exactly as you get in the container. Another benefit is you get full JTA/JTS support and the ability to run XA transactions. (This might all be alphabet soup, but the app server gives it to you, and this is the way we ended up doing the same: JNDI + JTA + JTS + XA). It ends up the same application code uses a "vanilla" InitialContext and all we have to do is write one or two xml files (one for our app server, a couple for JOTM), and our actual code works the same.
    I still think you have a shot at getting to the container's JNDI, just not using their full-blown app server JAR.
    I think there must be a simple way to do this with an ejb-jar.xml, I am no expert in JNDI, I could be missing something simple, I will keep at it and post an answer here if I come up with it.
    Thanks, jayIt is simple to code. Getting it to integrate with your app server, yes, that can be challenging. But it has nothing to do with EJB's. Write a simple test. Using nothing but DataSource and InitialContext. Let us know where you get stuck.

  • Microsoft Word problem with PDF Mac OS

    Using Word from Office 2011 under Snow Leopard, if I use the normal 'Print>Save as PDF' the resulting PDF makes my Acrobat Pro 9 hang and I have to force quit it. Saving the files a .doc format makes no difference. I did not have this problem with Office 2004 and Snow Leopard.
    If instead I open the resulting PDF in Preview and then run 'Print>Save as Adobe PDF' the file will work in Acrobat 9.
    Excel does produce a working PDF via the  'Print>Save as PDF' route as does Mail.
    Thanks in advance for any thoughts?

    I, too unexpectedly ran into this problem yesterday while doing my [usually] routine client billing. I have an invoice template in MS Word (now version 2011), and I create PDF copies and email them to my clients.
    I spent half the day yesterday trying to get to the bottom of this issue, and it was certainly comforting to see in the forum that at least a few other people are experiencing the same symptoms. I have now verified everything that others have reported in this thread:
    1. The problem occurs when saving a text document (MS Word 2011 or Apple Text Edit in Rich Text mode) to PDF using the PDF conversion tools in the Mac OS Print dialog (Save as PDF or Save as Adobe PDF).
    2. The problem only occurs when your document contains OpenType PostScript fonts (e.g Adobe's Myriad Pro, Minion Pro, etc.) The problem does not occur when you're document contains only Adobe PostScript Type 1 fonts, TrueType fonts, or OpenType True Type fonts from Microsoft (e.g. Calibri or Cambria)
    3. Apple's Preview application is impervious to this problem, but Adobe Acrobat 9 (Mac or PC) chokes on files generated this way.
    4. If you generate the PDF using the simple "Save as PDF" in the Mac OS Print dialog, the file will seemingly save ok, but Acrobat 9 will hang when it tries to open the file.
    5. If you generate the PDF using the "Save as Adobe PDF" option in the Mac OS Print dialog, the PDF exporter will hang, and the file will not get generated.
    6. If you generate the PDF by saving the PDF Preview from Word or by opening the "simply" generated PDF in Apple Preview and then re-save the PDF, Acrobat 9 will open the file but display alphabet soup wherever the OpenType PostScript font was used.
    7. For some reason, neither Excel and PowerPoint 2011 seem to exhibit this problem when using OpenType PostScript fonts and exporting to PDF from the Mac OS Print dialog.
    Now, here's the clincher: This problem DOES NOT OCCUR if your Mac is running the previous version of Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6.6).
    I purchased a new MacBook Pro laptop a couple months ago, and about two weeks ago, Apple pushed out what they called the Mac OS X 10.6.7 update for "early 2011 MacBookPro computers." Naturally, I installed the updgrade back then, and this is the first time I've exercised the PDF export from Word since then.
    I also have a MacPro tower, which is still running OS 10.6.6, and I can export PDF documents contaiing OpenType PostScript fonts with no problem in Acrobat from that machine.
    Bottom Line: Apple's latest Snow Leopard upgrade to OS 10.6.7 is causing this problem, but getting it fixed is going to require cooperation between Apple, Adobe and Microsoft...
    In the mean time, if you're using Apple's Time Machine and you want to revert your Mac OS to version 10.6.6, here's a link to an Apple Tech Note about how to do that: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15216.html
    I've contacted Tech Support at all three companies, and of course, each one thinks that it's the other comany's problem...but perhaps since this essentially an Adobe Acrobat issue, Adobe can take the lead in troubleshooting it.

  • Is is possible to read a file while writing the same file at time in java?

    Hi ,
    I am reading a MSAccess file (mdb) from one location to another location .but the source file is an online database which will chage regularly .so while reading that file i am getting error like
    FileNotFoundException.
    java.io.FileNotFoundException: c:\Msaccess\db2.mdb (The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another
    s)
    at java.io.FileInputStream.open(Native Method)
    at java.io.FileInputStream.<init>(FileInputStream.java:106)
    at read.main(read.java:16)

    alphabet soup,
    Yes, windows helpfully prevents two processes from accessing a file simultaneously. Operating Systems on the other hand uniformly support it.
    Which probably doesn't help you very much, as I imagine that you can't just up and change the source machine over to *nix, but there you have it.
    You'll just have to close the program which has the database open, copy the database, and restart the program which uses the database.

  • Recovering lost data

    This is likely a long shot, but please help if you can:
    I experienced problems where the lcd screen on my powerbook g4 turned into a photo negative looking image. I had the problem repaired through the Apple Store in my neighborhood. I just got it back and all prior info on the computer is gone. All docs, music, photos, etc. I know, I know, I should have paid the $ to back it up. Anyway, my question is: Is there any way to recover any or all of the lost info being that the OS was reinstalled? When I turned on the computer for the first time after getting it back from repair, it began as if it were new and off the shelf: It asked for my name, registration info, did the whole "Welcome to Apple" show. Should I spend the money on a third party software or is it all gone forever?
    I don't know if this will make a difference (or make any sense to anyone) but here is the list of repairs itemized on the AppleCare Service sheet that was done to my computer:
    ASSY TOP CASEPB12
    DA HGST MORAGA PLUS B 60GB HD
    FLEX CABLEHDD
    KEYBOARD ASSY
    PCBA MLB, 1.5GHZ 1.2V R1.6 PB1
    RESTORE:MAC OS
    PCBA MLB 1.5GHZ PB12
    PADTHRML CPU Q54
    CARD AIRPORT EXT 11 CHNLAMER

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
    This looks like, and I'm guessing on some of the alphabet soup... that they replaced the top case/display screen, hard drive, logic board, and keyboard, essentially building a new machine. The 'restore: mac os' reinforces that you have a new hard drive in there, and if that's the case, Apple kept your old hard drive as a trade-in.
    You should talk to the Apple store and ask them what 'da hgst moraga plus b 60gb hd' means - I think they'll tell you they installed a new hard drive. You should ask them if they did replace your hard drive, where did they transfer the existing data from your old drive to the new hard drive?

  • OID 10.1.4 / eBS 12.0.6 integration - provisioning profiles vanishing

    We have, after a bit of thrashing, managed to get our OID working with SSO on eBS (lots of alphabet soup there!). We're on OID 10.1.4 and eBS 12.0.6.
    We're seeing an issue where, periodically, the connection profiles in OID, under the provisioning profiles container, will vanish. This causes all users who have new eBS accounts to receive a blank screen after authenticating in SSO. This seems logical, since without the connection profiles, OID doesn't have access to eBS to update the USER_GUID in FND_USER.
    If we rerun deregistration and reregistration, the issue is fixed, but it's sort of a sledge hammer solution.
    Has anyone else seen this issue? Are there processes, like running Autoconfig or OPMN that could cause the profiles to vanish? How about a lock on the FND_USER table?

  • Name of movie format file for html5

    It's been a long time since I done this, but what is the name of the file format for video for HTML5? Also what is a easy format to do this?
    Thanks, Joe

    Hi Joe
    Sorry, but we need just a bit more information here.
    Do you have a Captivate project that will be used to create HTML 5 and you want to add a video to that project?
    Or do you want to simply export the Captivate project out as a video that might be played within an HTML 5 page?
    Unfortunately, when it comes to video, it's quite an "alphabet soup" or "word salad" of different things. There is no standard "format". What we have are a collection of "containers" with each container being capable of storing different kinds of video content inside. So you could have three different MP4 files and two may fail to play while one plays beautifully. It's all in the internal encoding of the video. Life with video is bizarre.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Several Iweb and godaddy questions.

    Hello Folks:
    Just to give you an idea of my proficiency with web design, I'm the equivalent of a student pilot who just soloed. Just enough knowledge to be dangerous and a threat to mankind. Here are my questions:
    1. How do I use text editor or word to modify my HTML? I can view the HTML of my site, copy and paste, but can't get it back into iweb as other than alphabet soup. I specifically want to change the email address. I wrote the site having my personal email address in my address book and can't change it to the business email address by just re-publishing with the change to my address book.
    2. I published to Godaddy and of course cant use the counter. I tried to follow the instructions after starting an account at Statcounter.com but don't know how to insert it then change it back to a web site. Same basic problem as the email.
    2.1 Why would Mac consider something as basic as a counter to be proprietary?
    3. Can't get the slideshow to work on Godaddy. It works fine on my computer. On Godaddy, the slide show bar at the very bottom does not publish. I get an enlarged photo with a border on only three sides, nothing at the bottom. I can also enlarge each photo one at a time with the same results.
    4. Is the Iweb loaded on my Mac a watered down version? Seems like a lot of features may be lacking, especially if you want to do a business website like mine. I love my Macs and don't want to have to switch to some windows program, but need more than I see on Iweb.
    My website is www.airlandandseaparts.com. I'm going to switch into windows hard drive now and see if the slideshow works.
    Thank you very much.
    Regards,
    Kevin

    to the business email address by just re-publishing
    with the change to my address book.
    You should be able to though... this is strange... Especially if you are publishing to a folder, then you should be able to re-upload the newly published files with the proper email address.
    2.1 Why would Mac consider something as basic as a
    counter to be proprietary?
    The resources for the counter are hosted by .Mac. They can't possibly account for every variable as far as available resources on other hosts. (php, etc - stuff I don't understand nor want/care to but thats what it is about probably)
    3. Can't get the slideshow to work on Godaddy. It

    Try re-uploading your slideshow_assets folder.
    I can also enlarge each photo
    one at a time with the same results.
    This is how the non-.Mac slideshow works.

  • ThorLabs ActiveX question

    I'm not very versed in ActiveX (or most others Microsoft alphabet soup techonologies de jour) and I'm a bit puzzled by the ActiveX interface that comes with a Thorlabs APT controller system.
    If I place an ActiveX container in the front panel, then inside it an object of a system provided type, MG17System, I can go to the block diagram and call methods on the reference that is there, e.g. the simple AboutBox method.  Using the help system the wire from the reference into the method call shows up as "MG17System  MG17SystemLib.MG17System".
    If instead I start with an AutomationOpen call, wire a constant to it, and select for it what I think is the equivalent ActiveX  Clas, wire it to the same AboutBox method, followed by an AutomationClose call, the code fails with an error of "Automation Open: Object specified is not creatable". The wire into the AboutBox method shows only "MG17SystemLib.MG17System, but that looks to me like the same thing.
    Can someone please illuminate me on the difference?

    Hi Everyone,
                      I am really very new to Labview and i am in great need for some help.I am assigned a task where i am supposed to create a labview program to control or moniter a BPC203 Piezo controller. I created a program with the help of the instructions provided in the APT-Labview guide provided by Thorlabs.But th program doesnt run . Whenever i try to run it i get the same error which says that "Control HW Communications disabled".I have attached a snapshot of the error message.So i tried to create a small program in labview which would read the volage output.Even there i got the same error message.I suppose there is some mistake on my part which i am not able to correct due to the lack of proper knowledge.Could anyone please help me to solve this problem.A slight elaboration would be highly appreciated.

  • VB versus JAVA

    Being new to JAVA, it seems a bit overwhelming especially coming from a COBOL background.
    What are the advantages of JAVA over VB and vice-versa. I hear VB is easier to learn, but can it run on a webpage ?..What is more marketable or are they both the same as far as that is concerned ?
    I guess I am still in that mode to learn a new language, but don't want to get overwhelmed by a new language, I am mainly looking for a language where it can connect with a database easily.
    Thanks for your input.

    Boy, this is the stuff that religous wars are made of...
    Java: true object-orientation. platform-independence.
    VB: Microsoft's imprimateur. tight integration with Microsoft products and OSes.
    VB might be easier for you to learn, if you've never seen object-oriented programming before, but then again, it's a whole lot easier to program bad habits and crutches in VB.
    Both are marketable skills. Both have database connectivity (Java has JDBC, and a number of adapters. VB has ODBC, DAO, and the whole alphabet soup of Microsoft DB connection technologies.)

  • Connecting to SMTP server

    Hello all,
    One of my co-workers just got a blackerry curve, and I set her up to check her work email with it.  The bizarre thing is, when she receives email on the blackberry, the "From" address will list the organization name, not the email address.
    Here is our setup.
    Company domain "alphabetsoup.com" (this is not the real company name btw, just an example.
    Company domain 2 (for PDA's to check email): "abcpda.com"
    On the exchange server for alphabetsoup.com, I have it set up to forward a copy of her email to her abcpda.com email address.
    when we log into the web interface for abcpda.com, the email looks perfect.
    However, when she receives her abcpda.com  email on her Blackberry, 95% of the time the from line will  read:
    "Alphabet Soup Company"
    though not for every email, but for most.
    Has anyone else seen this, or is anyone else experiencing this?
    does this make sense?
    --Kevin

    Update: the slowness shown by "connection doctor" seems unrelated to my inability to send E-mails. I just tried everything again and currently the connection doctor is able to connect quite quickly. At the same time, apple mail tries to connect and to connect and to connect and finally times out.

  • What does all of this mean? 2.66 GHz intel core 2 duo / 2GB 1067 MHz DDR3?

    please help..i dont really know what all of these numbers represent, could someone please explain them to me in basic non techy language!!! thanx

    Here you go ....
    *2.66 Ghz* is the speed of the central processing unit, which is the brain of the computer.
    *Intel core 2 duo* is the central processing unit manufactured by Intel. Core 2 duo tells you it has 2 paths in it to process computer instructions.
    2GB is how much semiconductor memory the system has to use for loading and running OS X, applications, and other programs. This is different than hard drive disk space, which is usually shown as 80GB, 120GB, etc, which is where programs and data are more permanently stored.
    *1067 Mhz* is the speed that the memory operates at.
    DDR3 is the architecture of the memory. There's lots of technical specifications behind that.
    So, what should you care about in that alphabet soup? The speed of the computer is important, the 2.66Ghz. Faster is almost always better in the long run. That there is 2GB of memory is important. Beyond that, the remaining information is interesting, but won't swing any decisions.

  • Low level TCP/IP

    I am a student and I am interested in beginning to develope some network security solutions. However I have heard from a few sources that Java is unable to work with the lower levels of the TCP/IP protocol. If any one could confirm this information, or make suggestions about how I could start with my projects it would be greatly appreciated.

    Java can access all of TCP/IP.
    To access the layers below TCP/IP (e.g. Ethernet, Token Ring, etc; or other IP protocols such as ICMP/IP or IGMP/IP), you'd need JNI. But relatively few people need to access those layers. Let's assume you are not trying to build your own router.
    To learn TCP/IP Java networking, check out the Java tutorials; there's a link on http://java.sun.com/
    If you want a frightening amount of alphabet soup and to see where TCP/IP is in relation to the other layers, check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TCP/IP
