Alphabets and Apple's Market Share

Does anyone know if Apple has plans for adding more language alphabets to the iPhone and iPad? If Apple is looking for ways to increase its market share, simply adding alphabets of non-standard languages is a cheap way to gain loyal customers. I'd like to type in Pashto, but the alphabet isn't included in the iPhone's list. I can type in Pashto with no problem on my PC, but I can't integrate this part of my life into my iPhone. I'd like to send emails, texts, etc. The alphabet should be a simple addition for Apple's programmers compared with the other magic they perform. I imagine there must be other languages that are also not included. I noticed on some forums that Amharic is missing, which has about 40 million speakers. Pashto has about 30 million speakers. People care about their language. It's an important part of culture and identity. If Apple simply offered these languages on the settings list, people's cultural identity would be integrated more fully with the digital world, and, of course, their iPhones.

Does anyone know if Apple has plans for adding more language alphabets to the iPhone and iPad?
Nobody knows, and Apple itself never provides advance info about new features.
Currently the iPad is missing over 2 dozen keyboards which are present on the iPhone, so it is logical to expect that eventually these will be added to the iPad via software updates.

That will still leave quite a few languages which have keyboards in the full OS X but not yet on the iPhone, such as Hindi, Gujarati, Gurmukhi, Tamil, Tibetan, Armenian, Dari, Uzbek, and Pashto.
You should use the feedback channel to tell Apple you want Pashto added to the iPhone/iPad:

  • DB2's Market Share

I am doing some research for a presentation next week. I'll be talking about Oracle and DB2's market share. I remember reading somewhere that Oracle's maket share is 44% and DB2's is just above 21%.
DB2 enjoys complete monopoly in Mainframe domain because the only database that works with Mainframe is DB2. Right?
    My question is:
Out of that 21% market share that DB2 has, what percentage does sales for Mainframe's DBs constitute?

I have made some searches on the web and I have found some interesting articles I want to textually include here
This was Oracle chairman and chief executive Larry Ellison's response to Big Blue's database-management software gaining market share over Oracle.
"IBM DB2 is only popular on mainframes...which is only used by your father!"
Oracle: IBM DB2 is behind the times
    IBM missed the opportunity?
... I was going through an article in July/August edition of Oracle magazine, when I came across an interesting story behind the evolution of Oracle as a database. The first relational model was laid down by Dr. E. F. Codd in late 1960’s. Dr. Codd was then working with IBM research labs. The relational model indicated the opportunity to organize the data in two dimensional tables consisting of rows and columns and maintain a relationship with common data values, so that the users can access the data by adhoc queries. At that point of time Codd’s relational model did not get the commercial value and IBM did not plan to implement his ideas into the products. Later on in 1977, Larry Ellison, Bob Miner and Ed Oates, siezed the opportunity, adapted the relational model and came out with a relational database, what we call “Oracle” today. If IBM would have adopted and implemented the Codd’s relational model, the story would have been completely different.
So is it that IBM have missed the opportunity to develop a world number one relational database.IBM has a relational database DB2 under its belt. But DB2 did not evolve at the pace Oracle did. IBM then had other products like servers, mainframes for its income, while Oracle had to earn only on relational database products. This could be one of the reason why IBM would have overlooked in promoting relational model which was developed by Dr. Codd.
Again in around 2002-2003 linux was gaining its importance. DB2 was already low on the market share on unix and IBM was working out to now cover up the share by supporting DB2 on linux. But then again Oracle took over the race by announcing their full support to linux. Oracle even changed its back office infrastructure to run on linux. Oracle even affected the market share of the partner Sun by starting “Unbreakable Linux” campaign. According to Gartner, Oracle owns more than 80% of linux database market share as compared to 16.5% of IBM. Oracle’s linux is growing as much faster rate than IBM’s linux. Can say around 6 times.
Hence in all Oracle has been seizing every opportunity in the market ahead of any other competitors. Currently Oracle is number one relational database used. It is evolving at much faster rate than its counter parts. We can say Oracle has much greater predictability , because of which they are able to create such wonderful products before anybody else can even think about it.

  • Where is fleet management capability and Apple's easy claim to that market share?

Where is fleet management capability and Apple's easy claim to that market share?  Are they any ways to track an iPhone's path (meaning stops and history) or any idea when it will be possible to do so?
Our company desperately wants to jump ship from Blackberry.  There is nothing helpful about their interface capabilities and we are slaves to a painful BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server).  We would pluck down the money for seven new iphones in a heartbeat if they could replicate the functionality of Field Force Manager, which allows us to track the entire path of a remote employee throughout the day.  It is my undersetanding that either the laughable Apple policy on "replicating functionality that we already provide" or their policy on turn-by-turn directions prevents anyone from creating an app which would do this.  I'm guessing that running GPS apps in the background would also prevent this, although recent updates seem to allow apps to run in the background to a certain extent (i.e. Pandora).  It would also be a battery hog, but that is the owners choice.
It would be a flick of the wrist for Apple to incorprate it into iCloud, but apparently they don't want another couple of points of smartphone market share.

  • HT3819 Home Share issue: I have a Mac and Apple TV. Both are log into the same Wifi network and the same iTunes account (I can view purchased movies on AppleTV). Home Sharing shows 'ON' for both devices. BUT...AppleTV shows no computers. Itunes sidebar-no

Has anyone else found solution to Apple devices not 'seeing' each other on Home Share?  I have a Macbook Air (new Nov'12) and Apple TV (new Dec'12). Software updated on both. Both are logged into the same Wifi network and the same iTunes account (I can view movies purchased from iTunes on my AppleTV). Home Sharing shows 'ON' for both devices. BUT...AppleTV shows no computers... and ... Itunes sidebar does not have a 'Shared' area at all.  Help please as without this functionality, my Apple TV only provides portal to purchased (i.e. Netflix,...) content which I can get from Wii or Xbox.
I have already tried the following without success:
    1. Homeshare DID work the first day after I setup Apple TV... but the next day it has not worked since then.
    2. Powered off 30 sec then re-started (Apple TV & Macbook & iTunes login)
    3. Checked Firewall settings per Home Sharing troubleshooting guide (correct settings)
    4. Turning on Photostream in iPhoto and selecting iPhoto within iTunes and then checking to see if Photostream shows anything on AppleTV (it shows 'on' for my iTunes account but 'Zero' pictures found ... despite the >3,000 pictures showing avail in iTunes).
I also have 'Remote" app on my iPhone 4, with Home Sharing turned on (same Wifi network)... it has a very similar message as the Apple TV and same result that despite all devices having HomeShare 'on' they cannot see each other:  "Remote will automatically find the iTunes libraries and Apple TVs that have Home Sharing turned on using the account xxxx (it lists my correct itunes account name)."

I solved this by reset of the Wifi (unplug cable and power to both modem and wifi ... wait 60 sec ... plug in modem cable and power ... plug in wifi power and LAN to modem ... restart AppleTV and Mac ... Turn Home Share 'OFF' in iTunes then back "ON" ... it took ~60 sec for the AppleTV to pick up my Mac in computers.

How can I share two differents Itunes accounts in my Apple TV ? I have one and my wife has another account and we want to share both in our apple tv. How can I do this ???

I assume you have different iTunes collections on different PC's, or on different logins on the same PC?  If that's the case then just enable "Home Sharing" in each iTunes using the SAME iTunes username and password as you enabled home sharing on the Apple TV with. The account used for home sharing is NOT the same as the account used to access the iTunes store, so as long as you use the same account (pick one, doesn't matter which) then you should see both of yor iTunes libraries on the Apple TV. Note - each iTunes has ti be running in order for the Apple TV to see the library.

  • HT202213 Can multiple Apple ID's share one computer and music?

My husband and I want to share music but have 2 separate apple ID's. Is there any way for us to share music?

The easiest way is for each user to have their own iTunes library in their own Windows user account on that computer.
To create a new user account:  Start > Control Panel > Add or remove user accounts.  (That is the Windows 7 version; it may look slightly different in another version of Windows.

  • Mum and I used to share same Apple ID. Now she has her own. But when i turn on iCloud on my phone. All her address book linked to mine. What should I do?

I am so sorry, i am very new to this community. Mum and I used to share apple id. Also I created the iCloud with my apple id. Then i created my mum a new apple ID for her. However, her addressbook and phonebook still synced with my phone through iCloud. What should I do?

    Welcome to the Apple community.
If you have correctly set up a separate iCloud for your mother, then your contacts should not be syncing with your mothers. Are you absolutely sure that they are syncing and not just the same contacts.

My mac, ipad and apple tv share the same itunes account.  Why do movies rented from itunes on my ipad or mac not show up in my apple tv?  is there a way to get them there?

Rentals are one-time only downloads, they will not show on other devices/computers for redownloading.
If you rent a film on your iPad or Apple TV then you can only watch it on that device. If you rent it on your Mac then you can move it from there to your iPhone or your Apple TV (if it's a first gen Apple TV) : FAQs about renting movies from the iTunes Store :
If you rented the movie on your computer, you can move it to an iOS device or Apple TV (1st generation). To do this, connect the devices and sync using USB. When you move a rented movie from your computer, it will disappear from your computer’s iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as much as you want, but you can only have it on one device at a time.
If you rented the movie on your iOS device or Apple TV, you can’t move it to any other device.

My wife and I share the same email address and Apple ID. We are not able to send and receive Text Messages to one another. Is the cause of this because we share the same Apple ID? Will we have to set up 2 separate primary email addresses to be able to  send and receive Tex Messages to one another? Like I said, we share the same email address and woul like to keep it that way to keep up with our email together. Is there a way to by-pass having to set up 2 primary emaill addresses if this is the problem?
    Thanks.

no, when using facetime you log in with the apple id you want people to reach you at, so unless you both agree to share one apple id for all the facetime you do, it will be necessary for you to logout and login each time you use the application.

    Hi!
I have a WD my book external hard drive plugged into my imac and I want to share it over my network with my apple tv. I went into system preferences > sharing, checked "file sharing" and added my external hard drive to the shared folder. So now it is listed in "shared folders" but under "users" everything is grayed out (it says "read and write" for "everyone" - but "read and write" is grayed out, and it doesn't let me add or subtract users). Now I can access all of the folders I shared from my imac except for the externalhard drive. What's going on?

Hi RRFS!,thanks for help.I forgot to tell that hard drive has 2 partitions 1:format :Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and that works properly,2:format:MS-DOS (FAT32) and when i "get info" for both :first has shering & permitions:You can read and write - with name and privilege, second has shaing & prermissions:You can read and write- without name and privilege

  • Help! My ex boyfriend and I used to share apple ids. I have since created my own however my email is still linked to his I'd and he receives my text messages from an email address of mine on his ipad that I also receive on mine! How do I remove my email?

My ex boyfriend and I used to share apple ids. Since we are no longer together, I have created my own apple id and associated my email address for texting on my ipad. However, he still receives my text messages that go to my email address on HIS ipad! I don't have his apple id password so I cannot delete my email from his iTunes account, nor will he give it to me. I just don't want him to see my text messages! How do I delete it from his ipad?

Each of you need to have your own apple id's instead of sharing is the best way. But you can go to each phones settings, messages, send and recieve, and down to start new conversation from, and make sure each of you have your own email address with a check mark beside of it not the same address.

Can I Share music from iPhone to wife's iPod we both have different Apple ids, and if I do share music will all my photos be shared too?

Depends on what the source of the music is (iTunes purchases, ripped CDs, etc.), and whether you are syncing to iTunes on a computer. As for simply sharing music directly from the iPhone to the iPod, no, you cannot.

  • ADF Faces RC browser support and browser market share

Maybe some can share their experience in making such choice.
    many thanks
    Jan Vervecken

    Hi Jan,
(e1) That's a really good example, but the deciding point is different than browser version imho.
In that example, the hospital control its technological infrastructure so I would say it's safe to ask the users to upgrade as the hospital team is actually going to do it. In this case it depends if the hospital itself is willing to upgrade its apps, not the users. However, the patients are a special kind of users of which at least a small amount will be physically disabled to some point so you'll have to evaluate the accessibility potential of ADF Faces RC and, as most rich libraries, it's not that awesome. So, in that example, I think you would have to use pure Trinidad instead as its accessibility support is a bit better or at least reduce the usage of rich features in RC (like no drag-drop since it's a nightmare for both blind and mobility reduced users).
(e2) imho, no it wouldn't be safe to use RC if the target date is within 1 year since you don't control the user base in that example and not supporting a browser might cut your customer base and thus reduce your revenue.
    Regards,
    ~ Simon
