Alpine, Pico, Nano question

Please excuse my Terminal newbie status; but here goes: I wish to install Alpine for email (I've downloaded, but not yet installed it). This brings Pico with it. My Terminal installation, of course, contains Nano. Fine. But as you adepts know, the standard Terminal configuration includes a "pico" command that redirects ("symbolic links"? Do I have that right?) to Nano. Isn't this going to cause a problem when Pico is, itself, installed? My intuition suggests that deleting the link might be the answer (I have no idea how this might be done), but then again +I haven't any right to intuition+. Thanks for help.

Why? Apple Mail is quite a bit more handy.

Actually, I didn't know that. I had never heard of nano. It sounds like one of those "pico isn't free enough for me" political issues. I use vi.

No, don't delete anything. Both nano and the pico link reside in /usr. You shouldn't change anything there. If you install alpine, it should install into /usr/local automatically. It is perfectly safe to install a copy of the real pico in /usr/local. alpine will probably use that local copy.

  • Follow-up iPod nano question?

    Hi All,
I have a 4G nano due in the mail and I have been preparing to use it with arch.  I had a previous basic question and got great answers.
My new question is related to its initial use.  I have read that many first use it with a Windows box so that iTunes converts the hfs file system to vfat.  A few others have indicted that they have enabled hfs support in the kernel and used the iPod out of the box.  Does anyone here have experience with the issue?  If keeping hfs is an option, which kernel modules are needed and are they available in the stock kernel?
    Thanks
    Kevin

I have used a few ipods with linux, but i used them with windows first because it only took about 5min. for me to name my ipod and all that through iTunes, so i would reccomend doing it that way and then sync your music using gtkPod in linux..

  • Basic ipod-nano questions - help !

    Hi
i dont know what fifith generation ipod refers to....BUT
i want to get one of the new 8bg ipod nanos.
    3 basic questions:
    1. I'm really confused about the current relationship between ipods & encripted/ copy protected mp3's. I don't buy from itunes (yet) - i just want to use my current mp3 collection for now.
Can i just drag & drop these onto the ipod without any hassle ???
    2. How many songs/mp3s does 8gb actually hold in terms of time/numbers ?
    3. I'm on a three year old emac with OS X 3.9 - Is this an issue or can i just expect to connect up & get on with it. ( I'm fire-wire & only USB 1. on this machine.)
    thanks someone....
    d

A Fifth Generation iPod refers to the 30GB, 60GB or 80GB iPod with video.
    1. If your current MP3s were not purchased from some other online store and are not copy protected they'll work with your iPod
    2. Around 2000 depending on song length and file format. The advertised song capacity of iPod is based on 4 minute songs encoded in AAC (MP4)format at a bit rate of 128 kbps. Longer songs and songs encoded at a higher bitrate or in uncompressed formats take up more space. You'll get a similar number if you MP3 are that bit rate or lower, the figures are pretty approximate.
    3. You won't be able to use Firewire to update, only to charge. USB 1.1 will be signigicantly slower that USB 2 but if you can live with that should work ok.

  • Ipod nano questions

Okay, I am very new to this ipod era. My 11 year old son is just getting in to it. I bought him an ipod nano for christmas. I thought it would be great if I added some songs and games to it for him. This way it would be ready when he un-wraps it. I downloaded some songs from itunes without any trouble. I tryed to get a few songs off of his CD's and wound up putting the whole album on the ipod. How can I get songs off? and.... how do I do it properly (just to add a perticular song or two)? Another question is can I get (buy) games from itunes for ipod nano? Someone told me that you can't for the nano.
I would appreciate any help that I can get. Thanks in advance.

delete the song(s) from itues and re-sync the ipod.. it will take the songs off the ipod.
you should be able to return it if you just restore the ipod to factory settings, package it back up and return it.
I think the nano (not positive) has games like snake and such.. but the games you buy from itunes you cant put on the nano.

  • 8g nano questions

I have an 8G nano that holds approx 2000 songs. Currently my itunes library is close to 3000 songs. It won't allow me to sync the entire library on to the nano. However I'm tired of manually having to select each song. Is there a way to delete the songs from the nano each time I sync & then let itunes choose 8G worth of new songs. I'm currently (finally!) adding all my cd's to my library & when I finish I will have close to 15,000 songs & would rather have itunes do this than me do it myself. The only way I have found that works is to "reset" the nano. If this is the only way, then is it safe to keep resetting it?

Oh yeah, House Cleaning Music, Make it loud to hear it over the vacuum cleaner.
Thanks for your explanations here. I still have one question: Earlier you said that all of the songs are in one location, I take it that is the master location in the user location in the folder 'Music'> 'iTunes'.
In your last post you said to click 'add to library.' Wouldn't I only need to add from that one location, just what I wanted, and be creating a library document for that particular library, but not be duplicating songs to another folder (because I had unchecked 'copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library)?
Just want to be sure that I am not actually creating new folders of songs when I only need to have all my songs in one location.
My sincere thanks for your patience with me in answering this.

  • Engraving on Nano question

Alright so I wasn't sure where to put this, so i just came here.
I was wondering if anybody could help me, In a couple of days I will be ordering an Ipod Nano 8 GB for my girlfriend for christmas, and i wanted it engraved, now a friend at school told me that it is just letters that can be engraved and you can't use any special symbols, but when i went to the engraving screen and typed what i wanted, it gave me the preview and didn't give me an error message. So question is what exactly can you and can't you get engraved on your ipod??
Currently I've been wanting to put this:
    Rafael & Liz
    10.03.06
As you can see I have 3 periods there and also the "&" sign, will that be able to get engraved????
    Thanks in advance

Nevermind, talked to apple support, everythings cleared

  • 6th gen nano question

Question I've used my 6th gen nano for 9 months.  now, when I select an album, it keeps repeating the first song.  Any ideas?  Thanks

Thanks - nice that not a total loss.
but I am afraid that with its small size, its going to end up in washing machine quite a bit.

  • Trading in iPod nano question

Sorry if this has been answered, but I was just wondering if it's possible to trade in my newly bought iPod nano(third generation) 4gb silver model and get a discount for buying the new iPod touch(8 or 16gb...doesn't matter). But if I could get the 16gb at the same discount price as the 8 I'd get that, otherwise what prices would I be charged for the trade-in?

Since you purchased at Best Buy, you cannot return it to Apple.
    Apple does not do "trade-ins".
If you purchased it an an Apple store (or anywhere), you could simply return it within the stores return period.
In the case of Apple, they accept returns within 14 days. If you are simply returning it, you will be charged, usually a 15% restocking fee.
Apple stores will accept old iPods (purchased anywhere) for 10% off a new iPod.
This is to give you a reason to recycle the iPod instead of tossing it in the trash.
...how can I trust your answers?
??? How can we trust your questions?
You can go to the Apple store and ask.
    You can review Apple policies.

  • 1st generation ipod nano question

    Hey everyone,
i have a what i believe is a 1st generation ipod nano ( it's blue )(??) and i had it connected with itunes on another laptop ( windows based ). That laptop died and i recently purchased a new MacBook. So i tried to connect my ipod to the Macbook today but i can't seem to get it to work, i have purcahsed a bunch of songs through itunes that are on the MacBook and i'd like to add them into my ipod.
Is this possible? or because i used my ipod for an older computer am i not able to put the existing songs on my ipod into my MacBook and vice versa, MacBook songs onto the old ipod???
Any help you can give would be great...
    Thanks!

I have an actual 1st generation ipod and am having a similar problem. I had a windows based laptop, which my nano worked on. When I bought my iMac in December '07, I reformatted my ipod to use with my mac. After restoring my ipod, I added some songs and used it for a few days before I got a message telling me that I must restore my ipod. I don't know why the message appeared, but I connected my ipod and restored it again. After that, however, my Mac no longer recognized my ipod in Disk Utility, iTunes, or Finder. I've tried using other Macs, no luck, Windows computers (which actually recognize that something is connected, but it doesn't know what), but nothing seems to work. My ipod turns on fine, I can do everything except add/remove music. It will charge if I plug it in, the entire menu system works. I've done the all the tests in Diagnostic mode and everything seems to be fine, but it still doesn't work. >.<
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  • More Mac OS 10.2 and iPod nano questions

I did a search and found that other people were able to get their iPod nanos to work using 10.2.8, so I decided to give it a try. How did you do this? When I plug it it in, the iPod just flashes "Do Not Connect" and when iTunes tries to open, I get this error message:
"The iPod "iPod" cannot be used because it requires iTunes version 7.0 or later. Go to www.itunes.com to download the lastest version of iTunes or install iTunes from the CD that came with your iPod."
What do I do next to make it run with the USB 1.1 ports on OS X 10.2? I have iTunes 6.0.4.
    Please help! Thanks!
p.s. I'm starting to get really irritated with Apple. Leopard was supposed to be released late 2006/early 2007. I got this iPod back in Nov last year as part of a promotion. Since I thought Leopard's release was right around the corner, I held out and tried to be patient. Then it was changed to spring 2007. And I thought, well, I've waited this long; another month or two won't kill me. Now it's October 2007??? WTH, man. If I knew it was going to be a full YEAR before I could have used my iPod, I would have just bought Tiger back then. Torture, I tell you.

I didn't say all Nanos wouldn't work on the earlier system. What I was implying was YOUR Nano, which came out AFTER iTunes 7 was releases, has updated firmware that requires iTunes7.
I had the same issue with my two video iPods. My 30GB was purchased back in the iTunes 6 days and worked fine on my computer. A year+ later my wife upgraded me to an 80GB (so she could also take possession of the 30GB) which came out after iTunes7. So when I plugged that one in, it refused to work with iTunes 6 and required iTunes 7.
This is something Apple does with a lot of their hardware. For example, most Mac computers are ROM locked to only be able to run the Operating system they shipped with or higher. So you can not take my OS 10.3 eMac and try to load 10.2 onto it. It won't go. Same with the iPods. If the iPod came out when iTunes 6 was the release, they will work fine with iTunes 6 or iTunes 7, but if they came out after the release of iTunes 7, they tend to be locked to iTunes 7 or higher. This is why you often see the simultaneous release of a new version of iTunes when there is a major update or new release of an iPod model.

  • Please help me with this 1st gen ipod Nano question!

Unfortunately, my 1st gen Nano just died, most likely due to the heat in my car since I played it in there all the time. Now I have inherited an old 2nd gen Nano and would love to be able to transfer all the music from my dead 1st gen to this one. Is it possible without the computer that had all the music from my 1st gen? (the computer died long ago as well!) Is there a way to transfer the music from nano to nano without a computer? Or am I just out of luck...? Thank you for any help you can offer.

Just so I understand, your Nano is dead, the computer you used to sync it is dead, and I assume you have no backup.
    Is that right?
Anyway, you can't copy music directly from one Nano to another, dead or alive.
See if this helps: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
I believe you will need to download all your iTunes purchases to a computer and sync it with the replacement Nano. You do not have to pay for previous iTunes Store purchases again.
    Launch iTunes on a computer.
Click on iTunes Store on the left
On the right you will see this
Click on "Purchased" (with the orange blob)
On the summary page that appears select the tab "Not on This Computer" on the right.
On the list that appears, select what you want and then click the "Download" button.
To play what you download, you will need to "Authorize this Computer" for each computer you wish to authorize. This only has to be done once. There is a limit of five computers that you may authorize.

  • Not mini, but Nano question...

A friend of mine came back to visit me, and used my iMac to download some music off of iTunes to his Nano, put the music on, and then flew back home, he has a PC. Since it is formatted for Mac, is there any programs, preferrably free, that will get those songs off of the iPod to his computer? Will any software that copies music from the iPod, like Senuti for Mac OS X work? Or do I need some sort of software that will make his pc accept the iPod? He really doesn't want to lose all that music.
    Thanks,
    Jordan

If the iPod is formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because the Windows OS does not support the HFS Plus file system and therefore will not see the drive. There are third party programs that will allow you to use a Mac formatted iPod on Windows. However none that I know of are free, Xplay for instance gets good reviews but is a commercial program. You can read about it's various functions and download at this link: XPlay
