Already in catalog

Hi. I'm new to lightroom. I'm trying to figure out the meaning of the files that are in the "Already in Catalog" part of the library. Are those the duplicate files or are they the files that were there first? I want to delete the duplicates but I'm not too saavy with this program yet and I would hate to do something I might regret.

"Already in Catalog" is a collection and shows the files that already exist in catalog. If you try to import photos and they are already in catalog, you will be shown an "Import Results" screen. If you click "Show in Library" on this screen, Lightroom will create/modify the collection "Already in Catalog".
If you wish, you can right-click on any thumbnail in grid view, for this collection and choose "Go to Folder in Library". This will highlight the folder where the photos already exist. You can right-click this highlighted folder and choose "Synchornize Folder..." to update/verify the folder contents in Lightroom.

The "Already in Catalog" is a collection that you can delete once you are happy that the photos do already exist in the catalog. A useful check that you can also do is to look at the count of photos in the "All Photographs" collection and ensure that it matches the total of the counts shown next to folders in the folders panel.

  • Missing Photos Already in Catalog

Photos in one of my Collections are shown as Missing, and I can not update them because Lightroom thinks they are Already in Catalog. In fact there are two versions of all these photos in the Catalog grid view: one is shown as Missing and the other is not missing. How can I update the Collection photos without manually recreating the Collection?
In detail: I had some photos in my Lightroom Catalog. I added them to a Lightroom Collection. All was well.
Later, outside of Lightroom, I decided to copy the photos to a new folder on a new hard drive. Then I deleted the original photos and folder.
The LR Catalog now shows two instances of these photos, a good one and a Missing Photo. When I ask to Locate in Finder the good one, LR accurately shows it s location on my hard drive. Both instances of the photos have identical names and thumbnails. The LR Collection shows only one instance of the photos and they all show Missing Photos icons.
When I try to Locate the Missing Photo, I get this message "Already in Catalog. the file "xxx" is associated with another photo in the catalog. Each file can only be associated with one photo." In other words, I am unable to get the LR Collection to recognize the new location of the digital file.
If I delete the photo duplicate with the Missing Photo icon, the photo is removed from my Collection. This is not acceptable for two reasons: I have now 449 "Missing" images in this Collection and I do not want to manually list, delete and then replace each one. I think this is the job of an asset management database like Lightroom, and I depend on it to keep accurate track of everything.
It has been 17 days since I opened a Customer Support case and I have had  numerous exchanges with the Adobe reps, including a 1.75 hr. phone conversation, and still no solution. Sometimes there seems to be a language problem but at other times a lack of product knowledge. Is there anyone out there that can help?

    Ok, thanks for clarifying.
Lightroom does not create duplicates on its own. They arise usually because the user did something, perhaps accidentally. By any chance, did you ever tell Lightroom to "Synchronize Folders..." ?
Lightroom does not follow or find your photos if you move them outside of Lightroom. My recommendation for newcomers to Lightroom is to always move or rename files and folders from inside of Lightroom.
If I understand your situation properly, I think the solution to your mess is as follows: First ... in Windows or Mac Finder (the only time I ever recommend moving things in WIndows or Mac Finder  is to fix or unfix previous moves in Windows or Mac Finder)  ... move (cut and paste, not copy and paste) the photos back to where they were. This should connect the copy that is now "bad", and fixing the problem in your collections. Second, in Lightroom, delete the copies on the new hard drive, which should now be disconnected. Now, you should have one copy of everything (including in your collections) that is connected and usable in Lightroom. Finally (optionally), if you want your photos to reside on the new hard drive, then inside Lightroom, move them to the new hard drive.

  • Imported items not in folder Photoshop Elements 12 Organizer; when import error states already in catalog

I have several folders that are in the same folder in Windows.  Most folders are visible, but some are not.  I attempted moved the folders I could not see in organizer to a folder not in the watch list.  Re-booted, and tried to move them back into the watch folder.  It started the process of importing into Organizer, but failed and stated already in catalog, the they are not visible.  I've uninstalled Photoshop, moved items off the machine, re-installed Photoshop and moved the files back to the watch folder.  But still, not all folders will show up.  Looked at all settings I could find that could impact.  Not sure what to do next.  Any ideas?

  • Trouble importing files because "files are already in Catalog"

First off, I am using Elements Organizer (v 10).  There are certain folders that I can access in the Folders View but they are empty according to Organizer.  If I switch to Windows Explorer, these same folders have lots of images in them.  When I attempt to "Import to Elements Organizer", I get a message indicating "the files are already in this Catalog".
    Any ideas?

When you install Lightroom on a new system, and start it, a default empty catalog is created if you don't point Lightroom to an existing catalog. In your case, you could have either:
    1. Copied your catalog over, install Lightroom, then start it by double-clicking on that copied catalog. No empty "default" catalog is created, you've told Lightroom where the catalog is that you want it to use.
    2. Or you could start Lightroom, new empty catalog is created, do File>Open Catalog, select the copied catalog, after it opens go to the Preferences menu>General Tab and make sure the copied catalog is selected in the Defaulf Catalog section, then delete that empty default catalog.
Absolutely no need whatsoever to use "Import from another Catalog" in that situation.

  • Find previously imported images (Already in Catalog)

Back in LR1 and LR2, when I tried to import images that were already present in the catalog, I had an option to show me / select the already imported images. This is gone in LR4. How can I find in the library the already imported images without fecthing them one by one ?

Thanks john but after trying your suggestion things didn't change (importing an already existing image I get the message "no phots or videos were found to import"). As for my reasons of having such workflow, here is the explanation: I work as fashion photographer and I shoot about 500 pics per session. I use an external software to select the "good enough" images (as its preview is 20 times faster than the ridicously slow LR or other Adobe softwares) and the images selected in a first time can be (almost always are) different from those chose in a second time (as different people are involved in the editing process). @cornelia: images must be good enough to me or to the editor, not to LR, and we might have different opinion and in different moment. At the same time I cannot import 500 images a day in LR.
In any case my main point is that this feature (i.e. the warning that the images were already in the catalog, and where) existed on previous releases of LR and now disappeared, apparently.

  • Apply Automation to assets already in catalog

    Hi,
it seems I missed something in the manual.
I can't find a way how to do this.
    1. I have a device 'D', let's say network volume.
    2. When I upload asset 'A' to the FCS, my automation copy this file to the network device 'D' and also move it to the FCS library.
    3. Asset 'A' is already in FCS (in its Library)
    4. I have also network device 'D1'. I need to copy asset 'A', that is already in FCS to this device.
How to do it ? I don't want to cache file and upload it again to FCS ...
I would expect something like to invoke the same dialog ( that appears when file is upploading to FCS ) with the asset(s) currently selected.
    Thank you.
    Peter

Hi, I am sorry for unclear post ...
Suppose you have an assets in FCS. One day you want to upload some of your assets to device that is FCS' FTP device. How to do it if asset is already in FCS ?
    1. you can cache the asset to your machine and then upload it to FTP device or to FCS's device with response assigned to it which upload it there. But is not what I need (to move asset up and down).
    2. I am just looking for something like "right click" on asset in FCS and choose a command "Upload to device ..." or "Execute response" ....
I hope it is clear now.

  • How to rename files already in catalog?

I accidentally imported a large batch of images into LR 2.5 (on a new Windows 7 machine) using the "Filename" template rather than my customary "Date - Filename" template, and did a LOT of work on the files before I noticed the error.  Is there a way I can reapply the Date-Filename template or otherwise prepend the date (in the intended format) to the file names both in LR and on my disk in one fell swoop?

    Select the images, hit f2.

  • Files in catalog but are not visible.

I have several files that have disappeared from the library but are still cataloged. If I try to re-import one the files I get a message that they are already in the catalog. If I click on show in catalog, the loupe will show "No photos in selected item", and the filmstrip will read "Already in Catalog/0 of 1 photos/file_name".
I have all of the filters turned off.

How do you mean "disappeared from library'? No thumbnail. or no underlying image that's linked to it, other?
One thing I've done in the past is to select the thumbnail, hit delete, and say yes to deleting original image. Try things one image at a time until you've got a fix for your situation.

  • Missing catalogs in user account

    Running Win 7.
Have to move to new win 7 user account ( Win 7 bug!) I have three catalogs in old account, can't see any of them in new user account. Default 'my catalog' is empty. They do not appear in 'browse' either. The pictures are there in 'My Pictures' and appear properly in old user account. How do I get them?
    Thanks

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    1. I don't think PSE8 is 'seeing' images in correct user acct.... windows>properties='No Selection'?
You have to have exactly one thumbnail selected do do Window > Properties.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    2. Can I copy pse8db to c:/users/correct/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Elements Organizer/Catalog/My Catalog?
I think you're asking whether you can copy a catalog.pse8db file to that folder?  Every PSE catalog is a separate folder, containing a file catalog.pse8db.  If you want to move or copy a catalog, you should copy the entire folder, not just the catalog.pse8db file.  It's best to use PSE's File > Catalog > Move command.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    3. Can I rename 'master catalog' to 'My catalog"?
Yes, unless there is already a catalog folder of that name in the same parent folder.   Use File > Catalog > Rename to do the rename -- it will tell you if there is already a catalog of the same name.

  • Import From Catalog Not Importing

    Hi,
I'm using LR 3.4.1 on an 2.8 Dual Core imac running Osx 10.5.8 and 4 gigs Ram.
Im new to LR but have used photoshop (and teach it) for many years so not a complete novice.
Anyway I have decided to import all my ctalogs into a single blank Master one as I can see this will be much more convenient.
I have imported 1 catalog so far using Import from catalog >I then get a preview and option to uncheck or check files I want > then I select>Add new photos without moving.
This worked a treat and I have appeox 55,000 images so far in the Master catalog.
I now want to add another 2 external drives which I also already have catalogs for BUT after selecting >Add new photos without moving nothing happens.
Have I reached a limit of how many images can be in one catalog ? I don't think so.
All my images are keyworded but I'm not sure this makes a difference although I did read something somewhere that this can cause problems with version 2.
Any suggestions? I have trashed my pref file but still no good.
    Cheers,
    Simon Plant

I just found that right clicking the folder and choosing, "Find Missing Folder..." moves it to the correct location in the Lightroom folder list, but this seems, to me, like a pointless step to have to make...

  • Pic in catalog, but not in folder...

    I am using LR 2.7, Windows 7 ...
I have recently established my comfort zone and workflow with LR, CS5 & Bridge. I am going back and pulling everything together with collections and keywords.
I have one folder that has 25 pictures in the folder, or so it tells me that, but when using LR, I select that folder it tells me there are no photos in selected folder. Now the pictures that are in this folder are there, LR even has the number of pics in folder to the side. To view these pics, I found them in the catalog list on the left side of screen. How did they get there?  They can be viewed if I select "already in catalog"  I have tried every process I can think of to get these pics linked back to their orginal folder, but nothing seems to do it.
If you know how to fix this I would be very happy to know the secret....
    Thank you

That was it....Thank you so much, I am not sue if I would have ever figured this out.

  • Removing images from PSE7 catalog whenever try to enlarge view

Just recently, I have started to have an issue whenever I try to enlarge some of my images for viewing on PSE7. When I doubleclick on the image that I want to enlarge, the image is removed from the thumbnails as if it was removed from the catalog. When I try to import the image back, the "already in catalog" message pops up,but I cannot find the image anywhere. Does anyone know what can be causing this and how can I bring the image to show back in the thumbnails index? I thought that I had accidentally hid the images from view, but that does not seem to be the case.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi,
One change done for Network drives is that it shows only those folders present on network (along with its parents) from which you have imported files to Organizer. This is done mainly to enhance performance of Folder Location View when working with Network drives. (Overhead of showing the entire folder hierachy in Folder View is that expanding the folder tree takes significant amount of time.) It is because of this change that new folders created on network don't show up in folder view until they are managed.
Same happens when you create a new folder on a network drive via folder view. The folder is created but since it is not managed/imported to Organizer, it doesn't show up in the view.
So for your workflow, I would suggest the following workaround:
    1. Place all folders inside a parent folder on network drive
    2. Import files from atleast one sub folder of the network using Get Files and photos
    3. The manged sub folder and its parent will now show up. Import all other sub folders of the parent by using 'Import to Organizer' available for the parent folder. You may keep adding new folders to this parent folder in future and import them using import option available for the parent
    Hope that hepls. thanks.

  • Moving Files between 2 different Catalogs

Is it possible to move a file from one catalog to a separate catalog in LR3?  If so, please share how this is done
    Thank you in advance

If you want to leave the image file location where it is now, you can achieve it by doing the following:
Select the photo(s) to be moved in Grid Mode
    Chose Export as Catalog
Chose a location for the exported catalog and uncheck "Export negative files"
    Perform the export
Remove the selected images from the original catalog
By doing so, you have created a new catalog with just the images selected in the process. If you want to incorporate those into another, already existing catalog, you can do so by importing the newly created catalog with the function "Import from catalog".
If you also want to export (= duplicate) the original images with the new catalog, check "Export negative files" in the process of exporting.
Whether you chose "Include available previews" in the process is not so relevant. By doing so, the newly built catalog will already be supported by built previews from the beginning, of not, the first launch of the new catalog will initiate a build of the previews.

  • PSE9 Catalog Issue

I am having issues with my catalog.
I have run optimize/repair to no avail.
I take a lot of sports pictures for our local high school.
The procedure I do is as follows:
I manually import my pictures from my camera card into a folder outside of PSE9
I then created a subfolder under that folder and rename my pictures use PSE9 editor.
I then edit my pictures in organizer
I was half-way through my editing and realize that not all of my pictures were available in the organizer.
What is interesting it will not import all my pictures from the subfolder which has the renamed pictures created by PSE9.  When I try to import them it says pictures are already in catalog?  I cannot see the pictures and I have view all turned on.  Any suggestions?
I am not too sure what is going on, but this is becoming quite frustrating.
By the way, is there a way to limit the number of folders that show up in the catalog as I do not need my documents folders in the catalog?
    Any other suggestions.

When re-naming make sure not to duplicate previous file names.

  • Multiple problems with PSE10 Organizer

I have Photoshop Elements 10 that I am using with Windows XP with Service Pack 3, a Pentium 4 CPU with 3 GHz, 2 GB of RAM and 48.6 GB of free disk space. I have had multiple problems with Organizer since I started using it.
When I first got PSE10, I imported 8 years of my photos into one catalog in Organizer. I'm not sure how many images were included in this catalog but from what I've read, there's no limit to the number of images that can be placed in a catalog.
Question: Is there any limit to the number of images that can be put into one catalog?
    Catalog A
Problem 1) People recognition didn't work. When I tried to find people for tagging, the feature didn't work. After researching the problem online, I found that others who had the same problem solved it by rebuilding the catalog a few hundred images at a time. I deleted the original catalog with all of my images and created a new catalog with just 800 images from this year. Then, people recognition worked, and I was able to tag people. The only other feature that I have used in Catalog A is that I have edited a few images to improve exposure. I have not rated images, stacked them, renamed them or created albums. With this catalog, the Organizer and the Editor still work together so when I select a photo in Organizer to fix, the Editor opens up with the photo for editing like it is supposed to do.
    Catalog B
I created another catalog that had about 900 different images from a European tour. I deleted some of those images so there are now 760 images in this catalog. At first, all the Organizer features seemed to work fine in this catalog. I was able to pull photos from Organizer to fix in the Editor. I rated all the images, stacked and renamed some photos and created several albums under an album category.
Problem 2) A couple of days ago, the Organizer and the Editor stopped working together. Now, when I select a photo in Organizer and click on Fix, Edit, the Editor window comes up but the photo does not appear in Editor. The only way I can get an image into Editor is to pull it directly into Editor. Then, when I want to save it as a Version Set I have to choose File> Organize Open File in order to save the image as a version set.
Question: How do I get the Organizer & Editor to work together again?
Problem 3) The Exif data has disappeared on quite a few of the images in Catalog B even though the Complete radio button is highlighted under the Properties panel. Some of those images were never edited or re-saved.
Question: How do I get the Exif data back into Properties.
Problem 4) Yellow question marks continue to appear on the top left of some images even though these images have not been moved. The Organizer searches for the "missing file" and finds it quickly but why is it "missing"? I have gone through the albums in this catalog, completed the missing file searches on all the images so that no yellow question marks appear and when I go back to the catalog the next time I find the yellow question marks are there again!
Question: Why does Organizer think the files are missing? Why isn't the file location remaining the same?
Problem 5) When I re-opened Catalog A with the general 2012 images, I got a message that my watched folder had new photos to import. When I clicked on ok, the next window brought up 3 photos that were already in Catalog B of my European tour that were taken in September. Somehow, the Date Created and the Dated modified had been changed from 9/12 to 11/12 so the Organizer thought they were new images when they were not.
Questions: Shouldn't the Date Created remain constant?  The Date Created does not seem to represent the date the picture was taken, so what does that date represent? How can I keep the date created from being changed?
    Both Catalogs
All of the images in both catalogs show creation dates that are later than the date modified, (example: date created of 6/12 and a date modified of 3/12).
Question: How is it possible that the date created is later than the date modified?

    Hey Paysonite,
A lot of questions hmm!!! Let me try to answer few of them.
Question: Is there any limit to the number of images that can be put into one catalog?
Ans: No, you can import as many images in catalog you want. Just to add, as the size of catalog grows, Organizer's perfromance will be affected.
Question: Why does Organizer think the files are missing? Why isn't the file location remaining the same?
Ans: As you mentioned in your comments, you have deleted some files (i assume from explorer). But these deleted files are still present in Organizer. Since the deletion happened outside the organizer, so Organizer is unaware of the deletion. So when organizer tries to read the files (which were deleted), Organizer is unable to find then and thus thinks that files are missing.
Questions: Shouldn't the Date Created remain constant?  The Date Created does not seem to represent the date the picture was taken, so what does that date represent? How can I keep the date created from being changed?
Ans: Date created represents the date on which the files was created on your files system (or into OS). It is not date when the images was shot (actual shot date is Date time Original in Organizer).
Question: How is it possible that the date created is later than the date modified?
Ans: A simple way to do it is-Suppose you have an image which was brought/copied on July (i am explaining this with the help of month only. Assume date to be 1st and year to 2012). Now change the system date to August. Edit this image in Editor (without creating a version set for easy illustration). Now date created is July and date modified is Aug.
Copy this fine on flash drive/pen drive. Delete the original file from windows. Change the system date to Sept. Now copy the file in windows and see its properties. It has Date created as Sept and date modified as Aug, which answers you question.
I am unable to fully understand your remaining questions. Please elaborate.
Also please let me know if you need more info with above answers.
