ALRIGHT, FCP- Share- AVCHD officially HANGS!! NOOOOO

so i exported 30 minutes of hdv 1080i60 and 8 hours later the status is stuck at encoding the video file and it just sits at 8 minutes left of encoding after 2 hours. Again, 8 hours later, it says 2 hours elapsed. no burned dvd. it was a menu, and just had one my psd's as the graphic...thats it. i got snow leopard, fcs3, all up to date, 3 gigs of ram, all media is on a lacie 7200 drive with plenty of space. i have tried diff blank dvds....all of which were dvd-r.
now the million dollar question....WHAT IS THE PROBLEM!

First, do not put the disc in the drive before you begin the process. Wait to be instructed to insert the disc. Second, it might help a lot if you had far fewer applications open.
Try exporting to QuickTime Movie and using Compressor to create a batch template. In job actions for the batch you can add your background and logo just like the Share function in FCP.

  • Re-use of .264 and .ac3 created by compressor or fcp-share

    Good Morning from Belgium
    Here is my question
How do I reburn a blu-ray without having to reencode in compressor or using "share" in fcp. In other words, how to re-use the .264 and .ac3 files created in a previous burning session ? I have tried Toast 9 but get 2 files (one with audio, one with video) .
Can I safely delete those huge files if it is not possible to use them later with any software ?
    Hope you can help
    Michel

I can put a movie in Compressor, add the video and audio presets and then select "Create BD/AVCHD Disc" in the Job Action menu but that will only create one disc.
My idea was to save the .264 and .ac3 files so that I could burn another disc at a later date.
I can do this with Toast but there is no way I can use those files in Compressor again (that I know about).
What exactly did you mean by burn it from a disk image?
I can do that in Toast but I don't know how to do it with Compressor.

  • FCP Export using Compressor hangs 'em both

I searched for the answer earlier this week. Didn't find anything, but I eventually figured it out. Here was my problem:
The Compressor preferences allow you to choose a default preset. I never had defined a default preset, and things worked fine. When I do choose a default preset (I chose DVD Best Quality: 120min: All), there were problems. Selecting sequences in FCP and doing "Export using Compressor" results in a hang on both apps.
The number of sequences or their lengths seem to have no effect on the process. Just thought I'd post this in case anyone else has the same problem.
    Alan

This sounds different from my problem. I was getting a hang when the sequences were being added to the batch list. It wouldn't even give me a chance to submit the batch. Maybe someone else has a clearer idea of what you're experiencing.

  • When clicking "Advanced" in "Share", window keeps hanging! :(

    Hey everyone,
When I go to "share", selecting "Computer" and then "Windows Media", then click on the "advanced" button, Premiere keeps hanging!
See screen capture. It also does this for AVI, Quicktime, and most of the others.
    HELP! What's going on?

Along with the full specs of your computer, and your source files, this ARTICLE might be useful for setting up your computer for an editing session.
If that does not help, then this ARTICLE might help you find clues as to what is causing the hang.
    Good luck,

  • FCP and AVCHD by Sony

HI, I hope someone can help me. I got a FCP 7. I shot video with a Sony CX550v HD. I am not an expert in setting the FCP in order to get full HD videos after editing. There is anyone can help me in setting the FCP? Easy set-up and video-sound settings are quite confusing to me. Many Thanks

The best thing to do is to copy the entire card to a hard drive and give it a name. That will be your reel name. It will also be your first Back-up.
    Open your new FCP project.
Select Log & Transfer from the file menu.
Navigate to the media by clicking on the folder icon in the upper left hand corner of L&T window.
Select the ROOT level of that new directory. You do NOT have to drill down to the mts files.
At this point you can either select in & out points in each clip before transferring or you can select All the clips and just walk away while everything is transcoded.
When you drag your first clip into a sequence FCP will ask you if you want to match the sequence setting to the clip. Select YES. If your sequence already matches your media you may not see that dialogue.
If you only have only one camera you're done.
If you have multiple cameras it gets a little more complicated due to the limited file naming protocol for AVCHD.

  • FCP 6.0.1 hangs...

After I capture for my HDV device (Sony), FCP gives the spinning wheel of death and I'm Forced quit on FCP.
FCP seems to be very fragile when it comes to capturing video/audio -- still.
So for the heck of it I open iMovie HD and it recognizes my camcorder without any of my input, I click on Import and it captures the footage. Can't belive a product that came with my MacPro actually does a better job than a $1700+ product?
What the heck is going on?
    Rob.

I'm a software engineer and I know what a user error is and having a spinning wheel that never stops spinning with NO information ever provided to the user is MOST DEFINITELY NOT user error.
There are two basic approaches to managing user input:
    1. Don't let them shoot themselves in the foot
    2. If you do let them shoot themselves in the foot at least trap for it and let them know which foot they hit
Neither of these is happening in FCP 6. I don't see how you can equate a spinning wheel and FCP not responding to being "user error" -- simply because FCP has stopped responding (you have no way of knowing anything).
I agree FCP is not simple and that is fine, no complaints there -- it's a great product and I love it for what it can do. But when it comes to working with other devices it was fragile in FCS and is fragile in FCS2 -- it should at the very least "timeout" if it is having a problem working with the device/camcorder. I define "fragile" as meaning if something is NOT configured exactly right (aka user shooting themselves in the foot) FCP should not go to never never land (spinning wheel of death) with the only way to come back to reality is with a Force to Quit.
But regardless of whether this is or isn't user error (which really is NOT relevant), no information is provide to help the user avoid the situation or even attempt to fix the situation. For what has cost me $1800 -- connecting to an external device/camcorder should NOT be a roll the dice situation.
    $1300 FCS + upgrade to FCS2 $500 = about $1800 actually.
    Rob.

  • FCP 7  & AVCHD video

What is the best way of loading AVCHD video and have it all work smoothly in FCP7?  I've been told it is not possible and the best thing is to switch to Adobe Premiere.  Thoughts?

Media drive is where you store your imported/converted MEDIA...your footage. Your project should not be on that drive...it should be on the SYSTEM drive. But you can back up the project to the media drive. And yes, you should have a completely different drive/set of drives where you archive your camera masters.
The point of all of this is safety. If your OS drive fails, you still have your media, and a backup of your project on the media drive. If the media drive fails, you have your project still, and all of your camera originals so that you can reimport and rebuild your project.
When we shot tape...we kept the tapes. Now that we are shooting tapeless, you don't keep the recording media, those SD cards. You re-use those. But you should be backing them up...archiving all the media like you did with tapes...thus the archive hard drives. If your camera masters and imported media are on the same drives, and they die...ALL is lost.

  • DVD will not complete using FCP share

I am trying to burn a DVD in FCPx. The audio and video files are created but the DVD will not finalize. The progerss bar sits at 95%. What should I do. I have been able to create DVD's in this way in the past.

Can you try another project to see whether it is a project-specific problem? (You can choose HD as output device so you don't waste media.)
How long is your movie and what is its format?

  • Comparing video quality of AVCHD BluRay discs using Final Cut Pro Share vs Compressor

Up front, I will admit to being a newbie when it comes to using Final Cut Studio 3 and would appreciate some feedback from the Apple forum experts.
I have spent a lot of time trying to determine how to achieve an optimum group of Compressor 3.5.2 settings so that the playback video quality of an AVCHD BluRay disc is equal to or better than one created by using the simpler auto settings of FCPro Share, version 7.0.2.
When using Compressor’s auto/default maximum settings, I experienced the same error message reported in:
Error MessageDuring Creation of Blu-ray Disc in FCP and Compressor 3.5
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/12073794#12073794
I have since made some Compressor AVCHD Discs with smaller bit rate settings and compared video quality with a single FCP Share AVCHD disc.  Both seem to be equal in providing a very good video when viewed on my new Panasonic DMP BDT 310 BluRay player. However, the Compressor AVCHD discs show some motion artifacts not present with the FCPro Share version, especially when scrolling text or when objects are moving through the field of view, and visible artifacts are seen from a stationary chain link fence and other lattice work in the background of the video sample.
My sample video used for the comparisons between Compressor and FCP Share discs is a 21 minute duration home movie, originally captured from a mini DV, Canon HV30 1080i camcorder using ProRes HQ encoding(1440x1080), and dragged into FC Pro 7.0.2 timeline where 10 chapter markers have been inserted.
To create an AVCHD disc using FCPro Share, Markers are used to set the IN and OUT points, Select IN to OUT from the timeline, pull down File Menu Share, Select Create BluRay from options in pop out Share pane, and designate output device along with picture files for Background, Logo, and Title options. When these are completed, click on Export.  My 21-minute video required almost two hours for encoding including about 10 minutes for burning. This accomplished on an iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.
To prepare this same 21-minute video for use with Compressor, I again Select IN to Out from the FCPro timeline, but this time use File Export as a QuickTime Self Contained movie including Chapter markers. Then Open Compressor, choose Create BluRay from Template pane, right click on the down arrow in the Batch window and load the QT self contained movie file. From there I went to the Inspector window and tried various combinations of bit rate settings along with Frame Encoder options such as Better or Best motion parameter controls.
I have tried the following combinations of Bit rate settings along with varying Frame Encoder controls and burned an AVCHD disc for each example:
    Example A
Compressor set to 6 Mbps Average and 8Mbps Maximum, Frame Encoder settings OFF. Approximately 4 hours to encode although the time remaining estimator indicated a larger value of ~7 hours; not an accurate estimator at all.
    Example B
Compressor set to 6 Mbps Average and 8Mbps Maximum, Frame Encoder settings ON, using “Better (Linear Filter) and Better (Motionadaptive)” settings. Approximately 4 hours to encode, not the 13 hours that were estimated.
Conclusion: Comparing A & B Compressor versions, Disc B showed some improvements in reducing motion artifacts over Disc A.
    Example C
Compressor set to 13 Mbps Average and 15 Mbps Maximum, Frame Encoder settings ON, using “Better (Linear Filter) and Better (Motion adaptive)” settings. Multipass checked. DeInterlace was checked. Unknown hours to encode; about 8 hours done overnight..
Conclusion: Disc C showed some minor improvements reducing motion artifacts over Disc B
    Example D
Compressor Auto settings,i.e., 15 Mbps Average and 17 Mbps Maximum, Frame Encoder settings ON, using “Better (Linear Filter) and Better (Motion adaptive)” settings. Multipass checked. Approximately 12 hours to encode, done overnight. Inserted disc next morning after the overnight encoding was completed, and a few minutes later an error message pane appeared that the maximum bit rate had been exceeded.  This message was consistent with the Apple posted thread referenced above. Unfortunately the long overnight encoding was wasted.
It seemed to me that the best Compressor settings for suppressing the motion artifacts were displayed by the disc burned in Example C, i.e.,  13/15 Ave/Max Mbps with“Better” Motion settings in the Frame Encoder.
However, when this disc was compared to the AVCHD Disc burned using the FCPro Share, the latter still seemed much better. I do not know what the auto bit rate values are as set in FC Pro, but for me, the quality is quite good AND the motion artifacts are significantly reduced, especially evident with the scrolling text.
Sorry about this long post, but I thought the detail would be necessary for the experts, and maybe helpful to others trying to get started in this BluRay arena.  Did I misuse Compressor?  I think the sample video exported as a self contained QT movie was the right thing to do?  Not sure where I went wrong.
Thanks in advance for Feedback and Recommendations.  For now, I’m going to stay with the simpler process using Final Cut Pro Share function.
    BoBo

Thank You, Brad, for responding;  glad to hear I'm not the only one having similar Compressor issues.
You may have hit on something.  Perhaps Compressor's use of H.264 encoding was the reason for my motion artifacts?  And perhaps Final Cut Pro Share retains the 1440x1080 quality as it burns the AVCHD BluRay disc?
I had Toast 10 for less than 30 days a couple of years ago, and was lucky to get a refund.
What version of Toast do you have?  Wondering if new Toast 11 has improved previous bugs, especially upgrading its Chapter text, pictures, music.  I would go back to Toast if it came close to mirroring DVD Studio Pro, or even iDVD capabilities.
    Thanks,

  • FCP X hanging when loading an event

After my external HD got disconnected while editing, I rebooted the program but FCP X is just hanging on the start up at 'loading "xxx" event' What can I do? Is the event corrupted?

yes, I think it could be that your even got corrupted. Try removing it for the even folder and put it on the desktop if FCP X loads ok then you have to delete the even. that what I had to do :-( ...thanks to apple

  • IMovie constant hang on Share/Media Browser/Export

    Setup:
    - Mac Pro, 2008
    - 6GB ram
    - Clean install of 10.6
    - Clean install of iLife '09
    - Latest patches for all.
    - Roughly 100GB free on /User partition (love being able to move it)
    - Roughly 470GB free on /
First import of footage from Canon HD HDD camcorder (~7 minutes, total). Import is fine, created a project and added all the clips. Any form of export via the Share menu will hang iMovie. I've tried Sharing at 720p and the next resolution down, putting directly to iDVD and going with a real Quicktime export -- all of them will hang iMovie.

Need to bump this, because I'm in need of help.

  • Fcp 7 hangs on choose setup

I'm using FCP 7.0.3 on a 2011 MacBook Pro 15" i7 with 8Gb ram. Suddenly when I startup FCP the startup proces hangs on the "choose setup" screen. I cannot choose anything (just get a 'ploink' sound when I try to do so) and have to quit using Force Quit. I repaired permissions, threw away the FCP preferences... doesn't help. The strange thing is that this problem suddenly appeared and I didn't change anything recently (no new plugins or other programs). What's happening here?
    Mark

    1. Use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions on your system hard drive.
    2. [Trash Final Cut Pro preference files|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9756086&#9756086].
    3. Restart the computer.

  • FCP Beachball

I have noticed since I installed a PCI Sata controller card, and new ram, plus new drives, I have been having problems.FCP (5.1.4) hangs up and I get the S.B.B.O.D. I must then push the power button to shut down. The drives are 500G western digital My Book externals. Connected to the PCI card via sata cables. Operating system 10.4.11. I have 8 gigs of ram. I added 6 Buffalo pieces in matched pairs, to my existing Apple ram. The PCI card is a Norco 4 import card, rated for either a PCI X OR PCI Mac system. I have downloaded Rember which I intended to check my ram today, I have used Tech Tools and everything checks out. I am in no hurry because I am done limping through my last project and have time to figure this out. .I have a Dual 2 GHz Power Pc G5. I was certain that after I came home and loaded the ram the card and the drives I would be in the fast lane, it was also told to me by the reseller he used the exact setup on his G5 identical and it was mind boogeling at the speed....ya right, its mind boogeling alright. Sometimes applications do not quit they have to be force quit...FCP will work until I leave the computer for 10 minutes or so. First an Icon like a reel of film replaces the curser, if you move the curser it becomes the %$&%^%& Beachball. At this point your only option is to push the start up button and hard quit. I would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance

Well, you've not added anything to the CPU's speed... but I don't see anything that's not compatible here. Have you set your system up to not spin down the drives in the energy control panel? Might try that if it's set to let the computer go to sleep. Don't let it. Monitors are OK, but spinning down the drives in a FCP5.x system can result in the beach ball routine.
If you've not rebuilt that startup disk in a while, it's likely that doing so might speed things up a bit.

  • AVCHD again

I am really sorry if this is a cross post. Searching for AVCHD gives a myriad of results.
Today I received FCE and I am playing with it a little bit.
I hava a Sony HDR TG3 full hd camcorder. Importing movies into iMovie works perfectly. Now I tried to import same clips to FCE. It succeeds to import the clips, but when I watch them in FCE the image is blinking every few seconds....
    What am I doing wrong?

I am also plaing with FCE 4.0.1 and AVCHD from a Panasonic HD PAL 1080.
You will see from my other posts that my problems are mainly due to diagonal/moving lines which appear as a saw (jaggies ?). Even if I am not at the end of my experiments I whish to share my opinion: may be someone could confirm or give other help.
The AVCHD files are *.MTS. Imported into FCE both as Log&Transfer from CArd or direct from Camera ith setting 1920*1080i50 gives the same result. File exported with different compressions or even without compression (mov or m4p with or without Elgato Turbo264HD) are very similar. I could get a good improvement on the diagonal lines using Jes Deinterlacer but I remain with the impression the overall details are worse.
A much better result you get using only Elgato Turbo 264HD software. I refused to accept that FCE was not as good as Elgato and I am going on with experiments.
I imported the same MTS files into iMovie09 (first copy all the AVCHD directory on Hard Disk than make the Event with original format 1080). The video you get is better than the one you get with FCE. Than you can do one of the following: if you do nont need a greater editing you can export the video from iMovie with one of its own file formats. If you wish to use FCE you can export from iMovie the *.xml for FCP (share... export for FCP.XML) and then import the project into FCE (yes FCE imports the xml files intended for FCP). In this way you get one big single clip inside FCE but you can start from it and use the full editing possibilities of FCE. Exporting the final video to *.MP4 with or without ElgatoHD you get a much better diagonal lines that the same video obtained by FCE inporting the clips directly from AVCHD and you do nont need to use Jes deinterlace or better saied I have not jet tested Jes on this file; may be you could reduce the effect of Jes deinterlaceing and get a perfec video.
In my opinion the flow: import into iMovie -first editing - export XML - import into FCE - perfection editing - export final video . could be the better system.
It is only my opinion: I have also developed my explanation for that: originally FCE was not able to import AVCHD and Apple addes this feature later (may be only with 4.0.1) that could mean with a quick patch not really well done. iMovie09 is a simpler program and was able to get AVCHD from the begin... may be it works better.
I would like to get some opinion on this.
    Thanks.

  • AVCHD 1920x1080 must be rendered in FCE 4.0?

I'm new to this....bought a Canon HF-100 and went off on a trip with two 16gb sdhc cards, shooting everything at 1920x1080. I have several hours of video I need to edit.
Today I just upgraded FCE 4.0 because it can handle AVCHD and I have log/transferred in a few clips only to find I have to render everything on the timeline. ARRGH!!!
I THINK it's because easy set-up only has a frame size of 1440x1080, is that why I have to render?
Is there a way to change the sequence setting in FCE4.0 to 1920x1080?
I heard about Streamclip, but it doesn't seem to support .mts files
Do I have to buy FCP? Yikes! I can't afford it!
    Does anyone have any ideas???
    Thanks!!!

Thank you for your response, Tom.
Is it better to have Streamclip convert the AIC files to 1440 or have FCE render them (which I guess is doing the same thing)? Both seem to take a LONG time.
This appears to be an onerous workflow: log and transfer all 600 clips, then either render them in FCE or convert them to 1440x1080 in Streamclip and re-import, edit the movie, and export the movie.
AND, I just tried to export two minutes off the timeline at best quality 1440x1080 QT conversion: it took 35 minutes!!!
Does that sound right? Any suggestions for steamlining the workflow or speeding things up?
Perhaps upgrading to an 2x2.8 GHz Quad-Core with 8 GB RAM instead of my measly 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core 4 GB RAM machine...but wait..first I need to buy more hard drives...since the AIC files are HUGE (1.7g for a 2 minute clip!)...but...
Since FCE only supports 1440x1080 I'm guessing to realize the full resolution of my camcorder I need to get FC Pro, which, I assume, does support 1920x1080, but does FCP support AVCHD?
Any advice is greatly appreciated since I am new to HD and AVCHD...thanks!
PS I wish Canon, Panasonic, and Sony would tell consumers that AVCHD camcorders require FC Pro and $6,000 Macs to do editing!
