ALSA and OSS

Hello, brand new Arch user here.
I noticed in http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beg … igure_ALSA that it says ALSA is installed by default, and that you can change to OSS if desired.  Is this still true?  On my fresh system, lsmod shows modules like snd_pcm_oss, snd_mixer_oss, and nothing about ALSA.  The module snd-pcsp mentioned in the wiki is not present, either.  Note, I do not really know what I am talking about, so please correct me if I am wrong.

They only support the old OSS3 (which was in the kernel) and don't work with the new OSS4 API.
OSS4 hast working ALSA emulation
That happens when you're not specific enough - people correct you, grr.

  • Can I use ALSA and OSS?

My system currently runs fine with ALSA.  I've recently started using cedega (wine) to run some games.  I've read that cedega performs better under OSS.  Can I install OSS to my system to only use for cedega, or will the two sound systems conflict?
    Thanks

You DO notice that's the ONLY place in the beginner's guide where its used that way? Just to ensure the latest python is gotten. And that everything else there uses pacman -S?
To OP, alsa-oss is your best bet, don't change between alsa and oss constantly, most apps will need resetting....

  • Problems with ALSA and OSS

    Hi.
I'm a ArchLinux user and I have been having problems with my audio, specifficaly the microphone.
My microphone works well with Audacity and I use it for speaking trough TeamSpeaker and since TeamSpeak still uses OSS I installed alsa-oss and added aoss to my TeamSpeak command. But, for some reason, the application stopped working (this have nothing to do with my real problem) and as substitute I installed TeamSpeak in Windows XP running on Virtualbox with ALSA audio. Everything worked smoothly until some weeks ago.
The microphone on Virtualbox stopped working but I still hear sound. And the funny thing is that TS Linux got working again, but if I use it with aoss I cannot use the microphone but I hear sound and to have microphone I have to use it without aoss but then i dont have sound on other apps.
And to get microphone on Virtualbox I have to enable OSS in preferences and use aoss but then, wich I don't understand why, I dont get any sound with other apps. :\
I have no idea what triggered this problem.
    My audio device:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
    ALC660-VD Analog

    No one? :\
Not even why Virtualbox with OSS and aoss "steals" the sound to the other apps?

  • Using Alsa with OSS

Hello everyone.  I'm using Alsa with Pulseaudio for sound, but I'm having trouble getting it to work with my computer's speakers. I can, however, get Alsa to work with my usb headset. I considered using OSS instead of Alsa, but I heard that it didn't work with usb microphones. Is there any way to run both Alsa and OSS at the same time, so I can use the headset and the speakers? Thanks.

I think Alsa might not have loaded my drivers

  • Asus M3N78-EM settings for hdmi to TV Alsa OR Oss

I have had no luck in getting sound to my lcd tv over hdmi.
I installed Arch and Alsa 1.020 two days ago.  I have tried various entries in .asoundrc or /etc/asound.conf with no success.
I installed oss today through pacman, but had no luck there either.  Xbmc couldn't initialize the card.
I have no preference for either Alsa or oss, just something that works.
If anyone has the settings for hdmi for either Alsa or Oss, I would be grateful to receive them.
Btw, other posts have mentioned ossxmix but I was unable to find that in pacman or aur.  Ossmix is not easy to configure.

Thanks Noel, I tried it, but nothing happens.
I don't know if what's displayed in NVIDIA's panel actually reflects the current  mode of operation, but according to that, NVIDIA ia always assigned to HDMI and Intel to LCD.  If HDMI is not connected, it looks as if NVIDIA does nothing.
I downloaded the latest beta driver from NVIDIA and will try it, but I don't have much hope.
BTW, the problem is not only with Photoshop. Topaz Labs plug-ins can also run as stand-alone (using 'tlfusionexpres', Photoshop not running) and the same crash happens there, when I use a brush.

  • No sound with ALSA and/or Pulse from built-in Intel 5 Series Card

    Hello,
I posted a thread about a similar problem to this 4 years ago, but that solution is no longer working for me, and I'm just now returning to Arch after floating between a few different distros, so I'm not as knowledgeable about this as I might once have been.
Basically, my problem is that sound does not work on my laptop, neither through the internal speakers or headphone jack, and neither with plain ALSA nor Pulseaudio. This leads me to believe that there is some underlying problem that once solved, will allow plain ALSA and Pulse to work properly, but that's just speculation. I've put several hours of research into this so far with no luck. Everything in alsamixer is unmuted and looks right. I'm going to dump as much relevant info on my setup below in hopes that someone more knowledgeable than I can spot the issue:

  • OEM and OSS on Solaris 7

    Can anyone help?
I have written a complete Secure Configuration Guide/Policy for my company using Oracle 8 on Windows NT. However, they now want me to do another Guide for Oracle 8 on Solaris 7. I am trying to use my previous guide as a template, but a good third of my guide is dedicated to using OSS and OEM on Windows NT.
I have come across a PDF document on installing OEM and the last section is for Installing on UNIX, but it begins with "Insert the OEM CD into the CD-ROM drive."
Oracle 8 on Windows NT included OEM and OSS on the CD, but the CD I have for Oracle 8 on UNIX does not have these on it. Well, at least I cannot see it in the Software Asset Manager.
    Does anyone know:
    1) Do I need to get hold of OSS and OEM separately? Or are they on the CD-ROM, and I am simply doing this wrong by assuming use of The Software Asset Manager?
    2) Are there any Oracle 8 Administration documents on the web anywhere for UNIX including OEM, OSS, and general Oracle 8 Admin? I have been looking for over two weeks now, and can't seem to find anything...
    Someone please help! :)
    Russcle

The OEM that came with my distribution of Oracle8i EE was on a separate CD to the server software. On the OEM CD was NT and Solaris versions of OEM plus some Win9x client stuff.
hope this is of some use.
    derek.

  • No sound with alsa and integrated Intel sound card, any advice???

Hmm. I have an onboard Intel sound chipset as well.. I noticed your rc.conf doesn't have "snd-hda-intel" in the MODULES array; make sure you add that.
I never figured out how to read the right side of lsmod's output, so I'll assume that, despite having the snd-hda-intel module, you haven't enabled it yet. Try (as root or through sudo) `modprobe snd-hda-intel`. It may need underscores instead of hyphens; they seem to be interchangeable.

  • Can't get 4.1 working with ALSA and Intel card

    Hello everybody,
My problem is simple, but I cannot find any solution for it.
I have Arch Linux 64 bits installed with ALSA and a Intel onboard sound card
I can get the audio working simply installing ALSA and unmutting the channels, but I get no sound at the rear speakers and the center speaker (subwoofer).
    I run:
    $ spearker-test -c 5
And all I have is sound at the 2 front speakers.
Looking at alsamixer I only saw configuration for 2,4 and 6 channels. I am currently using the configuration for 4 channels.
I unmuted everything in alsamixer (playback) and nothing changed.

When i am trying to create a z programs it is asking Access key.
Can anybody please tell what  is Developer key, Access key and OSS key and difference among them.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
There is no need to pay for developer key or object access key. You can get them from service market place under Keys & Request tab and SSCR. You need to have a valid S-User with proper authorization to generate the keys. Below is the link for the same where select the Keys & Request and under that SSCR Keys. Then from there you can generate Developer and object access keys.

OSS is the SAP support Portal, where SAP releases patches, notes, and you can raise message to SAP for any specific problem of SAP.
SSCR - SAP Software Change Registration
For any changes to be done to the SAP standard programs, we have to register the objects or programs and get the Access key to change the program.
We can have a list of all the objects registered by you which helps to keep a track of SAP standarad programs changed by you.

  • Surround Sound Via Headphone Sockets With ALSA and/or OSS?

I have a surround sound system that uses the green and black 2.5 milimeter jacks for surround sound.  Is it possible to configure ALSA, so that the headphone socket on my laptop produces the front (green) output, and the external microphone socket produces the rear (black) output?  Also, is this possible with OSS?
Last edited by Wintervenom (2009-09-04 21:17:54)

Possible in Alsa, yes. Quite a bit of modification of your .asoundrc. Check this out.

  • I am using ALSA and Icecat. When I play any html5 audio/video it works, but the next time i click on another audio/video link I lose sound.

I am using Parabola (a fork of archlinux), Icecat 31.4 and ALSA
Icecat and firefox seem to hold onto the soundcard when I click on a new html5 audio/video link in the same tab. The next video/audio element loses sound. If I wait 10 seconds and click back to the start of the audio/video, the audio returns. I often get cpu spikes for icecat when it happens.
I have tried this with both motherboard and usb sound and I get the same problem. I have disabled extensions (addons) in Icecat, deleted profiles, reinstalled the browser and even installed firefox from the AUR and it still occurs.
I have disable gstreamer in about:config and restarted and it still occurs.
    My .asoundrc is this:
    pcm.!default {
    type plug
    slave.pcm "hw:0,0"
All my other audio applications work. I have noticed that if I use pulseaudio it fixes it, but it should work without anyway, like it used to. I think something happened after an update, but I'm not sure.
Any help would be appreciated. I know it's not a big problem, but it's really frustrating and I've had it for ages. I even switched browsers to get away from it.

  • [SOLVED] Switching back to ALSA from OSS

    Good day fellow Archites,
I am trying to get my audio working after another fresh install (I am getting good at this).
The pertinent hardware is as follows:
    Mobo: ASUS P5G41T-M LX PLUS
    Sound: Onboard (Realtek ALC887 Chipset)
The sound did not work after getting Arch to a good point (ie having KDE installed and pretty much everything else working).
Arch however did detect the audio hardware, I just had no sound. I followed every wiki I could find on this and still no luck
So I switched to OSS because I saw that Realtek seems to be a proponent of OSS, this didn't work very well and it didn't detect my audio card at all after this. (KDE/Phonon is prompting me to remove the previously installed hardware - I didn't do it)
Promptly I tried to switch back. I think this is where I messed up.
I couldn't find any sort of guide on switching from OSS back to ALSA, so I simply used "pacman -Rdds oss" hoping it would reverse the blacklisting process that it does to ALSA.
After a reboot, KDE still prompted me still to remove the previously detected hardware because it is no longer there, meaning UDev isn't detecting it (I think).
So my big question, how do I go from OSS back to ALSA properly?
How do I re-enable the ALSA modules that are loaded on Arch boot?
I have nothing in /etc/modprobe.d - there are no blacklisting files/configurations at all and I am at a loss.
Thank you my nerdy genius's, or would it be genuii?

That makes no sense - provide more detail.
E.g. you would expect files like:
    /lib/modules/3.2.5/kernel/sound/pci/hda/snd-hda-codec-analog.ko
    /lib/modules/3.2.5/kernel/sound/pci/hda/snd-hda-intel.ko
    /lib/modules/3.2.5/kernel/sound/pci/hda/snd-hda-codec.ko
    /lib/modules/3.2.5/kernel/sound/pci/hda/snd-hda-codec-realtek.ko
    /lib/modules/3.2.5/kernel/sound/acore/snd-timer.ko
    /lib/modules/3.2.5/kernel/sound/acore/snd-page-alloc.ko
    /lib/modules/3.2.5/kernel/sound/acore/seq/snd-seq.ko
    /lib/modules/3.2.5/kernel/sound/acore/seq/snd-seq-device.ko
    /lib/modules/3.2.5/kernel/sound/acore/snd-hwdep.ko
    /lib/modules/3.2.5/kernel/sound/acore/snd-pcm.ko
    /lib/modules/3.2.5/kernel/sound/acore/snd.ko
So what would the 2nd asterix be additionally matching on?
The 2nd asterisk returns a bunch of .gz files
See below, I just posted the whole thing.
I will post the output of all 4 commands.
