ALSA Speakers Setting? (Audi

Hi, (please don't tl;dr)
Perhaps it's the combination of my speakers and the Audigy card, but my setup has this unique problem where the sound from my speakers is nearly bassless and low on volume upon boot. In Windows, this is easily fixed by running the Creative Audio Console, flipping over to the Speakers setting, and change selection from whatever it is (usually 4.) to 2., and back (though it is optional since, at this point, the difference between leaving it at 2. and changing it back to 4. or higher is subtle). This would, for reasons beyond me, fully activate my speakers, bringing them to full volume (bass is most noticeable). This setting is synchronized with the Control Panel sound setting, as indicated by a checkbox option on the page.
I am looking for a similar setting in Linux. I tried looking around alsamixer, but I couldn't really find the switch.
I'm also curious why this happens in the first place. I have an Altec Lansing ADA885 plugged into the Audigy through digital out. It should be noted that the above problem only exists when digital out is activated.
Any help is appreciated, thanks!

  • HELP on "aftermarket" speakers sets

I have a standard emac 700mhz. Looking for a Mac looking/compatiable speakers set. Im a newbie and have a mac specialist that can help with an new audio card if need. PLEASE HELP w/ links, or suggestions AND YOU WILL MAKE MY MONTH
    Thanks

    Drew Key,
Don't let anyone sell you a new audio card for an eMac, even if they do offer to throw in some prime Florida waterfront real estate. The audo in the eMac, like the video, is a "card" only as a matter of naming convention; the actual hardware is a chipset soldered to the logic board.
You can spend anywhere from US$7 to over US$350 on external speakers for you eMac, depending on just how discerning your hearing is. I suspect the really high-end speakers are overkill for the amount of power the eMac audio port provides, but you can find JBL Creature Speakers in the Apple Store link at the top of the Discussions pages for US$100; browse around the Store after searching "speakers" as see which of the links (currently 99) match the criteria of (a) striking your fancy for looks, (b) are within the price range you have in mind, and (c) aren't for the iPod.

  • ITunes 7 new remote speakers setting ? What is it ?

  • Xfce4-mixer doesn't unmute alsa after setting volume to 0% and back up

    Hey guys,
I'm no newbie to Arch, so maybe I just need some cold water in my face because I'm overlooking something obvious.. Yesterday I did a complete re-install from an arch bootstrap script and got everything running just the way I want again - except for one thing.
I am running Xfce as my DE with the xfce4-mixer applet in the tray to control the Master channel's volume using the mouse scroll wheel. This always used to work fine for me. Alsa is up and running and I get sound. The only thing is that when I completely turn down the volume by scrolling down over the speaker icon in the tray (because my phone rings for instance) and then scroll it back up again, alsa somehow seems stuck in mute mode. I have to open a terminal window and use alsamixer each time to unmute the volume again .
This seems like strange behavior on the part of xfce-mixer to me, and it is not something I have encountered before. Anyone have some tips or tricks to fix this weirdness?
    Thanks,
    welpert

lucke wrote:Maybe you can mute and unmute with middle click? It works in some mixers.
Alas, no luck.. But scrolling up from 'muted' should have the same effect as middle-clicking, at least I assume both actions activate the same unmute function somewhere in the code..
EDIT: For now I'm going to use volwheel. But.. please don't hesitate if you know the answer bacause I like xfce4-mixer's simplicity.

  • ALSA: Setting default device (Not card, but device)

    This seems to be a riddle that nobody can solve;
    - The system only has one card by the name of 'Intel'
    - That card is the regular 6 3.5mm jack soundcard.
    - I have a mic plugged into the red microphone plug
    - I open up Audacity and go to preferences, there are two microphone plugs, 'hw:0,0' and 'hw:0,2'
    - I have no idea where 0,0 is and it doesnt make any sound, I plugged the mic into every plug on the board and nothing records.
    - i can set Audacity to use 0,2 and then it will record my voice just fine
When I open up xfce's mixer I see that there are two mic plugs:
Apparently "Front Mic" is the device that is hw:0,0 right now/
Now when I play Savage2 I don't have an option to choose the device, I can choose the soundcard but that doesn't help. How do I set the default Device so that the game uses hw:0,2 in push-to-talk?

    from the alsa archwiki:
    "Setting the default Microphone/Capture Device
Some applications (Pidgin, Adobe Flash) do not provide an option to change the capture device. It becomes an issue if your microphone is on a separate device (i.e. USB webcam or microphone) than your internal sound card. To change only the default capture device, leaving the default playback device as is, you can modify your ~/.asoundrc file to include the following:
    pcm.usb
        type hw
        card U0x46d0x81d
    pcm.!default
        type asym
        playback.pcm
            type plug
            slave.pcm "dmix"
        capture.pcm
            type plug
            slave.pcm "usb"
Replace "U0x46d0x81d" with your capture device's card name in ALSA. You can use 'arecord -L' to list all the capture devices detected by ALSA."
EDIT: maybe i didn't read your post well enough.. im just guessing here but maybe you can replace card U0x46d0x81d with
    device name_of_device..
    maybe..

  • 3 set of speakers

I have a bit of a strange one I think.
I have a set of speakers set up in our bathroom, hard wired
Another set in the living room wireless. And I want to set up a third in
My workshop. Now I am thing of making all sets wireless can I then have the music from my iMac play through all 3 sets at the same time? I would be using an express at each one. I hope this makes sense
    iBook12" G4, 'Minimac superdrive G4, intel iMac 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   all have 1 gig ram

Theoretically yes this should work. iTunes supports playing audio through multiple AX's simultaneously. However, you might run in to problems...
I tried the same thing with a Linksys as my main router and I couldn't make the connection to my AX. The difference is that when streaming to multiple AXs, iTunes sets up UDP connections verses a TCP connection when streaming to only one. For some reason my Linksys was not able to maintain that connection with the AX. I ended up have to get an AEBS as my main router. It probably would have worked if I swapped out the Linksys for another AX.
The best thing you can do is test it out and see if it works with your model of 3com. If you only have 1 AX right now, you can test it by using your iMac and the AX as the multiple speakers. The result should be the same with multiple AXs.
    Good luck!

  • [ALSA] surround 5.1 not working on Acer Aspire 8943G

My laptop Acer 8943G has a ALC670 Realtek chip.
And it has built-in Dolby Home Theater 5.1 Cinematic Surround.
My problem is that I can't bring all the 5 speakers + subwoofer to work.
    I'm using gnome3 (gnome-shell). In pulseaudio I see only surround 4.0, so speaker-test -Dsurround40 -c4 is working great and -Dsurround51 -c4 too but not with -c6:
    [_artem_@linux-void ~]$ speaker-test -Dsurround40 -c4 -twav
    speaker-test 1.0.24.2
    Playback device is surround40
    Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 4 channels
    WAV file(s)
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 32 to 8192
Period size range from 16 to 4096
    Using max buffer size 8192
    Periods = 4
    was set period_size = 2048
    was set buffer_size = 8192
    0 - Front Left
    1 - Front Right
    3 - Rear Right
    2 - Rear Left
    Time per period = 5.717822
    0 - Front Left
    ^C
    [_artem_@linux-void ~]$ speaker-test -Dsurround51 -c6 -twav
    speaker-test 1.0.24.2
    Playback device is surround51
    Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 6 channels
    WAV file(s)
Channels count (6) not available for playbacks: Invalid argument
Setting of hwparams failed: Invalid argument
    [_artem_@linux-void ~]$
as pulse audio has no 5.1 profile for my hardware I decided to remove it completely, so I did.
now I have just alsa: speaker-test -D default -c6 -twav gives sound only on front-left, front-right, but it gives no error on hwparams
Yesterday on pulseaudio I got speaker-test -c6 -twav to give sound on all the speakers including LFE (subwoofer).
But that worked only with speaker-test, sound settings of gnome still gave me 4.0 profile where I could test only 4 channels.
That's why I wanted to play all the sounds directly through alsa without pulseaudio.
    here is alsa-info
    http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=4467f … 7f061397cb
    here is alsamixer:
it has no options for channels, only FRONT (left-right) and SURROUND (left-right) no other controls, no  LFE, no CENTER, nothing.

I read already almost all the manuals but can't get it working, I played with default.pa, daemon.conf (both with pulseaudio) + .asoundrc
now since I delited pulseaudio completely, I tried everything with .asound + /etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf (setting default card, manual setting the model) but nothing works.
I hope you can help me, because I have no idea what to do next

    [_artem_@linux-void ~]$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf
    #options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-6ch
    options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-6ch-dig

here is how the uncommented model looks like in alsamixer:
so I now have CENTER and LFE that are missing in the default alsa config (screenshot in first post)...
    but speaker-test
    [_artem_@linux-void ~]$ speaker-test -Dsurround51 -c6 -twav
    speaker-test 1.0.24.2
    Playback device is surround51
    Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 6 channels
    WAV file(s)
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 64 to 5440
Period size range from 32 to 2720
    Using max buffer size 5440

    1 - Front Right
    3 - Rear Right #silent
    2 - Rear Left #silent
    5 - LFE #silent
    Time per period = 8.522361
rear left and rear right are always silent on model=3stack-6ch-dig even if I pass to the speaker-test -c4, on another model=*** with -c4 I could here all 4 speakers, but on -c6 only front left and front right (weird because they work on -c4 but on -c6 they are silent...)
if I set in alsamixer Channel Mode to 2 instead of 6, the above command gives me hwparameter error, so it's correcter than before because it can't play 6 channel on a "set to 2 channels hardware".
but I don't still know how to get "center", "rear-*" and "lfe" to give sound.
Maybe you know another models (names) that I can try. I have googled on alc670 alsa models but can't find anything related... one thing (saw in a patch diff that it's quiet "equal" to alc622 and alc272 that's why I tried all the models from above. and some of them are at least visually correcter than the default alsa detection: I mean they give me the correct parts (lfe, center), default one gives only Front and Surround).
p.s. I recompiled kernel with alsa support other ways I wasn't able to compile alsa-driver manually and had no cards to try different model options, because there was no kernel module for snd-hda-intel...

  • Bose USB Speakers detection iffy

I have bose companion 5 speakers (usb) that i have plugged into my desktop (Arch 64bit). Alsa is set up and configured so that they always will become the default card - if they get are detected by the OS. I'd say its a 40-50% chance that something happens on boot that they are not detected - maybe the usb connection doesn't settle in time? I've tried added sleeps in my init files - that does no good.
Is there a way to FORCE the system to wait for the speakers to be detected - or better yet (what happens if i remove them, i dont want the system to hang) redect them once the system has been fully booted?

    Follow up:
    After running cat /proc/asound/cards
    0 [Generic ] HDA-Intel - HD-Audio Generic
    HD-Audio Generic at 0xe0120000 irq 34
    1 [Audio ] USB-Audio - Bose USB Audio
Bose Corporation Bose USB Audio at usb-0000:00:1a.0-1.1, full speed
I noticed that the audio card that I wanted to use was in position 1 (USB-Audio)
    I ammended /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf
    defaults.ctl.card 1
    defaults.pcm.card 1
I then tried to play the test file again, aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono
However, I still cannot get any sound from my Bose USB Speakers...
Any advice would be very gratefully  received

  • How to use airplay speakers in multi-output device without crackling audio?

    Hi,
I would like to mirror the audio output from my mac mini to the built-in output and an airplay speaker.
Therefore I added a Multi-Output Device containing  the Built-in- and Airplay output, as soon as I activate the airplay speaker the sound is mirrored but unfortunately always with a crackling sound coming of the speakers set as "slave Device"... only the Device set as "Master Device" has clear sound, doesn't matter if it's the airplay speaker or the speaker (or headphone) directly connected to the built-in output.
I've tested this with a mac mini and an mac book air as audio source, same problem. Both were running Mac OS V. 10.9.2.
Does anyone have an idea what I'm doing wrong?
    Greets
    Chris

I'm using a 2011 Macbook Pro running Mavericks and current Apple TV (MD199HK/A 3rd generation) when trying to output audio to both Apple TV and built-in output simultaneously I suffer crackling and popping. I have this issue once I use Audio MIDI Setup (under utilities) to create a Multi-Output Devise. Once I use this multi-output devise made up of Apple TV and Built-In Output to get my music to both output devises at once BUT I get crackling sound on either Spotify or iTunes.
I've worked around this issue by using AirParrot. I select Apple TV in AirParrot with Audio enabled. The Apple TV then takes all audio output, then I select the 'Multi-Output Devise created in 'Audio MIDI Setup' and I have playback through Apple TV and Built-In Output without any crackling or popping.
Only minor outstanding issue is that whatever scenario I then run Audio Midi Setup in terms of setting various devises as Master Clock and resampling of sub devise I can't perfect the sync between Apple TV audio output and my local Macbook Pro, but close enough with the slightest hint of echo. Plenty of forums discussing Word Clock sync which is out of my league. Un-ticking drift correction on the 'AirParrot' audio output has them close enough, depends on how easily you can hear your apple TV output from the room where your Macbook Pro is and vice versa.

  • Audio output to Speakers

I have been using the mac for quite some time with a logitech 2.1 speaker system. Use was fine for a considerable amount of time, until one day I noticed there was no sound going to left speaker. I have checked the balance for line out in System Preferences > Sound and it is in the middle. I have tried with other speakers and earphone, and they all output to only one speaker. These same speakers and earphone work fine with other devices (iPod, PC).
Furthermore, when I remove the audio out plug, the internal speakers work on both left and right channel.
Anyone have any ideas what might be causing this, or how to solve the problem without a service? Has this happended to anyone else?
    iMac G5 2.0ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   1GB ram.

try going to utilities/audio midi setup and go to configure speakers.
you might have both speakers set to channel 1 or 2. Also try meesing around with 2ch-16 bit and 2ch-24 bit options.

Hi there,?It's a problem that many (if not everyone) people have. I also have the Xtreme Music card and Vista 32 bit XFI, and have the same problem. There's a lot on it on the forums, so maybe you should read on. So far I haven't been able to find a decent fix, but hopefully Creative will do something about it. Sorry,?

  • VERY BAD SOUND: MacBook Pro (unibody) with external JBL Creature speakers

Recently I've bought myself a brand new Mac Book Pro. I'm very happy with my new laptop, but I can't say that about the audio-output quality my new MacBook Pro delivers in combination with my existing external JBL Creature speaker set. In the recent past this speaker set was attached to my old iMac 17" flat, which delivered supreme music quality, but now in combination with my by far more superiour new MacBook Pro, the music sounds very disturbed with a background noise and it seems that the speakers do get to much power/signal - but still the music sounds very far away and the more I pump the volume the worse gets the music output (i.e. more noise is coming out of the speaker) and the right channel seems to have less power (or output). Now I've disconnected my JBL Creature speakers set as from time to time also static ticks are loudly to be heard when just connected whilst I don't do anything with my MacBook Pro.
Can anyone tell me whether this is a problem of the audio-design of the new MacBook Pro (aluminium unibody) and if so is there a solution for to by-pass or overcome this very annoying problem.
Many thanks in advance for your support!

It is true that the audio quality is a total crap, the audio card seems to be "Realtek" and yes it is ****, I am really ****** cause it is not a cheap computer and I have always used mac too and I am really disapointed. I just can't believe that Apple has passed by the audio quality that is so carefully observed in the ipod products. I have been blessed (no, it is really a curse) with a very sensitive unhuman high frequency hearing and my ears really hurt when I use the earphones with the Macbook notPro and I use it at low volume. You can even hear when the sound system goes off when no sound is played for a little while and the when a sound is played goes on and the noise begins. Also you can hear strange whistles and sissings wich are not continuous but the main amp noise is there. This kind of noise is produced by bad quality, low eficiency amplifiers or other factors I do not know. But I have tested several realtek integrated cards and the all are pure crap or less than crap.
    Ok bye, bye.

  • External speakers on HP Pavilion P6204Y stopped working

Speakers work on another PC, upgraded driver, show that speakers are not plugged in-sometimes show as plugged in, ran all the tests shown on the PC, shows volume thru speakers but no sound. Tried CD, internet radio and TV no luck.
Not a computer whiz any help greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
What speakers are you trying to use?
Plug the speakers in and then go to the Realtek Sound Control Panel. Are the speakers set as the default audio output device?  Is the back audio input port a dark green? If no, then try wiggling the cable and see if the speakers show up.
When the speakers show as being plugged in, do you also have a headset plugged in?

  • Need help connecting speakers to soundcard

I need to know what cable/s to connect from my Audigy2 Value to my Creative Inspire 5.1 Digital 5600 speakers. When running the Creative Speaker Settings app, I can never hear the center speaker or subwoofer.
Can anyone tell me what I need to connect, where? Also, what settings should I have my speakers set to?

    apackard,
Signal coming from the headphone jack is only Stereo and is normal that you have only front L/R output only. You can check out the Creative DDTS-100 decoder that may suit your need in this area. With the decoder, it had the feature of Dolby Pro Logic II. This feature enable Stereo program to be upmix to 5.1 effect as what you wanted. You can check the decoder for more info at
