  • I'd love to get an imac but is there a way to upgrade the sound card?

I love the new imac's.. but I would need to upgrade the sound card if I got one. I have a recording studio and i'm using a delta 1010 pci card that is compatible with macs.. I can't see how it would work with an imac.. I'm also a graphic artist and use a mac for all my graphics but it's an old g4 that isn't exactly up to the task of running my studio as well.. I'm sick and tired of my crappy pc giving me grief in the studio and an imac seems like the perfect and affordable price for me.. (i definately need an intel mac so i can run boot camp or parrallels to run a few programs that aren't available on a mac... **** you adobe audition)
does any know if there's any way this will work or do i have to save my pennies for a g5 desktop? (i kinda hope not because it will take me a LONG time to do that)

ahhh.. that's what i thought.. just was hoping I was wrong. Getting a new interface is NOT an option because I just got the system I have and am extremly happy with it... I used to work with a firepod but wasn't all that impressed... I like the 1010 because it gives me more options (mixing analogue and whatnot)
thank you very much for the advice
don't have one yet   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

  • Alsa upgrade: sound only from one app [Solved]

    Hello,
after upgrade to alsa 1.0.21 only one application can play sound. E.g. if MPD (using ALSA output) plays then any ather application (mplayer for example) cannot. Here's mplayer output:
[AO OSS] audio_setup: Can't open audio device /dev/dsp: Device or resource busy
[AO_ALSA] alsa-lib: conf.c:4626:(snd_config_expand) Expand error (walk): File exists
[AO_ALSA] alsa-lib: pcm_hw.c:1325:(snd_pcm_hw_open) open /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p failed: Device or resource busy
[AO_ALSA] Playback open error: Device or resource busy
    [JACK] cannot open server
[AO SDL] Samplerate: 44100Hz Channels: Stereo Format s16le
[AO_ALSA] alsa-lib: conf.c:4626:(snd_config_expand) Expand error (walk): File exists
[AO_ALSA] alsa-lib: pcm_hw.c:1325:(snd_pcm_hw_open) open /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p failed: Device or resource busy
I've downloaded and compiled older alsa-{lib,utils} 1.0.20 from ABS. Now's everything fine.

I had a similar issue with MPD blocking sound on ac97. Commenting out optional decelerations under audio_output in /etc/mpd.conf fixed it.
    /etc/mpd.conf wrote:audio_output {

  • [Solved] Latest Upgrade - No Sound - Ensoniq

    Hi everybody,
I just updated/upgraded and now have no sound.
The first sign was amarok showing a popup stating that "xine was unable to initialize any audio drivers."
I have an ensoniq sound card (motherboard integrated)
    lspci:
00:08.0 Multimedia audio controller: Ensoniq 5880 AudioPCI (rev 04)
I checked Pacman for drivers etc, but didn't come up with anything.
I was using alsa and amixer to configure sound before, now alsamixer opens but is blank. When I click anything it just closes.
Searched the forums and read this thread:
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=46640
    Still no go.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Ok, I reinstalled Amarokand Alsa., then rebooted and sound is back. Must be an Amarok thing.

  • [solved] After sytem update ALSA only plays sound for root

Hello. Yesterday I performed a system update as usual, and after rebooting I found that my user account does not have any sound anymore. Root has sound just fine. I checked and my user is still in the audio group. I even removed him from the group, added him again, and rebooted but it did not help.
I get these error messages in a terminal:
    mplayer:
alsa-lib: pcm_dmix.c:989:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to create IPC semaphore
    speaker-test:
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:989:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to create IPC semaphore
    Playback open error: -13,Permission denied
Running these with a sudo works 100% fine. Alsamixer levels for my user are normal too.
    WORKAROUND: Restart timidity service.
SOLUTION: Do not run timidity as a service in the first place.

    Thanks for replying.
My root user actually doesn't play sound, I just tried to play some for testing purpose after my normal user suddenly just had silence.
Unfortunately those IPC-changes did not help. However, I removed my /etc/asound.conf file completely for testing purpose and voila, sound suddenly works again. So it seems the last update changed something that does not accept my asound configuration anymore. I will try to experiment a bit with its contents to further narrow it down.
    Ok, this is strange
    I commented out an entry
      period_time 0
and after that my user had sound again. Then I restored that entry and...sound still works.
I will pretend I didn't see anything and just move along I guess.

  • After 10.9.3 upgrade no sound on digital/optical port

    Hello All,
I have a problem with my Mini (Early 2009, 2GHz Core2Duo). After recent Mavericks upgrade to 10.9.3, sound through digital optical output port dissapeared.
    1. I checked receiver's input, works with other devices on the same cable.
    2. Cable output light is red (as always, seem Mac Mini transmitter works???)
    3. Mavericks says that optical wire is connected to the port, in sound preferences there is digital/optical output available.
    4. Speaker icon on Top Bar is greyed out and volume slider unavailable to adjust.
    5. PRAM/NVRAM reset didn't help.
    6. Receiver doesn't recognise signal because input led says Analog, normally Digital should be there.
    Maybe this is a bug?
    Please help.
    Regards,
    Kamil

    Hey Guys,
After recent SMC+EFI update on Macbook Air (Mid 2013) OSX v10.9.3, my internal audio device disappeared,
I tried everything I could find in google with no luck. (NPRAM+SMC reset, reloading kents etc.)
THIS IS WHAT SOLVED THE PROBLEM FOR ME:
    1. I opened /System/Library/Extensions folder, there I found besides the usual AppleHDA.kext, also an AppleHDA.kext.disabled one.
    2. I switched between them (swapped their names, sometimes you'll have to do it from the "get info" menu to take effect)
-- if you don't have this AppleHDA.kext.disabled one, try searching for one lil older than yours in the internet
    3. then I unloaded and reloaded the kent dir again-
    sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext
    sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext
    And voila!
Hope it helps someone, as I spent hours until getting this to work again

  • IOS 4.x Upgrade breaks sound and video playback

Been fighting this issue for a while and I've hit a brick wall.
Apparently upgrading a 2nd generation Touch to IOS 4.2.1 has broken audio and video play back.  My Touch will not play any sounds, music files, or videos, and it locks up when an alarm goes off.
Thinking I could downgrade, I went through the motions of downloading a 3.x version of IOS as well as a copy of Tiny Umbrella.  The problem I have is to downgrade you have to save the SHSH blob (a software hash that identifies your device by chipset).  Supposedly a service called Cydia has SHSH blobs for iPhones and some iPod Touch devices, but there is no SHSH blob for my touch.  The bottom line is, I'm stuck.  My Touch is BROKEN, and Apple did it.
So now the question is, will Apple fix this, or are they going to kick older Touch users to the curb?  Personally I think a class action suit is in order.
Apple....  Are you listening?  I sure hope so, but looking at their past performance in customer support, I seriously doubt they give a hoot.

Sending a message via feedback was next on my list.  It really is a shame that Apple is so paranoid and arrogant they can't give users a way to go back to a known good OS.
There may be a lot of MS bashing going on, but as a former MS employee, I can say that MS always gives users a way to clean up after a bad install.   I know this to be true because I worked in Desktop Systems as a Customer Support rep. and my area of concentration was Setup and Install.
I've been building my own desktop PCs since the first IBM clones hit the streets, and this episode with IOS 4.x gives me one more reason stick with what works and leave Apple's stuff alone.....

  • [Solved] No sound with ALSA (change default sound card)

I installed Arch on another laptop and I am unable to get sound working.
    # lspci | grep -i audio
00:01.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Device 9840
00:14.2 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] FCH Azalia Controller (rev 02)
Two devices show up in alsamixer. The first (the default, I assume) shows up only an S/PDIF button that I can toggle. If I select the other sound card, I can change volume normally.
I followed this solution in the wiki with no success.
How can I make the second sound card the default one?

Yes, that is what I meant; F6 did not list them both when I use your options. I must have done something wrong the first time, because now it does.

  • Post Yosemite upgrade: crackling sound appears

    Hello All,
I have a Late 2013 13" Macbook Pro Retina. I just upgraded to Yosemite from Mavericks and have noticed this crackling sound coming from the laptop even if nothing is running. I am quite positive it never made this noise before. Has anyone else noticed this; is this something I should be worried about?

I noticed the exact same thing. Sound comes from the left side, probably under the Caps Lock key.
I have nothing running except Chrome and it won't stop crackling, as if it were an old laptop struggling to run an application. I checked the activity monitor and my RAM usage seems fine (if I'm not mistaken, though the memory used at 5.77 GB seems a bit high?)

  • OSS/ALSA or Open Sound System/ Advanced Linux Sound Architecture?

I want to move/rename the articles in the wiki to their full names but they are commonly referred to by their shorter names even though the longer names would improve clarity. I've been cleaning up redirections in the wiki anyway so it would be too much of a bother to add a few more things to my list of redirections to clean up. Thoughts?

ngoonee wrote:Why not have OSS redirect to Open Sound System and similarly for alsa? Though I think that's what you're suggesting.. in that case, go for it
Can not agree more.  This will definitely be easier for a user to find the article and also improve clarity.

  • ALSA 5.1 Sound problem...

I'm using mpd (Music Player Deamon) at the moment to listen to my music collection, and although ALSA works without a hitch, I wanted to have sound on all my speakers for normal stereo sources.
In my ~/.asoundrc file I added add the following (as per instruction on the ALSA website)
    pcm.duplicate {
    type plug
    slave.pcm "surround51"
    slave.channels 6
    route_policy duplicate
After that I set the ALSA device used for mpd to duplicate.
For mpd it's in /etc/mpd.conf under the audio_ouput section.
    I added
    device "duplicate"
Although this works, it seems to mess up the hardware mixing on my sound card (an AC97 variant). If I use the normal "surround51″ device, all is well.
Any ideas how I, or if, I can solve this?

I've found the solution. Thought I'd share.
First things first, make sure you have JACK installed. Then, edit your ~/.asoundrc file to look like this
    ctl.jack51 {
    type hw
    card 0
    pcm.jack51 {
    # "asym" allows for different
    # handling of in/out devices
    type asym
    playback.pcm {
    # route for mmap workaround
    type plug
    slave.pcm "surround51"
    slave.channels 6
    route_policy duplicate
    capture.pcm {
    # 2 channels only
    type hw
    card 0
    Then, start JACK with
    jackd -d alsa -d jack51
(Loading JACK at startup can be done in a variety of ways, depending on how you do things)
I had trouble starting it up as a regular user, but that can be fixed by editing /etc/security/limits.conf (as described in the wiki).
It's nice to have qjackctl installed to control JACK from your desktop environment.
    pacman -S qjackctl
If your app supports JACK output, you're good to go! Simply set it to use JACK.
For MPD, I had to install the SVN 4125 trunk. Download the PKGBUILD and simply edit the version to the newest SVN build (check this on mpd's site). The 4125 release has support for JACK output.
    Then, in /etc/mpd.conf, use this
    audio_output {
    type "jack"
    name "mpd"
Et voila! Surround sound with mixing.

  • G60-458DX Windows 8 upgrade NO SOUND...have tried "everything!"

    Greetings,
I have an older G60-458DX notebook that I upgraded to Windows 8 64-bit.
I have lost sound from both the internal speakers and anything plugged into the headphone jack. I can see levels fluxuate on the taskbar volume control when I move the slider.
I have tried the following with no success amoung other things:
Used Windows troubleshooting feature in Windows 8
Disables and enables the drivers for sound device as well as tried to upgrade the drivers (already the most current)
Checked all sound software access points
Some of the research I read indicated that HP was not going to support older hardware with driver updates for Windows 8. Is there a workaround for this issue? Could I used a USB external soundcard and bi-pass the non-fuctioning drivers?
This is my wife's computer and while she likes Windows 8, she NEEDS SOUND. Thank you!

    Brett,
You are "far and away up the soundless creek" and I offer you a paddle:
Running Drivers and Software in Compatibility Mode by AttackOfZaq
There is a hope this will work to bring sound where there is now silence.
It is possible that it may turn out to be a very small paddle in a very large creek.
    Good Luck!

  • Upgrade kills sound

I upgraded to Leopard 10.5.7. Now I have no sound except the usual startup hum sound. My sound indicator shows that everything is muted, but the mute check box is greyed out and not uncheckable. I have tried system sounds and YouTube videos to see if anything makes noise; no joy.
The time coincidence makes me almost certain that this sudden sound disappearance is related to the upgrade, but that's about where my savvy ends. Any ideas? thanks very much.

This is a very common update issue with G5s and Intel Macs:

Sometimes zapping the PRAM can also help:

If neither helps, you create another user in Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Accounts and login to that user and see if the issue persists there. That would tell you at least if it is a system wide issue, or a user specific issue. Let us know your findings please?
