Alt codes on MBP?

How can I use ALT codes on a boot camped MacBook Pro? (For those of you who may not know, alt codes are, holding ALT and typing 0172 to get a ¬ character, or other combination & characters.)
I've tried ALT-****-Numbers, ALT-FN-Numbers, ALT-Numbers but I can't get it. I tried with an external keyboard too and it still won't. Do I have to enable it anywhere? I don't know Windows too well.

  • How come the "save as" dialog box keeps popping up whenever I try to use alt codes?

I type with diacritical marks regularly but recently, when I press and hold Fn + Alt + the numerical code, it brings up the "save as" dialog box. This seems to be a Firefox-specific issue because this doesn't happen on Microsoft Word + other programs. I am wondering how to disable this "save as" dialog box shortcut, or how to just get the alt codes to work.

Hm, this is the list of add-ons that are currently enabled on my browser:
    <br><br>
Dictionnaire française moderne (it can't be this one because I just installed it today)<br>
    Java Console 6.0.18<br>
    Java Console 6.0.25<br>
    Java Console 6.0.20<br>
    Java Console 6.0.24<br>
pdfit (doesn't seem like it's this one either)<br><br>
Conclusion: might it be one of the Java Consoles?
    Thanks!

  • Problem with ALT codes on Apple Wired Keyboard

May I just note, I have posted this in the "Boot Camp" forum, but run the normal Windows 7 on my computer. I was unable to find a forum purely for Apple hardware.
I am using a Apple Wired Keyboard (MB110B/B) -- British-bought -- on a Windows 7 PC, and I are having some issues with ALT codes. The array of symbols I have to type (pi, sigma, etc) becomes tiresome to insert via the Character Map (on Win7). Basically, entering "alt" (left handside) then 227 does not insert "π" but rather "Ò". alt + 228 (Σ) inserts õ
I don't know if this problem is common for Apple keyboard users on Windows, but is there a way to alter this.
    Thanks, Jordan.

For a third opinion, be cautious of using a dishwasher as the temperature can get pretty high. If the spill is on the 456 on the number pad, you can try holding the keyboard vertically, soak just that part in distilled water for several minutes to disolve the spill material. Run some denatured (rubbing) alcohol over the numpad, then dry with a hair dryer.
You could also try to remove the key caps...slip dental floss under the key caps in two loops, one from the top one from the bottom. Pull the key caps off one at a time, the wipe the area clean...see if there is any material sticking that needs to be cleaned off.
I do not know what keyboard you have or how it does the switching, but most keyboards today do not use mechanical switches. The switches are sealed capacitance switches so if you clean all the material from the keyboard it may work again.
Or, if you don't feel like going to this much trouble, a visit to your friendly Apple Retailer to purchase a new one may be a good idea.

  • Firefox is not displaying alt codes correctly, substituting a black diamond with a white question mark in their place.

Alt codes (such as &#174; for "registered" and &#153; for "trademark") are being displayed as a small black diamond with a white question mark inside of it. This has also started happening to more simple characters such as exclamation marks, dashes and apostrophes.
    Any ideas?

    Thanks for your reply cor-el.
My posting actually included the alt code syntax, and is now rendered as the corresponding special character. I guess this isn't a surprise!
And no, it was rendered just fine. This morning when I went into the browser to see the problem, it was not mis-displaying as it had been...it had somehow changed and was behaving very nicely. That's all fine, but I'm a little bit wary of this FF browser functionality now...steady as she goes.
Also, I did check the (View > Character Encoding) you recommended, and after experimenting a bit discovered that using "Unicode (UTF-8)" made the wierd black diamond/white question mark character come back in all of the same places it was occuring...up until this morning. I've set my browser default to "Western (ISO-8859-1)" now, and everything is displaying as it should.
Thanks for your reply and suggestions. I hope others will learn from these experiences.

  • Alt codes not working

I am trying to use alt codes to input spanish and portuguese characters. My laptop has a keypad so I am pressing ALT+!164, for example, but none of the codes works. What could I do to solve this?
    Thanks!

I don't believe there is a keycode for the ALT key, but you can apparently determine whether or not it is active (Boolean) using theKeyboardEvent.altKey property.  See the following in the help documentation.

  • Alt codes not showing.

I bought a new laptop a few months ago with windows 7, and found right away that with firefox, alt codes/symbols are not displayed properly. They work correctly on other browers, but firefox specifically will not render the characters, showing me spaces instead. For example, code number (&)#10077, which normally displays a quotation mark, only appears as a space. On chrome, it renders perfectly. My firefox is up to date. The problem has spanned all of the versions of firefox installed on this computer, with and without addons, and changing the encoding of the page does nothing to remedy it. Is there a way to correct this behaviour in firefox?

You're quite welcome. As I understand it, once Windows is installed, those fonts no longer serve a purpose. If you need to recover them, you can find them in the '''boot\fonts''' folder of your Windows installation disc.
When I tested, Firefox no longer had this issue starting with version 13, which is slated for release today (it may take a while until it's available as an update though).

  • Alt Codes

    Hi All
I seem to have a problem using normal ASCII alt codes with swing. I think I get the unicode equivalent when I enter them.
Please tell me if there is anything that I can do to change them back to ASCII since it would be ridiculous for me to expect my customers to learn a whole new character map.
I hope to hear from some learnd friend soon.
    Kind regards
    Comlink

    Hi
If not done already, go into System Preferences>International>Input Menu & tick the On box next to Keyboard Viewer, make sure you tick 'Show input menu in menu bar'. A small flag will show up in your menu bar (top right of screen). Click on flag then Show Keyboard Viewer.
A small keyboard will appear in a window &, as you press Cmd, Alt etc, the keys will change to show you what will appear.
    Example - Shift-Alt-K =  & Alt-K = ˚ (degree sign)

  • Alt codes in Swing JTextFields

I Noticed that the alt codes seem to use the utf codes for inserting characters e.g. alt-145 = ? and in windows applications it is 'ae' ( but combined ), Can this be changed.
Some of out users know the most used alt codes and no the have to learn a second set.
Can anybode give me some philosophy behind this implementation.
    Thanks,

    Tried all the Font by

    Font rtadd = new java.awt.Font(fontNames, java.awt.Font.BOLD, 9);

  • Alt codes on ideapad u410

How do I do alt codes on the ideapad u410?

    Thanks, ishaan.
I hadn't seen your post, nor the knowledgebase article.
It works on my Yoga13, yet it's a little awkward to hold down the Alt key on the physical keyboard while tapping the on-screen keypad's numbers to achieve special characters... unless I'm missing some kind of an "Alt lock" function for the on-screen keyboard. In any case, it's certainly better than no capability at all.
    Cheers.

  • I cannot use Unicode alt codes as they cause Firefox's menus to pop up.

Whenever I try to use alphanumeric alt codes that conflict with existing menu shortcuts, (for example Alt+03BC), Firefox's menu keeps popping up (in this case, Bookmarks menu). This does not happen with codes without menu shortcuts, for eg. Alt+263A, or Alt+0024.
How can I get Firefox to ignore shortcuts while I am using alt codes? I would prefer not to disable menu shortcuts entirely.

    It works fine for me...
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
    <b> To Enable SafeMode </b>
*You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
*''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
If it works in Safe Mode and in normal mode with all extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) disabled then try to find which extension is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.
Close and restart Firefox after each change via "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: "Firefox > Quit Firefox"; Linux: "Firefox/File > Quit")

  • What is the Mac equivalent for ALT codes?

I want to type basic fractions. In Windows one uses ALT codes (e.g. ALT+0169 for "1/2"). What do you do in Mac?

This page shows you the solution - the layout of the Character Viewer has changed but the principle is the same.

  • T42 and alt codes problem

I am in the process of writing a biography in English which includes a lot of French words and accents.  I rely a lot on alt-codes for diactritics.  My G575 has its own numeric keypad so alt-codes are no problem but my wife's T42 does not have a separate numeric keypad. Turning the NumLk on and off for every accent she needs is getting rather tedious and so is switching from English to French to English keyboards.
I bought an external USB numeric keypad for the T42.  It enters numbers readily enough but it will not enter alt codes. It also turns on the NumLk on the T42 not just its own.
Is there an answer?  Thanks in advance for all help.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hello,
Since you are running Microsoft Windows XP, you could try enabling the Language Bar.  Once it is enabled, you could select the French and/or French-Canadian keyboard layouts and be able to enter the accented characters, just as if you had a French or French-Canadian keyboard installed.

  • How can I switch the region code on MBP w/ DVD drive for the 5th and final time?

How can I switch the region code on MBP w/ DVD drive for the 5th and final time? It brings up the window with that world map to do it, including the warning that "this is the 5th and final time I can do this", when inserting a DVD and opening "DVD Player", but it never executes my click on the "Change Drive Region" button prompt.
VLC or Quicktime Player won't play it either, but won't bring up that window to change Region Code anyway....
Otherwise, I'm not having any other issues with this MBP at all. Peak performance on all counts :-)
I tried resetting SMC after chatting w/ Apple Support, but it didn't help.
That was the link they provided. Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac
    Tried zapping PRAM as well.
    Thanks for any clues, Rene

Region encoding is the mechanism that enables motion picture studios to control the worldwide release of their movies. It is required by the DVD Forum (http://www.dvdforum.org/forum.shtml) in all commercial hardware DVD players. Every DVD-Video disc contains one byte of data representing a region code, which limits where the disc can be played.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2397
Once you have set the region in DVD Player five times it cannot be changed. However see this also:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA25416?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Instead, use VLC to view videos from different regions:

  • Math ALT Codes in RichTextEditor

I have been using the RichTextEditor and Spanish symbols all seem to work just fine out of the box, like ALT+168 for the upside down ? etc. However, I'm having issues with several math symbols.  Is there a way to enable these alt codes in the RTE somehow?
A few of the symbols I need are:
ALT+232 for the Greek Symbol Phi
ALT+233 for the Greek Symbol Theta
    ALT+236 for the Infinity Symbol
ALT+242 for Greater than or Equal to Symbol
ALT+243 for Less than or Equal to Symbol.
Anyone out there had any experience with this or have any ideas on how to implement these shortcuts within the RTE?
    Thanks,
    Brian

Not really the solution I need.  What I'm looking for is basically the same usability you would get from any
text editor, where a user can be typing/writing out something then whenever they need a special character, just hit ALT+#### and it
will insert the correct symbol.  Asking users to somehow throw in HTML text won't work b/c most of our user base doesn't know HTML.
    Thanks though
