Alt key + double-clicking a layer?

I am reading a tutorial and it instructs me to press the Alt key + double-click the duplicate layer. What is this doing? It seems to be just making a new blank layer.
Thanks.

What duplicate layer?
Do you think a screenshot might help understand what you are talking about?
alt-doubleclicking a Layer in the Layers Panel should raise the Layer Properties-dialog in which the name and color can be changed.

• Lasso tool problem, using alt key, no click within 5sec causes loss of active window focus

I have been using Photoshop since ver. 4 and have never seen this happen. The only difference is now I'm on Windows 7 64bit. Did not have this problem with XP. Current version CS3 Extended.
Problem: While using Lasso tool with the alt key if I do not make a mouse click in 5 seconds Photoshop's active window loses focus for a split second and then the first point of my selection and the last point will connect. Thus, wasting my time and my attempt at a selection.
I have task bar buttons to "Never combine". I see for that split second what appears to be another program button opening but it is so fast that I cannot see if there is a name on the task bar button. The current Photoshop button moves to the right and back too fast. This all happens very quickly as the window loses focus.
I first thought it was some another program but after many searches found nothing I can identify as the cause.
Right before posting this I had a thought and did a test that concluded in the 5 sec rule. For over a minute I held down the alt key and made a mouse click within the 5 second window of time and there was no loss of window focus. While still holding down the alt key in this same test but not making a mouse click within 5 seconds the window lost focus and the tool stopped with my selection.
I have a wireless Logitech M305 mouse that this morning updated the driver to its current version 5.20.51, Control Center version: 6.20.50.
I have not tested a wired mouse, yet.
Any help would be appreciated. Anyone else seen this? Windows 7 64 bit the culprit?????

UPDATE
After I removed Photoshop from Norton 360's Administrative Settings_Silent Mode Settings_User-Specified Programs, I did not have the problem with the lasso tool that I first had with loss of window focus. I then put Photoshop back in the 360's settings and the lasso tool still worked, BUT...............
After a couple of days of not using Photoshop and turning computer on and off in that time, I tried Photoshop again and the same problem, it came back. Loss of focus after 5 seconds of not clicking mouse. So, once again I open Norton and took Photoshop out of the User-Specified Programs and the problem went away, no loss of focus.
So, I will see if after a couple of days of turning on and off the computer and NOT putting Photoshop in the Norton's User-Specified Programs setting if the problem stays fixed.
I don't have to have Photoshop in the Norton's setting I just thought that it would be a good idea so Norton didn't try to do any background processes or whatever while I was working in Photoshop or I was rendering a filter or something.
Another thought I also have the Full Screen Detection setting ON. I do use Photoshop in Full Screen mode so maybe when having both the Full Screen mode and User-Specified Programs setting selected it makes something go wacky.
Hope this helps anyone having the same problem I "did". Will post back after a few days to let you know if focus problem is gone.
If it does relieve the problem then I will leave Photoshop off the list in Norton. No sense in trying to fix something that really doesn't matter, really.
UPDATE 2
January 8, 2011, I tried the lasso tool again and it still appears to be working. I did my standard test of holding the alt key and clicking to make selections then not click for 5 seconds or more and I did not lose window focus. I do not know why the Norton 360 setting triggers the loss of focus but since I turned that setting off I'm not having any problem.
Will update again if something changes.
Anyone else out there with the same problem that was solved using this method?

• Universal Access Mouse Keys Double Click Broken In Lion

Hi,
Lion has made a couple of changes to the Universal Access Mouse Keys, BUT...
You can no longer double click with the 5 key...
This is a HUGE problem for users reliant on this to counter RSI problems.
To reproduce:
In Universal Access, toggle Mouse Keys to 'On'. Open a text document, hover the cursor over a word, and double click using the number pad 5 key.
Prior to Lion this selected the word. In Lion this is no longer happens.
I am using an Apple keyboard with number pad and a MacBookPro.
Please re-instate this functionality.
Regards,
Rob.

This was fixed in 10.7.2 or 3 from memory, but returned in 10.8 and remains in 10.8.2.
I use Keyboard Maestro to map F17 on my keyboard to double-click, Ctrl+F17 to triple-click

• BUG- Alt clicking adjustment layer icons Not giving the opportunity to name the layer in CS6 Beta?

Using Windows 7 Ult, 64-bit:
I notice when I alt-click an adjustment layer icon, the layer automatically drops in with a default name--rather than giving me an opportunity to type a name for the A/L via the "new layer" dialog box. For example, in CS5, when you alt-click on the hue/saturation ajustment layer icon, you are given a dialog box in which you can name the layer, select clipping mask, blend mode, color select, etc--then the layer populates in the composition. In CS6 beta, when I hold the "alt" key and click the adjustment layer icon for hue/sat, I'm not getting the new layer dialog box at all. Is this a bug or a modifier key change in CS6?

It should still work from the layers panel. You have to hold the alt key before going to the adjustments menu at the bottom of the layers panel.
It doesn't seem to work from the adjustments panel unless you use the flyout menu and then you don't have to add the alt key to get the dialog.

• Why does the ALT key disable mouse clicks on some machines?

I have a drawing program, the main Window of which extends JFrame and contains a Canvas, which extends JPanel. The Canvas has a MouseAdapter, KeyAdapter and JMenuBar. It also has a Tools palette, which extends JDialog and has Buttons, which extend JToggleButtons.
One button is called Zoom. After pressing this button, you can Zoom In and Zoom Out by clicking the mouse on a point of the illustration. It differs from pressing Ctrl Plus and Ctrl Minus, because the point where you click is kept in place, and only all the other points move.
Zooming In is done by clicking the mouse and Zooming Out is done by pressing the ALT key and clicking the mouse. The Zooming In works on all computers, but for some strange reason, the Zooming Out doesn't work on all computers. The computer where it doesn't work, after pressing the ALT key and clicking the mouse, it does not recognize the mouse click, and never reaches the mousePressed method in my debugger.
The computer where it doesn't work has the Windows XP Professional operating system. But some computers where it does work have the same operating system. The problem also does not depend on the keyboard or mouse, because I tried a different keyboard and mouse, and it still didn't work.
I wonder if the reason why it doesn't work on some computers has to do with that the ALT key is also used differently (which might depend on the operating system)? Pressing the ALT key and clicking the mouse Zooms In a picture by keeping the point in place and only moving all the other points
I do not want to use a different key, since one release of my program is a plugin for Photoshop, and Photoshop also uses the ALT key to achieve the same thing.
Thanks for checking on this! I will appreciate your help!

Ok, I did apply KeyBindings. Since the AnanyaCurves class extends JFrame, I couldn't apply KeyBindings there, but I could apply KeyBindings to my CurveCanvas class, which extends JPanel, which extends JComponent. However I still have my first two problems:
1) After pressing the ALT key, clicking the mouse doesn't get recognized. You never reach the mousePressed method, where it's supposed to exit the program.
2) After opening a menu, such as the Nothing menu by pressing ALT and N, pressing a key which is not an accelerator key of a menu doesn't get recognized, such as pressing the E key. You never reach the actionPerformed method of the exitF action, where it's supposed to exit the program.
Here is my SSCCE with the KeyBindings:

• Logic 8 crashing when double click on color in the color window

every time I try and create a custom color in the color window by double clicking on a color square logic crashes . Is anyone else seeing this? - sent apple crash report

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

• Updated iPhoto 11 and cannot open Events with double click or any other way. I can only view those photos by creating an album from all of them, then I can open the album and edit or delete etc. Any one have that problem?

After upgrading to iPhoto 11 and the latest upgrade 9.4.1 (701 67) I cannot open any Event. The normal double click does not work, nor anything else I have tried. The only way I can view the photos in an Event is to make an Album of it, and then I can easily open it with a double click and edit and delete, arrange photos etc. Anyone have this problem. Any ideas about how to open an event?

• Why doesn't my alt key work?

In my Photoshop CC, the alt key only duplicates the layer; I can’t use the clone tool or the healing brush. Does anyone know what is going on here?

Or Diane might be trying to use the Spot Healing brush and Clone tools on empty layers without Sample all layers checked. Or working outside an active selection. I expect there are conditions that would cause such behaviour.
Diane, if you are convinced everything is set right, and there is no user error (we all do user error now and again) then you might need to reset the tool from the Preset panel or Options bar. Or if that doesn't help, it might be time to reset Preferences (hold down Shift Ctrl Alt - Shift Cmd Opt while starting Photoshop.)

• Using ALT key in list view doesn't quite work like it used to...

I haven't used this feature since OS9 so please excuse my ignorance!
In OS9 when viewing files in Finder in List view, one used to be able to open subfolders by holding down the ALT key while clicking the folder triangle. Close the main folder and ALT-clicking open again would open a second level of subfolders et cetera.
However, in OS X it appears that ALT-clicking a folder's triangle now opens ALL subfolders in one go (which can hold up the Finder quite a bit if you have a lot of stuff), and ALT-clicking the folder's triangle to CLOSE the folder doesn't close all the subfolders in one go (they are all open within the main folder).

A faster way, which works for me when I have logged out, is to log in, get the Discussions home page and then hit reload, which takes me to the thread I was looking for.
Hope this works for you,the alternative is to keep logged-in in your browser and avoid all this.

• Can't Alt+double click to open an image?

hello: Level: Newbie Id:Cs6 Os:Win8
i have read that Win8 is compatible with Id, Ps and Illy (i'm not sure about the other CC apps but i hope they are too)
however, while following a vid tut by Terry White ~ he directed me to click on an image and to then hold the Alt key while double clicking to open it in full(er) view but when i did this the image opened in Windows Photo Gallery
well, earlier i had gone to Default Programs and set Windows Photo Gallery as the default to open images ~ not knowing it would prevent Id from functioning or that it would override (apparently) everything else (yes, i am pretty new to OS's in general too) i did this b/c when i would go to my Pictures folders and click on an image to view it was opening in some AWEFUL program that depixelated (<is that a word?) /made my pics/images look just terrible.
so, i called Microsoft and the man that was trying to help me said that i had to go to "Associate a File Type or Protocol with a Program" and then i had to choose Each and Every Single File Type (.png, .jpeg, .tiff etc etc) for Each and Every Application (Adobe or not) and "Associate" that File Type with the Application i need for it to open ... um ... caugh caugh ... just a moment .... SCREAM!! uh, what? Really?
Dear goodness ... please say it ain't so!! please?? (lol)
so, is this really the deal? or does anyone else think i may have been directed incorrectly?
i went back to Default Programs to remove Windows Photo Gallery as the Default program but i am not seeing where that is an option.
i totally understand this isn't help for Windows8 forum but IF anyone has experince w/it and is willing/able to help me out i would also greatly appreciate any advice you may be able to lend. i do plan to go run around the net after i'm done here to look for (a needle in a haystack) help in a Win8 forum (yikes & wo is me)
oh, also the (nice) man at Microsoft couldn't tell me if i went ahead and did this rather Windows Photo Gallery would still open my Pictures or not or if it would return to that awful preview program i began with in the 1st place.
this was my very 1st time using InDesign and i would really like to start learning it. does anyone know why i cannot Alt+2's click & then have the image open like it's suppose to? or even how i go about telling Windows8 to please let Id ALSO open the files the way it wants?
sorry for such a long post. i have been through a nightmare episode just ordering my new laptop and now Win8 seems to be creating an entire season
thanx so very much in advance for your time and efforts. i will also continue my quest for answers and should i find 'em i will certainly return to share and post links.

hello peter
thank you so much for asking as i am quite ready to send my laptop back to where it once came
well, as i understand it there is a bug with the AMD Graphics card
when i try to draw a shape, add a new layer, use the alt key to "cut" the line of the pen tool the canvas goes totally black and i cannot use the filters or the 3D tools. also, the bg area behind the canvas changes from dark grey to black to transparent
all of the above are reasons why i saved for 3 yrs to buy a new laptop w/a decent graphics card and it's just totally bum'n me out
if i understand correctly it's an issue between the AMD and Windows 8 ~ so as of now i am thinking i should either send it back or get rid of Win8 and install Win7 but actually now that i think of it i dunno if Win7 will correct the AMD issue or not but i think it would.
at first i thought the issues were Adobe related and not as i seem to have found
my laptop is a Satellite S875-S7376 the gpu is an AMD Radeon HD 7670M, the hard drive is 1TB, i7, and it has 8GB ram, 64bit, Windows 8
i went to AMD's website and if i understand correctly there is a "fix" that is helping somewhat but NOT for Toshiba notebooks, Sony and Panasonic and AMD is no longer releasing updates every month but only when they feel they have good enough reason to do so.
i've been unable to find an idea of when AMD thinks they'll have a fix for Toshiba and i've only got under 2 weeks to return this laptop
i tried to install something called the AMD Catalyst or maybe it's ATI Catalyst Mobility but was told it could not be installed due to incompatible hardware/software on my computer
i just wish i could get back to work and decide what would be the best thing for me to do
i seem to be making some folks upset b/c i keep trying to chase down an answer/solution. for instance i didn't realize that the problem i am having is called Flickering and so i had posted again about it at photoshop.com and was given a lashing about how i was already told this and that.
i was also told that the solution is to just set Photoshop to Basic Draw Mode ... but that is my whole point as i don't want to have to use Ps in Basic mode as the entire idea of investing in a better computer was to be able to enjoy the bells and whistles
if you've got any ideas or you know of a solution or even if you've heard of one rolling on down the road i would greatly appreciate anything at all that you could share with me
sorry if i ramble a bit much i'm just frustrated beyond the point of clarity
thanx again so much for your time & efforts!!

• Alt + click on layer mask not working/enabled

Im wondering if anyone else has come across this problem and managed to solve the issue!
Basically, when I go to view the layer mask by holding alt and clicking on the layer mask it doesn't function. Along with this problem, when I go to toggle my adjustment layers on and off, by holding alt and clicking on the eye symbol next to the background layer... again this doesn't work.
Im not sure if I have accidently clicked on something that has disabled these functions or its just a bug.
Please, can anyone help with this?
Thanks
Dave

Yeah I tried both Alt keys, that wasn't the problem. I could use both Alt keys to do shortcuts and they worked, just didn't work when it came to toggling off and on the adjustment layers and also viewing my mask, when Alt clicking on it.
I even tried opening the file in an older version of photoshop and still had the same problem.
I was about to re-install the program or reset it back to its default settings... then decided to do a selection of the image, cut it out and pasted it into a new document and then dragged my adjusment layers over to the new file. Hey presto! the functions worked.
Think it was just a case of the image or file in general becoming corrupt or just having some sort of bug.

• With Mavericks I have to hold command key down and double click to get a sub folder to open in a new window. Can I go back to just double clicking ?

With Mavericks I have to hold command key down and double click to get a sub folder to open in a new window. Can I go back to just double clicking ?

Of course. To do it, open a Finder window, go to Finder menu (on the menu bar) > Preferences > General, and untick "Open folders in tabs instead of new windows".

• Edit original (alt + double click) opens in an old version of CS

I have been using the alt + double click to open Illustrator files that I have placed in my InDesign document for months with no problems. When I alt + double click the placed image, it has always opened up in the latest version of Illustrator - CS5.5. However, starting about two days ago, it now attempts to open the file in an older version - CS 5.0. I am sure that the Illustrator files and the InDesign document were both created with the latest version of CS.
Is there any way to set the preference for the alt+double click to target the latest version again?
Thanks,
Paul

Eugene,
You and Bob are correct. There is no CS5.5 (for Illustrator). I sincerely apologize for inflating my latest Illustrator version by 0.4 points. I purchased the "CS5.5 master suite upgrade" and when I look in the CS 5.5 folder I see Illustrator CS5.1. Illustrator 5.5 or 5.1 - either way, I'm referring to the latest version of the software.
I'm not "worrying" about anything. All I wanted was a possible solution that would allow me to once again use the alt+double click to open and edit my Illustrator files in my latest version of Illustrator, not the previous version. Given that I have deactived the previous version, it makes it difficult to edit the file when it asks me to install CS5 again. Even if I hadn't deactivated it, I still would prefer to have the file open in the latest version, considering it had been doing that for the past two months before it suddenly stopped. I'm sorry that I was rude. It's just that "You are worrying about nothing" really isn't something that I can change in my preference setting to enable the alt+double click to work again.

• Seems like my Control or Alt keys are "on" after browsing with Firefox and I have to control-click or alt-click on the desktop to set things back to normal

After a browsing session using Firefox, my system behaves like either the Contol key or Alt key is stuck "on". For example if I start clicking icons on my desktop, each one is highlighted and "added" as if I were holding down the control key while clicking on each one (thus selecting all the icons). If I physically press the control key and click, then click again without the control key down, the system then behaves as normal.

Use "Firefox/File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit") to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the title bar.
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
