ALT Startup will not work any longer, PRAM reset will not work any longer.

Hi folks,
I just bought and plugged in my Mac Pro to a new Belkin battery back up unit yesterday, and now when I try to restart using the ALT key it will not work, it starts up to my default drive only. When I try to reset the PRAM, using the option-command P-R keys it also boots to the default drive.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Jim

Troubleshooting is sortof voodoo, if you do "a" and get response "b" then don't do it!
There have been other problems, USB hub, cable, etc.
OS X doesn't "need" PowerChute which also hasn't been updated in two years and can cause problems. APC works. APC's software for Windows is excellent though. Shame.
As for why... I'll leave that for philosophy class.
Wired keyboard? check. 1000VA or above? check. Any UPS also can have a strong EMF field around it that I guess could affect other electronics (cell phones etc and AC adapters have been known to cause problems and RFI).

    Hi Melissa,
    Pretty strange, but...
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, does it happen in Safe Mode? Reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • Hello, my backspace and enter keys suddenly stopped working. I have done a PRAM reset and used the keyboard viewer to see if the buttons work and they don't.  The PRAM reset didn't work  either

Dear All,  the backspace and enter keys on my wireless keyboard suddenly stopped working.  Im using OS 10.7.5 and have tried a PRAM reset which didn't work.  I also used the keyboard viewer to see if the keys worked on that but they don't.  This is driving me mad, can anyone please tell me what to do?  It happened just after an update but this could be a coincidence.  Thank you for your time

For my computers, though some of them support BlueTooth devices and accessories,
my preference and economy of standard, is to have wired USB and also use powered
    USB hubs for accessories.
I've used USB wired keyboards and mouse products; and some I've bought from the
    original owners who had upgraded to BT, and never used the new Apple USB model;
so I have spares of these on-hand since they seldom fail, but do work when BT won't.
    {A SMC reset should not cause a problem, or seldom has; but can solve some.}
In my opinion, the wired USB keyboard is an essential accessory, if not a necessary
primary means of user access on a continuous basis. At least until the wires fail...!

  • My screen will not respond and i tried resetting, still doesnt work.

The screen is simply unresponsive, Siri operates and hears me if I hold down the home button. I tried a hard reset many times. I cannot turn off my iPhone 4s because you have to slide it off. I receive not ifications.. Everything, excluding the screen's resonsiveness, seems to bein good condition. So what is wrong? Did it come in contact with water, or is just having a technical issue? I put it in rice, just in case.

    Hey TOR77,
I took a quick look at the troubleshooting touchscreen response document, and found the following resolution for your iPhone 4S:
    Resolution
If your device is experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, try the following steps:
    Restart your device
Hold the On/Off button until "slide to power off" appears. Slide to power off your device. When it is off, press the On/Off button to turn it back on.
If you can't restart your device, reset it by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for a least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
Clean the screen with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth.
Avoid using the device while wearing gloves, with wet hands, or immediately after applying hand lotion.
If you have a protective case, or if you are using a plastic sheet or film on the display, try removing them and testing the device without it.
If the steps above don't resolve your issue, please schedule a service appointment with an Apple Retail Store for evaluation. If an Apple Retail store is not an option, contact Apple to find out your best service option or see theService FAQ for your product.

  • Airport Express will not stop flashing amber light; Reset multiple times; Works for a second with green light and then resumes flashing amber

I bought an Airport Express to extend my Airport Extreme about a month ago. It worked great until 2 weeks ago it started flashing amber. I reset it and set it up via airport utility and it would work for a little while, with great connection, and then it resumes the flashing amber light. Here is the error message:
"This AirPort base station was unable to extend the wireless network. Make sure the wireless network you're trying to extend was set up and is working correctly, that you entered a matching wireless network password into this device, and that this device is in range of the wireless network."
The Airport Extreme is in working condition, in range, and entered in correctly. I do not understand how it can work great for a second and then stop.
    Thanks!

Power off both the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express
    Wait a few minutes
Power up the AirPort Extreme, and let it run a few minutes
Then, power up the AirPort Express
If you continue to have difficulty, ask Apple to replace the AirPort Express.

  • Bluetooth: Not Available / PRAM RESET does not help

I can see that many people have been having issues with BLUETOOTH going off-line since the last software update, but the solutions are working for me.
I have restarted x2, resetting the PRAM, but the problem persists.
Also, BT is not showing up in the system preferences, however when I search for it in Spotlight, it says it's there. I attempted to reload the BT app but the installer won't allow it since it thinks I already have the most recent version installed.
    HELP!
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I have one of the last PowerBook G4 15" 1.67Mhz. Everything is fine except Bluetooth, which works for a while then drops out. I'm using an Apple wireless mouse and keyboard, which work fine on several of the other Bluetooh-enabled Macs here, which include several G5s, towers and iMacs. On this unit, the Bluetooth icon will disappear from System preferences. I have to restart to get BT working again. Systen Profiler says I have Bluetooth but that it's "disabled." When I run the Bluetooth Firmware Updater, it says there's no Apple Bluetooth installed! I've paired the same Apple peripherals with a Powerbook 15" running Panther (X.3.9) and that unit runs BT fine.
The unit has been back to Apple twice, both times replacing the logic board, along with the Bluetooth card. Probelm persists. I've done the usually PRAM zapping (waiting for 3 chimes), reinstalled the operating system, etc. The problem persists. I've seen postings here and there that suggest there's a Bluetooth bug in X.4.6 with the Powerbooks. Apple should acknowledge this and fix it.
I continue to call Apple about this and they blow me off. Any other ideas?

  • No Bluetooth in 10.6.2 - SMC, PRAM resets do not resolve

I have a 15' MBP (9/2006, Core2duo 2.2gHz). I've tried clearing the PRAM and resetting the SMC, (multiple times each), no luck. Any other suggestions, or is this going to have to be an in store repair kind of thing?
    Thanks!

Do you get "Device not found" in the system profiler? If so, then it would not be tested by the AHT since it would not be seen by the AHT.
Do you know anything of the history of this Mac? If it was ever opened up for any reason, it's possible that the module is not connected to the logic board. If you once had bluetooth but now it has disappeared, either the module has died or possibly become disconnected, especially if it was not securely plugged into the logic board.
If you do want to get replacement original discs for your Mac, you can call Apple with your serial number and order them. There usually is a shipping and handling fee of around $60 from what I hear.
If by any chance the Mac is still under warranty, you should be able to get it fixed. If not, you could visit the ifixit site and get directions for opening it up and checking the Bluetooth connection:
    http://www.ifixit.com/
It's also possible to replace the module if you really do need bluetooth.
    Good luck!

  • Ibook not turning on after pram reset

I got 512 mb of ram for my 366 mhz blueberry ibook clamshell. When i put it in i reset the pram please help i have been letting it sit now. Please help

    Hi there Knuckles.
The first thing I would do in this situation is double check that you've installed the ram correctly. Follow apples recommended guide for installing third party ram.
Then, double to check to ensure that the ram you've selected is indeed compatible. It's an odd problem that one specific app isn't working after a ram upgrade, so you may need to look into some troubleshooting steps.
    Kind Regards.
    - Mike.

  • MY macbook pro would not start up after PRAM reset. HELP

I got the spinning beach ball of death again. And then I held the power button until it turned off. turned it back on and then it had the spinning loading wheel underneath the apple logo upon start up. I waited 10 minutes before holding down the power button again. Then I tried to reset the PRAM. After I thought I did it right. whenever I try and start it up it loads a grey screen that says. "you need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button, wait until your computer is off then press the power button again" and it says this in a few different languages. I need help -please. Thank you. I'm running mac os x leopard version 10.6.4

It sounds like your are suffering a Kernel Panic. I would recommend reading this article about KP's and how to trouble shoot them. If your machine is under warranty or if you have AppleCare you can bring it in and Apple can help you solve the problem.

  • My main account on my iPad is based off an email address that no longer exists and can not be recreated.  On top of that I forgot the password and answers to the security questions.  So I can not reset the password.  any suggestions?

I Now get constant pop ups to logon to iCloud but it wants a password that I forgot.  I also forgot the security question answers.  It can not email me a password reset because the email no longer exists and Verizon won't let me recreate it.  I know this will sound crazy but when I created the original Apple account with the old email address I put in a bogus birthdate because I do not like giving out personal info.
i Just want to do something to stop the iCloud popups.

Try contacting Support in your country, after confirming your id and that it's your account they should be able to reset its password.
Contacting Apple about account security : http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT5699
If your country isn't on that page then try this form and explain and see what they reply with : https://ssl.apple.com/emea/support/itunes/contact.html
When they've done that update the primary email address on the account to be an account that you have access to e.g. by tapping on it in Settings > iTunes & App Store and logging into it, via the Store > View Account menu option on your computer's iTunes, or via the 'manage your apple id' button on http://appleid.apple.com

  • IPod touch won't turn on, charge, iTunes doesn't recognize it, and the hard reset doesn't work

My iPod touch 5th gen died so I put in it the charger. Now even the dead battery screen doesn't come on. iTunes will not recognize it, The hard reset won't work, recovery mode doesn't work. Does anyone know how to fix this?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Could a SMC or PRAM Reset Affect a Superdrive's CD and DVD Read/Write?

Hi. Would a SMC or PRAM reset make the Superdrive read CD and DVDs better (it mounts CD-RWs and DVD+RWs which is usually labels as untitled DVD but it can't seem to mount original disks that are in good condition like: Snow Leopard DVDs that came with this iMac, Grand Theft Auto IV, Spellforce 2: Shadow Wars)? Or SMS and PRAM resets are not related to Superdrive?
    Thank you in advance.
    God bless.

The SMCreset does affect the superdrive but your condidion may be from dust/dirt in the DVD on the lens system. Mine is real sensitive to dirt and smudges on the actual DVD but occasional lens cleaning helps. You can get DVD lens cleaners (with the tiny brushes on the disk) from most vendors that carry the media.

my daughters ipod 4th gen will no longer charge past 20% and will not connect to a pc in order to back everything up. the cable is working fine, otherwise it would not even charge to the 20%. i have tried the reset to not lose any data and no luck, home+power for 10-15 seconds. I really would like to not lose everything she has, again, because I can't back it up this time. I have tried charging via a wall outlet and PC and both charge fine, just only to 20%. I am using the cable that came with it so no aftermarket issues there. Please help so I don't have to reset everything again.

Because once it has charged enough to be powered on as soon as you turn it on it says battery is at 20% and will not charge anymore after that, it just runs for about 5-10 minutes before the battery dies again. The battery cycles discharge/recharge daily and its not on the charger at full charge for more than a couple hours and is never totally dead for more than a couple of hours.
