Alt-Tab Causes Run-away Icons

Catchy title, but true. When I click Alt-Tab to switch between apps, the icons blink and alternate very quickly. I can still switch programs, but usually I "miss" and another app opens up - like Bridge. Not a show-stopper, but very annoying.

I've seen video driver issues do similar, though "missing" the app has not usually part of that.
Now, for some questions:
1.) do you have Window Blinds?
2.) is Aero on?
3.) is Sidebar on?
4.) what video card and driver version?
5.) do you have the MS InteliPoint mouse driver installed?
Good luck,
Hunt

  • Microsoft Excel 2010 alt-tab causes part of screen to freeze

One of my clients is having the issue above. When he opens 2 different Excel applications, and starts doing usual work, which involves copy-paste from one Excel to the other one, and changes between them using alt-tab, then all of a sudden part of one Excels
screen freezes and you can see the cells being at the wrong place. When you minimize the window and then come back to it, then it's fixed, or when you scroll down and back up it will fix itself. I have found other people having the same problem on the forum,
but the only thing I haven't tried is getting a new graphics card installed instead of the Intel HD one. I even tried uninstalling the Intel HD driver, letting Windows use some default driver, but the problem persisted even then.
The machine has Windows 7 installed, Office 2010. Hardware is standard Lenovo T420.
Since I've tried everything and the problem is still not fixed I'm hoping for some more ideas.
PS: I'm 100% sure not using alt-tab would fix the issue, or reverting to Office 2007, but those fixes are not acceptable for my client.

check out thread below, it suggests this thing:
I experienced the exact thing you are describing and it was very annoying.  I eventually found an
option under File - Options - Advanced, in the Display category, called "Show all windows in the Taskbar".  Uncheck this and alt-tab will stop trying to interpret each spreadsheet in the same instance of Excel as a different application.  Then
to switch between spreadsheets in the same excel instance, use ctrl-tab instead.

  • Multiple Instances of the Same Excel Document in 'Alt-Tab' List

So I am having a very weird problem, and I can't seem to find an answer anywhere. I was recently given a new laptop at work with Windows 7 and Office 2010. It has worked pretty well so far, but recently I have been noticing something very strange. While
this problem is quite small, due to how I use windows and my habits of alt-tabbing between multiple documents throughout the day, it is causing a serious problem.
This typically only happens when I have multiple excel documents open, and am tabbing between them or other documents or windows. For example, I have ClientList.xlsx open and need to cut and paste a cell from it to FinalReview.xlsx. I have 'ClientList' open
and just clicked Control+C to copy a cell. I click on 'Alt-tab' and while the icon in the alt tab list appears to change, I am taken immediately back to the same document. What is happening is that there are actually two separate copies of 'ClientList'
in my alt tab list. If I press and hold 'Alt' and then hit 'tab' twice, I can pull up the other excel file, 'FinalReview'.
At any point in time, I can click on the 'Alt' button to see the list and see three Excel icons. There will be one large excel icon with the name 'Microsoft Excel - ClientList.xlsx', and then right next to it will be two smaller looking excel icons with
the names 'ClientList.xlsx' and 'FinalReview.xlsx' respectively.
Has anyone seen anything like this before? I have spend hours searching for a resolution on the internet, as well as calling my work's tech support line and have not found anything remotely close to this as even being an issue.
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi,
First, I would like to verify whether this issue only occurred with Excel? Have you checked the Excel settings? You can perform a
system restore to see how it works.
In addition, I suggest you try the following:
    1. Test the issue in Clean Boot and
    Safe Mode
    2. Create a new user to test if this issue still exists.
    Thanks,

Mate, did you even bother to read the question? To mark your response as the answer is a complete load of garbage - you haven't even bothered to respond to the actual question. The correct answer is below from B.W._.

  • [SOLVED] Customizing alt+tab menu in Openbox

I tried to change a little bit the openbox alt+tab menu, and I have some questions, but first things first. This is my current menu:
    What I want is:
    1. number of columns -- I wanted to set, for example, 10 columns for the menu.
    2. icon size -- Can I make them smaller or bigger?
    3. mouse support -- you know, I press alt+tab and choose an icon.
    4. Is there a way to group desktop apps? For instance, I have 5 apps in 1st desktop and 3 apps in 2nd desktop. When I press alt+tab, I want to see in the first row apps from desktop1 and in the second row apps from desktop2, etc.

    Finally, I've found it -- https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/xwinmosaic-git/
It has a mouse support, and it is possible to change icon size as well as box width and height. Also, there are some other features, but there is one thing that I want to remove:
As you can see, it also shows the windows which are in the background, like conky, etc.
Ignoring this little annoying thing, It is basically what I want.

  • An Alt+Tab app-switching icons issue

This may sound trivial, but it's really bothering me.
When I switch apps with Alt+Tab under GNOME, there is this low resolution image-missing icon, for certain programs.
And I don't really mind those few programs not having their own icons, it's the low res generic one that I'm annoyed with.
So, ok- I went out to search for this icon's source, and I actually found out that these image-missing icons reside in /usr/share/icons/gnome/<RESOLUTION>/status directories.
And, to my surprise there is actually a perfectly good 256x256 .png image in its appropriate directory, called image-missing.png
Worse still, I tried to remove (and backup) all the low res ones, leaving only the 256x256 one in place, but to no avail.
Somebody care to explain all this to me?
    Thanks.

I am still having this issue. I've noticed it on my old iMac with a wired keyboard and mouse, my new iMac with a wired keyboard and magic mouse and lastly my MPB, with obviously a built in keyboard and mouse. It's not a failed USB device or failed hardware IMO. It is more likely a bug with SL or a third party app.
Though I personally don't run any third party apps in the background other than Dropbox.
Has anyone else out there still been seeing this issue?
I actually took a short video of it happening tonight, you can see it here:

I'm running OS X 10.6.7. Thanks for any insight or help.

  • Different icon for Frame's title bar and alt tab

I have been using Frame.setIconImage to supply the image icon for the title bar and (on Windows, the <alt><tab> image). The trouble is there is only one image for both but one is usually small 16x16 and the other is usually large 32x32. What I have been doing is creating an image that is 32x32 but scales back to 16x16 and still looks good.
The trouble is it is tricky to create graphics like that. I wondered is there a way to specify one image for the title bar and another image for the <alt><tab> image?
    thanks,
    Ian

Has anyone encountered this problem before? Is there
a solution? Or can anyone say definitivly that
specifying the title bar icon and the <alt><tab> icon
separately is not possible?Sorry- you can't do it. Windows apps can do this easily because they use a .ico that can contain both the 16x16 and 32x32.
There are a couple of hacks I tried once, trying to swap icons based on events, but they are horrible hacks and don't work well enough to use. Your choices are as follows:
    1. Use a 16x16 .gif as your icon and have it look good in the upper left hand corner of your frame but horrible during alt-tab,
    or
    2. Use a 32x32 .gif and have it look poorly in the upper left hand corner of your frame but good during most other times.
    I'd choose #1.
(The reason behind all of this is Java does a much worse job of resizing your icon than you could do yourself with a little work in Paint Shop Pro.)

  • Pressing alt+tab to change program or pressing tab to move to next entry cell in a web page is causing Firefox to open a new tab

A new tab is being opened in Firefox (started only today) when I do any of the following
    1. pressing alt+tab when in Firefox
    2. pressing tab to change data entry cell in a web page
    3. pressing direction keys (any of up - down - left - right)

Upgrade Firefox to Firefox 13 (released today) and then try to Reset Firefox. This will fix most problems with Firefox that people experience. [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]]

  • GNOME 3 : "drag-and-drop" + "Alt-Tab" not working

    Hello,
In GNOME 3.2.1 with Mutter 3.2.1 (current ones in Arch), it is supossedly fixed the following "bug":
    Mutter 3.2.1 changelog:
    * Allow keyboard window switching (alt-Tab) during drag-and-drop [Matthias, #660457]
But I can't make it working.
As test, I open a folder (maximized) and vlc (background). I drag a movie file with left click mouse and pressing Alt-Tab makes nothing.
In fact, when I press Alt the file icon changes to a question mark "?"...
Has anyone been able to make it work?
    Thanks in advance,

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • GT70 Dominator Pro 2PE Freezing on Alt tab

Hi there, first post just wondering if anyone can think of any fixes I haven't.
Basically for about a little over a week now my laptop freezes whenever I alt tab out of a game. I can play fine, games will run great but as soon as I alt tab out and then back in the game locks in place. I can then no longer alt tab back out, and if I bring up task manager I cant click anything either. I can bring it up but as soon as I click on a process to attempt to terminate it my mouse switches back to the in game cursor and its locked again. All I can do is ctrl alt del, then sign out then back in, very frustrating.
I have all the up to date drivers, I have ensured that for both my intel video card and my Nvidia card. My windows updates are all up to date. I have the most recent bios update. I can't really think of what it would be.
Thanks in advance for your time

this could be a issue with game itself just my guess since i have problems like this myself few times on some games when you alt tab out then back the game .exe status changes from Running to Not responding. and remains like that all time so either that is issue with game itself or it could be something else causing it but idk exactly what but i still think it is more likely game itself.
I assumed that at first too, as it was mostly just WoW that was doing it. But now Diablo 3 is doing it, I'm going to check other games when I get home this evening. I can't see anything about it on Blizzards support forums, usually something like this occurs after a patch and is fairly widespread.

  • When alt + tab between applications firefox freezes to a black blank screen and will not move. The only response it will allow is the close option after right clicking on the task bar in English

I normally have several applications running at the same time, some of them are running 24/7/365.
When accessing the applications its easier to alt+tab between them. On the occasions that I can actually get Firefox to open and stay open it always freezes and remains immovable on the screen after switching to another program.
Firefox goes black except for the border and the close button at the top right. The other buttons disappear. Even after waiting for a period of time it does not clear.
The freeze can occur either on the first switch or second switch. However, it always happens.

Have also since found out that to start FF4 in safe mode you just hold shift whilst double-clicking the icon. We only find these things out after the event, murphy's law!

  • Alt-tab doesn't work properly

Alt-tab is supposed to display the icons for the applications that are running. If I keep the alt key depressed, the icons are supposed to stay visible. But on my system, they are only visible for a couple of seconds, and then the window for the icon I
have highlighted opens. How do I ensure that the icons stay visible when the alt key is held down?

When I use Alt/Tab (press alt/tab and release tab but hold alt) I get different results at different times. For example, this morning I used Alt/Tab and it displayed the list of thumbnails on top of their respective windows. That worked fine several times.
But a few minuets later it changed and displays the list of thumbnails behind the windows (i.e., you can't see the list).
I know this can be turned off by disabling Aero Peek but that will disable other useful features too. I am using Windows 7 on a DELL E6440 but this problem exists on all computers I have ever used, including Levento.
Win/Pause just brings up Control Panel/System. Win-F11 does nothing (in Firefox).
Note that I did not load or run any programs between the time it was working and the time it quit working. I was only switching between applications.
This is clearly a Windows 7 bug. I don't see the problem on Windows 8 (but I don't use that much).

  • Firefox freezes the computer for about 20-30 seconds (not even Alt+Tab works), the screen blinks black and then it shows the desired page. Does that several times at the beginning, then sort of stabilizes.

This happens even if I simply hover the mouse over bookmarks, not even opening a page.
And waiting for this to happen some times or closing and re-opening seems to make it work ok again.
I've already disabled almost all add-ons (I'm using only one for Flash and NoScript right now), reinstalled Firefox (8.0.1), restoring only the bookmarks from an older version.

    * You can open the Firefox 4.0+ Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or use the Help menu item and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Don't select anything right now, just use "'Start in Safe Mode"''
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shift key) to open it again.''
'''''If it is good in the Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one.
Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.

  • App is activated just after it is hidden with Alt+tab

    Hi
I have following problem under Mac
My application changes screen resolution to the size of
    application on the
    startup
And when the user wants to jump to another application
    without closing
    director app(through ALT+TAB), I should restore original
    screen resolution.
Under Windows I've realised it using on activateWindow and on
    deactivateWindow handlers
    on deactivateWindow
    gResolutionXtra.reset_resolution()
    end
    on activateWindow
    gResolutionXtra.set_resolution(1024,768,32)
    end
But on MAC it works very strange
Just after application window disappears(after pressing
    ALT+TAB), it appears
again; using put-functions I see, that activateWindow handler
    is called. The
reason of this is reset_resolution function, which is called
    in on
deactivateWindow function. When it is commented - window
    disappears and is
activated just on next ALT+TAB or click on application Icon
    on taskbar -
directly as I need it and as it works under windows
Does any one have some workaround, how can I restore the
    resolution on
changing to another application but without activating the
    window again?
    Any help will be appreciated
    game_dev
P.S. Sorry for Windows terminology for mac problem, but I'm
    realy new to MAC

If I do not use reset_resolution function everything works
    fine
But at the moment I want to resen resolution in on
    deactivateWindow
handler - this strange thing happens - onactivateWindow is
    called
    authomatically
    How can i prevent it?
    any help will be appreciated

  • Acrobat X behavior with Windows 7 ALT-Tab

When I do an ALT-Tab in Windows 7, all of the Adobe Acrobat X open PDF files show up as icons (aero view is turned off).  How can I change Adobe so that only one icon is shown, no matter how many files I have open in Adobe Acrobat X.
    Thanks.

    >doesn't allow users to save the completed pdf forms to any of the network drives
Over in the Premiere Pro forum where I spend more time (use that more than the Acrobat that came with Master Collection) there are a few messages a year from people who want to use PPro with networked files, or run from a network instead of a standalone computer... and the answer has always been that the program is simply not designed to be used in that fashion... so it doesn't work
It would appear that Acrobat is also designed to run on a standalone computer, with local hard drive(s) and doing anything else just won't work
I don't remember the name of the (software-hardware?) but there was one message by someone using a specific type of network that allowed them to "spoof" the local computer into thinking that the network drive was actually a local drive hardwired to the computer... and that did work for file saving

  • JSE 8 very slow after 3 alt-tab's on XP SP2

Sun Java Studio Enterprise 8 Build 051011_2
    IDE/1 spec=5.9.1 impl=200507031930
    Windows XP 5.1
Intel Pentium 4 running at 3 GHz with 1.5 GB of ram
I have been doing a lot JNI work lately and find myself switching via
Alt-tab between the MS VS 2005.NET object browser and the Java
class into which I am projecting some COM methods... blah, blah
Anyway, after I've Alt-tab'd about 3 times, JSE 8 starts slowing down
incredibly for no apparent reason and the redraw takes longer and
    longer.
Saving the file I'm editing and forcing a GC improves things for a
    short time.
Another clue could be that in the files I'm editing, I am often moving
lines around that contain native method signature declarations.
Looking at the Task Manager in Windoze shows Java taking up
~55% of the CPU during these JSE introspectives.
    Any ideas?
    TIA,
    Mike Fidler

Ok, I've installed 8.1 and it still happens.
As I mentioned earlier, I do a lot of JNI work, and I constantly alt-tab between JSE 8.1 and MS VS 2005.
This morning the JSE was working fine until I started VS 2005 and as soon as I alt-tab'd between the two, the JSE refused to refresh and it is now sitting there unusable with nothing but a window frame; the client area is blank. :-(
Looking at the Task Manager, java.exe is not using any cpu. At all.
Minimizing and restoring is not doing anything. I tried to close JSE and restart it, but JSE won't close... it's like the message pump has siezed - except that minimize and restore work.
AFAIK, no other windows apps other than VS 2005 causes this peculiar behavior in JSE.
I recently installed SP1 for VS 2005. I can't say for certain, but it seems as though SP1 made the situation worse.
So, for posterity, here are the product versions I am using:
    Sun JSE 8.1 Build: 2006.12.01
    Java 1.5.0_09
    VM: Hotspot(tm) Client VM 1.5.0_09-b03
Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 - ENU Service Pack 1 (KB926601)
    Version 8.0.50727.762 (SP.050727-7600)
    Microsoft .NET Framework
    Version 2.0.50727
    Installed Edition: Professional
    Cheers,
    Mike Fidler
