Altering the shape of pixels in illustrator

Hello!
I was wondering if anyone might be able to give me some advice on how to alter the shape of the pixels in an image to a custom pixel shape in illustrator.
Thanks in advance.

Wittyhearts,
You asked:
Is there anyway I might be able to do this without having to recolour each of the hearts?
Yes, if you don't mind that the fill is pixel based.
Follow Jacob's steps to create a grid of hearts on top of your image.
Make sure that each heart is the size of the enlarged "pixel". (If you do this enlargement in Photoshop, use the Nearest Neighbour to get hard edges for each "pixel").
Make sure that the Hearts grid is aligned with the large image Pixel grid.
Fill the Hearts with Black. Select them all and Group them.
Select both the Hearts and the picture below it and click Make Mask in the Transparency Panel. Check the Invert Mask option.
This should be the result (I added black background).
I just thought that it may be even better to convert the image fiirst to a vector mosaic: Object menu > Create Object Mosaic...
Then create the Heart grid and make it a Mask.
When you go to Object > Flatten Transparency and set the Raster/Vector slider to 100, you will get coloured heart shaped vectors

  • In illustrator, is there a way to reduce anchors points in a segment path without altering the path?

In illustrator, is there a way to reduce anchors points in a segment path without altering the path?
Is there a better and more efficient way to reduce anchors points than using the pen-minus tool?
    Thanks.

That's what the Simplify command is for. It tries to reduce the number of segments while you judge the results and adjust the parameters accordingly.
Of course, if any given curve were possible with just two anchors, then all paths could have just two anchors. So obviously, fewer segments is not always possible.
As with many other things, though, you need to realize this: Automatic functions have no human discernment whatsoever. That's just as true in the matter of optimizing paths as it is in auto-tracing. The program routine which tries to figure out which anchors can go and which anchors must stay has absolutely no idea of what the path is actually a drawing of. Only you know that. So the bottom line remains the same: Optimizing paths correctly should be done with deliberate discernment, not just left up to dumb automated routines.
Illustrators draw paths deliberately--one anchor at a time--for good reason.

When I create a rectangle, I can not to change the shape of a rectangle with the cursor in illustrator CC 2014 For what?

    Xavigarcia,
I am afraid you have come across the Live Rectangle bug which is limited to the MAC versions starting with 10.7 and 10.8, but not 10.9 (Mavericks) or 10.10 (Yosemite). Hopefully, the bug will be fixed soon.
So a switch to Mavericks or Yosemite with a reinstallation might be the way to solve it here and now.
To get round it in each case, it is possible to Expand the Live Rectangles to get normal old fashioned rectangles, or to Pathfinder>Unite, or to use the Scale Tool or the Free Transform Tool.
A more permanent way round that is to create normal old fashioned rectangles, after running the free script created by Pawel, see this thread with download link:

  • What happened to the 'Shape Mode' shortcut keys on the Pen Tool?

For the longest time I've used both the Shape and Pen Tools for drawing vectors in Photoshop, but with CS6 I noticed a lot of weird behaviours. The one that is really getting to me is the lack of 'Shape Mode' shortcut keys when using the Pen Tool. When on the 'Shape Tool', fo example Cirle or Rectange, you can press the Shift to change the Shape Mode to 'Add', Alt to change it to 'Subtract' or both together to get 'Intersect'. This functionality used to exist on the Pen Tool too, but in CS6 I can't seem to get it working.
A collegue suggested to move over to Illustrator for all my Vector needs, and I know that this a good advice. However the lack of quick/integrated changing between 'Shape Modes' in either product (now) makes drawing things alot slower (for me).
Am I missing something, or is this feature now ommited in Photoshop CS6. If it is does anyone know if its possible to script something to allow this kind of behviour in Photoshop or Illustrator?
    cheers,
    Jon

The modifier keys "Alt|Opt", "Ctrl|Cmd" and "Shift" work differently depending on the tool being used but the individual keys seem to provide somewhat related functions.
For example the "Shift" key tends to be a constraining key Rectangle tools are constrained to square ellipse tools to Circles. However if there is an Active selection when you hold down the skey when you drag out a new selection it does not reset the current selection instead the new selection is not constrained and is added to the current selection. Shift constrains Transform tool to current aspect ratio,  Shift constrains Line tools to vertical, horizontal or 45 degree angles. Pen tool like line tool shift constrains the angle.
The "Alt|Opt" key changes the way tools operate. Transforms are from the center not from the side or corner being dragged.  Selection tools like the rectangle and ellipse will cause the intal drag out be from the center however it there is a Active selection dragging out a new selection will be subtracted from the current selection. This key changes the Pen tool from draw mode to anchor point adjusting.
The "Shift" and "Alt|Opt" modifier keys can be used together to have an operation be both constrain and from the center.
The "Ctrl|Cmd" key seems to change the way a tool works on a control anchor point.  The Pen Tool changes from Pen Draw mode to Direct Selection tool to facilitate moving the point.  Transform can be distorted a single corner point can be moved and distort the rectangle bounding box.
These keys may have other functions I don't know about.  Photoshop has many features so many I don't know if any one person know and uses all of them. For the rest of us they seem to be Photoshop hidden secrets.

  • How to make type flow with the shape of an object?

    Hi there,
I am a bit of an Illustrator newbie. I am needing some help to work out how to wrap or manipulate type to fit the shape and flow of an object? I have attached an image to show you what I am trying to do. I want the "shop by measure" text to be in the yellow blank space of the tape measure but flowing with the shape of the tape. Any help appreciated! Be gentle please lol.

See online help. Read about Envelope Distortion. Then keep things simple as you experiment. This takes about 2 minutes.
When doing "ribbon distortions," selecting corresponding top and bottom MeshPoints as pairs and moving/scaling/rotating them together helps avoid things getting all distorted out of control. See this PDF for an example. The example was done using a 1 Row, 2 Column Mesh.

  • Why does the knife tool leave gaps in the shape? (CS6)

When I use the knife tool on an shapeit leaves a gap where I slice. First I thought it was just an illusion in the program but it stays even after I've exported the image (both by "save as" in illustrator and "export" in inDesign). I've been careful not to move the shapeafter I used the tool so I don't think that should be a reason.
I've tried on different types of shapes like normal circles and more complex shapes. I've also attempted to start a new file from scratch but with the same result  What could the reason be? Is there a setting I should be aware of?
This is what I see in Illustrator:
And this is what the image looks like when saved as pdf (in illustrator):
It also looks the same if I place it in inDesign and then export to pdf.
EDIT: I don't know if it is important but the size of the shape is about an A4 or there about.
    Best regards,
    SirSkorpan

Thank you for your reply, I still have a slight problem though,
Turning off anti-aliasing in illustrator did take away the gap when viewing the artwork in illustrator, but as soon as I export it through inDesign or use "save as" to make a pdf the gap is back. Is there an option to turn off anti-aliasing when exporting a document?
This is what I see when zooming in max (6400%) in acrobat reader:
When u say it's a screen issue do u mean that the gap won't show when printed? The problem is that I'm doing artwork that will be shown digital as well. Is there a way to get rid of this?
Thanks again for taking your time.
    Best regards,
    SirSkorpan

  • Where Can I Download the Chalk 11 Pixel Brush?

    Hello all,
I have loaded all the available brushes in Photoshop CC, but I can't find the "Chalk 11px Brush."  Can anyone tell me where I can locate and download this brush?
    Thanks!

Just a little something to think about, but there's usually nothing very complicated about brushes. It is a trivial thing to share a brush on this forum by uploading a 100% image that contains the brush.  That image can then be pasted into Photoshop, and a new brush preset made from it.
With the Chalk brushes the only setting is Smoothing, and spacing is set at 5%.  That's all there is to it, but you'd need to click on the forum image to make sure it is open at 100% before right clicking and copying.
A more complex brush is still transferable in exactly the same way, but you'd need to list the Shape dynamics etc.  If you are relatively new to Photoshop, there are few things more rewarding than learning how the presets work.  It will help you demystify some of the things you would like to do, but have no idea how to do.  I'll give you an example:
Lets say you want to produce a rough and random edge.  This might be in layer mask, or perhaps you are trying to make a grunge frame around a distressed image treatment.  There are brushes out there that you can stamp down, but use them once and its game over.  OK, you can flip them, and resize them, but they are still basically the same brush.
So, start with the 36 pixel Chalk preset.
    Shape Dynamics
    Scattering
Set spacing to about 30%.  Set Roundness to about 50% or lower for a spiky effect, or 100% for a normal grunge look
    And what you get
I'm hoping you that if you not yet familiar with how the brush presets work, this might interest you to have a play with them.

  • HELP. How do I lock a line to a shape so it will auto extend when dragging the shape?

How do I lock a line to a shape so it will auto extend when dragging the shape? I cant figure out how to turn this feature on and off.

Edit: JET got there first but I believe your problem is not as complex as he would have you believe :-)
Complex? What is simpler for the user than being able to connect pre-shaped text frames (not limited to Illustrator's silly Convert To Shape options) with rules, and then be able to move the text frames and have the rules auto-adjust (automatically avoiding other objects, automatically reshaping right-angle bends, etc. etc,) accordingly. What's "complex" about drawing a flowchart?
One can properly construct a dozen such diagrams in a program that provides proper connector lines in the time it takes to fuss and twiddle with Illustrator for such a simple task. FreeHand, Draw, Canvas, Visio all provide connector lines features.
The diagramming features in the draw module of Open Office is as good as any of them for the purpose of mundane decision tree diagrams, org charts, and flowcharts; and OpenOffice can be had for free. The same is true of Inkscape. You can download and install either one in less time than it will take to build a single typical such diagram in Illustrator. Using such tools is vastly more intuitive for a beginner than futzing about with Illustrator's "direct selection" routines.

  • My selection tool doesn't select shape directly, only the path of the shape.

When i'm working in Illustrator and I want to select a shape, it is making me click on the path of the shape instead of just inside of it. The shape does have a filling so that isn't the problem. It seems to have just recently happened as well.  I tried to restart the program and the computer but it still does it. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Is this box checked in Preferences?
    If so, uncheck it.

  • What should the basic site pixel size be?

I have an issue that I need to resolve correctly, but have
conflicting information between the site designer and the site
programmer. The basic home page for the site has been designed to
be 950 pixels wide and 714 pixels deep.
The programmer is telling us to make the size only 600 deep
and wider. We did not want a long horizontal shape for our home
page, which is what the programmer is asking for.
Here is a site we like the looks of and want to keep the
shape of the content more square like this one:
    http://www.hinkleylighting.com/
My main concern is that the programmer is hindering the
design of the site, but I must consider that the programmer knows
    what he is talking about.
I appeal to those who know how to deal with such issues here
for advice at this point. How should I approach this so we can get
a site that 'looks' like what we want, but also give the programmer
what he needs for graphics and backgrounds properly sized to make
    sense in the real world.
    TIA,
    Ken

As has been recommended before I would forget about height.
    Why? Because
you have no idea how your user has their font display set. If
    it's at
"Largest" or bumped way up in some browser, the page will be
    much taller
    than if it's not.
If you assume a 17" screen with 1024px width and maximized
    browser viewport
as your lowest common denominator, then you would want to
    make your pages
about 980px wide so as not to drop horizontal scrollbars.
    Forget height.

  • When using the rectangle tool in CS5, a graph appears in the shape. How do I turn the graph off?

When using the rectangle tool in CS5, a graph appears in the shape. How do I turn the graph off?
    Thanks!

It might be the pixel grid if your zoomed in greater than something like 500% to 700%.
Go under View>Show and uncheck Pixel Grid.
Or maybe you have a layer style set in the tool options bar for shape layers.

  • CS4 Vector shapes look pixelated

I'm new here. In fact I just signed up to get help with this issue.
Anyway. In school last semester, I took a computer art class in which we made things in Photoshop CS4. Now that the semester is over, I took my work home with me (I also have PS CS4). Anyway, one of the exercises we did was creating vector art. In school, the vectors that I made turned out fine. The edges were clearly defined and there where no real issues to be see. However, when I took it home to look at it, I noticed that all of the vector shapes and lines look pixilated... as if I drew them with a brush or something.
Here is a screenshot of what it looks like in CS4:
Also, for clarification, here is another example:
    First, the new image settings:
    Red elipse:
    Zoomed in:
Anyway, I admit to not being 100% knowledgeable in the program... so it might just be a silly simple mistake or setting that I don't have checked or something. Any help would be appreciated as this issue is really annoying me.
Also, if it matters, my computer is much better standing that the ones we used in school.

    Two things:
First, if the Vector Mask path is active in the Paths panel, the path will be visible. This can cause the edges of shapes to look raggedy.
The main culprit, though, is that you need to view the image at 100% (Control+Alt+ZERO, 'Actual Pixels' in the Zoom tool Option Bar) for the shapes to look smooth. Very often, viewing at other than 100% can cause visible artifacts to appear on the screen that aren't actually in the image.

  • Shape gets pixelated when rotated

    Hello,
I created a logo for a client and I'm having an issue where when I rotate a shape created with the rectangle tool, the edges become pixelated. Attached is the logo. You can see what I'm talking about with the red rectangle. How can I go about fixing this? Thanks in advance for any help!

The Anit-Aliased Artwork is ticked. Here's what it looks like when you zoom in. As you can see, the yellow-orange shape has smooth edges, whereas the red doesn't.

  • How to create a hidden shape in a photograph (illustrator/ photoshop)

    Hi,
I'm new to illustrator and even newer to photoshop so I'm not sure which would be suitable to acheive the look I want. I have searched google endlessly by cannot find the tutorial I need.
I have a photograph, and I would like for a shape (say a triangle for arguments sake) to be on the photograph. I would like the shape to have no fill or stroke as such (so the photograph is uninterrupted), but only to be visible due to the part of the photograph that is within the triangle being slightly different to the rest. Examples would be that the triangle may have a slightly different texture, be black and white, or be magnified slightly etc?
If anyone can get me started as to the direction I need to go it would be greatly appreciated. Any examples would also be great so that I can see if it is actually the result I'm looking to achieve.
    Thanks in advance.

That effect would be easier to do in photoshop, since it is an image.
Basically what you would do is create a path instead of a shape, found in the top tool bar when you use one of the shape tools.
This path can then be turned into a selection this selection will be the only area affected, or better yet jump the selected area to a new layer then you can apply styles to that layer.
ctrl-j (windows) cmd-j (mac) to copy the selection to a new layer
ctrl-shift-j (windows) cmd-shift-j (mac) to move the selection to a new layer
If you move the selection to a new layer, then you can slightly move the location a hare which can help in giving it a puzzle look.
