Alternate display and mp4 files

Hi,
I regularly use my MacBook (OS X Leopard) in a large lecture hall with a ceiling-mounted projector. The presentations have often been prepared on my iMac G5 with Tiger, but that's no problem. I use "alternate display to view presenter information." Last week, I inserted some mp4 files into some empty slides in my sequence...it worked brilliantly at home (the files started up automatically, played, and then finished, at which point I just hit my right arrow key, which took me to my next text slide). When I went to class and hooked up the MacBook to the projector, everything was fine until I hit the key to advance to a slide with an embedded mp4. The Keynote window was immediately gone and I was left with a view of my desktop...nothing happened. Interestingly enough, Keynote had not quit. Its icon had a miniature green "play" button on it (as you would expect on a CD player, etc.). The only way for me to salvage the presentation -- as class was about to start -- was to run the presentation with display mirroring. I lost the opportunity to have my presenter notes, but advancing to and past the slides with mp4 video clips was no problem at all.
Does anyone know what happened here and how I might go about troubleshooting? Did I do something that the projector could not handle? Are there resolution settings for both displays that I should pay attention to here? As previously mentioned, I've never had a problem with alternate display and presenter notes in this hall or with any other projector on campus; that's why I assume that the mp4s were part of the problem.
Much obliged for any help whatsoever,
Hank

Check Keynote Preferences > General and be sure the box "Copy audio and movies into document" is checked. Other than that, I have no suggestions.
Good luck.

I created project in iMovie then exported it to MP4 and also MOV file at highest definition possible + I added it to iDVD and had a number issues about encoding errors regarding the mp4 file. MOV worked but the quality was terrible.....
    MOV file is as follows:

    Colour Profile: HD (1-1-1)
    Dimensions: 1920 x 1080

I have updated iDVD and iMovie.
I even bought the iSkysoft app from the mac store and that was terrible too.

First of all, Hunt--thanks for responding!
"First, where are you playing the MPEG-2, that you see that jitter?"
On both a MacBook Pro, an Acer laptop and my Mac Tower. I would love to think that it is a problem with the playback system, and that if I merely send the file off to the duplicator they won't have the same problem. Maybe that is the case...I don't know if I have a choice rather than sending it off to see. But it happens in the same spots, in the same way, on all three of the players so I'm a little reluctant to have faith.
"Another thing that can cause jitter in an MPEG-2 is the Bit-Rate - higher the Bit-Rate, the better the quality, but the larger the file. For a DVD, one is limited by the total Bit-Rate (both Audio & Video), but with longer prodcutions, some users choose too low a Bit-Rate. If this is the issue, one would need to go back to the original Project and do a new Export/Share."
Of course, but in the case there is no more 'original project.' It is gone like the wind, stolen along with his computer and backups.
I think I am stuck using one of two files as my master: a DVD he burned where I only see the stutter/vibration/jitter once, or the mpeg2 file where I see it three times. Hopefully, the duplication house can rip if off of one of them and not see the jitter. I know that in audio, my personal filed, you can do a lot to enhance already existing sound--EQ, compression, tape saturation emulation software, etc. I guess I'm hoping there is some kind of analog to the video world that address jitter after a source has been printed--if indeed the source has been printed to be jittery.
    Thanks,
    Doug

  • Trouble displaying small MP4 file

I am ready to pull my hair out.  There should be a small MP4 file on the upper right hand side of the home page.  I have triple checked the file name in the code and have triple checked that the file has been uploaded onto the server.  But I can't get anything to display in firefox.  If I right click and tell firefox to open the video using windows media player, it does come up in the media player system.  What gives?
    http://www.simiyouthsoccer.org/

If it's basically a slide-show, but in video format, I would...
    1. Run the video on my computer screen in the largest possible size and take screen captures of each of the main "frames".
    2. Take those screen captures into Photoshop to crop and resize to the appropriate pixel width/height (using a uniform h/w is best)
    3. Use Save for Web & Devices in PS (Ctrl + Shift + Alt + S)
    4. Use the 4 up feature of the Save for web... dialogue to find the "lowest good" setting.
    5. Click the lowest setting's frame to highlight it and choose Save (save to your site's local root folder)
    6. Bring the images to your site definition in DW and use something like jQuery Cycle2, Nivo Slider or WOW Slider to turn them into a slide show

  • What codec to convert .MXF and MP4 files into to use with alpha channels in Ae and Pr CS6?

When I import .mxf File, shot on a Canon C300, into after effects, the alpha channel options are greyed out, when I look in, interpret footage, main. This also is the case importing .MP4 files, shot on a Gopro hero 3. I used to use final cut and using compressor convert the files to pro res 4444 or 422. What's my new workflow for preparing files with alpha channels to use in After Effect and Premiere and do I use Media Encoder to do it?

Better question: Where do you expect that Alpha channel to come from and contain any useful info for transparency? You're making a fuss over a non-issue. Unless you apply keying or other methods of creating transparency, even if there were an Alpha channel it would be fully opaque and then what's the point?

  • Importing avi and mp4 files into iPhoto

I just finished importing my PC photo library into iPhoto and I ran into a snag.
iPhoto does not import video files in *.avi or *mp4 format.
On my old PC photo library, I have video clips taken into mostly avi format with older digital cameras, and which are stored in the same photo directories by date. When I realized that I could not sync avi files to my iOS devices, I used a conversion program to convert the the avi files to mp4 format, and was able to sync these to my iOS devices.
Now apparently iPhoto does not recognize these mp4 files. I would like to have my video clips in iPhoto so that I can sync them as needed to my iOS devices through iTunes and also sometimes use them for video editing in iMovie. Within iMovie, I see where there is a link to the iPhoto video library... so somehow I have to get these into a format recognized by iPhoto.
Can anyone recommend a method that will accomplish this? I assume I will have to convert the avi/mp4 files to some other format. Is there a utility that will extract out the video files from my hundreds of photo directories and let me convert them to the accepted format by iPhoto, preferably keeping the time/date stamp intact?

  • CS3 and mp4 files, black frames

    Hi,
I am working as a reporter for the sports portal. So far I have been making my videos using Adobe Pro CS3. Previously I used Sony MiniDV Handycam and I had no problem editing them afterwards. Yesterday I got new camera - Sony XDCAM EX. When I import videos in my computer I have them in MP4 format. The first problem I had was that I could have sound for those MP4 files when I imported them in Adobe CS3 (if someone could help with this as well, it would be wonderful). I figured out how to get this sound but when I finally made my video and exported that, my new .avi movie had like black frames, it was dimming regularly like the movies they made in the beggining of previous century.

  • Viewing mov, avi, and mp4 files in photoshop 12

How can I view mov, mp4, and avi files in Photoshop 12?

thanks for your reply Tom. the video is from cameras, video cameras, vhs tapes, and mini dvds. everything looks much worse after import into fcpx;  i haven't imported hd files. The specs. are, everything gets blurry and color pales.  i just tried importing four more files (and optimized), all mov, (no avi or mp4), and there is no change in quality. I'm comparing the video in fcpx to the same video before it was imported. i've compared it side by side to the files being played in quicktime, real player, idvd, and el gato eye tv (third party video capture software). everything is crisp and color is vibrant before going into fcpx.

  • FCP6 and .mp4 files

I want to edit .mp4 files (1280x720, codec MPEG-4) with FCP 6. I don't understand which sequence preset to chose. Do I have to convert the files (with MPEG Streamclip for example) into HDV Apple ProRes-422 and then chose the appropriate sequence in FCP, or is it possible to import the files directely in FCP ?
I also have the same problem with AVCHD Lite .mts files, that I first converted into QT, codec mp4 (720x1280). I'd like to avoid a further conversion into Prores-422.
Is there an easier way to do it ?
Many thanks for your answer, BF

Yes, you need to convert the files before you import them into FCP. Personally I'd use prores. If you had 7, you could use prores LT, which is smaller. Avoid converting to hdv, really a clunky format to work with!

  • Spotlight and mp4 files

Hey, I have a bunch of videos that are mp4 files. They have tags. I'd like to be able to search on those tags. The problem it seems is that Spotlight doesn't index mp4s... which is weird, since its a common format, and clearly spotlight was designed to search movies. There are even movie specific spotlight attributes...
Anyone know a way to have spotlight index mp4 meta-data?
    Thanks

I have the same issue, I do not get a result, and I am looking at the file. Not sure what's going on. It used to work, prior to the upgrade to Snow Leopard.

  • Imovie and mp4 files

I have a bunch of MP4 files that I want to use for projects in imovie but it says I need to open them with imovie and make them able to be shared. I can't open them with imovie- how can I use them?

yes, all of these would work
1-quick and simple method: Have Perian installed. Open video clip in quick time player. save as movie.
2-slightly more elaborate method. Use Mpeg streamclip. Save as Movie, or whatever
3- let me help you out here- there might have been something called "IMovie help"
but if not, I'll try to get you started.
    a- get iMovie working
b- go to File, then Import, then Movies, then pick your video clip, and wait until it has
finished importing (the lower box). after it has done so, and all of it has appeared
in the lower box, then press command-A there to select all, move the mouse
over to the front of the video clip, which should have a slight yellow border around all of it, until you see a hand. click and drag from the bottom box, to the top box, and the video clip should go up to the top box. make sure you have advanced controls turned on. move the mouse to the front of the video clip in the top box to the blue things you will see there, or double click, and you should get a popup menu for audio and video adjustment. After adjusting the video and audio
(don't get me started on how to snip out clips you don't want), and after clicking 'done" then go to the top of the screen, and you should see something called "SHARE" under that you can choose either Export via quicktime or Export as movie
and either way ought to work, depending on what your needs are, and let it export that movie and you should have a video clip ready to go
that concludes today's little lesson on basic iMovie use, please pay your instructor before leaving the classroom
    thanks and goodnight

I think you could try either lifehacker, youtube or instructables  for how to use iMovie if you don't have the manual available

  • H.263 Exports and .mp4 Files

First off I am running CS5 on Windows 7.
I am trying to export videos for Blackberry devices (specifically the older models which I don't believe support h.264 decoding.)  On my old computer, using Sorenson Squueze, I was able to produce a file that would play on the older models. I've exported several videos using the h.264 format, which play on newer devices but only play audio on the older phones.
I've been trying to use the mpeg4 preset, but it seems to only be capable of playing 3gp files, and the ones that I export don't seem to play very well, if at all,on the devices.  There's the option under the mpeg4 preset to change the Multiplexer to mp4, which I've tried.  This always results in an unplayable file.  Unplayable in Device Manager, unplayable in Quicktime.  Does anyone have any experience with these devices? or with the mp4 multiplexer?  Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
I ran the old file, that I was exporting from Squeeze through GSpot, so if any of you can read it and tell me where to start, or conclusively that this file/its properties cannot be replicated in Premiere, I'd be very grateful.

Any chance you can explain what you did/why it helped?  I see that you have it on level 3, and have enabled the resynchronization marker... is that what made it work with the mp4 multiplexer?
I used the MP4 multiplexer instead of the 3GPP multiplexer; I think that 3GPP is far more strict about how a file can be encoded and packaged, and the BB seems fine with MP4 as a container. That said, the BB video camera records to 3GPP files, so who knows?
Simple profile is a must; ASP won't work. Levels dictate the pixel dimensions of a file, the frame rate, and the maximum (and probably minimum) bitrate. Profiles actually describe what capabilities an particular standard or "part" has and can use to encode a file; for example, B-frames. To define a 320x240, 30fps, 400kbps file, I had to use Level 3... no biggie. Changing the level will automatically clamp those parameters, so you can see where the restrictions lie. Check here for more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG-4
I used CBR, though you could probably use VBR 1-pass; 2-pass is not available. Your content will dictate what's best.
The biggest change I made was setting the Short Header to "No;" this was set to "Yes" by default. With this on, the dimensions were flip-flopped: height became 320, and width became 240. However, instead of being stretched, the video just expanded to the width dimension and stopped, maintaining aspect ratio. Turning this off allowed a proper encode. Resynchronization Markers were on by default; it didn't seem to make a difference. It might with streaming/transmitted video, but probably not with locally stored video.
That's pretty much it; I've typically used Squeeze in the past for my BB encodes, but I was actually quite happy with what came out of Premiere. I might use it going forward.

  • PSE 9 and MP4 files

Just thought that I should mention that PSE9 stops running when Elements is importing picture files and comes across an accidental MP4 extension. In Windows 7 it needed the Task Manager to restart. This user is stupid enough not to have checked that all the graphic files were in fact graphics!

You need to be sure which nikon camera, because although they all (most) are NEF files, they might require different versions of camera raw than the 6.5 you have in pse 9.
(pse 9 can only use up to camera 6.5)
Here's a list of cameras and the minimum required version of camera raw:

  • Sound but video frozen when playing  .AVI and  .MP4 files

I have several movie AVI movie files that cannot be played properly with Quicktime pro 7.4: the sound plays normally, but the video image remains frozen. These files play perfectly with VLC and Real Player. The identical problem happened with an iTunes movie rental. The problem persists after installing Perian, and re-installing Quicktime.
Any recommendations about how to troubleshoot this?

Here's what my Movie Inspector states.  What do I need to do to get Quick Time to show my video?  Audio is working fine.  Am I out of luck?
If I remember correctly, "m2v1" identifies "muxed" MPEG-2 content which has been imported from a camcorder by any current/recent version of iMovie. Basically, it is an all I-frame version MPEG-2 video. (I.e., all P- and B-frames have been converted to I-frames to make the video QT edit compatible on systems with iMovie '07 thru iMovie '11 installed.)
