Alternate library - Airtunes and AppleTVs

My iTunes library needs a tidy up as I have a lot of referenced entries with broken links or untagged content.
Thought I would create an alternate library (i.e. database and media files/folders not just the folder of media) on a non-boot internal or external drive, and repopulate from scratch and tidy up along the way.
I couldn't remember in the past if I had to authorise an alternate library again, it would seem not having added a recent music purchase to this from the old library.
Interestingly even though the library name is the same as the other in iTunes Preferences, as well as the top level folder simply being called iTunes as before, the AppleTVs do not appear for syncing/streaming but they are available for Airtunes playback.
Perhaps it's obvious in a way, but this simply reaffirms a previous observation that when AppleTV Devices disappear from iTunes for some reason, these units are still accessible as Airtunes speakers consistent with them using different communication protocols.
Even though all previously registered AppleTVs are listed in the Preferences, they do not appear as Devices - many Preferences seem to be shared between alternate libraries, but clearly some parameter that allows syncing / streaming doesn't, perhaps some unique library ID number. It just seems odd that Devices registered to another library show up, but the actual Devices don't - perhaps AppleTV stores some parameter that does not match to allow the Device negotiation.

Sorry AC, I found it a little hard to follow what it is you observed, it's probably me not you, just finished 2 x 12 hr days doing accounts and my head is pounding.
I'm probably rambling a bit anyway, commenting on things as I find them.
The question, I guess is, does anyone know where the iTunes Device list is actually stored.
The list of devices isn't stored anywhere, they are listed when they become available, if you turn a device of it will disappear from the list (you may need to refresh). They will only appear though if there is a pairing established in preferences (or if the tv is advertising it's services after entering a passcode)
After a bit of delving around the AppleTV device names seem to be in an iTunes plist, but the associatd info is encoded and difficult to decipher.
The list of AppleTVs in Preferences seems to be shared between alternate libraries, so is presumably stored outside of the itunes main folder.
As a result of your observation I'm assuming you are not using an alternate user account.
No I've just opened iTunes holding the option key and created a new iTunes top level folder on an internal non-boot drive.
Each user has a preference file associated with iTunes which is stored in user/library/preferences. Changing the library that is used with iTunes won't change the preferences.
So you would assume, but the AppleTVs registered under another library of the same user account do not appear as devices even though they list under the iTunes>Preferences>AppleTV tab.
If however you were to set up iTunes under another user account, you would have different preferences.
Yes
Interestingly too, as the Devices do not show up in an alternate library without adding them as a new library..........
As I say I don't fully follow that, but if I'm understanding you correctly that shouldn't happen.
Yes, it's odd.
The iTunes Library.xml files have an entry for:
<key>Library Persistent ID</key><string>xxxxxxxxxxxxxx</string>
where the x's are a 'unique' hexadecimal value for each library even under the same user account - I suspect AppleTv itself may use this value to know which libraries it is associated with, though manually editing this value doesn't make devices appear in alternate libraries for the user account.
As for authorisation it is each computer that is authorised. If you set up 16 user accounts on one computer, you could share another computers library 16 times and it would only use up one authorisation.
Just being wary of multiple authorisations on the same computer which can happen I believe.
I recently used the option to reset all (5) authorised computers, which I can't use again for a year and am just being a little cautious.

  • Firewall Message with Airtunes and AppleTV

I am using iTunes 8.02 on a Mac running Tiger 10.4.11. I like to stream my music to my AppleTV (which is running the most recent version of the firmware). My wireless router is an Airport Express (running the latest v6.3 software).
In iTunes, I see a drop down menu showing me my AppleTV. When I select it, I see a pop up warning message:
"Your Computers firewall settings will prevent you from using Airtunes.
    Please check your Firewall settings
Learn More Ignore Open Firewall Settings"
I click ignore and it works!!
But Why am I getting this message?
I have followed the instructions in:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2278
I have even disabled "Stealth Mode" in Tiger's firewall suggested in the forums.
    What am I missing?
Why do I still get this warning message (yet it works when I click Ignore)?

Then I would be wireless from G5 and AppleTV to the internet. But I would loose the AirTunes / Express capability?
You could only have one function at one time. (So you can't use your G5 and Apple TV on the internet while using AirTunes) as (AFAIK) the AirPort express can't be used as a 'wireless access point' at the same time as AirTunes.
    To try and summarize
If you want to use AirTunes and have your computer and Apple TV connected to the same network with internet connectivity at the same time you can:
    1. Purchase an AirPort Extreme base station.
    2. Connect your cable modem to the AirPort extreme via ethernet, set up a WiFI network and connect your G5 and Apple TV.
    3. Join your AirPort express to the AirPort extreme network via client mode.

  • Can I stream and sync from the same itunes library to one AppleTV?

Can I stream and sync from the same itunes library to one AppleTV?

From what I can tell this is a bug.
A very Frustrating bug. When the take 2 update launched I was streaming movies via "shared movies" from my synched computer without any issues. However after a couple of recent iTunes updates all the "shared" menus stopped appearing and I can no longer stream anything from my main computer.
When I open up my macbook though everything streams fine, all the "shared" menus immediately appear.
Numerous restarts, factory resets and reinstalling the 2.0 software have done nothing to help this issue.
If anyone has any more light on the subject it'd be great to hear. Also I'm not sure which update broke it because I went about a month not using the apple tv.

  • Alternate library for ATV content...

The movies and TV shows I have purchased through my ATV are filling up my computer's HD, therefore I need to move them to an alernate library in order to free up space in my computer. I do not want to move my whole library to the time capsule because I want to be able to play my music in my computer when I am not at home. Can this be done?
Also, form here on, when I purchase a movie through my ATV, will it sync to my computer or will it sync directly to the new alternate library in Time Capsule?
    Thanks...!

There is no need to create 2 separate libraries. My set up consists of 2 ATVs, one syncing music and one syncing selected TV Shows. It is also syncing selected audio to a nano and selected audio and video to a touch. My video library is now over 1TB so it will definitely not fit on my MacBook Pro's 200GB drive. Since all the video I want for my weekly 4 day trips will fit on my touch there is no need to carry my external drive with me.
My iTunes Media folder remains on my MacBook Pro's hard drive containing audio files (Podcasts, Music and Audiobooks). All my Movies and TV Show video files live on an external drive. Remove the check beside iTunes Preferences Advance menu's "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library". You can now move all the videos over to the external drive. iTunes will probably lose it's association to them displaying the exclamation mark beside them in iTunes requiring you to delete their entries from here as well. Once they are all transferred over to the external drive and removed from the computer's iTunes Media folder you can add them back into iTunes.
iTunes will recognize the videos when connected to your external drive however display the exclamation mark beside them when the external drive is not connected. Any iPods syncing to iTunes will retain any videos according to you sync settings even though iTunes will display the exclamation mark. Video syncing will return to normal once iTunes is connected to the drive with the movies. Windows users should assign the external drive a drive letter so it doesn't change, Mac users need not worry here.
Now the only real down fall with this set up is new video purchases will need to be transfer over to the external drive and re-added to iTunes.

  • Backing up and restoring library to and from external HD

Newbie to iTunes since I got my iPhone. I'm asked periodically to back up my library to CDs. Can I back up per my question, and in the event of the unthinkable total crash of my Mac can I restore from the external HD? Is there a method to do this or some additional software necessary? I currently copy my iTunes folder to my external HD every time I add anything to iTunes.
    Thanks,
    CD3

Yes, you can restore your music folder from a backup HD. Assuming the backup folder is organized exactly like the original, it would just be a matter of copying the backup folder into the position of the original. You can use a regular file backup program to automate the backup process. SuperDuper! is one; there are certainly others that have their fans.
It's also a good idea to back up your iTunes Library file. A completely functioning iTunes music library is made up of the iTunes Library file and the associated iTunes Music folder. The library file is a directory file and contains vital data about the music library.

  • I am trying to sync my ipod but it keeps saying that a previous library exists and that I can only sync it to one library.  I want to sync it to the previous library but how do I get it to go there?

I am trying to sync my ipod but it keeps saying that a previous library exists and that I can only sync to one library.  I want to sync it to the original library bc that is the one that has all songs.  It keeps giving me a library with just songs that I have bought on itunes.  I never created a new library so I am not sure why it is doing this.  How do I get it to sync to my original library?  I have already tried to restore a previous version of itunes but that did not help.

It appears that something happened to yur computer/iTunes files.  It happens sometimes.  To recovery:
    - Import the old music into the current iTunes library
    - Make sure all the apps are also in the library
    - If in the USA and therplaces where iCloud has benn released you can redownload most iTunes puchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    - You can always redownload apps at no additional cost as long as you are singned into the same iTunes account the originally purchased them.
    - After all the suff in in the iTunes library, make a backup of the iPod by connecting the iPod to the computer and right clicking on the iPOd under Devices in iTunes.
    - Restore the iPod from backup and restore as necessary.

    It's not crap at all.
It's not that simple. For example, I've 3500 songs on my MacBook but don't want them all on my phone, so I have to manually select each song again???
There has to be a solution.
Why not simply make a playlist with the songs you want on the iPhone?
and maintain a current backup of your computer.

  • Photos in Library module and after export look different than in Development module

    Hello,
    I experience a problem.
After I update photos in the Development module, the updates seem not to be shown in the Library module. And when I subsequently export to Flickr, Flickr is also showing the original photo, not the adapted one.
I noticed this the first time after making Blacks a bit deeper, causing a sunflower to become a deeper yellow. I thought that my adaptations were not applied in the Library module. After I checked with cranking down the Saturation all the way back (to almost black-and-white), that adaptation WAS applied in the Library view. So it had to be something else, causing the same color difference between the Library and Development modules.
When I switch from the Library module to the Development module, I see a slight delay in applying my changes, but they are applied. Before they are applied, I can see that the original photo is shown and that looks the same as in the Library module and on Flickr.
The photostrip on the bottom of the Lightroom screen also shows the original photos only, unless I go to the development module and select a photo (adaptations are applied in the photostrip after I select the photo, not before).
After I played a bit more in the Development module, I found something strange in the Camera Calibration menu of the Development module. The Adobe Profile (my default) caused an obvious color difference between the Library (less saturated) and the Development (more saturated) modules. The Camera Standard profile also showed a (very) slight difference, but I was unable to notice the differences using the other profiles.
So I was thinking (but it's only a guess), that the profiles are not applied in the Library view and on export, but they are in the Development module?
    I use Lightroom 5.6, Camera RAW 8.6.
Please help me, as this is very annoying. I currently cannot export my photos to Flickr or anywhere else, unless I overcompensate before exporting. And I really don't want to do that. My Lightroom photo is my perfect photo, and I want to keep it that way...
Many thanks in advance for any help,
    Peter

    Hi ssprengel,
Thanks for your reply. Let me react to each possibility you mention and provide some extra information.
    - "Check your Export / File Settings / Image Format and make sure they are set to JPG not Original". Done that, it's not on Original, but on jpg. This would not explain why I see the difference in the Library and Development modules, by the way. But better to know for sure.
    - "...the most likely thing that is wrong is your color-management on your computer is not working properly". It is a PC with Windows 7. I have been using Lightroom for maybe 6 years and I never had this problem before. The last time I changed my setup is more than a year ago and this problem only started to happen a short while ago (after the update to Lightroom 5.6? I'm not sure, but that's the only thing that has changed lately). I use a Spider to create a custom profile that is correct for my setup and do a regular update on the profile.
    - "what brand and model of monitor do you have?" I have an EIZO FlexScan S2411W and use that for a long time as well. I chose this brand of monitors for its good color reproduction and I have been happy with it for years now.
What I am not getting is why would all this show a difference between the Library and Development module? The only difference is the Lightroom software that is switching from one module to another, and that should deliver the same photo. I'm also stating in my first post that the differences are very noticeable using the Adobe Standard Camera Profile in the Development module. I have a feeling that the profile is part of the problem.

  • Home media server for mac, that you can also get to remotely.  Any ideas?  I am out of space on my macbook pro hard drive and appletv.  Need some sort of media server for delivery to macs, ipods, ipads, etc.  Any suggestions?

    Hi,
I have been using my macbook pro as a home media server, hosting most content on the macbook with ipod touch, ipads, and appletv streaming/sharing content.  I have run out of space on both the macbook pro and the apple tv and am looking to moving the content to a home media server.  Any thoughts/suggestions?  I'd like something that I can access remotely too.  I have an old slingbox and also have a static IP address.
Any thoughts/suggestions would be most welcome!

Don't worry I've sorted it! I just had to turn off Reminders as well in iCloud. Calendar then worked fine, even when I turned Calendar and Reminders back on.

  • TS4213 Why can't iPhoto, Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie access my iTunes Library files and Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie access my iPhoto Library files now that I upgraded to '11?

Why can't iPhoto, Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie access my iTunes Library files and Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie access my iPhoto Library files now that I upgraded to '11?
Examples of what is going on:
    1. In Pages, Numbers & Keynote, when I go to the media browser the Audio section reads "Open iTunes to populate this list" even after iTunes has been opened, .xml file has been replaced/repaired, etc  AND Photo section reads "Open iPhoto to see photos from your iPhoto Library in this list" even after iPhoto Library has been replaced and new default library created.
    2. In iMovie, similar thing ... when I go to add photos or music to a movie the iTunes files aren't present and the iPhoto photos are missing with similar messages as in #1.
    3. In iPhoto, similar thing ... when I go to add music to a slideshow it says to "Open iTunes to populate this list".
It is shocking to me that Apple would let something as simple as a pathway link to associated library files get this messed up on an upgrade, but what's even more surprising is that with the number of people who seem to be having this particular issue (and I can tell from all the research that I've done for weeks online that there are a lot of them) that there doesn't seem to be a single clear answer to fixing it anywhere on these community support forums.  Most of what I've seen is rehashed advice from outdated issues.  What I need is a simple answer to how do we get these programs to look for the correct location of the photo and music files because I sure can't seem to find any logical place to do that through the programs' preferences files or the system preferences window?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    P.S. Here's the details on the software/hardware:
    MacBook Pro
    Mac OS X
    Version 10.7.5
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    iTunes 11.0.4 (4)
    iPhoto '11 9.4.3 (720.91)
    iMovie '11 9.0.9 (1795)
    Keynote '09 5.3 (1170)
    Pages '09 4.3 (1048)
    Numbers '09 2.3 (554)

I have the same problem on a new MacBook Pro. I have not been able to access the iTunes library from iPhoto since I got this computer. I looked in the Preferences file and deleted the com.apple.iApps.plist but there was no com.apple.iApps.lockfile so I just deleted the iAPPs.plist and rebooted the computer.  Still no iTunes available in iPhoto.
All my music is in iTunes and plays. After reading the above I brought up Pages and I was able to access music and insert a track into a document.
    Do you have any suggestions.
