Alternate methods of removing duplicate files

Other than what appears in the help (which seems time consuming when you have to go through 9 gigs of songs) is there another way of removing duplicate files?

Do I understand that your music library contains two identical songs and you want to completely get rid of a duplicate so that the file itself won't be stored on the hard drive wherever you keep your actual music library files?
When I delete a duplicate, a second message box comes up and asks if I want to move it to the Trash. Yes isn't the default but Apple +M does it from the keyboard.

You should back up your drive with Time Machine before you delete any files in case you make a mistake.

Click on the Time Machine browser icon on the dock. Locate the duplicate file you wish to delete and highlight it. Click on the button with the gear on and choose Delete "all backups of".

  • How can I identify and remove duplicate file (audio & photo)

How can I identify and remove duplicate file (audio & photo)?  I have quite a few libraries created as backup files.

    Terence,
Yes, the duplicates appear in the iPhoto window. I have folders with same name occuring two or even three times sometimes with exactly the same set of photos (ie photos with the same ID) and sometimes with a limited set of photos. Other  folders appear only once.
I normally take my MacBook with me if I'm shooting a lot of photos, such as on holiday, and then want to transfer them to my iMac when i get home. Other times I transfer the camera's memory stick directly to my iMac.
I have great difficulty transferring the photos from my MacBook to my iMac. I don't want to store my photos on my iDisk due to the length of time it takes to upload them.
    Thanks again.

  • What is good software to download to remove duplicate files?

What is good software to download to remove duplicate files? Mostly photos.

    Hi Marcusito12,
Theoretically you can use the preinstalled software from Toshiba, the Toshiba Disc Creator. With this tool you can also burn CDs/DVDs.
In my opinion its not necessary to pay for such a software. There are pretty well freeware software to download, like CD Burner XP. Thats my personal favorite, because its a small tool (doesnt need much disk space and RAM), can burn everything and its freeware.
    Check this!!!
Furthermore I use DVD-R mediums from Verbatim and TDK CD-R.

  • Alternate method of removing hard disk from 13" MacBook (aluminium body)?

    Hi,
I've recently encountered the need to replace my MacBook's hard disk but when I tried to do so, the head of the one screw that I was required to remove to get the hard disk out got stripped, even though I was using the right size screw driver. I guess I just wasn't careful enough.
Does anyone know if there's an alternate method for me to remove the hard disk as getting that one little screw out now seems next to impossible without doing real damage to my MacBook?
    Thanks in advance!
    Steve

Best thing to do at this point is take it to a repair shop. They should be able to drill the screw out and even replace it.

  • Remove duplicate files

is there some software out there that will search all of my drives associated with my imac for duplicate files and then give me that option to delete the excess?

    Search macupdate.com for "duplicate".
Also, look at the More Like This section on the right side of this page.

  • Software recommendation to remove duplicate files on HDD?

    Hello everyone
I downloaded Singular for this prupose, but to be honest, it's not done me any good. I have transferred a lot of files over from various external HDDs and disk images, and in Logic Studio actually have duplicate channel strip settings etc which are a real annoyance.
I'm looking for a program that will simply scan my pc and remove any and all dupes I have, whatever format they are.
    Please recommend
    Thanks

Just keep in mind that some users define a duplicate as not the original and some define both as duplicates...

  • Is there a fast way to remove duplicate files from itunes?

I relocated a lot of my music on my computer to a single folder so there would be less clutter. So far as I know there is no easy way to relocate all of my music without going through each song one by one, and I have a rediculous amount of music so this was simply not an option. Instead I dragged everything back into itunes from that folder. Now I have a large number of 'ghost' files in my itunes and I was wondering if there is a fast way to get rid of them all without selecting and deleting them all individually?

I actually have scripts for reconneting moved media, and I could have shown you how to move the library without breaking the links. Normally moving the entire iTunes folder and then shift-starting-iTunes does the trick. Sometimes it is possible to put a broken library back together again.
I'm working on a rebuild of my DeDuper script which will merge stats from missing files before deleting. It's been on the back burner for a while but the lack of show duplicates feature in iTunes 11 has prompted to have another look at the issue so with luck I'll get it done in the next few days. That would be one way to tidy up.
If you just want to remove all the dead tracks right now you can download and install iTunes Folder Watch. Point it at your iTunes Media folder, connect it to your .xml file and enable the option to Check for dead tracks on startup.

  • Easiest way to find and remove duplicate files?

My wife is a photographer and she's terrible at file management. Consequently she has duplicate versions of images stashed all over her almost full hard drive. What is the easiest waty to find duplicates of files so that I can get rid of them? Any freeware out there that does something like that? This would be for her Intel-based macbook pro running Tiger.

Having spent several hours a few days ago organizing files, I was intrigued by your question.
I found Singular which is appears to be freeware, for at least the time being. There's a link on the registration page that will register the application for you — I assume Singular has to be running for that to work, but that's just a guess.
    http://www.emeraldion.it/software/macosx/singular.html
After you run Singular and drop files/folders on it, you can double click a duplicate entry and both versions are displayed.
    Good luck!

  • Quick way to remove duplicate files in iTunes Library folder?

I "consolidated my iTunes Library", which caused iTunes to place duplicate mp3/mp4 files in my iTunes library folder (I assume it copied them all over from my backup drive) which has doubled the size of my iTunes Library folder.
Keep in mind, that iTunes actually shows only one copy of each song/video within the app. It's only that the actual files have been doubled on my hard drive. iTunes is only using half of those files.
Is there a way to quickly identify and delete the duplicated files on my hard drive that aren't being used by iTunes?

This information from Doug should help you decide what you can use.

  • How do I find and locate duplicate files?

What is the process to find and remove duplicate files. The tab is grayed out.   I am using version 13 and have over 1000 files and many of them are duplicates

In unix you can use a combination of ls and diff.
Unfortunately Apple is notorious for creating crippleware, so they have only provided this function in iPhoto and maybe iTunes.  There is no easy Finder solution, such as would make sense as part of Smart Folders!

  • Managing duplicate files, photos etc

What programs can i download for my macbook pro that will check for and remove duplicate files, photos etc? Which are the easiest to use?

You want a program that will compare the actual files themselves, not just by their name.
