Alternative power adapters for the X220

As posted in other threads, there are problems using the "native" Lenovo power adapters with the X220:
- The 65W adapter does not supply enough power, which causes reduced performance.
- The 90W adapter is big and heavy.
- The Ultraslim 90W adapter causes erratic touchpad behaviour.
bender957 recommended the FSP NB L90 90W adapter that, according to his experience, does not suffer from any of the issues listed above.
Unfortunately, that post and others discussing that adapter were removed from the thread they were posted to as off topic, so I created this one to host the discussion.

The SNA 95 has arrived. It's about the same size as the new 90W Dell adapters, so maybe not as small as I was hoping. The Dell adapters struggle to put out 90W without getting dangerously hot though.
The output voltage is 19.5V with no load, so only 0.5V below the rated input voltage of the x220. I've yet to encounter a laptop that can't deal with ±1V. I just can't see anyway they could design a DC-DC converter so badly that it could only take 20V.

I haven't looked at the URL but, if the plug and voltage output are right, you'll be OK.

  • Is it ok to use the other macbook power adapters with the mb air?

I have a few extra power adapters for the Macbook Pro and Macbook. Does anyone know what Apple officially says about plugging one of those into the Macbook Air? I've heard rumors that it's risky and might void the warranty, but I would like to see a direct quote if there is one.
I know those other magsafe plugs are impossible to use if you keep the MBAir on a flat surface, but it's definitely convenient to use a spare Macbook Pro / Macbook power adapter if you put your Air on a laptop stand, or even on a book.

I think we are mixing terms here.
I believe the Macbook Air, Macbook and Macbook Pro power adapters are 45W, 60W and 85W respectively. The power adapters don't push power to the notebooks, the notebooks draw power from the power adapters, Consequently you can always use a higher wattage adapter.
The Macbook and Macbook Pro use different voltages but all the power adapters seem to be able to use each. The Macbook Pro uses 4.6A (amps) and the Macbook uses 3.65A and the Macbook Air 3.1A. Pushing to many amps to a device would ruin the unit, but it seems like this has been planned as you can mix and match all the magsafe adapters today and they all function properly.
I have read that the notebook knows whether it can draw enough power to recharge the battery or only enough to run the computer while it is on and that in the latter case it will charge the battery when the notebook turns off. Whether this is bad for the charger or the notebook is unclear, but since the notebooks seem to respond intelligently in those different situations I think that the apple engineers have planned accordingly. If you draw too much power from the airline adapter for example, the airline adapter will simply stop providing power temporarily and the light will go off for a moment.

  • Why is the power supply for the Mini so big?e

Can anyone explain why the power supply / adapter for the mac mini is so big compared to the power adapters for the macbook? The processor and hard drive for the mini is the same as those for the macbook, so why is the power brick so much bigger? Just curious.

While I doubt anyone who knows for sure will be prepared to pop up and answer, I suspect the reason is two-fold: firstly that the supply is engineered for constant use, 24/7, where laptop supplies are not, and thus it is larger because the components are more rugged and over-specced, and secondly for lowest cost, since it is cheaper to engineer a larger product of this kind than a smaller one, due to the premium cost of the smallest narrow-tolerance components.

  • Can I buy iMac power cables for the UK?

I am moving to the UK from the US and I have several Apple products. I would like to know if I can buy a replacement cable for each of them (iMac, MacBook Pro, Apple TV, MacBook Air) that will fit into a UK power plug. All are fairly recent purchases (less than 2 years old) and I don't want to replace them. I can fit the World converter plugs on my Ipod and iPhone chargers, but they wont fit on the laptop chargers.
    Thanks!
    john olson | mandeville, la

All you need is an UK IEC power cord for the iMac (see image) and adapters for the Macbooks and the Apple TV.
The power supply in iMacs, Macbooks and Apple TV is an auto switching power supply that will accept voltage between 100 and 240V
Any standard european IEC power cord will do, you do not have to by one from Apple, but the Apple one as a extra round plastic part that will fit snugly in the iMac. (see second image)
Using a adapter is also an option for the iMac, but they tend to fit loosely on the US plug and can be more easily disconnected than a real European cord. If you go with only adapters, make sure you get good ones that will fit tightly on the us plug.

  • Aftermarket power adapters for MacBook

I travel a lot and am extremely frustrated by the lack of aftermarket power adapters to support the MacBook on long flights.
This appears to be solely a function of Apple's policy on licensing their "wonderful" power connector!
I consider it a very good reason to NOT buy MacBook computers! If I had known that Apple would restrict the availability of airplane adapters for the MacBook, and would not provide anything themselves, I would have switched back to the dark side and purchased a Wintel machine that I could run for the duration of a cross-country flight!
This is just one of the poor planning issues associated with the MacBook product release (lack of a good travel case to fit the 13" MacBook is another).
There are NO airlines that make 110 volts AC available at seats. There are two standards for 12 Volt DC among the airlines, and most of the aftermarket power adapter vendors have good support for the Wintel and the iBook or PowerBook machines... but nothing for the MacBook!

    Welcome to the discusions!
Apple made a huge deal about the MasSafe adapters, so it is rather obvious that it would take a while for the aftermarket adapters to come out.
That said, there are a ton of power inverters that will allow you to plug your stock MB adapter into them and then into the power adapter on the plane. They are readily available at any place that sells PCs and run less than $40.
Don't so dramatic. It certainly is not a valid reason to not buy a MB at all. Get the inverter - problem solved.

  • When I connect my MacBook Air to iPads through a powered USB hub the power cord for the hub explodes and trips the fuse on the building. I've tried different iPads, cords, power points to no avail.

When I connect my mac air to some iPads through a powered USB hub for VPP/Configurator, the power point for the hub blows out (tripping the fuse in the building). I've tried different iPads, cords, power points and of course hubs. Also the computer has a habit of shutting down when any type of USB device is removed from it. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I've done some experimenting, and this is what I've found out:
    1) The problem persists when I reformatted the USB HDD devices to ExFAT, so the problem apparently wasn't due to NTFS for Mac OS X by Paragon.
    2) The problem persists even when BackBlaze is paused, so I don't think that it's due to BackBlaze.
    3) The internet cuts out as soon as data begins transferring either to or from a USB HDD device and won't reconnected until I eject and unplug the device.
    4) The problem affects data transfers through either USB port.

  • What are the DC power limitations for the ipad.

What are the DC power limitations for the ipad in a car or airplane.  Can I use and recharge the ipad in a car or airplane with a 28 VDC power system?

The iPad charger produces 5V and 1000 mW. You would need an convertor accessory which is compatible with the iPad charging system and produces these output levels

  • Stetting up FTP and SFTP adapters for the same interface

    Experts-
I have a situation in which client has a requirement to setup both FTP and SFTP adapters (from adapetive adapters) for the same interface. They want to have a copy of file locally and also want a file to be sent out securly using SFTP. In my interface which was previously developed they have used one business system and added FTP and SFTP to the same. If try to add new Receiver Agreement it will say that the object already exists as the Interface Mapping is same.
Please send me any suggestions which would resolve my problem

    Hi Hari,
As you cannot create two Receiver agreement using only one receiver interface , please create a new receiver Interface, add that in interface determination step and then assing a different channel to new receiver agreement.
If your requirement is to store the file ,i would suggest write the file in your unix directory using NFS( /usr/sap...). then run a AFT job (if already set up in your landscape) to transfer file securly to target destination. Not sure if its feasible in your case otherwise you can use  SFTP for the secure transfer.
    Best Regards
