Alternative to ADSL nation modem

Until recently I was happily using an ADSL Nation modem with my Airpot Extreme, but I have changed ISP (TalkTalk to O2, UK) and the modem is not compatible with O2.
Does anyone have any reccomendations for an alternative? I'm looking for something fairly solid to cope with office VPN connections. I would like something that doesn't run too hot is possible.

Hi,
As you may guess I don't visit here often but I have just come across your question. You have probably solved your problem by now but on the off chance this is any use to you--I believe the Draytek Vigor 120 ADSL 2+Modem works particularly well with Airport Extreme Base Station.
If you go to the Draytek UK site they give instructions on the ( very easy ) set up to O2.
Cheers.

  • New Extreme/Express updates & ADSL X-Modem

    Hi all,
I have had so many prolems since the failed 5.6 update that I wondered whether to install the 5.7/6/3 at all when news greeted me this morning that it was out. Well, I thought it cant get any worse so went ahead and installed it. Incidentally I use the ADSL X-Modem CE for UK broadband access and this combination has proved to be particularly problematic.
Early results are the installation has gone without a hitch and............. I am connected with no problems! Fingers crossed and this has sorted out the horrendous Airport transmission problems as the signal never did get back to normal after the move back to 5.5.1
Looking at the Airport Client Monitor and the transmission rate is also nice and high at 54mps with just a blip or two. This compares to regular views under the previous setup where the transmission chart resembled a mountain range.
I will test it extensively today but so far, for owners of the ADSL Nation modem, all seems fine.
    Fingers crossed!
    Regards
    Michael

Thanks guys, you just saved me £120. I was about to buy a AEBS off the Apple store online and I certainly don't think it's clear that you have to have a modem as well to make this work. I'd just assumed that I could replace my old Netgear ADSL DG834G wireless router with an AEBS and get a superfast network but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Scanning through these posts it seems like there might be a workaround where I can utilise the existing router - but what's the point? I can get a new Netgear DG834N for £85. I don't mind paying a premium for Apple products but it's either pay £120 for the AEBS, have to set up two routers and have them both lying around with the only advantage being the AirDisk (the only feature I'd really like) or £85 for a simple replacement but with no AirDisk.
I'm not sure that AirDisk is worth £120.
I notice that the Netgear DG834N isn't available in the US - does this mean that US and UK routers are different?
Whilst we're on the US/UK thing - when are movies going to be available on itunes? and what about the iphone - if it's 2.5G and only a 2MP camera, and can't support Java apps (I use the Gmail and Sky By Mobile apps all the time) forget it. It's got to be better than my K800i, then I'd buy one 'in a heartbeat'
Come on Apple - please remember there are non-US customers who WANT to spend money buying your stuff!

  • Connecting a WRT54G2 V1 to a ADSL Ovislink Modem router combo

I am trying to set up my linksy router to a ADSL Ovislink Modem router combo and when I install the CD on the main computer I keep getting this error message
"Error 322- New router or gateway not detected"
I have hooked everything up correctly as the CD has instructed me.  My TV, phone and internet all are on the same package.  I have powered down both th ADSL and my linksys and still not detecting the linksys.  The 1 computer light on the linksys blinks evry now and than and so does the ((( light will blink sometimes too.
I had my cable modem hooked up to it in August and it worked fine and than we moved and the place we moved to has ADSL modem router and I need to hook up my router to get internet as the ADSL only allows one computer to be hooked up through the ADSL one.  So I know there is nothing wrong with my router.
    Any suggestions would be helpful.

If you are trying to setup your router using the setup disk you can exit from the setup and configure all the settings on your router manually.

  • Zoom ADSL X6 modem router

My previous ADSL modem failed (Possibly lightening strike)!
I had no means to get to this list to find a recommended modem, specifically for iChat which I use every day. I went to my local PC World because it was the only place I knew I would get a choice at that time of night, and the only ADSL modem router which mentioned Mac OSX on the box was a Zoom ADSL X6 modem, quite low cost. So I bought one - and it works out of the box.
BUT - it doesn't talk to Safari (3.0 beta). The first page will not load fully, so I had to use Camino.
There is an issue with filling in the ISP details, where the details for the log in to the modem front page gets entered into the ISP log in details. They are different and it takes some work to keep them separate.
Also the Zoom.com company pages do not load correctly in Safari 3 - they are missing the top menu bar so you cannot navigate the site.

    Hi
    Some router/modem's have touble with safari(2 & 3).
They seem to work better with Internet explorer.
I would have liked you to have got a Netgear DG834.

  • I have Adsl 2 modem Rouger which has Wireless G

I have Adsl 2 modem Rouger which has Wireless G option, I had connected my PC laptop & PC Desktop easily using wifi.
But after 3 weeks I am planing to buy macbook Pro, which had built in wifi but Wireless N.
if macbook pro only have Wireless N then I am unable to connect to my modem-router because it signals wireless G (54mbps).
So, to connect to Internet I have to buy separate Airport Basestaion or macbook also have Wireless B/G/N like my PC Laptop.
If so I don't need Airport base staion to be purchased.
Try to solve my quries before I buy Macbook Pro, which will be my first mac in my life.
    thanks

No you will be able to connect to your ADSL Wireless Router.
Wireless N will also connect to G.
You don't have to get a Airport Base Station, but they are nice. You can also get any other Wireless N routers such as Linksys, Netgear, D-Link - all of them will work.
But no fear get your Mac Book Pro it will connect and you will be happy

  • Alternative to HH4 Separate Modem and Router

I'm on a ADSL 8mb G.DMT line and find my HH4 severely lacking in features. Most importantly i need QoS to manage the available bandwidth between users and prevent one device hogging the connection. So clearly i needed a better router.
I already had a spare netgear wnr2200 running dd-wrt custom firmware so it was suggested that i purchase a Huwaei HG612 to go with this. I took this advice, unlocked it so that i could use it with ADSL but found it dropped connection every 1 minute when connected to a router over PPPoE. Theres not many routers that support connecting to a modem over PPPoA so i purchased a Draytek Vigor 120 that was capable of doing a PPPoA to PPPoE bridge. This didnt drop but had packet loss when behind a router.
I havent looked into the causes of these failed attempts but presume its something to do with how BT handles ADSL lines. I did have a vigor 120 working as above on a ADSL line some years ago on the same equipment so this would suggest BT have changed something.
So 2 failed attempts i'm now asking what would be a good separate modem and router to go with my bt adsl connection? What are other people using on BT these days?

There are many good links in the forum with detail. I have a linksys but not that model. So you trying to get 200MOdem >>> Linksys >>>> G5.
If the G5 works directly to Modem then is should be small issue to insert linksys. I had to go to 192.168.1.1 and "config" the Linksys to act as router/wireless ap.
You'll need some datapoints from your ISP and then you can select the wireless settings. Typically DHCP and a security setting, like WPA Personal password. Also change your networks name from Linksys to something else.
It sounds as if your ethernet connection config on the G5 might contain the ISP specific information that now needs to go into the router. Such as connection type...i.e. ppoe and user id password if requireed etc. You would then configure Airport connectivity, primarily just DHCP. (just turn on linksys and then turn on G5 and Airport, you should see your network in the drop down.

  • Why hasn the airport base station still NOT got a adsl/cable modem yet?

I want a all in one apple product
It seems so obvious to me that this product is screaming out to have a modem built in. If it did i'd buy it with out a second thought.
It's exactly the same with apple tv and the mac mini, they should be combined.
Better still combine Apple tv, A mac mini, A modem (Cable or ADSL), Airport and some kind of digital tuner built in. A all in one Media sever/routing box.

  • Connecting Belkin N150 ADSL Router *** Modem with TimeCapsule

I have an N150 Belkin Wireless ADSL modem *** Router. I want to buy Timecapsule for automatic backup (for iPhone, PC, MBP) and to use the Dual Band
    A. Do you recommend buying Timecapsule or going for the cheaper option of an Seagate NAS? (and forgo the dual band)
    B. If you recommend buying, how should I wire the Timecapsule to the Router, so that I can make use of all the features and speed TC provides? Can I connect it in a way that the Belkin Router is used just as a modem and TC actually becomes my primary router

Time capsule is not for backup of iphone.. there is no direct link.. apple uses itunes to backup the iphone, which can be either on your computer or icloud. Time Machine which is the smarts of the system is software in the Mac that will backup itunes to the TC. The TC is a hard disk in a router. .it has no smarts whatsoever.
    A. Do you recommend buying Timecapsule or going for the cheaper option of an Seagate NAS? (and forgo the dual band)
Nobody but you can answer the question. TC is a more reliable unit for TM backup. 3rd party can work but lots of them have issues. Check via google if people have found the seagate NAS reliable for TM.. you need to use the exact model you want to purchase. The TC is not a NAS.. it is a target for TM backups by laptops. If you store files on it, there is no way to backup the files without using another disk, like USB drive plugged into the TC and manually doing the backup.
5ghz is much faster than 2.4ghz but has very limited range.. ie it is for use in the same room and perhaps the next one.. no further than that. For many people buying 5ghz turns out to be a waste of time, unless you can arrange the router in the room you are working in.
    B. If you recommend buying, how should I wire the Timecapsule to the Router, so that I can make use of all the features and speed TC provides? Can I connect it in a way that the Belkin Router is used just as a modem and TC actually becomes my primary router
You can either keep your belkin as the main router.. and just bridge the TC.. that will not hinder its usage at all except for icloud where the TC needs to be the main router..
Or bridge the belkin and use the TC as main router. The ISP must support PPPoE authentication for this to work.. check your ISP.

  • SA 520 and ADSL router/modem

we have 3 sites that i wanteed to conect together using 3 SA520 1 site is cable modem and the 2 other sites are ADSL with a Router /Modem supplied by provider currently each site has a old firewall connected which i had planned to replace. My question is are these suitable for ADSL as well as cable

As long as the ADSL or cable modem has Ethernet ports, they should be able to connect to SA500.
SA500 has 10/100/1000 WAN ports.  The SA500 also support PPPoE.

  • Connecting to net: base station settings for ADSL ethernet modem ?

White Extreme Base Station with built in modem. New Ethernet modem to replace USB modem sent by ADSL ISP (Tiscali - UK). Internet connection worked via the USB modem (without any AirPort stuff) OK, but now I'm trying to replace the USB modem with the Ethernet modem and base station. The Mac I'm setting it up with is connected to the base station via Ethernet not AirPort so I can't use the simple set up assistant software (it requires AirPort connection).
    So this is the goal:
phone line > ethernet modem > ethernet cable > base station > ethernet cable > mac.
I've already got the mac connected to the base station via ethernet fine. It's the base station to the net via the ethernet modem I'm stuck on.
How should the base station settings be, in particular the Internet tab settings in Admin Utility? I think it should set to PPPoE ? I've inserted the user name and password in there but there is no where to put the dial up number I've been given by the ISP (which is "0,38"). This number was needed when I set up the computer to connect using the USB modem (without the AEBS at all).
In the Network system preferences it says the computer is connected to the internet via ethernet, but it isn't because when I try and access a web page it doesn't appear.
    Any quick pointers much appreciated.

Absolutely any suggestion what so ever would be appreciated. I've tried many different things. One of which is on this page: http://www.tarling.info/connect-d-link-ADSL-modem-to-mac-os-x-airport-base-stati on.php which happens to be the same ethernet modem I have but the instructions don't work. On that page I'm told to set the connection to "Ethernet" rather than "PPPoE" in the Internet tab in Admin Utility. I did what the instructions say on that page, setting the base station as specified, then try and access the IP address it says via a browser (this all seems a bit odd to me but I'll follow anything blindly that might work) and the browser tries but then fails to connect to the IP address.
Again, any suggestion would be great
    TIA

  • Alternatives to adsl

We have just bought a house and moved in and out internet is terrible.  0.5mb upload.  My partner is an academic and Im a student that both use cloud services to store our data but it take ages to upload.  We have been used to fibre for the last few years (upload speeds that were faster than our current download speed) and have changed our internet usage accordingly.  Im curious to know if there is any alternative such as fibre on demand (which I find a lot of conflicting information on) to our current predicament.  We are using a raspberry pi to upload files so we dont have to leave our desktops running all night. We are currently on an exchange only connection and we are about 600 metres from the exchange as the cable lies ( I walked it out the other day ).  I can also find no information on possible upgrades, well some confusing information, sometimes it says taking orders and other times says your screwed.

We are indeed connected to the master socket as there is only one socket anyways.
    Here is the connection info

The ping may be a bit higher as this is a big house and Im using a Netgear "router" as a switch to connect stuff in my man cave.  Shouldnt make too much difference tho.

  • Airport Extreme + DM111P (Netgear ADSL 2+ Modem)

    Hello,
Does anyone know how to use perfectly this modem with the Apple Extreme ?
I setup the RFC Bridge mode, setup the AE to connect to internet via PPPoe and set to stay always online. Since I use the DM111P, the AE restart my connection many times a day. Why ?
There is no timeout fixed on the AE...
The DM111P is able to manage the connection itself (PPPoe mode) but in PPPoe mode its DHCP server cannot be disabled and i want to use my AE as router/dhcp, not the DM111P.
    Thanks a lot

Seems to be fixed since I downgraded to 7.2

  • WRT54G and adsl dumb modem and vista

Hey everyone, i recently bought a new dell laptop m1710 with windows vista. I didn't want the vista cause i knew it still has issues but was not able to downgrade, but anyways with my bitlord client v1.1 and also tested v0.53, if i download a few files in like 5-10 minutes my wireless goes limited or no connectivity. I tried port forwarding my bitlord program but still had issues, disabled user account control, windows firewall and defender, just have avg installed. tried different combos but still goes limited or no connectivity. i have yet to call windows if theres a fix for this but wondering if it could be my linksys..like a certain setting but the thing is that my older brother has a vista laptop and has no issues with his bitlord client...using same settings and same client. it just seems something is blocking me from downloading/uploading a certain amount and then cuts me off but i cant find anything in vista security/firewall setting that could be causing it. if anyone can lead me to the right direction that would be great. thanks.

Seems to be a PC concern.. anyway a temporary fix might be to assign a static IP and DNS on your PC on the wireless network...
If you need detailed instructions on how to do this just holler...

  • 10.3.7 USB ADSL Modem blues

    Hi
I have a SpeedTouch USB ADSL modem that works beautifully under OS 9, but - in spite of downloading the OS X drivers - I can't get the darn thing to connect under OS X...any ideas?
The modem seems happy (all lights up and steady) so the prob seems to be with the mac connecting to my ISP's server...it uses a PPP server connection, so username and pass plus the ini strings are all the info I have...
    HELP!

Just to add my 2 cent's to ADSL Nations excellent advise.
For whatever reason $$$ Many of the UK and Europe Internet Service Providers opt to use USB Modems and as already stated they are and can be a nightmare.
I suggest you 1st get in touch with your Internet Service Provider and see if the will furnish you with a Ethernet ADSL Modem.
If not they are readily available from just about any computer store.
I do suggest you spend a little extra and go for a Multi-port and if you have the need you can also go for a combined Wireless Modem Router.
    Hope this helps

  • Can I replace a home hub with a decent adsl modem?

I have several PCs, laptops, an internet TV, a couple of apple TVs, ipads, phones etc in my house and am fed up with them not communicating properly.
So after reading how reliable they were, and given the fact I have somehow become an apple fanboi without meaning to, I opted for an airport extreme.
The intention is to use this to create my wireless network & have the homehub just deal with the broadband... sadly it seems this is not possible. I can't disable the wireless on the homehub and supposedly I need to have it to deal with assigning IPs.
I could live with this if it works, but it still causes issues - computer to computer communication is flawless, as I hoped, but the internet is patchy.
I am sooo fed up with this it is not true - not including the time wasted with homeplug networking & airport express too - I want to bin the POS that is the home hub and have complete control over my setup. I don't need a stupid broadband phone and I don't use FON!
Can I buy an adsl modem that does nothing except get my broadband into my airport extreme network?
Alternatively is it worth me hassling BT until they give me a homehub 3 - is this any better?
    Cheers.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I did take a quick glance at the manual and it seemed to do what you need, but it may be worth taking a closer look yourself, its on the TP-Link website.
The only issue I can possibly see, is the PPP authentication.
Normally the home hub will authenticate internally using PPPoA, this will bring up the Internet connection.
If you are using the TP Link as purely an ADSL modem, then your Airport Extreme will be authenticating using PPPoE.
I am not 100% sure whether that will bring up the PPP session. It would certainly do on an Infinity connection, but I have never tried it on an ADSL only modem.
I would imagine that is should work, as the modem will be bridging the connection from the ATM side.
You can use a PPPoE user name of [email protected] and a password of bt
