Alternative to Apple TV for composite video

Like 80% of Americans, I don't have a high-definition TV. My TV only supports composite video input (a yellow RCA plug) or analog coaxial input.
I had hoped to be able to use an Apple TV to watch video purchased from the iTS on my TV. It appears that this is not going to be supported, and that the necessary adapters would be far too expensive. So I'm looking for alternatives. Any suggestions?
A solution would need to support playback of FairPlay-protected media. I'd also prefer something relatively inexpensive -- $400 or less. And convenience is important -- I could just buy an iPod and move it between my desktop and my TV, but that's more manual work that I'd prefer, and doesn't have an on-screen interface (as far as I know).
I appreciate any suggestions. My impression from comments I've seen elsewhere is that I'm not the only one in this situation.

PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Let's not forget that if you use a good ole mini-to-vga adapter (Apple brand or other), you could connect an iPod, by way of the head phone jack, to composite RCA plugs on the TV. The Apple cord is 6-ft long, but longer cords (or extensions) should be available. The cost would be $20. I can tell you that shows from iTunes can look and sound great when played from an iPod to a TV when using such a cord. My TV is a 32" LCD (an inexpensive Protron model). The resolution for composite connection is standard 480 interlaced but it looks surprisingly good. I'd say nearly as good as a decent DVD player. With a video iPod, you would have portability, and the possibility of future devices (e.g., docks) that will come closer to providing functions that you really want.

  • Volume control when using Apple TV for playing video

    Hi,
I'm using a pair of active speakers with no built in volume control with my Apple TV. When using the ATV for streaming audio (for example Spotify) I can control the volume with the iOS device I'm using as the source, but not while streaming video. Why is that, and, is there anything I can do about it?

does the sound on the pad work for face time when you are using in on the pad, with no apple tv involved?
If so - apple tv uses a ton of resources.  Facetime uses a ton of resources.  facetime over the TV is hit or miss.
doulble tap the home button, and see what is in the rask bar.  Close off everything else by touching and holding an icon until they jiggle, the close them by touchinmg the minus sign.

  • Rocketfish adaptor or Apple TV for steaming videos from Safari to tv?

I have a mid 2012 Macbook Air and I want to be able to stream what I am watching on Safari (youtube, dishanywhere, amazon instant video, etc) on my tv via my macbook. Will the Rocketfish thunderbolt to HDMI adaptor do the trick or will I need Apple TV to do this?
    Thank you.

  • Apple TV for HD video presentation

    Hey everybody.
I'm editing a 10 minute HD film that will be displayed at a booth in an expo. I'd love to avoid authoring it to a DVD- a standard def especially- so one idea I had is using my Apple TV (which I recently purchased).
I know that it unfortunately can't loop videos, so I'll have to make one long quicktime, which I don't mind doing.
    So my questions are these:
I'm not sure if there will be internet at the convention center (although I would be shocked if there wasn't). If not, is there any way to store the movie on my Apple TV and play it directly without iTunes?? This might be a silly question, but I did look around a bit for an answer with no results.
If there is internet should I be aware of any hiccups that might occur??
Could I run more than one TV off a single Apple TV by using the component and HDMI at the same time?
If all else were to fail, would an iPod work?
Basically I'm trying to find the easiest/most stable method for displaying an HD 720p quicktime movie. Exporting out of Final Cut via Compressor to an HD H.264 quicktime looks good and is so EASY!!
If anyone has any advice I greatly appreciate it.

Yes, merely sync the movie to the TV internal drive.

Not if you have a good connection. Question, why do you need an internet connect? Do you plan to show trailers or YouTube files?

Believe some users have indicated that both lines are simultaneously active but I have no personal experience with such. Would personally be more likely to use a dedicated distribution box if I were planning to output to multiple monitors simultaneously.

Not for an HD source file.

  • Why can't the APPLE TV use AIRPLAY SPEAKER-OUT for movies/videos?

I can't find one good explanation on why the Apple TV can't use the Airplay Speaker-Out for Movies/Video content; only for audio/music. Does anyone have any insight into this?
For example, I have a video on my Macbook Pro (or my iPad or my iPhone) and I can stream the video via the Airport Express to my 2nd gen Apple TV, but I can't stream the audio of this video from my Apple TV back to the Airport Express and the speakers attached to it. If I had digital speakers connected to the Apple TV I assume it wouldn't be an issue, but at the moment, I only have analog speakers connected to the Airport Express... and I CAN do this with music only content, but then it becomes silly because in that case, I can just as easily stream music directly to the Airport Express from my chosen device (iPhone, et al.) without going through the Apple TV, but for video/movies, you need the Apple TV for the video; yet you can't use the Speaker-Out for the audio of that video and it just doesn't make sense, unless I am missing something...
Any help is greatly appreciated (a google search came up with nothing useful at all.)

It's not a flippant answer, no-one here will know for sure why Apple have chosen to do this. So in light of the fact that you won't get a definitive answer here, I suspect it doesn't matter because you aren't going to change anything, you just need to accept it.
FWIW, I don't think licensing issues have anything to do with it. I think Apple expect you to have a sound system connected by either HDMI or optical and on that basis any connection via an airport express would be in another room and why would someone in another room want to listen to a movie without being able to see it.
Apple differentiate themselves from others by providing features that everyone wants, they don't cripple their creativity by catering for the few like other companies. I'm sorry but I suspect you are one of the few here.

  • Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter

I have just purhased a new Macbook. My first mac ever
My question is regardng the Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter.
Do I read that correctly that I can hook my macbook up via rca and s-video but not composite? Does Apple make one cable that will do both?
I would like the ability to hook up to a projector which will likely be composite. As well RCA/S-video via t.v or DVD inputs.
    Thanks
    Tig

For VGA you will need the Mini-DVI to VGA adapter. For composite video you will need the Mini-DVI to video adapter. If you want sound while using the video adapter you will need a 3.5mm to rca stereo cable. This is a y cable like this Example of 3.5mm to RCA Y cable
FYI the RCA output on the video adapter is composite video.

  • Composite Video Output

How do you play itouch in a docking station calling for composite video?

    Here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1454
Apple says only 1G,2G and 3G iPods are compatible with Composite and Component.
I recall the before iOS 6, the 4G was compatible with Composite and Component.

  • USB interface to composite video and audio

I've been searching a long time for a compatible, low cost and convenient capture device for composite video and audio. The EasyCap devices are super cheap, but their audio section is just horrid. Others won't provide audio usable by Adobe Connect. The EZCap 116 seems to work very well with Adobe Connect, providing a single USB cable connection that carries both audio and video. To get it to work with Skype you need to use Splitcam. the only reminaing annoyance is that you have to use the bundled software each time you want to get the device to use composite or S-video inputs. Sure wish the Flash module would let you configure webcam settings directly.
My main application for the gadget is to interface our institutional VC codecs (which have VCR outputs) to Adobe Connect users.

Studio X: Doh!, you beat me, with your maximally cryptic reply!

  • Options for VGA to S video/ composite video over Mini displayport

I have a mid 2009 13" macbook pro that i want to connect to a standard def tv with s video and composite inputs. I already own the mini displaport to VGA adapter. I have found two adapters on amazon that convert VGA to s/composite video. one is $4 and is just a cable. The other is a $40 box with vga input and video output. my question is, do i need to shell out for the expensive one or will the cheap cable do just fine? i have heard NTSC out a lot while poking around. does my computer have that?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Hello, I am first time forums user and a new mac owner.
What I am having trouble with is a very similar thing but I have a brand new macbook pro 17 so I am pretty sure my connector is slightly different. I found this...
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9319G/A
This seems to be a connector which comes out of the mini-dvi port and has a connector for rca/svideo. I have a mini-dvi to vga that I bought with the mac and then I have an old vga to rca/s-video connector cable like the cheap option the original poster gave.
My mac responds as it should but the tv signal is totally screwed up. I also tried hooking it to a projector using rca and that said no signal. The mini-dvi port to vga works but I am not 100% on the vgs to rca connector I haven't used it in so long. It is going to be a pain for me to test it though.
Should this work? DO I need to mess around with refresh rates?
    Thanks

Yes - it works very well

  • Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter for eMac ?

    Hi,
I use an Apple Mini DVI to VGA on my eMac to expand my monitor space, connect to an old Pinceton 15" lcd, both are on 1024 x 768 res in millions colors, and work fine.
My question is I have plan to buy an Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter since some of my project require a transfer process to an old vcr or Sony TRV-27 mini dv cam.
Would the adapter compatible for my eMac mini DVI port ? because eMac is not mentioned as apple compatible for this adapter at apple store, yet there is a review said it work great on ones eMac.
Anybody else using this adapter that would share with me ?
    Thank you.

look like it is indeed an apple mini vga adapter that I use, and now I need an adapter that allow me to connect to a TV, VCR or Mini-DV camcorder.
will that Apple Mini-DVI to Video adapter compatible to my eMac. Or do they have mini-vga to video adapter on aapple store.
    Thank you any information.

  • DVI to s-video/ composite Video Adaptors- diff b/w 2 Apple products?

I am trying to get information regarding the difference between 2
    Apple display accessories.
    - Apple PAL DVI to Video Adaptor -Apple part number MA026ZM/A
    - Apple DVI to Video Adaptor -Apple part number M9267G/A
The second is not just an NTSC version of the first, in that it
supports both PAL and NTSC - and apparently the Pin outs are
different for both. I am trying to work out which will give a better
result for PAL video output (interlace timings etc). Kbase articles
just say that M9267G/A supports both NTSC and PAL and that MA026ZM/A
supports PAL. It seems strange that the PAL item exists if the other
adaptor supports PAL also ? Apple Australia say they don't know.
    thoughts ? thanks in advance

Apple's video adapters have a ROM chip inside them with EDID data contained within the ROM. That is one thing that will definitely be different between the two. The NTSC and PAL version (M9267G/A) gives priority to NTSC. This could cause problems in a PAL country. If you hooked a PAL TV up using this adapter, you might get a rolling (non-synced) screen and you'd have no good way to recover since the image on the screen would be unusable.
I don't think one adapter would have any advantage over the other in terms of PAL picture quality. It would just be a question of compatibility as outlined above. That's my best guess.

I have not yet seen any official response to the question: "Is the Apple AV Composite cable fully supported with 30pin connector devices upgraded with iOS7 - specifically ? - eg. iPad 2, iPhone 4, iPhone 4s"
If it is not currently supported is that then due to a bug / oversight and in that case is it something that will be fixed in the near future?
Please let us know what feedback you got from asking Apple support.

  • What is the best Apple notebook for video editing and pro music creation?

What is the best Apple notebook for video editing and pro music creation?
I know I could opt for the most expensive and probably get what I want that way, but I´m not made of money, so what are your suggestions for minimum criteria and which would you recommend?

MacBooks Pro are great Macs with a good hardware, so all of them will work for the use you want, but I think that you want the biggest display possible because of your uses. In this case, it has to be a 15-inch non-Retina MacBook Pro, with the settings you want. Note that, after buying the Mac, you can upgrade the HDD and memory without voiding the warranty, so you are free to install as much memory and the HDD size you want after buying it. It's my opinion, but you are free to do whatever you think it's better
