Alternative to Apple TV?

Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone knows if any of the movie download services will work with MacOS. I would buy Apple TV but I don't have a widescreen TV so I'm looking for an alternative that I can use until I get one.
Thanks
Bryan

You can play video files into an ordinary TV with an iPod if you have the composite A/V cable that plugs into the iPod headphone jack.

  • Alternating blinking Apple icon and low battery indicator

My nano has been displaying an alternating blinking Apple icon and a low battery indicator. I have tried to reset it, but it doesn't change. I have connected it via USB to my computer for several hours, and I have connected it to an AC charger for a couple hours. Still no change.
    Any ideas?

    1. Reset iPad
    2. Try another wall socket
    3. Try another cable (make sure it's an original Apple cable)
    4. Try another charger (make sure it's an original Apple charger)

  • Alternative to Apple TV for composite video

Like 80% of Americans, I don't have a high-definition TV. My TV only supports composite video input (a yellow RCA plug) or analog coaxial input.
I had hoped to be able to use an Apple TV to watch video purchased from the iTS on my TV. It appears that this is not going to be supported, and that the necessary adapters would be far too expensive. So I'm looking for alternatives. Any suggestions?
A solution would need to support playback of FairPlay-protected media. I'd also prefer something relatively inexpensive -- $400 or less. And convenience is important -- I could just buy an iPod and move it between my desktop and my TV, but that's more manual work that I'd prefer, and doesn't have an on-screen interface (as far as I know).
I appreciate any suggestions. My impression from comments I've seen elsewhere is that I'm not the only one in this situation.

    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Let's not forget that if you use a good ole mini-to-vga adapter (Apple brand or other), you could connect an iPod, by way of the head phone jack, to composite RCA plugs on the TV. The Apple cord is 6-ft long, but longer cords (or extensions) should be available. The cost would be $20. I can tell you that shows from iTunes can look and sound great when played from an iPod to a TV when using such a cord. My TV is a 32" LCD (an inexpensive Protron model). The resolution for composite connection is standard 480 interlaced but it looks surprisingly good. I'd say nearly as good as a decent DVD player. With a video iPod, you would have portability, and the possibility of future devices (e.g., docks) that will come closer to providing functions that you really want.

  • Budget alternative to Apple Wireless Keyboard?

Because of my current apartment set up, my computer is rarely in a position where a corded keyboard will suffice anymore. The cords are just too troublesome and even with a USB extension cable, it's not long/free enough for me. So I've turned my head towards wirless keyboards, and I have a few questions.
    1. What is a good budget alternative to the Apple Wireless Keyboard (AWK from now on)that will run in OS X? By budget, I mean cheaper than the AWK, and preferably with a bluetooth adapter included (though this is a negotiable term). Those designed for Windows that still work with Mac are acceptable, as I believe that this software (http://gnufoo.org/ucontrol/ucontrol.html) should alleviate the alt/windows key problem.
    2. Do I need the D-Link Bluetooth adapter to use the AWK, or are cheap alternative such as the following possible candidates?

    3. While browsing, I came across a Keyboard/Trackball combination which claims to work with Macintosh. I tried to locate a review that could confirm or deny it, but was unable to. The product is this:

Does anyone have any experience with a wireless keyboard+trackball, and would they recommend it?
I just want to know all of my options before I purchase a new keyboard.

  • Are there one-key alternatives to apple-down and apple-up?

Having come from a Windows and Linux background, one of the most frustrating things about moving to OSX has been the Finder shortcuts for 'open' (apple-down) and 'go to parent dir' (apple-up). I can't for the life of me imagine why the two most common operations in a file browsing app require a two-finger key combo.
Are there any single key alternatives for these commands, or is there a way to set them up? The backspace/enter behaviour of Windows is what I'm really after.
I find it amazing that both enter and spacebar on OSX are bound to the 'rename file' function, which has to be about a zillion times less common in use than 'open this file'.

    System Preferences/Keyboard & Mouse/Keyboard Shortcuts/
Click on the + sign to add a new shortcut
In the Application dropdown choose Finder.app
In the Menu Title box type - Open (or any other command as show in an application's menus)
Choose a key - I used F2 as it didn't seem to be used.

  • Alternatives to apple TV???

I'm still trying to find the right media streamer and apple tv is one of the ones i have on my list for considerations to buy.
But i'm just trying to see what alternatives there are that people have looked at getting and what was better or worse than the apple tv.
I have got a xbox 360 and could buy a hard drive and connect straight to that. The 360 is a media player.
What i want to know is why should i get the apple tv instead? what makes that a better alternative to just buying and external hard drive.
Thanks for your help and advice.
    Cheers
    Matt

no you don't need two appleTVs... you can have one account as the primary/synced&streamed and one as a secondary/streamed only... i think you can have up to 5 secondary computers or accounts connected.
one of the things i really like is that syncing is not even necessary... i stream all of my content to my appleTV rather than syncing.. i find syncing really bothersome.
my wife and i have are own account on our one computer... she has her music, movies and playlist and i have mine.. if either or both of us is logged onto our computer we see our content, playlist, photos etc..
yes everything must be added through iTunes... what makes this so bad?

  • Alternatives to Apple Bluetooth Keyboard

I want to use a bluetooth keyboard at home as I don't really like the keyboard of my 17inch MBP.
However, I don't like the typing on the Apple wireless keyboard either.
Are there any alternative bluetooth keyboards out there for Apple, which you can recommend?

    Hello sula:
I suggest you do a Google search and perform your research that way. Alternatively, you could look at a web site that carries Mac compatible devices. You indicate you "don't like" Apple keyboards. That is subjective and someone else's opinion would not address your issue.

  • Alternatives to Apple Mail

Running Apple Mail is nothing but a headache since updating to Mavericks.
What are the suggestions for an alternative email client?  I've looked at Entourage and Thunderbird.  Frankly, I like the feel of Apple Mail better.
But I am having far to many problems with Apple Mail jumbling my various account's servers and settings.
Are there other email clients available that are reliable?
    Thanks

If you have POP accounts you don't want to use Outlook 2011 for Mac.
Recommended: If you don't have Time Machine, backup your Mail folder by making a duplicate or copy to another location before doing the following.
    Option 1) Re-index Mail.
Go to your User's Library folder. (if you don't know how to find, see this link http://www.needhelp4mac.com/2013/11/how-to-enable-users-library-folder/.)
    Scroll to Mail folder.
Select the V2 > MailData folder.
Delete any files in MailData with envelope in the name. (should be 3)
When you open Mail it will re-index your files.
Removing accounts is not required, but for Gmail it's often the best option. Using Gmail with Mavericks Mail.
    http://www.needhelp4mac.com/2013/12/use-gmail-with-mavericks-mail/
Option 2) This will nuke your current settings.
The following steps are similar to testing in a new User.
    1)  Go to your User's Library folder. (if you don't know how to find, see this link.) Do steps a,b,c
    a) Scroll to Mail folder.
Rename Mail OLD. [When you open Mail it will create a new Mail folder. You can revert to this folder if needed by removing OLD from the name. You would need to rename the "new" Mail folder first.]
    b)  Go to Containers in the User's Library folder.
    Delete the com.apple.mail folder.
    c)  Go to Preferences in the User's Library folder.
If you find any com.apple.mail.plist files, delete these.
    2) Log out under the Apple in the Menu bar. Log in.
    3) System Preferences > Internet Accounts > Delete all accounts.
    4) Open Mail.
    5) Enter one account at a time. Test to be sure you are connected before adding other accounts.
If you have Gmail, be sure you have the All Mail folder selected to sync. Workarounds we previously used no longer work in Mavericks. You might need to go into your Gmail Settings in your browser to make the necessary changes. See this article for help:
    Use Gmail with Mavericks Mail
    http://www.needhelp4mac.com/2013/12/use-gmail-with-mavericks-mail/
If you have POP account you can import the "On My Mac" folders from the Mail OLD folder. If you have "leave on server" selected for your POP accounts, Mail will download all the old messages from the server. Compare the imported mailboxes to the Inbox and delete the duplicates. If you have moved messages to subfolders, I suggest you log into your account with your browser and move the old messages to a folder you create online. POP only downloads messages in the Inbox.

  • Alternatives to Apple Support Communities

I realize there will be growing pains as we all adapt to this new format and I have read all the detailed explanations for why the changes were made, but that still doesn't change the fact that until improvements are made, the new format is just a small step from useless if you have a problem now.
I have had moderate success in the past with the forums at macrumors.com and even macfixit (cnet), but I was wondering if anyone had any luck elsewhere and if anyone new of another source for help from users and peers?
In the past, the discussion groups at apple were an amazing support system that helped me reslove issues fast and accurately. Questions posted were answered almost immediately and I could search back years for information and perspective on all Apple products current and retired. I didn't always like the answers, (reinstall the system) but I knew I was getting good advice.
I have two nagging but minor issues that in the past I would have had answers to in moments, but that I will now likely have to live with because I can no longer search productively or intuitively.
I wish Apple success with this new format and I hope it improves soon enough not to lose the faithful, but until then, any alternatives?

The new search system still returns years worth of information and does so much better than the old system did.
AFAIK, both the old & new versions use the open source Apache Lucene search & index engine. The only difference I can see between the old & new implementations is in the old one client searches were somewhat context sensitive, so unlike with the new one you were not searching the entirety of the site's content by default.
For instance, in the old system if you were in a forum's list view, searches by default searched only in that forum. This typically gave more relevant results than the current site-wide search scope if you knew which forum to search.
However, compared to Google's sophisticated search algorithms running on its massive data farms, both the old & new Discussions search systems are crude & pathetically slow. Much better results with far less effort can usually be achieved by using Google to search this site: just append the Google search with "site: discussions.apple.com" to limit it to searching this site.

  • Cheap alternative to Apple World Travel Adapter Kit?

The Lenmar World Travel Adapter Plug Set is only $8.64 on Amazon:
    http://www.amazon.com/Lenmar-AC5-World-Travel-Adapter/dp/B00013BL18/ref=wlit_dpo?ie=UTF8&coliid=IYUGMO3LZMVRI&colid=32VC09BIR8RXB
    Will this work?
    Thanks!

You will notice that the adapters shown in the illustration at the Amazon link are for two pronged plugs. They are also not designed for keyed plugs.
The Apple Charger for the iPad has 2 prong, un-keyed plug which is OK, the long cord version has a standard 3 prong plug which will require a adapter in front of the adapter.
Sets like the one you reference handle most countries, there are some odd-balls.
Sites like [*this one*|http://kropla.com/electric2.htm] have all the gory details by country.

  • Cheapo alternative to Apple Lightning to USB Camera Adapter for audio interface?

I am getting an audio interface (Steinberg UR44) which can be controlled with an iPad via the Apple Lightning USB Camera Adapter and a standard USB printer cable (Type A male  to type B male), but I am too cheap to buy the ridiculously overpriced Apple adapter, so I am wondering if the following will work instead:
iPad --> Apple lighting male to USB Type A male cable (the standard charging cable) --> USB Type A female to Type B male adapter --> Audio Interface
Other adapters are available for USB Type A female to Type B micro or mini male, so the same kind of arrangement might work for cameras.
The adapters are five bucks or less vs. thirty for the RIDICULOUSLY OVERPRICED (yes, I know, I already said that) Apple adapter.
I am thinking this is a better way to go than a cheap unlicensed knockoff lightning adapter, because the critical part of the connection (the lightning plug and electronics) would still be made by Apple.
Has anyone tried the above with either an audio interface or camera?

Because it was designed for use with the iPad. Apple makes no claim that it will work with an iPhone.

  • Alternative to Apple 24"

    Hello all,
I am planning to order a new MacPro (2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 6GB Ram, 1TB HD, ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB) and intend to use my old 20" Cinema Display with its iSight.
Ideally I would like to get a HD resolution 24" display too (for family RAW photo and HD video work), so am considering a Samsung model. Does anyone have any recommendations? If Samsung, which one? Or does another vendor (Dell?) have a better performance/price competitor? I was looking at around $500 max. Thanks.

i'm in the market for a good 24"+ display too. i've been feverishly searching the internet for suggestions an reviews. i've been buying apple displays for years but i've decided that this time around i'm going to look elsewhere.
right now i'm seriously considering a NEC display. specifically the NEC 24" MultiSync LCD2490WUXi, 26" MultiSync LCD2690WUXi2, or 30" MultiSync LCD3090WQXi. i leaning toward buying two 26-inchers.
    http://www.necdisplay.com/Products/Product/?product=8899a96d-28dc-484f-a4de-1430 9a636738
i'm trying to find out if this display will work without issue with the new nehalem mac pro with an ATI HD4870 i have on order. i've read that these professional NEC displays are very high quality in terms of color purity. and they cost just a little more than apple's 24" and 30" cinema displays. they also include, though, a 4 year warranty with the option of extending that 2 more years on particular NEC displays. you can't beat that. do some research and you'll be really surprised.
    good luck!
