Alternative to Monster Cable TOSlink cable?

Any chance there's a cheaper mini-to-optical cable out there that takes advantage of the AX's optical output?
I understand Monster's mini plug has an optical connector at the end so you're getting true optical-to-optical connectivity.
I'd really rather pay less than $40 for a single cable instead of the full amount for three cables, including two I don't need, but fear that other mini-to-optical cables (if they exist) would only allow analog-to-optical connectivity (in other words, the mini end would not have the optical tip).
If indeed such a single cable (and cheaper) option exists, links would be appreciated.
Thanks...

You can use an optical cable with a mini connector at one end and a Toslink connector at the other, or you can use an optical cable with Toslink connectors at both ends and a Toslink to optical mini adapter. Here are a few examples:

  • IPhone TV out w/ iTV Link Monster Cable

Purchased the Monster Cable iTV Link, how do I set my iPhone to use this for watching my movies on my TV? I cannot find any info in the user manual. Please help.

Yes, that is what you need (they also sell a similar, component out cable. I have both of them and they work great).
If you feel like spending another $50 (g) you might want to consider the universal dock as well:
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=5B5 90630&fnode=standard/home/shopipod/ipod_accessories/cablesdocks&nplm=MB125G/A
When you plug in the composite video cable to this and then dock your iPhone you can control the playback via the supplied remote. It only does stop/start and FF FB, but it's still very handy for controlling what you see from across the room. It's also easier to simply dock the phone rather than try and connect the composite cable to it.
I bought two of them to pair with my composite and component cables, and it's very very cool to watch videos from your phone on a large TV (I have one connected to a 38" TV and the picture is every bit as good as DVD). The slideshow also works, along with YouTube (but nothing else, so don't think you can simply view Safari through this).

It could just be a compatibility issue.  Have you tried resetting the Nano with everything connected to see if that makes a difference?
To do this, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.

  • Is there any alternative to Thunderbolt Cable?

Well, I simply can't afford £25/35 for a cable....its rather expensive for a stundent, especially when it is just a cable. So i would like to know if there are any alternatives to that?

Its NOT "just a cable" it has inline controllers at each end.
What is it  you want to connect as all current Macs do have USB 2 or 3 as well.

    Hi,
Have you considered getting an USB adapter for the Console cable?
I had to get that for my first work laptop since they happened to order a model without the serial port. For the most part it worked just fine.
I guess depending on your PIX configurations you might be able to boot it up and attach a PC directly to it and manage it.

  • No signal when using Monster Cable HDMI

I have one of the newer upgraded Moto set tops and a Sony Bravia LCD. When I connect with 6 foot Dynex cable the signal is fine. However when I swap it for a 25' Monster HDMI cable there is no signal (HD or SD). The same TV works just fine with a PS3 and an AppleTV using that Monster HDMI.
Is there a handshake issue or some other compatibility I am missing? I am running the latest firmware on the TV and
    thx for any assistance.

So a regular hdmi cable works but a monster doesn't?
I would just return the monster,   With HDMI There is no difference between the 2 dollar hdmi cable and the monster.
Notice that a 6 foot (Dynex) works and a 25 foot (Monster) doesn't.  The problem is most likely that the cable box can't drive the capacitance of the 25 foot cable (all cables have a characteristic capacitance per foot which can limit the length a signal can be driven).  Agree that Monster is not worth the exorbitant price and places like monoprice.com that sell inexpensive cables which are just as good if not better.

  • Loose rca connection with monster cable

Just bought a universal dock to hook up to my home stereo receiver. And a Monster iCable for iPod Stereo. The RCA plugs are loose as a goose! They don't fit snugly into the receiver input connections. Weird. I thought this was plug & play.

RCA cables have this happen sometimes. Either return the cable to where you bought it and ask for a different one. Or you can pinch the ring to make it fit a little tighter. You can see where the splits are that allow it to expand when plugged in. These get loose. Just use your fingers and pinch it back so there is not as much gap in the ring.

  • Monster cable itv link

    Hi
I was just wondering if I can use the MonsterCable iTV Link wire to connect my MacBook to a television like I used to do with my iBook G4 14"? Do I need some sort of adapter?
    Thanks.

    Hi.
I have problems with connecting the cable.
The cable i have used to connect straight into the audio jack and mini-VGA (as I've learned here) of my iBook. which looks like this:
    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/2/2b/Mini-VGA.jpg/300px-Mini-VGA. jpg
My MacBook has a port, but I understand it is a mini-DVI port like in this picture
    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/4f/Kobushi-mini-dvi.jpg/30 0px-Kobushi-mini-dvi.jpg
So I guess I need some sort of mini-VGA to mini-DVI adapter.

  • Monster iTV Link Cable

    hey there all,
just been reading some posts & thought i'd pass this along. i've been using a Monster Cable to connect my MacBook to my Olevia 26" 16:9 LCD HD monitor/TV. it's the iTV Link cable for the old 12" PowerBook, which also had video out over a mini-DVI connector. the cable is 10 feet long, has a mini-DVI + 1/8" stereo plug on the Mac end & an S-Video + 2 RCA plugs on the TV end. i've set my MacBook for extended desktop & use the external monitor w/ Final Cut Express to display the Canvas. i know it's not the greatest for "real serious work" but to be able to be in bed & work on a project from an external FW hard drive as opposed to going downstairs & firing up the "Big Mac" it's pretty cool, also for watching a DVD on the bigger screen. & once i set the extended desktop it's easier to work in FCE as opposed to sending signal over firewire to my cam/deck then to a TV, because the MacBook sees the TV as 2nd computer display(it shows the desktop wallpaper). the TV is set as follows: resolution 1024 x 768 @ 60 Hz(NTSC), millions of colors. the TV is also set @ fullscreen from it's menu. the MacBook is set @ max native resolution 1280 x 800, millions of colors.
i got 2 cables from CompUSA($15.00/ea.) less than 1/2 the original list price. probably because there are no more 12" P'Books & they think they have no market for them & want to get 'em out of inventory. iTV Link cable might also work for MacBook presentations using a Projector.
    hope this helps someone.

  • Monster DVI Cable to wide to use on Mac Pro

Since the DVI connectors are closer in the Mac Pro than the Power Mac Dual G4, what brand extender cables will fit side by side?
Are there pigtail extenders available anywhere?
Should I just grind off the excess housing?
I upgraded from my Dual G4 to the 2006 model Power Mac. When I went to hook up the Monster Cable DVI400-4M DVI-D Video Cables they will not fit side by side, the housing extruded too much beyond the screw in pin.
    Thanks for your input.

    Hi-
There should have been a DVI to DVI adapter that shipped with the Mac Pro.
One end is smaller, specifically for this type of situation.
If you don't have one, it's this one:

  • Optical Audio Cable Troubles

I recently purchased the the Panasonic G20 50" HDTV and the Panasonic blu-ray/reciever combo with surrond sound. I have the TV connected to the blu-ray player via the HDMI AV, I was told that I needed an optical audio cable to get surround sound from cable (Charter).  When i try to connect the optical cable, I can't get a connection as in the cable can literally fall out and there is not a "snap" when I try to insert the cable. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?
oh by the way its not the $10 cable, they are monster cables.

    My two thoughts are:
    1)  You're inserting the cable in the wrong orientation and it's not going all the way in
    2)  The optical connector on the device in question is damaged/defective/loose.  Which device is the cable falling out of?  The surround receiver, the cable box, or both?
Personally, I'd recommend not wasting your money on Monster ever again by the way.  I've seen $4 TOSLINK cables that do just as well as the Monsters.

  • What Cable Do I Need?

    Hey Everyone,
I just bought a Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter so that I could hook up my laptop to a TV (mainly to play iTunes music and muted DVDs at the same time for a party I'm having, this way I won't have to buy a speaker system for just one night of use).
I thought I had the cable to connect from the adapter to my TV, but apparently I was wrong. I've looked online for the cord I need, but there are just so many options and different types. Which one do I need? And does the Apple Store sell the cable I need?
    Thanks for helping me out!

You mean kind of like Dark Side of the Rainbow?
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DarkSide_of_theRainbow
Radio Shack should have the audio cables you need to go from the MacBook headphone jack to the AUX audio input on your equipment, from basic inexpensive cables to high-end audiophile gold-plated Monster cables for more $$$. Check what inputs you have available on the TV/VCR/Stereo system, the left-right RCA jacks are pretty common. You could also find there either an S-video or RCA/composite video cable for the video signal from the adapter you just bought to go to the AUX video in on your equipment.

  • How to output sound to RCA cables?

I give up! I can't for the life of me figure out how to output the sound from my Macbook to play on my stereo or TV which use RCA cable hook-ups.
I got the VID ADPT MINI-DVI TO VIDEO ADAPTER-GEN but that only adapts the video, not the sound. Do I have to get some kind of optical to analog adapter?

This would do the trick, although you can probably find something at Radio Shack for less.

I got an iPod kit with a power supply, extra dock, and a Monster Cable (yeah I think they're overhyped) mini jack to RCA connector.
There are a bunch of ways you can do this. If you've already got long enough RCA cables, these would do the trick:

Or if you have a short distance, maybe something like this (doesn't say how long it is):

There are more attractive versions of this type of adapter. Radio Shack shows at least a dozen from different companies.

  • S-Video Adapter Cables?

I've been trying to find a video out adapter for my 5G iPod Video. I don't want a dock because I need it to be portable. I don't care if it plugs into the headphone jack like a composite A/V cable or if it uses the dock connection.
Anyone know of such a creation? Thanks.

I read something during my internet searches for iPod video cables that some need to be plugged into the Apple Dock for video to work. Can this Monster cable be plugged directly into the iPod (no dock) and still work? Thanks

  • What kind of cable connects video iPod to tv?

I can't find specific info on this other than the AV Monster cables on the apple site. I don't have the cable to connect my iPod to a tv yet and am wondering where to find it and what kind to get? I assume it plugs into the headphone jack output, but does it split to red & white stereo and a video RCA jack?
    THANKS!!!

    Nope.
The apple a/v cable from iPod to TV works great. Just like plugging a VCR or DVD player in.
For somewhat better video you would use the universal dock and plug the Apple a/v cable into the dock and you have the option of using it or an S-video cable from dock to TV in which case you would NOT plug the yellow video RCA connector into your TV as only one video source can be used at a time.
The S-video cable "should" give somewhat better video but of course it depends on the source video too. Only experimenting will tell for sure which combination is better than another.
In summary, the Apple a/v cable direct from iPod to TV is all you need. Other cables may work but I elected to use the real thing so that there would be no excuses in case it didn't work. I'm extremely happy with the setup. Bought a TV episode from iTunes the other day and showed it on 50" TV using just the a/v cable and the results were excellent. Not HD, but excellent.
