Alternative to Outlook to back up contacts on PC and use calendar

New owner of iphone 3gs 16gb but have just discovered iphone does not support Outlook 2000.
I have a recent laptop but my microsoft office is 2000 professional and this currently suits my needs. I am not in a financial position to upgrade Outlook.
Is there a free alternative? I just cant toback up all my contacts on the pc and if poss have use of a calendar function so that I can do away with the paper filofax!!!!
Thanks

Outlook 2000 will probably never sync with the iPhone, But there is a solution to at least IMPORT contact data from it into the iPhone. Here are the steps for this fairly easy 2-minute process:
1) Open Outlook 2000 and select File : Import/Export
2) Choose "Export to a File"
3) Choose "Comma Separated Values (Windows)"
4) Select your Contacts folder
5) Select your desktop or other place to save the temporary export file. Remember this name/location for step 10.
6) Click "Finish"
7) Now you need to open Windows Address Book. It is found in Start : All Programs: Accessories : Address Book
8) If it asks you if you want it to be your default vCard viewer, click "No"
9) Now we will import your contacts from the file you created using Outlook. Choose File : Import : Other Address Book : Text File (Comma Separated Values)
10) Choose the file you saved (in Step 5 you picked the name/location)
11) "Files of Type" will default to CSV; leave it at that and click "Open"
12) Click "Next" and accept the default field mappings
13) Click Finish
14) Now dock your iPhone and select the "Info" tab on your iPhone section of iTunes
15) Click "Sync contacts from:"and choose "Windows Address Book" instead of Outlook
16) Click "Sync" at the lower right of the iTunes screen. Voila!
However BE WARNED!
This fix can be problematic and can lead to your contacts being deleted from your iPhone. Read on!
We associated our iPhone/iTunes account with the Windows Address Book when we did the import. This worked fine for me. Then, somehow, WAB decided to associate itself with Outlook. Then, because this didn't work, iTunes kept overwriting the iPhones contacts with WAB contacts--which were a grand total of ZERO.
You can tell you will have this problem if your file : import/export options in WAB are grayed out.
To fix it, do this:
1) In WAB, go to tools : options
2) In the Data Sharing options, select "Do not share..."
3) Restart WAB and make sure the import/export functions are available. (Not a bad time to make a backup, either!)
4) Sync up your iPhone..should work!

How can I transfer video taken with my iPhone to my iPad WITHOUT using a computer or iTunes? I'm going to Europe for a month and want to use my iPhone to take pics and video, then come back to the hotel room and use my iPad to edit/store each evening. I don't want to use my iPad to take the video...too large/bulky. And I WON'T have a computer with me...I purchased the iPad to take with me so I could use the RDC to my home computer and avoid taking my computer at all. Is this possible?

here is a cheaper solution than camera kit and a lot easier if you have WIFI available.
I use the PhotoSync APP (I think its a $1.99) will transfer videos and photos over WIFI to any other IOS device or even PC/MAC. Great app since I like doing video and photos on my IPHONE and transfer to IPAD2 without synching through computer or doing cloud based storage.
You can even send photos/videos from your MAC/PC to your IOS devices that way too. Makes it so much easier.

  • ICloud backup; can I back up contacts without email and calendar?

    Hi,
I have ported my iPhone from my old work to my new workplace. I've backed up all my contacts to iCloud. When work added my new email account, I lost all my contacts. When I restored them from the cloud, I lost my new work email. How do I restore my old contacts, and keep my new email and calendar?
    Thanks
    Pastel.

Hi Brendan. Thanks for your clue but unfortunately that did not solve the problem. Prior to posting my query I had already checked out the article you're referring me to (whose URL is http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3605). It may well be that I'm not being crystal clear owing to my far from perfect English but the whole point is precisely that I'm not able to import contacts  which ALREADY appear on my iPad - being the outcome of syncing my remote MS Exchange account with the device - into iCloud. The procedure described in the quoted article simply doesn't work (for that matter, no such Setting sign pops up under ICloud contacts). In fact, it appears that the only contacts which I'm able to keep under iCloud are those which I directly create from scratch within iCloud Group itself. Since I'm likely to have my MS outlook account  ( which is mirrored into a MS Exchange one for remote usage) forcibly deleted in one month time or so, I started  worrying about how to keep my contacts alive/ intact after that deletion. Hope the issue got clearer now ... Cheers, Piero.

  • How to sync back my contacts from iPad and iMac to iPhone and MacBook

All my contacts on my macbook and my iPhone got erased but I still have them all of them on my iMac and iPad so I am wondering how to sync them all back to all my devices???
    Can someone help me?
    Best,
    Oscar

You should be able to copy/move the contacts from your iMac to your MacBook using the migration assistant. It is under Utilities in the Application folder. One they are on both our your computer, just syncing your iPhone and iPad to its respective computer will keep them in sync. I myself also sync my contacts with my Gmail contacts. Doing so will keep your two computer synchronized too.

  • Contact Sheets / Proofing and useful Aperture RAW Conversion

    All,
I wanted to appeal to all of you pro photographers out there to share about how you handle the proofing stage (contact sheets) with your clients. I'm curious about how you all make this process as efficient as possible.
Ok, say you have taken 1000 pictures for a wedding or some other event (forget the accuracy of that number, its just a round number for discussion sake). You need to present your photos to your client, but you need to present a subset of the 1000 photos for a few reasons:
    1) Not all photos you are going to take are going to be great. I've heard a general quote by some pro photographers that their "keeper ratios" (the percentage of pics that are really good from a shoot) run around 10%-20%. Fair enough, I don't want to debate this percentage, but it gives us a target number of 100 photos to present to a client from a 1000 picture shoot.
    2) Your client is probably not going to be happy if they have to sift through 1000 photos. I recently had a friend who paid several thousand dollars for a wedding photographer who sent them 1000 photos to choose from. They weren't particularly happy with this, and told the guy there was just too many to choose from. Personally, I felt that this was putting part of the photographer's responsibility on the client, but whatever.
Ok...so for the sake of the example here, we have to get 1000 photos down to 100 photos, so the client can choose what 50 (for example) they want to purchase and have printed, put in their photo book, slide presentation, etc.
Sorry for the long intro, but here is the issue at hand: we want to work quickly for the client, and get them their 100 photos as soon as possible. We also want to put our best foot forward, and give them high-quality photos. But at the same time, we want to work efficiently, and if possible not spend time doing final retouching on photos that the customer doesn't want, but rather focus this time directly on the photos the customer does want.
I have two questions from this which pertain to Aperture's RAW conversion and workflow:
    1) Do you do any significant adjustments on photos for the contact sheets you present to clients (the 100 photos now)? Is it just a quick exposure adjustment, or are you retouching all 100?
    2) Despite Aperture's RAW conversion problems and other adjustment glitches, is it sufficient quality in your opinion for a contact sheet?
My purpose in asking these questions is that perhaps the Aperture RAW conversion issue can be mitigated if we can get to the point of customer contact and review using Aperture-only conversion and adjustment tools, and then isolate photoshop use for only the final, significant edits. The problems with Aperture's RAW conversion are well-documented, but the question is, could it still be sufficient for small-scale proofs, understanding that for large-scale, high-res images, it won't be suffcient.
    Your opinons are valued!

">-DELETE project from Aperture because I can't use the app for the delivery
    of finals:
Forgive me if I've forgotten the detail you may have posted elsewhere about this. I have seen you mention this several times, but I am really interested in the specifics behind the problems you have encountered. I have some needs in finishing that are beyond just regurgitating a photo. I'll be basically augmenting my photo with text, borders, special effects, etc. for more professional presentation, and the ability to market a photo in different ways. This is one reason I cannot discard Photoshop from my workflow. Anyway, let's assume for a moment I'm able to do all my editing in Photoshop, and those PSD files are sitting within Aperture. From there, what problems am I going to encounter? I'm tapping your brain here, as the time I have spent in Aperture has been primarily oriented toward everything prior to the finishing stage. "
    Hi Brad,
If I've imported images into Aperture that have previously been worked over in Photoshop, none of the layers I may have created in those files will be available to me from within Aperture. This does not break but severely sprains the functionality of Photoshop. I'm keeping the images around because I think I or my clients will need them later, so what might I do with them?:
    1) If I'd like to do more work on them I either have to abandon access to the previously created layers and their magic, or export the file from Aperture, work on it outside, import it back into Aperture. Every time I want to work with those layers I have to do the same dance.
    2) If I'd like to send jpg or tif versions of those files anywhere I can choose to use the tools within Aperture or Photoshop to do so. Aperture's tools for these conversions are simply not of professional utility: no compressed tifs, no layered tif support, no quality choices for jpgs and no jpg previews. And in either case, using Aperture or Photoshop, the conversions are created OUTSIDE of Aperture and not managed by it.
    3) When I decide to archive my older projects I'm faced with the incredible limitation that Aperture will not allow me any remote search of any archive that is not "live" within Aperture. Not even Spotlight will search Aperture libraries!!!!!
So moving already created projects into Aperture has absolutely no advantages and a number of problems, any one of which might be a deal-killer by itself.
If I'd like to use Aperture to manage work that I create going forward I've got those limitations already listed above, but I CAN access layers in PSD that are created from within Aperture. I cannot make layered duplicates of those files in order to work on versions of those images so once again the Photoshop workflow is hobbled.
All of this makes it a bad idea for my projects to make anything but a brief trip in and out of Aperture for sorting/proofing.
    Regards,
    fp

  • Is it necessary to have my iPhone backed up on my iPad and use a portion of my ipad storage?

Is it necessary to backup my iPhone on my iPad (it is automatically set up to do this) and therefore use up a good portion of my storage?

The iPhone backup is not stored on your iPad. The iPad and iPhone backups are stored on iCloud which are what you are seeing in Settings/iCloud/Storage & BackUp. If your delete these  from any device you are deleting them from iCloud freeing up iCloud storage, not the iPad's storage.

  • Unable to back up contacts and messages..

    Hi every one,
I am using Nokia N80 for past 2 months.. Few days back i wanted to save my contact info and sms and other notes to my pc for updating my firmware.. When i tried the back up option from nokia pcsuite,it showed error in backing up contact info, messages and all.. It copied few files like user files from gallery.. But not copying crucial informations like contacts!
When i viewed the report,it simply said couldn't back up.. Try restarting the phone! I did that some 10 times and tried.. It still didnt work!
Please suggest me some steps and help me to save the info from mobile and update my firmware! Please do help me!

To have messages contacts and other stuff synch you need to have the phone install the Synch application from PC Suite.
Use the Get Connected button to connect to the Phone. This is different that just connecting it without the getting connected button. When you use the Get connected it will check to see if you have messaging support installed in your phone, follow the instructions on screen and accept the installation on the phone.
Now use the back-up feature in PC Suite.
640K Should be enough for everybody

Outlook 2003, 2007, or 2010 along with syncing calendar events and notes, or with the address book app used by Windows Mail called Windows Contacts for syncing contacts only.
Before syncing contacts with an empty Windows Contacts address book, enter one contact in Windows Contacts. This will provide a merge prompt with the first sync for this data which you want to select. Syncing direct with Windows Contacts via the iTunes sync process is selected under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes.

My wife bought an iPad Air and synced contact from our PC (Outlook), now all our contacts in Outlook have gone and we have to go to iCloud to get them, and even then they are a bit jumbled. How do I get my data back onto my PC?

If you can see the iCloud contacts in Outlook, you can copy them back to your PC by selecting all the contacts (click one, then press Control-A), then drag and drop the selected contacts to Contacts under My Contacts on the left sidebar of Outlook.
If you want to copy your calendar back to Outlook, select your iCloud calendar on the left sidebar of Outlook, switch to the list view (select View from the ribbon, then click Change View>List), select your events (click on a single event, then press Control-A), then control drag and drop them to Calendar under My Calendars on the left sidebar.
Then you can sign out of iCloud on the iCloud control panel and your local copies will still be there.  If you want to add your iCloud email account back to iCloud, you can do this with these settings: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4864.

  • Back up Contacts WITHOUT OUTLOOK

I use Outlook at work and use the calendar as my all-the-time calendar, but don't want all my personal contacts synced with that. At home I use Mozilla Thunderbird for some e-mail accounts and Gmail for others.  I don't want to have to figure out where my contacts are.  What other options are there for back-up of contacts?
ALSO:  When I click on the Sync 'CONFIGURE' in Link, I get a garbled overlay of two messages, and couldn't sync with either of the above, even if I wanted to.  (I tried to post the screen shot, but it won't let me).  One message appears to say 'Blackberry Link has not detected any data sources to link with such as MS Outlook.'  The other is 'Your calendar and contacts that are manually synced will not be transferred during a backup, restore, or device switch.'
    Any advice?

I tried editing contacts with Thunderbird and also with Gmail.  It mostly worked but there were scrambled items because each email client has it's own tempate or data structure.  Duplicates occur on import to the BB10 device.  BBM fields may be lost.
I would like to do complete management of contacts and calendars within Link without dependency on software that is not from Blackberry.

  • 6300 Cannot back-up contacts!

I have tried to back-up my entire Contacts folder via PC Suite onto my computer - but its only copying 17 of my Contacts. What do I do to back up the complete list of contacts so that I can print it off please?

I am not entirely sure how you have used PC Suite so far to move your contacts to PC, have you syncronised with Outlook or Address Book (did you use "Synchronise" alternative in PC Suite) or did you use the "contacts" alternative in PC SUite.
I now make the assumption that you used the "contacts" and I would instead suggest you synchronise the contacts to Windows Address Book or Outlook (you should have at least one of the 2 in your PC) and after you have synchrnosed the contacts to the application (Address Book or Outlook) in PC side, you can use the application to print the contacts.
For me, backing up contacts and printing them to paper are different things. I normally run the backup regualrly from my phone to the PC using PC Suite (it is the backup icon), but that creates a file in PC for safekeeping and I do not print that.

  • How do I load my hubby's backed up contacts from itune to my phone with his new sim - itunes is registering my serial number and wants to load my contacts

We are fairly new iPhone users and my hubby lost (misplace he says) his iPhone but we had an another phone (not iPhone) and want to load his contacts onto a new SIM  that he can use on that phone. We have changed his phone number to the new sim.   I thought if I put his SIM in my iphone I could go in & add his backed up contacts onto his Sim but can't see how I can direct iTunes to do this as it must be looking at the phone serial number instead of the phone number which I was hoping it would do.  I wants to back up & sync my contacts/info to his new SIM?  Is anyone able to tell me how I can get his contacts onto his SIM without a new iPhone?
    Thanks for your help.
    Jacki

No contact information is stored in iTunes. Contact information is synced through iTunes to a supported contact application on your computer: Outlook, Windows Address Book, OS X Address Book. Unless you own a sim card reader/writer, you're gonna have to manually enter these contacts directly on the phone.
