Alternative to QT Pro

Basic issue is that when working in something like FCE with AIC 1440 an export to the tv preset gets all messed up and displays at the wrong AR. Simple answer is to open it in QT Pro and adjust the display settings before saving it.
Problem is not everyone has QT Pro and doesn't think they should have to pay $$$ to correct this issue. Is there another application that can do this without re-encoding and with the simplicity of the QT Pro solution.

The usual way to get around QT-Pro limitations is to write an AppleScript application that will do what you want it to do. Sometimes (not always...), AppleScript can make the necessary changes even if the Pro version of QT is not installed. For examples, see the library of sample scripts that is provided in the QT developer section.
No guarantee, and I can't test it for you because I have QT Pro on all of my machines. But it's worth a try, anyway.

  • Alternative to Adobe Pro for generating light-weight PDFs for Mac?

Is anyone aware of a lower cost alternative to Adobe Acrobat Pro for generating light weight PDFs?

Almost anything will export to PDF. Pages, for instance. $20.
You'd be hard pressed to find anything that won't.

  • Alternatives to Macbook Pro?

    Hi all,
First of all, I am a huge fan of Apple products and own a Macbook pro purchased in 2007. I've never even imagined using a computer that is not made by Apple despite the fact that I use Windows quite a lot because of all the architecture softwares (D*mn it, you Autodesk!) . Here I am, looking for an alternative laptop to a Macbook pro. My belief has been that there's no alternative to the Macbook pro, so I didn't know where to start. After surfing around dell, sony, etc, I thought it would be fool of me not to ask you guys who may know well both Mac and other laptops.
My beloved macbook pro's battery said goodbye to me, but I didn't want to buy an one-hundred-dollar new battery because I've been thinking I need a more powerful laptop anyway. The new unibody Macbook pro 17" looked really good, but I found out that it has a built-in battery, and that Apple doesn't even sell a battery separately. I'll have to bring the laptop to the apple store and let them change the battery. (Mr.jobs, I can do the job. Please let me do it myself, saving some dollars. By the time the battery's depleted, the warranty is expired anyway!) Also, Apple is so closed that I can't trust any third party products for Apple.
After buying a $3000 laptop, the customer has to pay $200 every two-so year without any legitimate option? What is this, am I a drug addict, and they are the only drug dealer in the town? I feel like they think that their customers are all moronic zealots. (yeah, I was actually.)
Please let me hear what you guys think. Any word will be appreciated. You can give me some other options to purchase, or you can call me an idiot who doesn't know anything about the laptop and tell me to stick to the macbook pro--please don't forget to give me a reason to stick around the apple store besides calling me an idiot, though.

I understand not really trusting Apple's hard numbers, but what you can trust is that the new batteries will last longer than the previous ones. Perhaps it may not be 3x as long, depending on how you use the battery, but it should be +at least+ 2x as long.
I hear people complaining that the new battery does never last more than about 4 hours under normal circumstances.
Well, it does depend what normal circumstances are defined as. With my MBP (old, user-replaceable battery rated for 5 hours and 300 charge cycles) I can still get 4.5 hours after 1 year of use, with WiFi off and the screen brightness at the lowest setting. That's fine for me if I'm taking notes in class. For others, if they use more intensive apps, the number could be lower. Still, I can't imagine getting worse battery life than any PC when carrying out the same tasks.
    I'd checked the built-in battery for 17" costs $180.
My mistake entirely. I did read that you were interested in the 17" but had the 15" in mind when I typed my reply! Sorry about that, you're right!
Obviously you'd want to do research into the third-party solutions but unless you find a large number of people complaining about them I would see no reason not to trust them, especially if the price differential is large. If you're saving $20 though, I'd go with the Apple battery.
However, I really come to hate the way Apple treats the customer
I've had the exact opposite experience. All my Apple gear works perfectly and when I did have issues in the past they've been very quick to take care of me and have the malfunctioning product repaired or replaced. You may be able to find a PC manufacturer that is better at this than Apple, or you may not. I personally doubt you will, but I don't have much experience with PCs, admittedly.

  • Digi Design 003 or Mackie Universal Pro

Dumping my Roland VS2480 for Logic Pro and I need an audio interface & controller. I am looking for one complete package but so far I have not identified one. The new Mackie Universal Pro has 1 USB & 3 midi inerfaces but does not appear to have any audio interfaces, USB is not the way to go from what I have read. The Digi Design 003 has all the connections I need - yet all it mentions is Pro Tools vs being a viable alternative for Logic Pro as a controller. If I could mash the 2 together I would. Any suggestions? I have about $2,500 to spend. I have a MAC Pro Quad, 4 GB Memory , 3.0ghz and 1.5 TB storage.

    Hi
I used to have a Digi 002 with control surface and now have an M-Box Pro and a Mackie HUI for the purposes of this discussion.
The Mackie works fantastically with Logic as it was codesigned by the Logic and Mackie guys. It works better than the 002 control surface worked with Pro Tools.
The Mackie also has HUI mode which allows it to control pro tools (still in a better way than the 002 did). You can get a "pro tools overlay" ($20 or something) that shows which buttons do what in the HUI/Pro Tools mode. The modes are switchable.
The USB cautions you have seen relate to audio and not midi, midi over USB is no problem. I've got the older Mackie which is midi only which is also fine and you can pick them up around $700. It does need a free midi in out though.
The 003 (whilst pitched as a minor augmentation of the 002) does allow for a midi mode which allows the 003 control surface to control 3rd party software, but the software has to be mapped to the controller which is potentially quite a drag. So there's no "driver/personality" for Logic or Reason etc....
I would say (and am currently thinking about) having the 003 non-control surface (rack) version and the Mackie as the best of all worlds. The MCU Pro (±$1200 midi & USB ) and the 003 rack $1299 would be one way. Or you could get the rack factory which has a cool plugin bundle for $1695 and the midi only Mackie MCU at around $700.

  • Is there a way to create a slideshow viewable with a DVD player?

Hi there, is there amongst the Apple programs (or else) something that would allow me to show my digital photos on TV with a DVD player? Manually commanded with the remote, or with auto time lapse, fading or transitions?

I tested both Photo Magico and iDVD. Both produce a nice slideshow with good image quality when previewed on the computer. PhotoMagico has some really professional grade blending and zooming effects, and allows placement of multiple sound tracks, which is not possible with iDVD where you just drop one file and it plays in buckle.
The problem with both is that when the slide show is encoded, it looses too much quality! Images loose their detail, their colour depth, and they flicker inacceptably. The worst is with PhotoMagico who sends the already compressed file to iDVD to be compressed again and burnt. The loss of quality from the very neat preview to the resulting DVD is enormous. Sent to Toast Titanium, it's a little better but aliasing effects are still very annoying.
I then tried a slideshow made directly in iDVD. The quality is merely acceptable, still not professional. The images are so compressed that they loose their details, and the edges of the frames and every straight line in the images flicker...
Compressing an original 5 Gb slideshow made of JPEG files to 1,5 Gb seems an enormous rate of compression. Is this the way it is with those programs, or have I missed some settings somewhere? Is there no way to preserve the initial image size when passed to DVD? Alternatively, would the pro version DVD Studio Pro have more flexibillity? It's there on my computer, but the interface is turning me away! ...
    Thanks again for any hints!

  • Migrating a Single 250GB Drive to 2TB RAID 5 Array

My Mac Pro has the original 250GB hard drive it came with. I just purchased a Mac Pro RAID Card. My intention is to install 2 1TB drives, and create a RAID 5 with the three drives. Obviously the new set will only use 250GB on each of the 2 new 1TB drives. Once the array is fully built out, I plan on removing the 250GB drive, and have the array rebuild on the 3rd 1TB drive. This should leave me at the same place i was with the 250GB drive installed.
What I am wondering is that will the RAID utility now see extra space on all three drives, and subsequently allow me to create an additional RAID 5 set with the available space? I'm doing this in lieu of cloning the 250GB to a 1TB drive, boot from the 1TB drive, and then migrating a single boot volume to a RAID set.
    Any ideas is appreciated. Thanks.

  • Adding annotations throws off Table of Contents links

I asked this a month ago and got no responses...Help is critically needed. When annotations are added, the bookmarks seem OK on authoring machine, but once PDF is opened on another machine, everything thrown off!
I'm involved in a paperless pilot project and am having a difficult time circumventing an issue in Preview.
I'm re-formatting material for executive meetings from WordPerfect, Word, Excel and PowerPoint into bookmarked PDF format in Adobe Acrobat Pro X. When they are opened in Preview by senior management on MacBook Airs, the Table of Contents links everywhere correctly. However, the moment they add an annotation (in this case, notes), the table of contents is thrown one page off, regardless of their place in the document. Even after removing the note, the table of contents does not revert to the proper place. I'm assuming this occurs because the annotation throws off the markers from the imported bookmarks.
Using Acrobat Reader on the Airs isn't an option since annotations aren't possible. We are also really trying to keep production of the PDFs limited to Acrobat Pro to ensure cross-platform compatibility of the Table of Contents.
Has anyone else encountered these issues? Is there a potential workaround?

A lightweight alternative to Acrobat Pro for creating table of contents for any PDF is PDFOutliner (only $5 on Mac App Store.) The TOC links generated by PDFOutliner don't have the problem you've described above. You could open your PDF in PDFOutliner and re-save it (the TOC will be rebuilt) for a quick test.
Note: I'm the developer of PDFOutliner.

  • How do I specify folder and file options for memory cards in LR4?

    Hello!
I have read the sections Set import and file-handling preferences and Specify Auto Import settings in the manual. But they don't seem to answer my question. The other stuff that's written about importing files in Lightroom seem to only cover the import of photos to the Lightroom catalog, which is not my primary concern, although I do want them imported to the catalog as well. But before the photos can go to the Lightroom catalog they need to be improted, in other words copied over from the memory card to the local disk drive. Simply put, all I want is for Lightroom to take over the responsibility from Canon EOS Utility and behave the same way when importing/copying files to the local disk drive. How do I set up Lightroom to do just that?
I just want this type of folder and file structure:
    J:\2010_08_02\IMG_0037.JPG
    J:\2010_08_02\IMG_0039.JPG
    J:\2010_08_22\IMG_0372.CR2
    J:\2010_08_22\IMG_0372.JPG
    J:\2010_11_29\IMG_1405.CR2
    J:\2010_11_29\IMG_1405.JPG
    J:\2011_06_17\IMG_2887.CR2
    J:\2011_06_17\IMG_2887.JPG
    ... etc!
    1. First things first, where the heck do I specify the destination folder for new photos?
There is an option titled Show import dialog when a memory card is detected under the General tab in Preferences, but there is no folder destination option associated with this.
    2. How do I tell Lightroom to leave original file names as they are (i.e. IMG_2887.CR2) and place them in a new sub-folder (i.e. 2011_06_17) of the destination folder (J:\) named after the capture date of the photo (July 17, 2011)?
There are a few options under the File Handling tab in the Preferences, but they don't seem to concern the importation of files to the local disk drive.
    3. This maybe should have been the first question really; is Lightroom capable of importing files from the camera or a card reader to the local disk drive at all?
I sure would expect it to be able to do that, but from the looks of it I am not too confident about that.
For starters I would like it to just copy my photo files, either directly from camera or from a card reader to a destination folder of my choice, in the same fashion that Canon EOS Utility does it. I don't wat to just import the files to the Lightroom catalog and start working with the files directly from camera or memory card. Hell no! It's not an external disk drive for God's sake!
    Please advise!

I'm not sure how it is now, but there used to be a dedicated "photo downloader" in Adobe Photoshop Elements at least up to version 6. Is this still part of Photoshop Elements? Or is it just available in Adobe Bridge? I don't remember though if it only imported files to the local disk drive or if it also added them to the library/catalog.
I've tested Downloader Pro and Lightroom 4 now for importing the photos to local disk drive. I also tested one application called Cam2PC Image Downloader.
The latter is actually called Cam2PC Image Browser and as its name suggests it's a software for browsing and doing basic changes to the photos, an image organizer. But it has a dedicated downlaoder called Cam2PC Image Downloader that can be very useful for importing photos. It comes either as a payed version or a freeware version.
I also tested one called Smart Photo Import. This one could be a good alternative to Downloader Pro, but I think it still needs many improvements, and it lacks a lot of the functionality of Downloader Pro. But to be fair, this does cost half as much as Downloader Pro (13 EUR or 17 USD compared to 30 USD).
I am most impressed by Downloader Pro. It has everything I could ask for really. But I was most impressed by its speed. I've done a simple speed test to see which one is faster and here are the results.
    Downloader Pro
    324 files (162 JPG & 162 CR2)
    Max speed: 21,25 MB/s
    Time: 02:58.6
    Lightroom 4
    Set to render "Standard" previews
    324 files (162 JPG & 162 CR2)
    Max speed: N/A
    Time: 03:41.7
Compared to Downloader Pro: 78% done at 02:58.6
    Rendering time: 04:35.5
    Total: 08:16.12
    Cam2PC Image Downloader
    324 files (162 JPG & 162 CR2)
    Max speed: N/A
    Time: 03:30.6
The max speed is the maximum transfer speed that ever occured during the transfer, and this is not something that the application is showing on it's own, it's the highest speed that I have seen with my own eyes. Unfortunately the other applications had no way of showing the speed, only Downloader Pro could show the speed. That's why it says N/A (as in not available).
As you can see Downloader Pro did the same job in shortest amount of time. Note that I could be transfering 2 or 3 cards worth of photos for the time it takes Lightroom to transfer just one.
The memory card was full when I started the test. It was a 4 GB Sandisk Ultra 30 MB/s card. The card reader was a Lexar USB 3.0 Professional. Although it was connected to a USB 2.0 port on Intel chipset motherboard (Intel X38, ICH9R). The destination folder was set to Desktop\(name of the application) on a Seagate 500 GB SATA (ST3500320AS) disk. All done on a Windows Vista PC with SP2.
One way to make Lightroom do this job more quickly is to choose "minimum" as previews rendering option. This way it doesn't spend as much time rendering the photos after being copied to the disk drive. Now, I have not tested this but I believe that Lightroom can start a second import of a second memory card whilst the first one is being copied. I'm not sure how it would affect the speed though, and you would need two card readers for this.
I wish I could skip rendering previews alltogether. I like to leave adding photos to the catalog and rendering previews for the last step. This is because it takes so long time and I like to use 1:1 previews, so I like leaving Lightroom to do this job in the morning or over the night.
I have learned to use prests now in the import dialog of Lightroom. So now it should not be a problem if I always want to copy new photos to the same location. If this location is changed I can recall it simply by choosing my preset. This is very handy.
All in all, Lightroom is very good at importing photos from camera or from a memory card reader to the local disk drive. But it's now my preferred way of importing photos to the computer. Which is why I have decided to purchase Downloader Pro. Thanks all for your help. I appreciate it!

  • Transformation: Need for calling a custom function module on source system

    Hi Gurus,
I need to use a custom FM residing on source system within the transformation to determine the type (e.g. posting type) of a document item. The logic is quite complex with many exceptions (many if statements) and 2 customizing & few transparent tables are in use as well in the FM.
From my point of view, there are few options for achieving the outcome:
    1. Copy the FM logic 1:1 in transformation
    2. Transport the FM from ERP to BW system
    3. Source system delivers the info (e.g. with an extra field "posting_type")
    4. Access the FM directly via RFC/BAPI
However, there are pros and cons for each of the alternatives:
    *Option 1*
    pros:
cons: consistency problem, need for importing customizing tables & source tables, high maintenance effort
    *Option 2*
pros: better consistency compared to Option 1
cons: need for importing tables, administrative efforts
    *Option 3*
pros: no logic is needed at BW side, no transformations means no impact on performance, high consistency, no administrative effort
cons: structure in source system has to be changed, impact on historical records
    *Option 4*
pros: best consistency (better than Option 3 as FM might change), no administrative effort
cons: impact on performance during transformation
Could you please verify my assumptions and give suggestions on solving the problem?
    Thanks a lot!
    Regards,
    Meng

    Hi Joon,
    According to me.
If Historical data amount is so high, historical data is available in BW(at PSA level or acquisition layer or corporate memory layer) and headache to load history data(because of overload on ECC due to huge amount of data) from ECC then I will suggest combination of 3 and 4 steps.
If fetching history data from ECC is not headache for you then go for step 3.
Step 3 is most common approach in BW, which is easy for implementation and support.
    Regards,
    Ashish

  • Looking for Accessible PDF creator

(I'm posting this on behalf of my employer. I looked through terms of service and this sort of posting doesn't appear to be discouraged. If it is, let me know and I'll remove. Thanks!)
Pacific Educational Press is seeking people with advanced knowledge of Acrobat Pro 9 to help us create an Accessible PDF of a Math textbook.
Using Acrobat Pro 9, the qualified candidate will need to convert an ordinary PDF file of a math textbook  and convert it into an accessible PDF file that can be used by the visually impaired (using PDF-friendly speech software).
The PDF document has numerous design aspects to it and the person would need to be able to map out the correct reading flow for the speech function of the Accessible PDF.
The document would need to include cross-references and tags for alternate text (to describe the content of photographs, formulas and diagrams).
The person would need to have an understanding of high-school math.
The person would need to begin working immediately and complete the project by April 9.
If you are interested, please send a resume highlighting relevant experience. You will be asked to create a sample PDF to show that you have experience using Acrobat 9 Pro.
    No phone calls please.

    A Math book eh?
    Equations/Formulas - fun.
Regardless, you will want the right "tools" (hardware as well as software).
Specifically, work machines with stand alone graphics card (at least 250MB - more *is* better).
If you are authoring in Word, consider Netcentric's "PAWS".
Might be worth some upfront trials of Word out to tagged PDF via the Office 2007 Save As to PDF.
It has improved since its first release.
Alternatively, augment Acrobat Pro 9 with Netcentric's CommonLook.
The authoring application used will have a significant impact.
Authoring in a page layout application?
There are several good ones but, InDesign looks to have the best tag management.
Tag management and the ability to "stage" for accessibility in the authoring file is significant advantage.
But, for any large, living, technical - Nothing better than FrameMaker.
On the whole, rather pleasing tag management.
Also, does tables like nothing else..
Add to this the "Book" feature of FrameMaker & things get better.
Actually, your job is just what Adobe's Technical Communication Suite is all about (but that's getting OT).
Do not rely upon Acrobat's Read Outload.
Rather, QC PDFs via JAWS, Windows Eyes, NVDA.
n.b., CommonLook gets good reviews on its ability to QC the PDF.
You might want to consider a post to Adobe's Acrobat User Community "Job Board"
as it may broaden exposure to your request.
    http://www.acrobatusers.com/forums/aucbb/viewforum.php?id=37
    The "tos" is at:
    http://www.acrobatusers.com/forums/aucbb/viewtopic.php?id=19437
    Good Luck with your endeavor.
(just a end-thought - May want someone to spot check as the project goes along.
Karen MCCall of Karlen Communications (out of Canada) may be one of the individuals that could help with such. Certainly there are others - she comes to mind as she has the knowledge/experience and is out of Canada.)
    Be well...

  • Transferring file pc laptop - ibook via wireless

    Hi,
I need to transfer files from my ibook to a win laptop.
1)I used a flash drive but got damaged files.
    2)Os 9 can't see my ipod nano!
I've got an airport 802.11b on my ibook and an intel 802.11b/g on the asus win laptop. Can I transfer files through wireless? How?I'm a newbie of os 9
    tnks a lot

A1: Unfortunately, I am not familiar with the card in question (someone else may be able to provide you with exact information). Generally speaking however, special Mac driver software is needed for Ethernet cards.
A2: There are some limitations regarding Mac OS 10.4 and certain older systems. Without going into details, you may not be able to use all machines as servers, but it is usually possible to create a connection that will allow files to be transferred.
A3: Yes, a direct connection, typically (depending upon the machines involved), requires a crossover cable. A connection via a hub or a switch (router) will use normal cables.
For additional information, have a look here and here.
There are a couple of alternative solutions. Pro primo, you could try a wireless connection to your existing network. This web page could perhaps be of interest. Secondly, a CompactFlash card (or another flash card) used with an inexpensive PC Card adapter (see, for example, here) would let you carry out the transfers.

  • Various network setups for media serving and backups

Are there any good sites, blog posts, etc that show different home network configurations with a Time Capsule, external HDs and Macs for handling backups and media serving? Right now I have a simple Setup where my TC backs up my MBP. I also have a couple externals HDs w a lot of music and video that's not in my iTunes library on the MBP, the HD of which is at capacity. I know I want to be able to easily access all of that content on my MBP, AppleTV, iPhone, iPad. I also want to have a good backup solution (possibly even a backup of the backup for redundancy). I just don't know the simplest way to do it and haven't found a good resource to see the alternatives and/or pros/cons of different configurations. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  • PC5400 Memory

I wanted to add a gig of ram to my macbook pro. I was going to buy the
    OCZ 1024MB PC5400D DR2 667MHz SODIMM Memory
Will this be compatible with the macbook pro considering the mac runs PC5300 ram?
    Thanks

First of all, I want to say that if the price is okay for you, buy the apple ram! It retains one point of support for the machine and really simplifies it. Any problems you have and you can work with a retail store, which can save you shipping and stress of returning ram. (I can handle a little risk if the savings is huge, so I tried cheaper routes first)
The OCZ (2 x (85245) OCZ OCZ26671024VSO 1GB DDR2-667 PC2-5400 SODIMM Memory Retail) did not work in my core duo machine. I read the reviews about macbooks using it on newegg.com and it sounded like it would work, but my mbp downclocked the ram to 533 with two chips in and it is supposed to be 667mhz. I cannot say whether it would not work in a core 2 duo machine or other apple hardware. But for a core duo macbook pro, I wouldn't try it.
You would never know the OCZ would end up being 533 if you only bought one chip, but even if you paired a 1gb pc5400 ocz valueram with 512 apple ram, it would still downclock it to 533mhz. Did I notice, not really. Did I still see it in the system profiler, yes.
Also, the OCZ ram pased ALL hardware tests and did report as the correct ram model in the hardware test (OCZ26671024VSO).
I had sent the OCZ ram back this week and ordered a 2x1GB kit from crucial based on my computer model. It works perfectly and shows 2GB at 667mhz now, (yeaaaaa!). (model? CT541093, Part Number: CT2KIT12864AC667). It was $203.99 before tax/ship. I always default to crucial if I get bad memory, and they have always worked.
To sum it up: Apple ram is the best bet, one particular 2x1gb pair I tried didn't work and one did, (crucial memory is a great alternative).
