Alternative to Safari 5

The obvious point here is that Safari 5 isn't working. I'm one of those boring people who dutifully install the recommended Apple software updates, and I haven't installed any outside plug-ins or anything else. I have liked Apple over the years because I haven't had to be concerned with technical details (as I do with Microsoft at my office). I'm sure Apple is dealing with this problem, although I haven't seen any public announcements. But in the meantime, I installed Mozilla's Firefox, and it is working perfectly. I haven't given up on Safari yet, but for the time being, Firefox works.

Hi!
A bit of an update. I have two computers both 2 weeks old now. My iMac was a replacement provided by Apple after 3 video card and or logic board failures on my previous iMac. My laptop unfortunately was a replacement for a 3 day old laptop that kept on overheating (thermal shutdown saved me!). I have had Mac's for 25 years these were my only problems. Apple had no hesitation in replacing both machines - that is what I call service!
Anyway. I have been trying a few things on my iMac whilst leaving the MacBook untouched so I have a baseline against which I can check Safari. Clearing caches and checking plugins (I had none) no help. However I did a verify permissions and repair permissions - no change in speed etc. compared to laptop on same webpage. Did it a second time just in case I had goofed it up and there is a very noticeable improvement. Maybe first time round I hit the "verify" twice and did not do a "repair". I guess most of you have already done this but thought I would feed it back anyway.

  • Any alternatives to Safari?

I've had my Mac for a year and love it. I've used safari to access the internet and never encountered any problems outside the occasional freeze up. However, after installing the new safari upgrades, pages load slower, freeze up more, don't display images or videos it previously displayed,etc...
Is there a better application I can be using? If not, how do I improve safari's performance?
    Thanks

FireFox is a very good browser. I use it and Safari. For most of my surfing I use Safari 3.0.4 and have no problems. I use FireFox for the sites that are not Safari friendly. It has some nice features and works well with a lot of sites. Check out the link I gave and you can download it for free. A lot of people prefer it because it allows more customization with themes and plug-ins. It is a very versatile browser.

  • Safari startup page not loading at launch

Since Mac OS Lion upgrade, Safari now reopens pages displayed when closed even if the option is not selected. For instance, I tried to select "Home Page" and "Top Sites" option and it still reopens the same pages as when I closed it previously. Am I the only one to have this issue ? To be precise, I have two Macbooks with different history and parameters, and they have both the same problem as described here since their upgrade to Mac OS Lion.
Many thanks in advance for your help.

What you are describing is how Lion works by default.
You can disable it globally by going into System Preferences > General > and unchecking the box that labelled Restore windows when quitting and reopening apps.
Alternatively, quit Safari using ⌘⌥Q instead.

  • Safari 4.0.3 Command R not working

Since updating to Safari 4.0.3 am unable to reload a page using the Command R Combo from the keyboard. The arrow at the end of the url window still works as does the reload button under the View Menu but nothing happens using Command R from Kboard. have tried Trashing Plist and Prefs and resetting all with no joy.
    Any thoughts muchly appreciated.

Unfortunately not. It's a future feature. Click To Flash is a good Flash blocker. You can establish a whitelist of Flash pages you want to automatically open while blocking all the rest. Most stable version is 1.4.2. There's a beta version too, however, I have found it buggy. Once installed you'll find Click To Flash settings in the Safari Menu.
When you open a page, any Flash content will show an empty box with the word Flash inside. Right click on the Flash to add to the whitelist. If it's a one-shot thing, just click on the word Flash.
The alternative is Safari AdBlock. That's been very buggy. I do not recommend its use.

  • Safari MUCH slower than Explorer on same computer. Why?

I have Comcast cable internet and I've noticed that my Safari (1.3.2) has been getting increasingly slow, very slow over the past several weeks. So I've been using Explorer (5.2.3) which is blazing fast comparatively. Why is this and is there anything I can do to Safari to get the same performance I'm getting from IE?
Safari has all my bookmarks. I've done the import bookmarks thing into IE but it just creates a "Bookmarks.plist" which, as far as I can tell, does nothing. Also my email application automatically launches Safari for links in email and I can't figure out how to get it to launch IE instead.
So if I can get these latter two issues resolved I'm fine using IE. So I'll take advice on that as well.
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Safari 1.3.2

Internet Explorer has not been supported by Microsoft for some time. It is not as secure as current browsers. Firefox, Camino, Mozilla, Opera would be viable free alternatives to Safari.
    Safari
If you are experiencing slower than usual operation, there are some steps you can take to perhaps improve the speed:
General - System Maintenance is important. Have a look at this MacWorld article for guidance.
Safari - Safari menu>Empty Cache is a good start.
Unplug your cable box, wait 30 seconds, plug-in to reset your ISP's address.
Go to your Network>TCP panel. Select "configure IPv6". Set to "off". Select "apply".
Go to your User Library>Safari folder. Move the Icon folder to the trash. This folder holds the small image files appearing next to the web address in the address bar. This file can become corrupt slowing things down. When you move it to the trash, Safari creates a new folder on the restart. Over time, the icon file rebuilds itself based on sites you access.
You can also move the Safari preference file .com.apple.safari.plist to the trash. When you restart Safari you'll need to reset your custom preferences, so mark them down for reference before moving the file. This file is accessed by a number of applications including Mail. Each time the file is accessed it is susceptible to corruption. Trashing the old gives you a fresh version. The file can be found at User>Library>Preferences
Restart Safari after completing the above.
There are other steps, however, I think this is a good start. Post back with results.

  • Mime browser plugin for safari

hi i tried to listen to streaming audio from the website of one of my local fm radio stations where i live and this is the message i'm getting. The page “::.. C95 - Listen Live ..::” has content of MIME type “application/x-mplayer2”, but you don’t have a plug-in installed for this MIME type. A plug-in should be available on this page: then it gives the url: http://www.microsoft.com/Windows/MediaPlayer/
i tried to find the plugin on the website but i couldn't find it, and tried downloading windows media player 9 for OS X and it won't install. the thing its that the install file has the extention .stix. how can i find the plugin?
    thanks in advance
    Cale

    Hi Cale,
The only way you'll be able to play Windows Media content in native mode on your Intel machine is using the free plug-in Flip4Mac plug-in. This converts the Windows media files to a QuickTime format.
Beyond that, playing videos on Safari can be challenging in some instances. A good browser alternative. when Safari does not handle site content, is either Firefox 2.0 or Camino.
Also, some web sites code their media specific to the Windows platform. In these instances, no Mac browser will help you.
If no joy after installing the Flip4Mac plug-in, post the URL and I'll try the station from my machine.
One other note about "flip4mac". The preference file for the Plug-in resides in System Preferences. After installing the plug-in, "repair permissions" using Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. Once done, go to System Preferences>Flip4Mac and make sure the 1st and 3rd boxes are selected in the Plug-in panel, and the 1st box in the Movie panel.

  • Download older version of safari

My company has a Bill Pay service which, as I understand was tested successfully with Safari 5.0.  The vendor who supplies it says that they support Safari 5.0, but we have a user with the latest version of Safari who cannot use the service.  He refuses to try Firefox or Chrome as alternatives to Safari.  He asked one of our staff if it was possible to download an older version of Safari, the one that is supposed to work correctly.  I have no idea where he would look for that, or why Safari was updated, so going back to the previous version could open him to security risks.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Bill

You cannot use an earlier version of Safari without installing an earlier version of OS X with which it would be compatible.

  • Safari website scrolling

Anyonw know if there is a better, free, alternative to Safari? I have noticed something that makes it not user-friendly which disappoints me about the iPad. Has anyone noticed that you cannot scroll within a box? For example, say you're filling out a survey for something and it asks what country or state you're from, you click on the drop-down menu and it drops down just like it ought to, but you cannot scroll through the states or countries, as dragging your finger down or up will just cause the entire Safari screen to scroll. To use a loose example of what I mean, it is like flipping through the photo's of apps in the app store. You can flick your finger right or left inside the box and the photo's would slide to the right or left. But not with the Safari app. I find that not being able to do this rather a disappointment and makes using the iPad in a situation where you do not want to turn on your computer for something as simple as filling out a survey or whatever else you sign up for or purchase or whatever when you are on the go. This is not really a rant, but I am wondering if it is a glitch that will be remedied soon in the next update or is it something that has always been a inconvenience? Also, will another web browser for the iPad work better than Safari?

Try a two finger scroll in those text fields. I used my iPad for about a month before I realized that a two finger works in text fields.
Look at Mercury, Atomic and the iCab web browsers int the App Store. My personal favorite is iCab which I use constantly. All three of these offer many more features than Safari does.
Now if we could only change our default browser on the iPad, that would be sweet. Unfortunately, we can't do that either with the current iOS software, so if you click on a link in an email, Safari will still open as the default browser on the iPad. I find that annoying!

  • Using Safari and Camino browsers

Hi Discussions! I read an article in Mac 10 discussions and the person answering said they use Camino browser instead of Safari. How does that work? Do you download and only use Camino and delete Safari or do you keep both and only use one at a time? Sorry for such a sily question but I find it confusing.

    Hi Diane
All browsers are just internet access applications. You don't need to use one exclusively, as you can have several on your computer in Applications and just use the one you feel works best. You can even have two browsers open at the same time.
No question is silly if you don;t know the answer. This is what we are here for.
As well as Camino, another popular alternative to Safari is Firefox. Any of these browsers can be downloaded from their respective web sites, just make sure the download is a version suitable for 10.3.9.
So have a play with different browsers. Everyone has their own favourite.

  • Safari stalling and Bug Scan?

A few updates ago I started having frustraing problems with Safari.  I noticed that at odd times the pages would reload for no apparent reason, and that the reloading would take quite a long time.  It's often quite annoying when I'm moving between tabs and writing in one tab, though the text is usually still there once the page 'reappears'.  This stalling doesn't seem to affect any other applications, just Safari. I keep hoping that an update will fix this but so far, it hasn't.
After this started my son looked through the System Information and found some strangely named applications running (something with arabic names) but we can't find where it would be so we can delete it.  I'm not sure if this is related or something separate.  I run Avast and another one or two security programs on the computer and they don't detect anything of concern.
    Thanks for any help.

I too have noticed unacceptable behaviour running Safari on my Mac Mini running 10.4.3. I have not notied my mouse becoming inoperative but it will frequently not load pages...just stops part way into the load and then just sits there. It eventualy will just stop loading. If I try another site it might aork and it might not. A restart of safari sometimes fixes it and sometimes not. A restart of the computer will usually result in safari running properly but will only last a short while before pages stop loading. I have cleared caches several times a day trying to stop this crap but it just wont run right.
Seriously this is crap software...I can run explorer on my XP system and never have a problem. Running off the same home wireless system that I am using for the Mac. Can someone tell me what the problem is OR give me a better alternative to Safari? Maybe Explorer for Mac osx? Im just frustrated with this and dont feel this stuff should be on the market if it cannot perform any better than what I have experienced.

  • Can't load safari! clueless please help!!

I think my safari has a bug or virus. Netscape is fine, and is providing internet, itunes is fine etc but I can not even open safari. I can not clear out the cache or anything or download new versions of safari, it will not load at all. It just says it has detected an error and shut down and that I can send an error report over and over. I am clueless and need to figure this out...please help!

Can you get to the 2006-004 Security Update for 10.3.9 if you have not already done so.
You might find Firefox or Camino more to your liking than Netscape as your alternative to Safari.
Are you Backed Up. Doing "anything" has a small percentage of making things worse.
Try going directly to Blue Apple / Mac OS Software and reapply the 10.3.9 Combo Updater. That "may" cure the Safari ill. Reapply has done wonders for many.
Try going to Apple.com / Downloads if above doesn't work.
Does it tell you anything else re "a prob' has occured...?"
Are you ready to upgrade to 10.4? Check on your apps ability to work in 10.4.

  • Having trouble sending attachments from my imac thru gmail seems to like safari better i dont like safai would rather use firefox what do i do?

    Hello!
I much prefer Firefox to safari! I have an imac and I also use gmail. I tried to send an attachment document from my computer while I was in Firefox from Gmail. It would not do it and I could not close gmail nor close Firefox to try to start over. Tried this 2x. Force Quit and everything. I then started up in Safari and all went well. Is Firefox somehow less compatible with Google and gmail and Apple then Safari? I am assuming Apple and Google are separate companies but sometimes one wonders?? So what can I do to make a smooth attachment from my Imac to gmail attachment in Firefox? I really prefer Firefox it loads better and less spinning wheel. I think a lot of people agree with me. Please help!! We must have alternatives to Safari and Firefox is the best as far as I know...

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
    <b> To Enable SafeMode </b>
*You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
If it works in Safe Mode and in normal mode with all extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) disabled then try to find which extension is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.
Close and restart Firefox after each change via "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: "Firefox > Quit Firefox"; Linux: "Firefox/File > Quit")

  • How safe is Safari against XSS attacks?

I've been using Safari for a while now, and I've looked for something like no-script alternative for Safari. no-script is a good protection in Firefox against any kind of malicious websites or scripts. is there an extension to which could provide a way to make a white list or a black list in Safari? or is it possible via an alternative method?

    Hi
    Hi
extensions are unlikely to offer all the function of noscript - http://hackademix.net/2010/06/08/before-you-ask-no-noscript-on-safari/
    however, at https://extensions.apple.com/ there's
http://homepage.mac.com/drewthaler/jsblacklist/ although it's a long way from noscript - worth a trwal through the list at apple, maybe.
