Alternative to Stickies?

Are there any good note-taking apps that can float above other windows? The ones I've looked at don't seem to do that.

Ok here we go.
1.) That PSU is bare minimum for what I would require to build a system nowadays, it doesn't leave much room should you decide to upgrade the VGA to an FX, not to mention if you are going to be doing DV and otherthings in the backround, it may get you by but I would reccomend something considerably more powerful. An Antec or Enermax would be my first choice. I can elaborate further if needed.
2.) On the Video front, I recommend at least trying the latest VGA drivers from nVidia and also the latest capture drivers from nVidia as well. Now in the event that card does not like the latest drivers then use the add remove programs to uninstall the drivers and follow the Driver Cleaner procedure as outlined by the author of the utility. (I don't stricly adhere to the instructions but I can elaborate on that if needed at a later time) You may have to resort to older driver revisions based on or after that genre of card, a good place to start would be the 41.09's and later. nVidia has an archive available and Driver Heaven also has a much larger archive of WHQL'd an non WHQL'd Detonators as well.
That's about it for now.

  • "code level" document comparison software

i have been using TextWrangler and am just about to purchase an Araxis Product in order to /compare/ two or three or more documents in the hopes that i can highlight the differences and even print them out like this.
i wanted to check in with the list in case anyone had any software suggestions for particularly visual tools that do this and also to confirm that TextWrangler is not really the tool for this.
    TIA

x, did i miss something in text wrangler or is it just showing me a text based /description/ of the differences below? am i missing a setting because i am not seeing a visual readout which i really need - and really would like to be able to print out as well.
No you aren't missing anything.  It is a textual compare but it shows the two files to be compared side-by-side and when you select a difference in the bottom window it will highlight the differences in the two file windows above.  I actually prefer this to the "cutesy" FileMerge because I prefer to do all my edits in a single app (BBEdit) as opposed to using yet another app.
If that isn't good enough and you don't want to install all of xcode with FileMerge there are plenty of alternatives.  Stick "compare" into a macupdate.com search.

  • 990FXA-GD80 system Locks up in Game Play

I'm looking for any good ideas for testing or fixing ....
In July 2012, I built a system, and it seemed solid until November.  Now, it locks up 'after awhile' when playing games - it's played for as long as a couple hrs, and as short as less than 5 minutes before lockup up.  In locking up, video and audio stop (no sound, picture still on the display, frozen).  The only way to go again seems to be reset or power cycle.  MB Debug LEDs show 38-39 when locked up.  Games seen to lock up include Diablo III, Starcraft and Borderlands.  Leaving OC Gene on or off seems to make no difference.  No other OC options have been used.
I've ran FurMark and MSI Kombuster for hours with no failures.  I've ran the Windows 7 memory tester with no errors.  I've swapped out the Video card with a GeForce 9600 GSO and it locks up just the same.  It never seems to lock up browsing the internet, etc.  Anyway, I think this leaves the MB and CPU as the components where the fault must be.  I haven't found a good way to test these.
    System:
Video Card: MSI R7950-2PMD3GD5/OC Radeon HD 7950; Bios Version: 015.013.000.010. Driver Version 8.921.0.0.   Motherboard: MSI 990FXA-GD80V2  911-7640-073.
    Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000).
    CPU: AMD FX-8120 Zambezi 3.1GHz Socket AM3+ 125W Eight-Core Desktop Processor FD8120FRGUBO.
    MB BIOS Installed: B.D0.
    AMD Chipset Drivers: 8.947.0.0.
OS:  Windows 7 64 Bit Home Premium, all updates applied (SP 1).
    PS: Corsair TX 650 W.
Storage:  OCZ-Vertex3 ATA Device (120 GB STD).
CPU Cooling:  Corsair HD 100 - CPU temps never get above 34 C as reported by Core Temp.

I believe it's fixed, although I haven't played games with the final change.  Now that I've had this experience, Step 1 in diagnosing instability -
    1)  Restore BIOS to defaults - even if you think it is already at defaults, and don't have any reason to think BIOS was changed at the time instability began.  It's and easy and quick thing to do - doesn't require taking any covers off.
I ran memtest86 and the system passed.  Then, I ran the system with only one stick of memory and alternated both sticks, and the system was completely stable.  Then, I put both sticks in, and just 'cause, turned on OC Genie.  The system presented a message saying no OC changes should be manually made with the system in OC Genie mode.  Of course, each time memory was changed, the Bios screen came up asking to save the new changes to the system.
With both memory sticks in and OC Genie on, the system just completed the full Intel Burn test successfully on 'maximum'.  As the system previously wouldn't complete the first of the 10 cycles on maximum, the prospects are good that the system is now stable.
As a side note - the Gflops changed from 24 and change with OC Genie off to 29 and change with it on, a nice bump.  I've been 'going to' play with OCing on this system for a long time, just never got around to it.  Now, I guess it will just run with OC Genie on henceforth.   Also, with Intel Burn Test on maximum and OC Genie on, Core Temp reported a 41 C max temperature.  Mostly, the burn test ran at 38 C (The Temperature offset is set at 15 in Core Temp Options).

  • K8N NEO Platinum 4 Red LED at Startup

I installed a new MSI K8N Neo Platinum mainboard in my computer in December 2005, and my computer has been a pain ever since. My problem is 85% of the time when I turn the power on it just won't boot up, I get 4 Red LED lights.  If I shut it off and on half a dozen to 20 times. During one of those times it will bootup normal and work great. Shutdowns are normal.
My Family hates this and won't use it. This computer has been nicknamed the MSI Little Witch.  I have had it down to barebones out of case with just graphic card, 1 memory stick, IDE harddrive, keyboard and mouse, it will do same thing.  I've unplugged and replugged everything countless times.  It still does it. I have tried Maxtor, Samsung, and Western Digital hard drives with fresh install of Windows XP Pro, it still does same thing.  I have alternated memory sticks, same thing.  It will warm reboot as long as I don't powerdown, but if I shut the power off it will not reboot until it cools down about 20 minutes.  Then I can go through the same startup problems as I normally have.  I have not done any overclocking.
Anyone have a fix to this fustrating problem?

I have the same problem with my K8N Neo Platinum.  Except mine seems to occur after the motherboard has not had power after sometime.  For example, it happened every time I moved my computer when I moved into and out of my dorm room.  I don't know if its the same "cooling down" time you're talking about, but what usually fixes it for me (at least temporarily) is killing the power to the machine while it is on.  Regular soft resets won't work for many tries, but when the computer is on with all 4 red LEDs i'll flip the power switch on the power supply.  That usually makes it work fine.  Also another thing that seemed to intermittently trigger it is changes to the BIOS.  A CMOS reset would not fix that either.  I would have to flip the power switch and kill the power.  Then after starting it
up again it would be okay.  I have also tried multiple combinations of different cpus, memory sticks, and video cards.  I also made sure there were no shorts to ground anywhere.
Also after a year of solid operation (with the exception of this problem) I started to get Machine Check Exception BSODs in XP.  I think this was because of a possible bad stick of RAM, because that seemed to cause lockups in the way beginning of the Windows setup (where it is loading files such as Windows Executive, etc).  When I removed it and put another stick in, the windows installation would go fine.  But, that did not fix the issue with this motherboard.
I've had so many problems with the multiple K8N Neo Platinums I have purchased.  This is absolutely ridiculous  I'm extremely POed at MSI for  the widespread K8N series problems.  I am usually very tolerant to companies when they have problems with products because I understand that problems and glitches can easily occur in mass production and design.  It is virtually impossible to make a "perfect" product from the start.  But the lack of response and concern from MSI about this is ridiculous.  MSI did make an excellent motherboard here--if you can get a working one.

  • Does anyone really use the Dashboard?

I've got a lot of cool seeming widgets but find that using them is more awkward than not.
It seems quicker and simpler just to keep a calculator open and use info on the net. To display a bookmarked page is quicker and easier than calling up a widget and trying to get your info from the tiny window.
It seem to be more trouble than it's worth.
Anyone find it as useful as it seems it should be?

My wife and I LOVE the Dashboard. We use it constantly. The widgets we currently have up and use every day include NotePad, an extremely well designed and useful alternative to Stickies and TextEdit; iCal Events, which is not only a handy way to see whose birthday it is, we also have our favorite shows plugged in so we can see what's on TV tonight and tomorrow; Sing that iTune!, which downloads the song lyrics for whatever song is playing in iTunes; RADMovieTimes, a ridiculously easy way to see what's playing at the local movie theaters; Weather, which is probably the handiest widget of them all; and of course the Dictionary/Thesaurus, because we're terrible spellers.

  • 10 duke dollars available for this smple doozy!

I have just started using Java, and already I need to create a simple game, but I am having problems already.
The game is designed for 2 player with the one human player and the computer. Players alternatively take sticks from a pile, the player taking the last stick loses.
    The game needs to include:
    1. A random integer between 10-80 to generate the pile of sticks.
    2. Implement a smart mode, which means that if the computer starts the game it cannot lose.
    3. Have the facility to play the game reapeatedly without restarting the game.
    It should look like this:
The starting size of the pile is xxx sticks
    The 1st player is: yyy
    The 2nd player is: computer
    Playing in the MMM mode
    The ppp starts the game:
    turn:yyy --->> removes QQQ sticks
turn: computer --->> removes QQQ sticks
    The winner is: computer!
    Another game? (yes/no)
    Any Ideas?
    Many Thanks...
    Dr. K

I don't understand your game as described but it sounds a lot like nim or one of it's many variants. Do a google search on "nim" for plenty of info. Here is a start:
    http://www.csm.astate.edu/Nim.html
    http://www.chlond.demon.co.uk/Nim.html
Note that traditionally nim is played with multiple piles.
    The game needs to include:
    1. A random integer between 10-80 to generate the pile
of sticks.Look at the Random class.
    2. Implement a smart mode, which means that if the
computer starts the game it cannot lose. Here you have to devise and code a winning strategy. That could be quite challenging depending on the rules of the game.
    3. Have the facility to play the game reapeatedly
without restarting the game. This is pretty simple. I don't want to sound discouraging but if you can't figure this out then step 2 is out of the question.

  • K7N2G-ILSR - my experience

Well, after reading through this board's multitude of problems, I think I encountered them all when I went to install my mobo.
    Here's my setup & experience:
    AMD XP 2600+
    MSI K7N2G-ILSR
    2x 512MB DDR 400MHZ Infineon 64x64 modules
    2x Maxtor 60Y080 80GB SATA 7200RPM drives
    Creative SB Audigy Platinum EX
    Intel Gigabit Ethernet Card
    Logitech USB iTouch Keyboard
Logitech USB Dual Optical 4 Button Mouse
    LG DVD ROM
    LG DVD-RW/+RW/RAM Drive
420 watt X-PIDER Aspireusa Black case w/purdy lights & clear side
    and a whooole lota patience.
First of all, let me explain, I used to do tech support, building computers, troubleshooting bad installs, fixing problems etc, my entire job was finding problems with systems and fixing them for a retail & corporate reseller.
Here's what I did, feel free to drop in suggestions of what I should/shouldn't have done, or what I can still try.
    1) I plugged everything in and turned it on.  (yeah yeah, I realized the error in my ways real quick)
Result: Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep... (all long beeps, which kept going on for ages, I lost count at 20+ and realized it wasnt an error code)
    2) I unplugged everything one part at a time and restarting until I had 3 things plugged into the mobo, the Mobo, the CPU, and the 2 sticks of RAM, so it was one of those 3 things that were causing the problems.
Result was still the same beeping fyi.
    3) I tried every option for the memory, alternated each stick in DIMM slot 1,2 and 3.  Tried combinations of each module in different slots, until I had exhausted them all.
      Result: same beeping.
    4) Tried a 256MB Samsung module in slot 1
      Result: POST!! YAY!
    5) Went into BIOS to see what the settings were, made sure everything was ok and kept going with the install and the Samsung module - I restarted & went to the SATA RAID utility next. - CTRL-F took me to that screen.
Result: Froze on RAID Controller screen.
    6) Or so I thought, after an hour or so, trying different things, replaced the USB Logitech Keyboard with a MS Natural PS2 keyboard was the next option.
Result: POST & RAID Setup works now!
    7) Followed manual directions at this point (yeah, I wasn't taking any chances after all this crap) Went to verify the drives.
Result: Frozen drive verifaction at 72%
    8) Retried verification.
      Result: Worked.
    9) Formatted Drive.
      Result: Worked.
    10) Installed OS after loading Raid Drivers.
Result: BSOD half way through Win XP setup.  Rebooted to find the Raid Array is offline.
    11) Deleted the Raid Array, started from Scratch.
Result: got allll the way to having the OS installed & Ready to go (I almost cried at this point, and hugged my roomie)
    12) Installed Service Pack 1.
      Result: Worked.
    13) Installed Motherboard Drivers (from CD - yeah yeah, I should have downloaded the latest)
Result: BSOD.  AGAIN.  Restarted to find the Array Offline yet again.
    14) Restarted after deleting the Array and setting it up again, thinking I'd have to install the OS all over, and it booted straight into the OS with no issues.  ???
    15) Left it running for 1/2 hour to see if it was an intermittent problem.
Result: While I was changing a T-Shirt (due to excessive sweat buildup from the stress) it spontaneously BSOD'd and reset - Array was offline again etc.
    16) Reset Array & left for the weekend.
Result - Ran aaallll weekend no problem.
    17) RMA'd my memory, getting replacements today, and so far the system still works...
so... ?   What should I do?  I'm scared it'll spontaneously BSOD again and leave me PCless.
Comments/Sympathies/Suggestions welcome.  I need consoling *sniff*

    18) Replaced the memory - memory worked.
    19) Wiped the drive clean - resinstalled the OS.
    20) Upgraded the BIOS on the Motherboard & RAID Controller
    21) Updated the Drivers for the Motherboard, Video Card and Sound Card - unplugged all other peripherals.
    22) BSOD On installing the Motherboard drivers.
    23) BSOD On running any 3d/Sound programs
    24) Live updated kept BSODing every time I tried to load it.
    25) Wiped the drive clean again, reseated all cards, tried one memory stick.
    26) Reinstalled the OS - Froze half-way through intall - restarted, reformatted, reinstalled.
    27) Immediately after install worked, I updated the Drivers for the motherboard - BSOD again.
    28) Installed all other required drivers (LiveUpdate for motherboard - Video, Sound) I thought maybe it was a problem with an outdated peripheral driver.
    29) played with all BIOS settings again with the RAM Latency, clock speeds etc.  BSOD every 4-6 minutes no matter what I tried.
    30) Tried pulling out the sound card and using the onboard, re-enabling it in the bios.  Same problem - BSOD every few minutes.
    31) Tried switching up the 9800Pro with an older Nvidia GeForce 3 - Same problem - BSOD every few minutes, the only things I have not replaced or unplugged are the Motherboard & CPU.
    32) Lost patience with said motherboard - pulled it out of the case & packaged it up to send back.

  • MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum Goes Bad Overnight? Won't POST....

So i left my computer on overnight (as usual) and came back in the morning and couldn't get a video signal, odd.  So, i restarted the computer and now the USB bracket reads light 2&3 which indicates Bios Sign On.  Well, i'm tried clearing the CMOS, removing the BIOS battery for 20+ minutes, and i keep gettin the same error.  I've tried taking out some sticks of ram, putting them in 1 at a time, and even re-seating all periphials.  No luck - still get light #2 and 3.
I can't find any info on the forums or MSI how to go about fixing this.  Very frustrating..  The system was on an extremely conservative overclock.

Ok this makes NO SENSE.  I tested the battery and noticed it was at 3.03v under no load, so i tested my working Dell's and it was at something like 3.3v.  I tried the new battery, but got the same floppy error.
someone please help - i am freaking desperate and am on my THIRD board from MSI.  Here's a complete rundown of what i'm trying to boot with.
PCI Matrox Card - Known working 5 minutes before i put it in.  Shouldn't be the issue.
NO Case LED's attached.  I'm using a freakin screwdriver like a neanderthal to try and boot this thing.
No CD-ROM's attached (i've tried with attached and receive the same results)
No floppy attached (i've tried with attached and receive the same results)
tried alternating my sticks of Crucial Ballistix to boot with only 1.  no go, tried both as well
WD Raptor SATA drive. I 've tried with it connected and disconnected, and in every SATA port.
    NO USB Headers attached
I'm absolutely baffled and ready to kick this thing into the garbage..

  • Please explain me, how to remove an usb stick or memory chip? With experiences only in pc:s, I do not find on my first apple e.g. MacBook Air a solution. Until now I have succeeded to destroy one chip full of photos and - there's no life more in the port.

Please explain me, how to remove an usb stick or memory chip? With experiences only in pc:s, I do not find on my first apple e.g. MacBook Air a solution. Until now I have succeeded to destroy one chip full of photos and - there's no life more in the port...
Someone told me just to remove the chip in clicking it to the trash can and voilá - it would be done. But as I did so, on the screen appeared a text which let me know, that that way had been the wrong one...
I should have clicked Finder plus something.... which I do not now remember but which was then not found behind the Finder.
So please would someone be so kind and tell me, where I can find explanations for the most simple functions. The manual I got does not include a clue.
    Thank you!

First make sure that no application is using or has open any files on the disk. Then:
Click and drag the disk icon on the desktop to the trash. Wait for the system to recognize the action, and the icon should disappear from the desktop. It is then safe to remove the device.
Alternatively, you can secondary click on the disk icon, and then primary click "Eject (name of disk)". Wait for the icon to disappear off the desktop, and then it is safe to remove the drive.
Here is a detailed help document on the subject.

  • Install on SDCard/USB stick, toggle read-only filesystem - possible?

This is something I thought about while installing Arch on an SD card earlier. You know these small switches on some SD cards that make them read-only, right?
Would it be possible to have a setup where Archlinux is installed on a rewritable storage device like an USB Stick or an SD card, where one mode of operation would be to use it like a regular, persisting Arch install (with writeable filesystem). The second mode would be to use it similar to a Live CD, not persisting any data on the storage device and using RAM instead (mounting the root filesystem as read-only).
Basically, you could boot into regular mode (perhaps by choosing a seperate entry in GRUB), change configurations, update packages, etc. Then you reboot into read-only mode and use it as a Live CD with any changes to the filesystem stored only in RAM. This could be combined with system encryption to provide a secure and portable Arch installation that can be kept up-to date and simply by rebooting, you have a protected, volatile environment similar to a Live CD.
Is something like that possible? Has it been done already?

Comment on the "why" for Flash Device....quiet operation, less power required, faster performance and reduced size.
Faster boot time is also possible with raid applied.
As previously stated, running all in ram doesn't provide any performance improvement if the system has at least 2GB of ram.  Thus the use of swap is not required with that much ram.
This principle also applies to Flash Devices which have algortithms controlling the writes across the entire card capacity such that larger capacity increases lifetime expectancy.
Copy- on- write is also proposed for flash devices which reduces the process steps for writing to flash.
In my experience with running-in-ram with CTKArch "live" system, I found not much to endorse using that mode.  A negative of good proportion is the copy-to-ram loading time , which cannot be avoided.
Basically, faster ram is the best approach for performance enhancement in all systems.
Thus, there are herein some reasons for using flash in an arch booting system whether "live" or conventional or raid based.
My raid0 bootable system was outlined in previous post and am using it now.  It is not a USB connected bus arrangement which inherently limits performance.
I find Compact Flash in UDMA or true IDE mode to provide good performance speed of 90mb/s read and 25mb/s write to be a fine alternative to hard drives.  In raid0 read speed is doubled.  Good reason for flash devices but not in usb mode.

  • How can i transfer ALL my playlists to one usb stick

I would like to transfer ALL my playlists to a large usb-stick (256 GB). So that ui can use the usb stick in the car like my old ipod classic that has not enough space anymore.Copying one playlist is easy but many different ones!
    Pls help, tks in advance

Are you trying to copy all files?  You can select them all in the general Music item and drag that to a stick.  All the files will be placed at the same level.  Alternatively in Finder you could drag your whole iTunes > Media > Music folder to the stick.  Some of this is going to depend upon your car's player. Some will scan down multiple folder levels. Some will only do one and you will end up with one giant playlist of all your music.  You will have to find out yourself what your car does.
I don't know about iTunes 12 but I know my older iTunes does not permit you to select multiple playlists at one time.

  • Faces not sticking

I have read other's comments regarding this problem but most are dated several years ago. It seemed that people thought it was a bug and Apple would fix it. But, I am having this problem. This is a new library that I created with iPhoto Library Manager. I did that because I was having problems with splitting events. I did not have any problems with Faces with my older malfunctioning library. I had removed my preferences for iPhoto, the com. apple.iPhoto.plist, repaired disc permissions, run TechTools Pro v. 6, I had tried rebuilding my library several times (with iPhoto and with iPhoto Library Manager, but ended up creating a new virgin library and then merged my old one. My splitting problem went away but now Faces won't stick.
I then exported a picture that I was having trouble with Faces. I created a new library with iPhoto Library Manager. I imported the "sick" picture into the new library. I had no trouble creating Faces.
So, my question is, what do I do next? Do I export my entire old Library and then import it into my new Library, or is there an alternative suggestion?

Thanks for trying to help me. I have tried the drag and drop of Events into a new "virgin' iPhoto Library. The events came through alright. Is there a way of adding my albums to this new library? I tried to drag and drop them onto the new library and all that happened was an empty folder came across. Also, now my Faces node has ghost people without images in the individual frame. There are pictures there when I open the frame but no image appears when the frame is closed. Also, many errors also exist in that there are people with pictures inside of landscape scenes, for example, with five or more Faces attributed to that image while none are in the picture. The Faces are not behaving properly in that many I cannot even delete as they do not appear in the image and I cannot highlight their names under Info/Faces to delete them. This is so frustrating! Thanks again for taking your time to help.

  • Which audio format should I use on my memory stick?

Hi. My car has a Clarion HDD Navigation System MAX575 which is compatible with audio CDs and has a memory stick slot. I can't play MP3 CDs. Which file format should i use if I want to load music onto the HDD using a memory stick? I don't want to remove the unit.

    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
    1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software. Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak 2 or Vista. Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows. Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
    2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, or Vista Ultimate. Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    3. VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, or Vista Ultimate. VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows. The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
    5. VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris. It is not yet fully developed for the Mac - some features are not yet implemented - but it does work otherwise.
    6. Last is Q. Q is a freeware emulator that is compatible with Intel Macs. It is much slower than the virtualization software, Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc. There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization. The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system.
See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion.
Boot Camp is only available with Leopard. The Boot Camp Beta that was used with Tiger has expired and is no longer available for use. So contrary to the other poster's comment, Boot Camp isn't truly "free." You must purchase Leopard to get it.

  • Correlated subquery alternatives?

Before I start, this is a production system and I am not allowed to alter ANY of the tables involved: so no new columns are allowed, tables can't be changed into being materialized views, and no I can't just re-design the entire application that I've inherited! The ONLY thing I can do is change the SQL code used to perform assorted tasks. The tables involved have all got fresh statistics computed, too, so this isn't a question about improving my DBA techniques. Nor is it a question about tuning the performance of existing code (which already has good execution plans).
I have a large table, called SEARCH. It is a copy of a lot of data from a table called SOURCE (not all of the data, because some is filtered out). SOURCE has about 7 million rows. SEARCH has about 5 million. From time to time, records in SOURCE have their status changed from ACTIVE to INACTIVE. If they are marked INACTIVE, they are not allowed to be in SEARCH. Weekly, we re-synch the SEARCH data with the SOURCE -so, it's during that weekend refresh operation that this sort of query is issued:
delete from SEARCH where IDENTIFIER in (select IDENTIFIER from SOURCE where STATUSCODE != 1);It's a delete using a standard correlated sub-query. It takes slightly over five minutes to run, which is OK, but I would like to know if there's any alternative SQL or SQL constructs/features/enhancements which could be used to perform the same sort of thing more quickly. As I say, I'm not asking how to tune this sort of thing: I'm asking rather if there are alternatives to it. If there isn't, that's OK.
I should perhaps add that the STATUSCODE column is not found in the SEARCH table (because if the record's in SEARCH, it would be because the status was =1 in SOURCE originally)

I tried very hard to prevent this sort of post, but clearly I have not succeeded.
The question actually asked whether there were SQL constructs which could act as an alternative to a correlated sub-query. I see two people have been able to supply such alternatives.
Those people did not need to double-think what 'active' and 'inactive' meant, or whether the value stored in the statuscode column was 'active' or '1' (I expect they were smart enough to work out that a "status" of active can be encoded in a column called "statuscode" with a value of '1')
Those people did not read the words "I can't alter any of the tables" and then decide to ignore them as you have (creating an index on a table counts as altering the table in my book and in this context)
Those people did not read the words 'fresh statistics have been computed' and decide to suggest calculating even fresher statistics that include histograms.
Those people did not need to start guessing what my data distribution for inactive records is.
Those people did not read the words "[This is not] a question about tuning the performance of existing code (which already has good execution plans)" and ignore them, deciding in their arrogance that maybe those execution plans needed to be discussed after all.
Why can't you and others like you just stick to answering the question as asked for once? Two other people in this exchange have managed to do just that, yet so many of these 'thousands of posts to my name' frequenters of these forums seem completely incapable of doing so. It is very strange, very frustrating and I wish you wouldn't do it.
