Alternative to the ACD23

I'm about to order a MacPro (the standard 2.66) but I still have doubts on the display. I know that if I opt for the ACD23' quality and performace are ensured. However, the ACDs have now been around for a while and I am wondering whether there's something better out there and possibly cheaper.
My use of the monitor will be for photography (Aperture, Photoshop) no games, no movies. I've read with interest some previous discussions and I see that many are using other makes (like Dell, LG & HP) and are satisfied. Is the quality the same as the ACDs? Are these makes fully compatible with Mac?
Grateful for some advice/suggestions
Thanks
Fotoamatore

The only "doubts" I'd have about the ACD 23" would be about the price. I've had mine for over a year connected to my Mac Pro and I love it. The color fidelity, viewing angle, and consistent performance have never left me hanging or wanting for anything ... except maybe a ACD 30" ...
There are three types of panels on the market today. S-IPS, TN, and PVA. Here's a quick rundown:
S-IPS: Best color fidelity off-axis. While you may get some contrast and brightness variations looking at the screen slightly off-axis, the color rendition is the same. Best for photography and proofing, this is the type of panel inside the ACD 20" and ACD 23" display. Usually slower response rates, in the 16-20ms range, they can have some ghosting artifacts and the black levels aren't as good as PVA and TN panels.
PVA: Faster response rate than S-IPS (less ghosting while watching movies, playing games etc), good black levels translating into higher contrast, but if you look at them off-angle, the colors will shift noticeably. If it's a big monitor and you sit close to it, the colors may appear to shift towards the edge of he monitor due to the angle of your eyes to the panel.
TN: The cheapest manufacturing process, also produces the fastest display panel in terms of display latency. Viewing angle, and color accuracy worse than S-IPS and PVA. These are usually the bargain panels, "really big, for really cheap". Beware, you get what you pay for.

Is there a good apple based alternative to the persona finance software program "quicken for mac"?  It is a poorly supported program.

I switched from Quicken on a Windows computer to iBank on a Mac. It is a very good program, has very good free download connections to financial institutions (optional), and very good reports. The only negative is that it is just different enough from Quicken that there is a learning curve and the first month or two were frustrating -- but that is likely true of anything that you might change to. http://www.iggsoftware.com/ibank/

I know you can do better you have before.

lov2bugu, you said things the exact way I wanted to express them! It was like watching me talking to a SONY’s CEO.
I don’t really think they are not aware of the problems. SONY used to be the 27th largest company in the world, according to Forbes. They are now at the 456th place!!
They are aware of their problems and I think, the move to buy the remaining stocks from Ericsson, is a move to bounce back into the market. They found the right time, where the stock is too low and the economics around the globe don’t  look promising enough. I have to recognize them, all the bad phases they went into this year … hacking attack, loss of their factory in London, global economic climate etc.
But these are not excuses good enough not to produce quality, reliable and technologically advanced goods. I think that SONY is not to blame for the bad course SE has had. I think this is what SONY wants to revert. They want to “embody” all their technology … BRAVIA engines (TV Tech), Walkman and Cybershot tech (using Carl Zeiss lenses), VAIO (Comp tech) and finally PS3. Ericsson tried to integrate them, unsuccessfully.
Overall, I thing SONY, did not have or did not attempt to have the control of SE, hence, the answer you got back from SONY “… anything related to SE must be posted on the website of SE”. I think they will bounce. Just give ‘em some time. I’m willing to give them time, but not too much though. Just because I’ve always loved this brand!

  • Is there an alternative to the black unibody keyboard?

I'm just about to try to swap my faulty unibody Macbook Pro and I'm wondering if there's any official or third-party alternative to the existing keys.
The machine I currently have needs a new screen (bad light bleed, blue staggered tint across the bottom, and dust under the glass), new logic board (black screen of death and very high temperatures), new DVD drive (fails to recognize any brand or type of blank DVD media), and a new keyboard (the Fn and left alt keys are both loose and pop off frequently). All-told, it's been something of a poor first experience with Apple quality control, but the support staff are understanding and helpful.
Well, at least over the phone ... the hard drive failed and required a complete reinstall in-store and the genius staff didn't exactly live up to their name, leaving me to troubleshoot and save what little data I could in target disk mode from a display model.
In the two months I've had this computer the black keys have worn out very fast. The keys appear greasy, but after repeated cleanings it's clear that the protective coating on the black paint has worn off, making a section of the spacebar and several frequently-used keys "shiny."
Thanks to those two keys that like to pop off frequently, I know that the new keys are simply frosted white plastic that's been painted black on one side. Eventually, with the coating now gone, the black paint will wear off as well.
Unless Apple switches to a different coating, which I doubt they'll do any time soon, I expect the same wear problem to manifest on whichever replacement Macbook Pro is sent back to me.
So I've been looking for replacement keys. Does anyone know if the white Macbook keyboard would fit into a Macbook Pro chassis? I've used the white models before and though they can eventually yellow, the keys tend to hide their wear much better than the black ones have. I'm going to ask the authorized repair shop in San Francisco about the possibility, but I doubt they'll do the swap under warrantee.
Or is there a third-party company that produces a more rugged key than the ones that Apple uses? Thinking a textured grey one or something. The current keys feel very plastic and cheap, much less comfortable than the older silver keys on the many Powerbooks and Macbook Pros I've been given for work.
Just curious. These models are still fairly new and it will probably take some time for third-parties to offer alternatives, but I'd love to hear if someone's found a company stepping up with plans for a solution to the problem. Or even if there's one that offers pre-cut plastic stickers to protect the keys from such early wear.

Hi, nbuubu. I'm using a clear silicone keyboard "skin" on my new MBP. I don't like the way it looks, and the feel of it takes some getting used to. But it's certainly protecting my keycaps, and no crud is getting into the computer through the crevices around them.
Actually, I'm not sure how much of the getting-used-to is necessitated by the "skin" and how much of it is because of the keycaps' very flat surfaces, compared to any other KB I've ever used. I'm accustomed to "dished" keycaps that help keep my fingertips properly positioned. I guess it's possible that there just isn't room for 3D keycap surfaces in the thickness of the MBP. And as I say, I'm getting used to these.

    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as MAC Data Recovery, Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provide trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service which is very expensive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • Fake Pull Down Menus (alternative to the real thing)

To anyone who followed my tortuous post re: mouse-over menus ("my crippled site"), my resolution to the problem was to create fake or static pull down menus. I'm sure other people have done similar menus in iWeb.
This is certainly an easier - but no where as usable or effective - alternative to the real thing. Maybe someone looking to implement pull-downs will find value in checking this out.

  • Suitable alternatives to the iPod Shuffle

Having lost my old 2nd generation iPod Shuffle and having suffered nothing but problems with the new iPod Shuffle due to its intolerance to sweat, I need to find an alternative to the iPod Shuffle as I am about to start training for a marathon. Can anyone recommend any suitable alternatives to the iPod Shuffle?

Buy this: http://scosche.com/products/sfID1/210/sfID2/321/productID/1726 and use any headphones you want (I use Sennheiser water resistant ones: I sweat quite a bit). I've had no sweat problems with this combination.
It is primarily the headphone switch that fails/shorts, not the Shuffle itself if you place it carefully where you won't rain on it.
Or get a Nano and a waterproof case.

  • Alternative to the JComboBox ?

    Hi !
The last 2 days I tried to change tho color of a disabled JComboBox. I contacted serveral forums but I have not found a solution. If the JComboBox is setEnabled(false) the Background is grey and the Fourground is darkGrey and this is not useful for printscreen. I cannot read the content on the paper.
I think I have to change the objects and remove the JComboBox from my program. Is there an alternative to the JComboBox ?
    Thank you Wolfgang

try java.awt.ChoiceChoice is okay, the disabled colors are okay, but if I try to print the JPanel where the Choice is added, the content of the Choice-Object do not appear on the paper.

  • Alternatives to the Helix

I ordered a Helix 3698-4SU from Provantage back at the end of April, and I'm still entertaining dim hopes that it could ship this coming week. Meanwhile, we've all just learned that the Asus Transformer Book TX300 will be released May 21st. This seems like an intriguing alternative to the Helix. $1500 gets you an i7 processessor, 4GB RAM, 128 GB drive on the tablet, but another 500 GB on the dock in the form of a disk drive. It's a 13.3" screen, as opposed to the 11.6" on the Helix, and did I mention the price differential?
It's still speculative at this point, but what do you guys think? I'm tempted to cancel the Helix order and go for the Asus instead.

Here is the quite detailed review of ASUS Transformer Book TX300, http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/20/asus-transformer-book-tx300-review/.
While we all agree it is not really an alternative to Helix due to lack of digitizer, there is following interesting statement: "It's getting a little tiresome ending all pre-Computex laptop reviews this way, but it's worth repeating nonetheless: unless your laptop dies a sudden death leaving you without a computer, you should wait until Intel launches its next-gen Haswell chips before making a purchase." That is exactly my pain point - I desperately want the Helix which is not deliverable (pre-ordered in March) but if I get it now, I will have almost impossible task to convince my computer knowledgeable financial controller (my wife ) why should I invest so much money now just before release of Haswell. My only slightly hope would be if nobody else would not bring some similar to Helix Haswell based convertible tablet with digitizer in next 3 months. The experience learn us that it takes a looong amount of time between the announcement and the factual delivery; the ASUS Transformer Book is the statutory example, almost a year past between the first announcement http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/04/asus-transformer-book/ and the release date http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/16/asus-transformer-book-may-21st-release-date/?utm_medium=feed&utm_... which, and we know it from Helix, does not mean it would be actually deliverable.

is there an alternative to the app clean master on android?

Probably not.  Unlike Android party Apps cannot access or modify the iOS core system to clean or purge or do anything to it.
Not that you would need it anyway on an iPhone.
For future reference, there are specific forums here for each device. If your question was relating to an iPhone you could have posted in the Using iPhone forum.

  • Need an alternative to the interface NamedNodeMap

    Hi,
could anyone please tell me an alternative to the NamedNodeMap Interface in DOM ? Please attach a small example if you can with the reply.
    Thanks a lot!

The XServe RAID is pretty agnostic when it comes to HBAs. I've used them with QLogic and Atto cards without any problem (including on multiple OSes).
As long as the vendor has good Mac OS X driver support you should be fine.

  • My 4th Generation 80GB iPod is alternating between the Apple logo & the low battery screen

My 4th Generation 80GB iPod isn't opening iTunes or otherwise being recognized when I connect it to my computer. Instead, it keeps alternating between the Apple logo & the "Please wait, very low battery" screen, even though I just charged it yesterday.
Any advice would be deeply appreciated, thanks!

Shortly after this message was posted, this mysterious, annoying and quite upsetting issue occurred yet again.  (The issue originally happened when I tried to plug my iPod into my Windows 7 notebook via the USB cord that came with the device.)
So I tried plugging it into the gadget for my car's cigarette lighter, therefore using a different cord. Sadly, the Apple logo and "very low battery" message reappeared and kept alternating. Same thing when I plugged in my headphones.
But I wasn't going to let that deter me from trying again. The next stop consisted of plugging it into someone else's MacBook Pro. Wouldn't you know, suddenly my iPod was functioning again! The screen lit up with that lovely "Do not disconnect" message and iTunes launched. (Maybe it needed some Apple-on-Apple love?)  Furthermore, my iPod now works with my Windows notebook again — along with all the other methods mentioned in this post.
In conclusion, should you find yourself in the same predicament, try hooking it up to a Mac. I don't know how or why, but that's what worked for me.
    Cheers,
    echo

  • Any alternative to the BADI for scaled pricing in CCM catalogs

    Hi,
We are not able to use the scaled pricing functionality in CCM. When the item is added to the shopping cart from the CCM catalog the highest price gets chosen by default irrespective of the quantity ordered.
I understand that this can be solved by activating the BADI /CCM/CSE_ENRICHMENT and Implementation /CCM/CSE_OCISCALEPRI
IS THERE ANY ALTERNATIVE TO THIS. CAN THIS FUNCTIONALITY OF SCALED PRICING BE ACHIEVED WITHOUT THIS BADI.
    Regards,
    Srivatsan

    Hi Srivatsan,
you could use the BADI BBP_CATALOG_TRANSFER to amend the price, in order to do this you would need to pass the lower bound to one of the OCI custom fields in order to pick up this avlue and determine the correct price.
Why do you not want to use the standard implementatiom though?
