Alternative to VLC?

I find the inability to make multiple playlists too limiting in this otherwise wonderful program.  What is the next best program just for viewing movies in many formats that supports multiple playlists?  I am willing to pay a reasonable amount.  Thanks.

Yes, you can install Perian,
http://perian.org/
and watch the .flv videos in Quicktime.
Then there is no need to have vlc player anymore.

  • VLC Alternative for non-Intel Powerbook G4s?

My VLC application was no longer working and I now see that that is because Apple has forced VLC to drop support to all computers without the new intel chip. That's fabulous since my Powerbook is 4 months old.
Is their an alternative to VLC which still works on 4+ month old dinosaurs like my Powerbook? Xine Player doesn't work. I've tried it.
Appreciate the help. I've searched and only find countless, now worthless pages on VLC!

because Apple has forced VLC to drop support to all computers without the new intel chip
Where did you hear that piece of misinformation?
The VLC Media player is available for many operating systems and its developers have NOTHING to do with Apple or any other hardware manufacturer.

  • Can't play library DVD

    Hi,
My computer won't recognize the DVD. Is there anything I can do? It just shows up as a blank DVD. Thank you.

iDVD is NOT for replaying DVDs, it is for creating DVDs from iMovie.
All Macs have DVD Player installed. Alternatively use VLC.

  • Mp4 QuickTime/iTunes AC3 5.1

Hi, I just convert 300 DVDs to Mp4 with AC3 5.1 with Nero Recode 2, the problem is I have NO sound and thats because QuickTime dont support AC3 5.1
Can some one please help me, I need to play those Mp4 in iTunes, I don´t care if those Mp4 plays in 2 channels or 5.1, what I need is to heard the sound of the movies
Does the QuickTime PRO can fix this issue? or do I need some plug-in or something
    Thanks in advance

    Hey
Quicktime Pro will not solve this problem.
There a re a couple of codecs for AC3 around that allow quicktime and programs that use it to play AC3.
This link is to one. (A52 being the other name for AC3)
    http://trac.cod3r.com/a52codec/
Alternatively use VLC player, although will not allow itunes to play.
An app that is really useful to me is mAC3dec 1.6.3 f. This splits AC3 files into seperate audio files which you can add to a quicktime file.
    Here is the link
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macos/14479
For this number of movies however we are talking weeks of re-encoding and copy paste.( also will not work if above codec is installed.)
Hope that gives you plenty to think about.

You can try installing the free Flip4Mac
    https://www.macupdate.com/app/iphone/17787/flip4mac-wmv-player
or alternatively download VLC Player which plays many more formats than Quicktime.

  • Can macbook transit 854 x 480 resolution to a projector?

is resolution different when you transmit DVD versus AVI?
    does it only transmit 1200 x 800?
    tks

Usually when you connect an external monitor or TV the Displays system preference panel will automatically detect it and offer the resolutions it supports for you to select. These will also depend on whether you are connecting via a DVI (preferred), Composite/SVHS or VGA adapter.
You should be able to drag the DVD player window onto the external desktop and then when you select fullscreen it should display on it. Alternatively try VLC which allows you to select which device to display on.

  • My paradigm shift to Qt

I fist tried Mandrake in 2004, making my way through *buntu, mint, xfce, and lxde to finally settling into Arch with Openbox and apps mostly from Xfce or its 'goodies' about 4 years ago. I was so happy with this set up I only realized that Gnome had blown itself asunder well after the fact. But recently the Gnome spazz-typhoon visited itself upon me when some of my favourite programs took up gtk3 and went wonky. I had long been trying to keep everything on gtk as running one light toolkit is supposed to be more efficient on my former pico-itx and current near-death eee pc. I have always begrudged needing skype for my work.
Gtk3 calls the deal off. Since LXDE and Ubuntu Tablet are going qt so am I. gtk is no longer lighter than Qt and to me it sure doesn't seem more mature in any sense. I have abandoned years of Linuxy sentiment invested in Midori, Liferea, Abiword, Thunar and Parole and plunged into the unknown world of a toolkit I had never previously given a second thought.
To me (a user who likes to set things up just the way he likes, but isn't committed enough to exhaustively remember commands and config parameters) and maybe to some others removing gtk2 and gtk3 from my system without installing KDE has been an interesting experiment. First I've had to trade in my favourite programs for unfamiliar upstarts like Qupzilla, Qtfm, SMplayer. Some other minor utilities have been switched out, like Sakura back to xterm, and some stuff laying around rarely used is gone, gparted and gimp. Tint2 goes, unreplaced for now, I'm suspicious of the alternatives, I love Tint2 because with the setup I learned from a brief stint in crunchbang, no screen space is wasted and it looks nothing like Windows or OSX. Obconf and Obmenu are quick and convenient but not necessary. What will take the most getting used to is networking. I'm on a USB 3G adapter so I need to get used to setting up my network the way you don't want anyone you'd like to convert to linux to see. Right now that's the only major drawback. Hopefully with the growth of lxde-qt and ubuntu tablet more and more popular programs will get converted to qt. Also hopefully I'll soon figure out how to run qtconfig and get the qt4 and qt5 programs looking the same. Tea is hideous. Otherwise so far so good.

Qt is a very mature and stable toolkit. And it is by no means slower or heavier than GTK (from my experiences it is actually lighter). From developers point of view, Qt has great documentation and is based on C++, a really great language. Developing Qt apps from my experience involves much less headache than developing GTK apps.
I can tell you some apps I use that are Qt or pure X11, so you might find them useful in your shift to Qt.
    Qt:
qtfm - a really great file manager. But, I don't like this new 5.9 version based on Qt 5, it is too bloated for my taste. I think it was forked from original qtfm which was written by Wittfella, an Arch Linux Forums member. You can find the old Qt 4 version (qtfm 5.5) here.
smplayer - offers everything I ever wanted from a video player. The seek feature is great. The subtitle search feature is great. It offers VDPAU acceleration with NVIDIA cards. The alternative is VLC, also a great player.
qbittorrent - an awesome torrent client. It has a style of uTorrent from the old days, and has all the features I would ever need in a torrent client.
    X11:
bmpanel2 - great light panel. A bit hard to configure (because it requires bitmaps for themes), but once you configure it you're all set. Mine sort of looks like tint2.
loliclip - an awesome X11 clipboard manager. The only one I found that actually works without bugs and offers synchronizing PRIMARY and CLIPBOARD.
    urxvt - no explanation needed.
compton - if you're into lightweight eye candy, this compositing manager actually works, offers vsync and doesn't slow down your system.
    P.S.
What keeps GTK2 on my system is an internet browser. Chromium still uses GTK2, and there is no decent Qt browser to replace it yet.

If I Have a bunch of songs encoded as ogg files, how can I get them to work in iTunes?
    Thanks

Playing ogg vorbis files using iTunes
Alternatively download VLC Media player, it will play Ogg, FLAC and a whole variety of other audio and video files:

  • How do I get Streamclip AVI files that were saved without first installing Quicktime ALternative 1.81 to play in Premiere Elements 11?

I had Hi-8 "home movie" tapes transferred to mp4 files. To pull many short clips from these long files, I used MPEG Streamclip 1.2. The default save for these short clips was mp4. Either they didn't work in Adobe Premiere Elements 11 or I thought they wouldn't -- I can't recall now -- so I saved each clip as AVI. These AVI files won't play at all in Premier Elements. I Googled for advice and found that I needed to convert to Quicktime Alternate 1.81. I fear this had to be done before I saved the clips, but I didn't realize that. Still, I just now uninstalled Quicktime 7 and installed Quicktime 1.81, then tried converting the AVI clips files, first back to MP4 (didn't work at all in PE11) and then to MOV (only played audio). The AVI files play fine in Windows Media Player and VLC.  All I have are the original files saved as AVI in Streamclip. Is there any way to get these to play and be editable in Premiere Elements 11? I've attached a jpeg capture of a gspot readout for one of these files. THANKS!

    kidimi
Glad that you finally sorted out what you were doing and discovered DV AVI.
In your particular situation Prism would serve your purposes of generating the DV AVI 4:3 since your footage is 640 x 480. However, for others with different footage, the free Prism shortcoming is that it cannot offer DV AVI widescreen 16:9; whereas MPEG Streamclip can do the job for 16:9 as well as 4:3.
QuickTime Alternative 1.8.1 that does come with the MPEG Streamclip's required MPEG2 Playback Component (free) also meets the Premiere Elements requirement for QuickTime installed on computer with Premiere Elements to work. This works in spite of the fact that QuickTime Alternative 1.8.1 is not the latest version of the regular QuickTIme.
In post 2 of the following older thread, I detail the use of Prism (for 4:3) and MPEG Streamclip (for 4:3 and 16:9) to produce the DV AVI file.
Finished video of project looks "weird" / slightly choppy? - Elements Village
Any questions or need clarification, please do not hesitate to ask.
Moving forward, do not use AVCHD (MPEG4 AVC/H.264) or H.264.avi in Premiere Elements. It is not supported.

  • VLC doesn't save streaming audio to mp3 anymore

I want to save streaming audio from the internet to my HDD in mp3 format while listening to it at the same time.  That worked fine when I did it with VLC, using the GUI.  To be specific, here are the settings that I used:
VLC main menu: File>Open Network Stream>Open...Network>tick HTTP/HTTPS/FTP/MMS and enter the URL (http://vruk.sc.llnwd.net:12265) >under Advanced Options tick Stream/Save and click on Settings (opens Stream Output window)>Outputs, tick Play locally, tick File, click on Browse and enter filename and location for the stream saving file, i.e. /home/robert/vlcout.mp3>Encapsulation method, tick on Raw>Transcoding options, tick on Audio codec and select mp3>Bitrate 128 kb/s, Channels 2>OK, OK, to start recording. Stop or Quit VLC, to stop recording.
Two days ago I upgraded VLC from v.0.8.5-9 to v.0.8.6a-4 (which also upgraded ffmpeg from v.20060920-1 to v.20070131-1), and now the above procedure isn't working anymore.  The stream isn't playing anymore over my speakers while the encoding supposedly is going on, the vlcout.mp3 file is empty (0B), and VCL gives me the following error messages:
stream_out_transcode error: cannot find encoder ((null))
stream_out_transcode error: cannot create audio chain
main error: cannot create packetizer output (mpga)
It looks as though VLC is failing to encode the stream to mp3.  The VLC documentation (see http://www.videolan.org/streaming-features.html) in a table of "possible output formats for the transcoding module" says that for mp3 audio "you have to compile ffmpeg with libmp3lame support."  Has the new ffmpeg v.20070131-1 (in extra) been compiled without mp3 support?  If so, why?  Apparently, the older version I was using last week supported mp3.
libmp3lame is installed on my system.  There is a very recent alternative ffmpeg-svn-8218-1 pkgbuild in AUR that enables libmp3lame in the configure section of the build but when I try to install the package built that way it conflicts with ffmpeg v.20070131-1, and to remove the official ffmpeg v.20070131-1 I'd first have to remove a slew of other packages that depend on it.
Is it possible to remove VLC v.0.8.6a-4 and ffmpeg v.20070131-1 and go back to the older versions that worked for me?  There was talk of a bug in ffmpeg in this forum at the end of January; what about it?
    What should I do?

I solved the problem for now by downgrading both vlc and ffmpeg to the earlier versions that I was using before.  Saving an audio stream in mp3 format is working again now.
I believe there are problems with the current versions of both vlc and ffmpeg.
    1. vlc 0.8.6a doesn't seem to have ffmpeg enabled, i.e.
$ vlc --list | grep ffmpeg
    VLC media player 0.8.6a Janus
whereas with the older version I get
$ vlc --list | grep ffmpeg
    VLC media player 0.8.5 Janus
      ffmpeg                FFmpeg audio/video decoder/encoder ((MS)MPEG4,SVQ1,H263,WMV,WMA)
      ffmpeg                FFmpeg chroma conversion
      ffmpeg                FFmpeg audio/video encoder
      ffmpeg                FFmpeg demuxer
      ffmpeg                FFmpeg video filter
      ffmpeg                FFmpeg crop padd filter
      ffmpeg                FFmpeg deinterlace video filter
    2. The current package ffmpeg v.20070131-1 in extra may not refer to various libraries correctly in its configure parameters.  E.g. in AUR there is an alternative pkgbuild ffmpeg-svn 8218-1 from 04-Mar-2007 in which the original configure parameters were replaced as follows:
    --enable-mp3lame --> --enable-libmp3lame
    --enable-vorbis --> --enable-libvorbis
    --enable-faac --> --enable-libfaac
    --enable-faad --> --enable-libfaad
    --enable-a52 --> --enable-liba52
    --enable-dts --> --enable-libdts
Has the ffmpeg package in extra been compiled with mp3 support which is needed for the transcoding module of vlc to encode in mp3 format?  The alternative ffmpeg package in AUR conflicts with the ffmpeg package from extra, and I don't know how to tell the new vlc to use the alternative package instead of the one from extra.
Someone ought to look into this.

  • Video playback problems: ok in VLC, won't play in quicktime/MPEG streamclip

    Hi,
I have files made in .mov format in Final Cut Pro. When put on my MacBookPro, they lose their file extension. If I add the extension back on again (or not) they play in VLC. Only the audio will play in MPEG stream clip. I have downloaded perian, and the mpeg-2 extra for Quicktime, but Quicktime will still not play these files.
VLC file format says: audio files are sowt. The video file is mpgv codec.
The sad thing is I need to use Transana, a video analysis software, which only works with Quicktime.
I have checked out lots of forums, but nobody seems to have a good answer for this problem, assuming that the Perian or MPEG slipstream or the Quicktime add-on fill fix it.
I'd be very, very grateful for any advice.
    Thanks very much

I didn't but I installed it, then rebooted and yet nothing. The output changed though. Here it is.

Never mind, I already found the solution myself.
    What I did wrong was:
    - not copying the master image to the nbi folder
    - selecting the netinstall-restore.dmg image as source to copy to my HD.
The thing is, when you create a netinstall image for 10.5, the image itself is already included in the netinstall image so you don't have to do anything else.
With the 10.4 image however, you also have to copy the master image to the NetBootSP0 directory.
In the *.nbi folder contains an netinstall-restore.dmg file. But that is only to boot you to netrestore, it's not the image itself.
Other alternative is to copy the images to another folder that you share with AFP and adjust the configuration of netrestore like described in this manual:
    http://www.shellharbourd.det.nsw.edu.au/pdf/misc/osxrestoringnet.pdf
This manual was also how I figured out that I forgot to copy the image to the NetBootSP0 folder.

  • WAV file won't replay in LabView or load in WMP, but works in VLC

I'm creating an audio file for an interview with the code snippet attached (VI is very large and does a lot of unrelated processing).  This audio is recorded in the "interview" subvi.  At completion, this subvi is closed and the "process" subvi is opened.  If this process is followed, labview will open and play the WAV file with no problem.  Alternatively, "process" can be run as a stand-alone.  If this is done, I get the error 4810 at Sound File Read Open (possible reason: cannot recognize sound format).  If I try to open the file in Windows Media Player, the wav will open, but will have a length of 0.  If I open the wav in VLC, it plays with no problem.  I haven't tried saving as a new file, but this is a sortof untenable solution anyway.  For what it's worth, this problem arose when the audio recording was changed to a queue-based process.  I've attached the old (working) code for reference.
    Thanks,
    Brendan

I'm also adding a screen cap of the working (right) and non-working (left) headers created by the snippets attached above.  I don't have a lot of experience with this, but it strikes me as curious that the non-working (left) header has no value for what I think should be the File Size (data) section (as referenced here http://www.topherlee.com/software/pcm-tut-wavformat.html).  I note also that the header seems to be 12 bytes longer that most references suggest, but this is the case in both the working and non-working headers (I'm looking specifically at offset 36-47 in both).

I've reinstalled libdvdread, libdvdcss, and libdvdnav. I also set the region code on the drive to 1 (same as the discs I'm trying to play) even though this drive has worked fine before on another build (Ubuntu).

  • Airplay/Mirroring for video on VLC Player

I am expecting my mid-2013 27" iMac in the mail shortly but my question is can I watch VLC player via airplay/display mirroring on my TV?  I will be running the latest version of Yosemite. Is this possible with the Apple TV (sound included), or is there an alternative to the apple TV for this purpose?    I currently am using a thunderbolt-HDMI cable from my mid-2010 MacBook for this but would like to do this wirelessly.

So what i don't understand about the "not a file" comment is that macs have vnc installed native which allows basic "wireless" screen display on another mac.  Why not let the desktop be mirrore over to tv?
VNC (build in Mac solution) need a VNC Server (source) and a VNC Client (destination) to work.
If you connect (screen sharing) two Mac's or a Mac and a PC you will have as well a sever and a client running.
As soon as your TV enables you to install a VNC Client and let you start it, you have what you want.
Apple TV receive a constant multicast stream from the source (e.g. your Mac) to display e.g. a video. Also ATV buffers a part of the stream to unpack the compressed data, decode video / audio and deliver screen and sound synchronous.
That is a total different technic compared to a screen sharing.
