Alternative tools

Hi,
Could you recommend me other tools for monitoring RAC?
I have problem with installing an Oracle Enterprise Manager so looking for other tools.

At the command prompt type: which java
Then, assuming that the java executable is found, type: java -version (or maybe java --version). What version is reported?

  • I would appreciate any input on alternative for Book production to suit my worklflow?

    Hi
I'm trying to get into photo-book production to document my holidays, wildlife trips, etc., and I've become very frustrated with the available tools and techniques that seem to be commonly promoted. As Lightroom is the basis of nearly all of my photographic workflow, I thought that I'd see if anyone here has any experience / ideas on alternative tools / suppliers / techniques that can fit naturally with my workflow, and produce the sort of book that I want?
As I see it, the basic drawback of everything that I've looked at is that they are based around the idea of page templates, with pre-determined cells into which you drop the photos. This seems to me to be hugely constraining.
What I have at the end of my LR workflow, is a 'make book' collection containing the photos that I want, sorted mainly chronologically, but with some user sorting to group related photos. As far as I'm concerned, these photos are 'finished' - I'm happy with how LR has got them, and I don't want any other bit of software making further changes. In particular, they are cropped to a whole variety of shapes and dimensions to suit the subject matter, and ideally I will export them at the size that I want them to print in the book (at 300dpi or whatever is required) so that they don't need to be re-sized a second time.
Maybe my thinking is stuck in a rut, but what I think I want is something that gives me a blank page sized canvas, onto which I can drop the photos at the right size and shape, and position them to give the layout that I want - which will probably differ in some respect for almost every page! Plus I need to add text - captions on some but not all photos, headings on some but not all pages, and occasionally blocks of free form narrative.
I spent quite a bit of time with Blurb's Booksmart, but found that I needed to go into the rather clumsy template editor for almost every page - very tedious and frustrating. I've looked at most of the obvious European competitors - Abelli, CEWE, Bonusprint, Photobox, etc. - and they are just as constraining, if not worse.
When Adobe originally announced a Book module for LR, I was hopeful that this might be the answer, but as lots of others have pointed out, It is even more constrained.
The closest that I have come to getting what I want is actually the LR Print module, producing whole page JPEGs. I can drop the photos onto a custom template with no cells defined, and pull them to the size and position that I want - sizing is slightly fiddly, but very flexible. The big problem is text - no ability on custom layouts, and very limited in any case.
So - what am I missing? Is there a technique, or a tool, or a supplier than can do what I want? Any thoughts or comments gratefully received!
    Environment:
    Lightroom 4.2
    Windows 7 64 bit
    Canon EOS 7D - 100% RAW
    Current Workflow:
(Entirely LR apart from very occasional foray into PS for edits that LR can't do)
Import all RAWs into LR (Copy to a new folder named with date and shoot id).
Pass 1 - initial sort, rejecting rubbish and duplicates; assigning categories (colours); ratings (5 = worth a large print, 3 = small print, 1 = keep but don't use).
Delete all rejects; rename all keepers (date, shoot id, sequence); backup keepers.
Pass 2 - all develop adjustments; crop to whatever dimensions suit subject matter; revise ratings.
(very occasional detour into PS for complex edits)
Pass 3 - select and create seperate collections for web, slide show and book production.
    Print 5 & 4 star pics.
    Upload web gallery.
    ??Make book??

If the Mac came pre-installed with Mavericks you can't downgrade. Have a look at mine and den.thed's comments here:

  • No Hyper-V on windows 8.1 - any alternatives?

    Dear All,
I have recently upgraded my OS to Windows 8.1 and noticed that there is no Hyper-V with this. Hyper-V is available only with 8.1Pro, which is confirmed by MS Tech Support guys. The only option they gave me is to upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro for $99.99.
I tried to search if there are any other alternatives - and tried VirtualBox & VMWare - but facing lot of issues and not really working.
Is there any other better alternative tool (like Windows VirtualPC2007) that can play Virtual Machines?
    Many Thanks,
    Sridhar

You do not state what issues you run into. Oracle VirtualBox and VMware Workstation are the only real competitors of Client Hyper-V. If you do not wish to upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro, then Oracle VirtualBox is the cheapest solution.

  • Flash Alternative for developing app with lots of 2D Animation

First let me say, I know Flash does not run on iPad. And I'm not looking for an alternative to Flash Video.
I want to create an app for the iPad, with a lot of full screen, 24 frames-per-second animation. Basically an interactive Animated Movie, like the game Dragon's Lair, from days of yore.
I know how to do this in Flash, using the timeline and drawing and animation tools, and using Actionscript to track user clicks and trigger events in the movie.
Are there any alternative tools I can use for iPad app development, that will allow me to:
-- Draw directly in the tool
-- Do frame by frame animation in the tool
    -- Uses a timeline
-- Uses vector images to keep the file size down
-- Has a scripting language that will allow me to track the user clicking on invisible buttons and trigger new animations?
I've looked at all of Apple's Developer tools for the iPhone and iPad, but they all seem to use Bitmapped Sprites which would make the file size way too big, and animation a nightmare.
Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Well, there are several 3D game developers for the iOS operating system including EA Sports and id Software's Doom Engine. And in the Apple Software Development Kit for iOS, there are numerous API's for game development. I think you should google game development for the iOS (ipad and iphone), and see what they've got.

  • Illustrator CS4 The hidden tools palette

For some reason when I hold down the right hand side on my mouse pad to access the hidden tools in the tools palette in illustrator, it shows the alternative tools but wont let me switch to them eg I hold down the right hand pad and can see the smooth tool underneath the pencil but I cant switch tools.
It certainly has worked in the past but appears to have stopped working any ideas?

Are you perhaps thinking about Photoshop instead of AI ?
In any case, just try doing the same using the left mouse button.

  • What happended to the Solaris Crash Analysis Tool 4.2 for Solaris 10?

What happended to the Solaris Crash Analysis Tool 4.2 for Solaris 10?
I'm trying to debug a kernel panic under Solaris 10 on sparcv9. I tried the SUNWscat 4.1 package but it core dumps on Solaris 10. I found a blog entry that described the problem and mentioned a version 4.2 fix. That was from May 2006, but I have not found any update sense then. Was 4.2 ever released or is their an alternative tool for Solaris 10 that I can use?

One problem is that those of us who develop Solaris CAT do so as a "hobby" as it's not part of our actual jobs. But he good news is that management gave us the time to get a release out and 5.0 is now available here . We're now planning 6 month releases so we don't have a 5 year delay between updates.
BTW, the Solaris Crash Analysis Tool supports Solaris 10, OpenSolaris/Solaris Nevada, sparc, and x86/x64.
There are so many enhancements and bug fixes that I'd recommend reading the release notes (SUNWscat/docs/index.html).

  • Map Definition Tool support in MapViewer 10.1.2

    Hello,
What about Map Definition Tool support in AS MapViewer 10.1.2? We have used this tool with MapViewer 9.0.4, but after update to 10.1.2 it seems that there is no way to use Map Definition Tool.
So, if Map Definition Tool is not supported in new release, may be Oracle will introduce some alternative tool?
    Thanks,
    Andrejus Baranovskis

    Hi Andrejus,
there is a new tool coming (MapBuilder) that will allow users to create MapViewer metadata for all Spatial models. A preview version will be available on OTN (no dates yet). We'll let users know when it is available for download.
    Thanks.

  • Tools not showing in Photoshop CS6

Some of the alternative tools in the tool box are not showing, I already restar the program  and try to clean the catche and is still not showing. DO not what to do

    Hi TSDF,
What operating system are you using?
Does that mean when you click and hold on the icons in the toolbox, the the pop up menus don't appear?
Some of the tools in the toolbox don't have any hidden tools (zoom and move tools) and you can tell which tool box icons have
hidden tools by the small black or white kinda side ways arrow next to the toolbox icons.
Is there a particular tool you can't find in photoshop cs6?

  • Tool Palette Submenus Slow to Display

I click and hold on a tool in  Photoshop CS 6 on the Mac and it takes 2-3 seconds for the submenu to display. All my mouse settings are towards the fast end. Illustrator CS6 displays them much quicker and previous versions of PS weren't this slow to display the submenus. Can I speed up the submenu (alternative tool) display?

They should not be that slow.
Are they are faster if you right click on the toolbox tool icons instead of left click?
What version of os x are you using?
Have you applied all the latest updates for photoshop cs6 by going to Help>Updates from within photoshop cs6?

  • OTA Server emulator and other tools

    Greetings,
Some months ago i was developing smart cards aplications, using NetBeans as my IDE, and Axalto VIEWS Tools (ME simulator and OTA Manager) for the simulating these services.
ME Simulator -> Simulated the SIM card menus on the mobile device.
OTA Manager -> Simulated the incoming and outgoing SMS from and to the Mobile device.
I dont know if some of you have used this tools but i wonder if there is a free tool (or an alternative tool) for such functionalities, because my license for the Axalto Tools expired.
Thank you in advance and i wait for your answer.
    Sincerely,
    Fernando

Can anyone help me to find tools for do such things as emulate an OTA Server? and one utility for testing the sim card applets in a ME enviroment?
    Thank you again,
    Fernando

  • Free Memory alternative to iStat

I used to have iStat which included a free memory tool. Apple forced the removal of the tool. Since then my iPhone experience has been horrible. It is slugglish, hangs, and constantly need rebooting. I've reinstalled, updated, etc.
When I had iStat I used to simply free up memory when things became sluggish. Now I no longer have that option.
Does anyone know of any alternative tool or method?

I agree that resetting is not a viable solution. Whoever marked this thread as having one "solution" reply is not looking at the problem from the viewpoint of a user, but instead that of a programmer. Sure, I could restart a Windows box every time I have an issue, but, since I do not want to have to do this, I use Macs and Linux boxes. Not allowing people to use tools like the fantastic one offered as part of istat to fix a problem they cannot seem to fix is like saying "I gave you the clap and will now keep you from obtaining any treatment at all." Ridiculous.
    Put it back, Apple!

  • Tool for basic PPTX conversion

There are several of us at my company that do more advanced creation with Captivate. However, there are many educators throughout the company that only need to do basic conversions of PPTX presentations into SWFs for our LMS. We had been using authorPOINT Lite because 1) it was simple to use, and 2) it was free.
Our company is (finally) upgrading to Win7(64bit) and Office 2013 and authorPOINT doesn't support this platform. Does anyone have any suggestions for an alternative tool that does support this platform? The only other requirements are 1) it needs to be easy to use for non-technical non-programmer staff, and 2) it needs to be relatively inexpensive (and free would be best!)
    Thanks!

I highly recommend iSpring Free from iSpring Solutions.  It's a free tool from the company that makes a truly great PPT-based eLearning development tool, and their free version of the tool is rock solid.
I'm an Independent Consultant and I use a wide variety of tools in my work, depending on what my clients prefer.  However, I often recommend iSpring because I consider it to be the best-engineered eLearning development tool. In this case, the price can't be beat either!
