Alternative ways to access Notes outside of Mail.app?

Now that iPhone OS 3 syncs the iPhone Notes app with the Mac, I was disappointed that the sync is to the notes feature inside Mail.app rather than to something more flexible like a folder of flat files.
Given this restriction, what alternative ways are there for non-Mail.app users to access notes? Is there perhaps a third-party app that syncs the Mail notes with flat files or something else?
I've seen complaints that syncing Mail notes with GMail is unsatisfactory. Is there a way to sync them with Google docs or something else editable in a browser?
Thanks for any tips.

Thanks, VK.
So sad that Apple would choose to sync iPhone Notes with a closed app that only has one way to access them, buried several clicks deep.
And syncing them to Gmail as "regular messages (with unknown sender) in my main inbox" is pretty useless, too. For the sync to be useful, it should be bidirectional. Doesn't sound like there's any way to edit a note in Gmail and have it make its way back to the iPhone, correct?
yes but you can't blame apple for that one. as I said, Notes are a feature of Mail only and other mail clients including web based ones wouldn't know what to do with them. they can only understand them in one way - as messages and there is no way to edit a message in your mailbox using gmail web interface for example.
That said, has anybody figured out how the imap (?) magic happens that gets the messages out of Mail.app and into Gmail? Must one run Mail.app for it to take place?
No, any mail client will do. it's just as I said, other mail client wouldn't know what to do with the notes. they will be displayed as regular emails in a separate Notes mailbox. that's what happens when I access my AIM account using Thunderbird for example. I see a separate Notes
Would it be theoretically possible to use imap to sync the notes to some other service that would enable bidirectional editing?
this isn't a matter of an IMAP service. it's a matter of being able to edit an imap message in an email client.

  • Problems with Mails when stored outside of Mail app as .eml or .rtfd files

Sometimes I have to archive E-mails, which belong to certain projects, outside of Mail app in a finder folder together with a project, to save them together externally. I save them by one of the following methods:
    (a) Drag the Message right from Mail app into a finder folder. This works fine, but in this case, when I use Spotlight search, it seems that Spotlight does not find these E-mails (.eml files) any more.
    (b) To solve this problem, I use the "Save as" ("Speichern unter") command from Mail app. By doing so a RTF file is created which is properly indexed by Spotlight.
When the E-mail contains one ore more JPG files, a RTFD file is created. But these pictures are missing in the RTFD file! In Tiger they were properly included in the RTFD file, but in Leopard they are not.
Seems like two Leopard bugs. I have already sent a feedback to Apple, but I would like to know if others have the same issues and if there is a solution to them?

Mulder, first let me thank you very much for you taking your time to help me understand.
Let me more precise: As long as I was using Panther or Tiger, I was able to save any email - be it a sent or received one - that included files - be it pictures or anything else like doc, xls or zip - to an RTFD file by using the "Save as" comand from the file menu. The resulting RTFD file then properly contained the files. I am absolutely certain that it did not make any difference what kind of attachment was included in the original message, they were all perfectly saved within the RTFD container. I did this for years.
Since I use Leopard, the very same comand produces RTFD files as well, containing the text file, but not a single one of the attached files.

  • How can I update the "Last Saved" time of individual notes in the Mail app

I have about 30 notes in my Mail app, which I conveniently sync to my iPhone via iTunes.
Problem is, the iPhone only sorts by modification date, whereas I want them sorted alphabetically.
If I knew where the individual notes files were located on the Mac, I could write a simple shell script to sort them and then touch the files to update the modification date.
I look in user/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/Notes.mbox, but the individual notes files don't appear accessible.
Does anyone have any idea how I can accomplish what I'm after?
    TIA

I suppose you could copy it from the Raw Source. View>Message>Raw Source

  • Notes Synching With Mail.app -- Unwanted

Following my update to Snow Leopard, all of a sudden the Notes from my iPhone (OS 3.1) started showing up in my email. I do not want Notes syncing with Mail.app. How does one turn this "feature" off?
I have searched through the iPhone settings in iTunes, the settings panel in the iPhone, MobileMe prefs, Mail.app prefs, several System prefs and looked through a bunch of threads here. Lots of talk about synching Notes but most of it prior to Snow Leopard and nothing about killing it. (In case the order makes any difference, the phone went to 3.0 then the Mac to SL then the phone to 3.1.)

Info pane at the bottom, uncheck the Sync notes box.

  • Access Apple Mail notes outside of Mail itself

Does anyone know if there is a program that simply lets you view/edit your Apple Mail notes OUTSIDE of Apple Mail? I just can't wrap my head around opening my email client to write random notes. I can't seem to find anything.
    Thanks!

    Ah Thank You, [ Jeffery Jones2 ] !
I now remember stumbling across this and wondering why I was in Mail and not Finder when I entered Time Machine a while back. <hehe> Now I get it!
Easy restoration of my Mail Notes! All is well again now that I verified iTunes sync is turned "off" and that the MobileMe sync is turned "on"—no more conflicts.

  • Unread message count not updating in Mail.app

I am running a MBP 15" with 10.4.10 and Mail.app (version 2.1.1 build 752.3) and as you can see in this screengrab here:
the unread message count is not correctly updating.
This may actually be something for the Mail dev' team to handle, unless some one else out there in the groups has some inside knowledge about this issue.
For that matter, I do not know how to forward this to the Mail dev' team inside Apple, so if any one else does, please do.
    Cheers.

    What screengrab?
What type of account do you have -- POP, IMAP or .mac? How many accounts do you have? Do you access your account from more than one computer?
Unread message count where -- on the Mail Icon in the Dock or in individual mailboxes? In the Dock, the Unread message count will NOT reflect any messages moved to custom mailboxes by Rules, but only those in the Inboxes.

  • HT4539 Is there any way to auto-start the Apple mail app?

Our company offers a 7/24 service where a user can leave a voice mail in our system and our mail server will send an urgent mail message to the iPhone of the employee on duty so it can be handled in a timely manner. The problem we are having is that if someone turns off their phone and starts it again (or if the user opens the running apps window and shuts down the mail app), the users are not getting those urgent emails.
While I understand having an auto-starting app would be undesirable, since every developer might start activating that feature, does Apple iOS6 have any way to tell the mail app to restart on iPhone boot? We have a few people using other smartphones with a competing O/S that sounds similar to "asteroid" ;-) and the mail appears to be always operational, even if you shut down the app.

And be sure to set up Notifications for mail so the phone will beep, buzz, flash, whatever when a message comes in.
One issue though (discussed elsewhere): the phone will only Notify once. If you didn't hear or see it, there won't be any further warning (unlike, say, Blackberry's flashing LED). You're gonna have to grab the phone and at least bring up the lock screen to see if there are any notifications queued up.

  • Folders with forward slashes in the name not appearing in Mail.app Exchange

Has anybody else seen this? For folders with forward slashes in the name, such as "Meetings/Events", the folder shows up in Outlook Web Access and over Exchange in Entourage 2008, but not Exchange over IMAP with Mail.app in Snow Leopard. The folder shows up once I remove the forward slashes, such as "Meetings Events" or "Meetings-Events" or "Meetings and Events".
Is this a known issue, and is there a fix besides renaming the folders?

In Unix the forward slash is an illegal character for a filename. In general you should avoid using it as the forward slash is used in path names such as /Folder/File. Avoid using the colon as well because it's commonly used as part of a disk identifier in OS X.
This is not any different than avoiding the backslash in Windows filenames.

  • Outgoing Mail not working with Mail.app in 10.5.7

I am helping my mom set up her email accounts on her new macbook laptop. It has 10.5.7
I have tried setting up two different email accounts in mail.app, one is a roadrunner webmail account, and the other is a gmail account. For the roadrunner account, I followed their instructions, which can be seen here: http://help.rr.com/HMSFaqs/eOSXmail.aspx
With the gmail account, mail.app was able to do the setup itself from the email address and password.
I know that the account information is partially correct because with both the accounts they were able to correctly download email onto the computer into mail.app. But both accounts have not been able to successfully send an email.
I can provide any other information about the settings used in the outgoing server or advanced information if it would be helpful.

This is so strange. The exact same thing happened to me yesterday. Suddenly, on my Mac and my PC, I was no longer able to SEND email. I am able to receive email...just not send. I too am a Comcast customer. I contacted Comcast and they, of course, said the problem had to do with the servers that my email client is trying to access and that it had nothing to do with them. We then set up my Comcast.net email account (which I never use) and it worked fine (sending and receiving).
So, I switched my other accounts to use Comcast's smtp server and that worked on the Mac only. I can now send email on my Mac but not on my PC.
This leads me to believe that it is not something wrong with my email client (since I have the problem on both my Mac and PC) but instead, something is up with Comcast.
I checked and it turns out that Comcast just implemented a new Acceptable Use Policy which specifically implements a NEW traffic management policy. This was JUST implemented this month. So, I am getting the sneaking suspicion that Comcast is somehow denying me access to those SMTP servers and I have to use their SMTP server instead.
Does this make any sense to anyone???? I am at a total loss here.
    Thanks,
    Susan

  • NetBoot: full text search not available in Mail.app

    Hi,
we got a NetBoot 10.5.2 image with a Mail.app IMAP account already set up.
When you do a search in Mail.app, the "Entire message" button is greyed out and not available.
This probably has to do with Spotlight not playing well in this circumstance...
There is a way to solve this?
    Thank you

I don't know if this will apply, but it's worth checking.
    http://www.dextechs.com/osx105spotlight.html
It mostly revolves around fonts that can't be indexed by Spotlight, and that may be the case on your NetBook image.
    Hope this helps.

  • Attachments not received in Mail app

I received a couple of email where the attachment is not received in the Mail app.  It doesn't show up anywhere. The attachment is received on my iPad, iPhone, and iPod with no problems.  Also, I have another message where the html images are not displayed on the mail app, but show up properly on my other devices.  I have the preference "display remote images in HTML messages" checked and I'm connected to the interent.
I'm using IMAP with my gmail account.  Ironically, both messages are from Apple, one has a receipt in it.  I've downloaded the receipt directly from gmail, but I'm worried that I'm going to miss something else if I don't fix this problem.
    Thanks for your help.

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Reply and forward icons not appearing in mail app when I respond/forward from Gmail

When I reply or forward an email within the iphone mail app, the arrow icons showing I replied or forwarded appear beside the email in my iphone mail app inbox.
When I reply or forward from gmail, these icons do not appear in my iphone mail app.  Does show that I have read and flagging/unflagging works.
    Any thoughts?

Close out of the mail app, double tap the home button and completely close out of the app.
Then do a reset, no data loss.  Hold down the home/sleep button together until you see the apple logo and then release, then wait for the phone to boot back up.
    Then check your mail again.

  • Why "Open in pages" not showing in Mail app ?

    Hey!
I just bought Pages and Keynote apps, and i'm trying to open PDF files from Mail app.
The problem is that in "Open in..." , Pages and Keynotes are not in the list of applications!
    Someone know why?

You can annotate pdf files with Good Reader - using the paid version anyway. I didn't know there was a free version.
    http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/goodreader-for-ipad/id363448914?mt=8
There are other apps that will let you annotate pdf files as well. iAnnotate is another.
    http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/iannotate-pdf/id363998953?mt=8
BTW - you can import Word Documents into Pages as well as Pages documents. But you are looking for a solution for pdf files. Check out the apps above and you can search for othes.
