Alternative ways to bookmark/create desktop icons?

I am trying to add a webpage as an icon on my desktop on my iPad using the feature provided in Safari but the webpage redirects when I try to access it and I can only bookmark the URL after it is redirected. Does anyone know of a way to make the icon for the original URL and not the URL that it redirects to?

  • How to create desktop icon that is a live URL

I am sure I'm overlooking something obvious and that this is a stupid question, but I can't figure out how to do something in OS X SL that is a snap in Windows: How do you create a desktop icon that is a "shortcut" to a web site URL, so that double-clicking the desktop icon causes the default browser to open to that page? All I can figure out is how to save a page to the desktop as an html file through the file menu. But that creates both the icon and a whole folder of other files and appears to just open a static (historical) document. Basically I am just wanting to make a "bookmark" to a single site right on my desktop. (It's my Delicious site where I keep all my bookmarks for all browsers on all devices.)

The easiest way is to just drag the URL from Safari's address bar to your desktop. This will create a .webloc file that points to the URL. Double-clicking the .webloc will launch the browser to navigate to the stored URL.

  • How to create a Windows 8.1 Desktop icon from the Metro/Start and/or Search Tool?

I'm a Desktop user, but often find myself needing to go to the Metro/Start and Search Tool to find programs and App(let)s in order to run them.  However, after doing this several times for many programs, I find myself wanting to create
Desktop icons to run the programs more easily.  Is there a way to do this from the Metro/Start Icon and/or Search Tool results?
If not, Microsoft, please consider adding the ability to do this.
It would be very nice if this ability supported all of the icon types shown in the Metro/Start, Search Tool, and Control Panel interfaces, e.g.: Metro Apps, Desktop Programs, Charms, and Control Panel Applets.
Currently, there is a way to pin the Metro/Start Icon to the Desktop, but the Taskbar will get very cluttered with even only a handful icons.
It would be very nice if the desktop icon created by this also supported the context options that the program/app(let) now shows as Tasks when the icon is pinned to the Desktop Taskbar.
Additionally, it would be nice if I could also simply drag a Pinned Taskbar icon onto the Desktop area, again, retaining it's Tasks as context menu options when the Desktop Taskbar icon is right clicked.
This ability would be very helpful for people needing to get to programs and App(let)s, without having to resort the Metro/Start and Search Tool, because when there are a lot of Metro/Start icons, I have well over a hundred icons, it
can be very hard to find one simply eye-balling lot.  The Search feature is much better, provided I know the name to look for and can remember it.
Finally, this ability would be very helpful, because the kinds of desktop shortcut icons that I can create using the New Shortcut option, assuming that can I find the program/App(let)'s name and path information, do not support the context options
that the icons could in Windows 7 when an icon is created while installing the program.

  • Ethernet connecton and desktop icons

configured the new time capsule as an ethernet shared HD via two ethernet cable to my wifes macs. Created desktop icons for her to use (she wants to use it as a 'shared' drive for her two computers. The problem is that every time her computer wakes up the icons disappear. Any suggestions to make them permanent? Tried doing it via "log in" options (like I do with my own NAS drive) but ti doesn't seem to work flawlessy for her.

    Sorry about the delay.
Right now, my wife is using FireFox for her browser, while I use Safari. It works because, this way, she has her bookmarks (for example) and I have mine. She has her "settings"; I have mine. (etc.) We all loved it when we were using the ATT Yahoo! browser I mentioned before.
Okay, the kludge I was thinking about would only give you "half" of what you wanted here, and I'm not sure it would be the important half.
If for example, you had a Yahoo home page and your wife had an iGoogle homepage, what we could do is save a copy of your home page to your desktop as a web archive, called "his," and save a copy of her home page to your desktop as a web archive called "hers". To open to your homepage, you'd click on the "his" web archive. You'd be opening the file on your desktop, so it wouldn't "update". But all the links that are in it would work, and if you put in a link to your "real" home page into the home page (before you archived the "his"), you could then click on that and you'd be at your homepage proper. So, you'd never even have to see "hers" on the way to "his".
But settings and bookmarks are trickier. Safari is set up so that you get one set of Safari preferences/settings/bookmarks/history/passwords *per user account.* So even if there was a way to install two different Safari programs in the same user account, both Safaris would end up looking at the same set of preferences and settings (etc) files for that particular account. So you wouldn't be able to segregate, say, bookmarks using just Safari.
You could perhaps segregate two sets of bookmarks using an extension like Delicious Safari or Pinbar, where you'd end up hosting two different sets of Web Hosted bookmarks. But I'm not sure that that's what you're after, and that doesn't help if you wanted to have completely different sets of extensions, or security settings, or font smoothing or font zoom levels and so on.

  • Rogue desktop icons

Once in a while, for no apparent reason, All my desktop icons snap to grid on the right half of the screen. I find them there at startup., and I have to painstakingly reposition them where I want.
This is in spite of the fact that in the Finder's View menu > Show View Options > "None" was selected.
It was suggested that I should delete the .DS_Store file of the Desktop. It is an invisible file which I accessed and deleted via Disk Warrior, but this promising tip did not work.
I wonder if a gifted hacker out there would know of a way to force my desktop icons to remain where I placed them, and I am curious to find out if I am the only one with this problem.
I use an Intel Mac mini 3,1 2.26 GHz 2Gb RAM, running Snow Leopard.
    Thank you.

From a recent article in MacFixit:
Performance tip: Keep the Desktop clutter-free (empty, if possible)
Mac OS X's Desktop is the de facto location for downloaded files, and for many users, in-progress works that will either be organized later or deleted altogether. The desktop can also be gluttonous, however, becoming a catch-all for files that linger indefinitely.
Unfortunately -- aside from the effect of disarray it creates -- keeping dozens or hundreds of files on the Desktop can significantly degrade performance. Not necessarily because the system is sluggish with regard to rendering the icons on the desktop and storing them in memory persistently (which may be true in some cases), but more likely because keeping an excessive number of items on the Desktop can cause the windowserver process to generate reams of logfiles, which obviously draws resources away from other system tasks.
As such, keeping as few items as possible on the Desktop prove a surprisingly effective performance boon. Even creating a single folder on your Desktop and placing all current and future clutter inside, then logging out and back in can provide an immediately noticeable speed boost -- particularly for the Finder.

  • Lost Java DeskTop Icon

    hello
I am new to Java programming. I have downloaded and installed free Java version JDK 6 SE on my computer. After the download and install was complete I received a message saying that the download was successful. Then clicking on the newly created desktop icon which then prompted me to reinstall once again. But I managed to get this issue resolved.
But I no longer have an icon situatated on desktop for me double click on to launch this program. I am using windows 7 64 bit computer. Should there be a desktop icon set up on the computer or perhaps not?
What can I do to get this program to open up for me in the hopes of setting up a short cut to desktop?

What do you mean by "launch this program"? The JDK is not a program (at least not in the usual sense). Think of it as a library that other programs (including those you write) can use.

What you can do is move them into a sub folder where they are all grouped into one icon. Gets them off your screen, sort of.

  • 'Fuzzy' desktop icons: is there a way to change them en masse?

I apologize if this has been asked before, but after searching the discussions I couldn't find a thing similar to this (non-critical but irritating) issue.
I have had a Mac for some time, since Classic OS days. I've noticed that some of the older files I have still have what can best be described as old-style icons.
I thought the best way to explain what I meant was to include a screen shot below. As you can see, the desktop icon for Millais' Ophelia is pixellated beyond recognition. Changing the files (via "Show View Options") to "Show Icon Preview" makes no difference. Looking at the file via Get Info shows that the file itself is AOK, that the Preview looks fine.
This is not limited to GIFs... JPGs, PSDs, TIFs are all similarly affected.
I was wondering if anyone knew of a quick and dirty way to strip or scrub files of their existing desktop icons and allow it to be rebuilt with the lovely OS X desktop icon... short of opening each file, saving it, and closing it again (which is a problem for JPGs and the inherent lossy-ness).
    Thank you in advance!
    sandra

The problem is that the old files already have a custom icon, albeit a very old very small custom icon (they are 32x32 pixels, versus the "normal" 128x128 icons, or the now possible 512x512). When a custom icon is present, that is what Finder will display. If NO custom icon is present Finder will, if told to do so in View options, draw a lovely icon. Indeed, in CoverFlow view it will draw 512 icons.
One way to achieve this happy state is to do GetInfo on a file, select the wee little icon at the top (a nearly invisible blue halo will surround it), and then do Cut from the Edit menu or with Command-x. This will remove the old custom icon without changing the file in any other way, leaving your jpegs in exactly the same state they were in.
Doing this for a whole buncha files is obviously tedious. I suspect you get an Applescript or Automator action which would batch process a folder, but I'm not much of a scripter. People who are scripters are often very helpful, posting a cry for help in either forum might get you something to do the job:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=724 The Applescripters are here
http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1261 The Leopard Automators are here
There is a little program called CocoThumbX you can download, then drop files in batches and check the box to Remove Thumbnail, and it will do so. It can also create new custom thumbnails, at 128x128 pixels.

  • Prevent desktop icons from being created

    Hello all!
Does anyone know of a way to prevent users from creating new icons on the desktop? We do not want to use the "hide all icons on the desktop" option because we still allow them to use "My Computer" and "Internet Explorer", plus any ZEN pushed icons that we place on the dekstop after they login. We only want to prevent a normal non-localadmin user from creating new icons on the desktop.
    Thanks!
    Larry

Have you tried redirecting %DESKTOP% to a Read-Only share?
You could script the removal of NTFS rights to the DESKTOP folder in the
user's profile dir via ZEN as well.

  • One way sync of Bookmarks to Desktop

I have turned off syncing between my laptop and desktop because it was not working and would like to turn it back on again.
Currently the correct version of bookmarks exists on my laptop.
Is there a good way to get the desktop to be updated with the laptop's bookmarks?
I would like to be syncing via MobileMe in the future.
    Thanks.

god. thanks. needed to do that for a long time.
can I please also ask you if you have any experience with the dock sync? this seems to have cleaned my bookmarks up nicely but the dock sync does not seem to be cleaned up and I have taken it off and am doing this manually. do you know how this is supposed to work (perhaps i am misunderstanding)?
for instance, how does this tool know /which/ order to put the dock icons in - if for instance there are three icons that are the same on both docks but they are in different orders. does it just pick one?
say there is software installed on one computer that is not on another and one has a dock icon for this software. i assume it just skips this. but what if the software is on both computers but only one has a dock icon for it. is it supposed to add the icon in the case where there is not one?
lastly (I assume unrelated but perhaps not) - have you ever had dock icons move around on their own while you were trying to relocate them? say for instance if I was dragging the utility icon to the left hand side of the dock and put it where I wanted it and then - whoo-oop - it slipped all the way back down to the right hand side somewhere...
    Thanks a ton.

  • Desktop icons created when program is started

I have just purchased a new mac desktop and I have loaded a few programs onto it. Everytime I open a program from my dock a desktop icon is created relative to that program. Very annoying when I want to keep my desktop clean.

You may have to just install the programs, which I don't think you ever really did.

  • How do I create a desktop Icon for Adobe create pdf?

How do I create a desktop icon for Adobe create pdf?

    Hi, ken.
You can access ExportPDF from your computer more quickly in three ways:
You can download and install the CreatePDF Desktop Application. More info is here. With this application, you can drag PDF files onto a desktop icon and have those converted to Office files. (If you subscribe to the CreatePDF service, this application will also allow you to create PDF files.)
You can download and install the newest Adobe Reader and access the service using Reader's Tools Pane on right. Then, any time you have PDF open in Reader, you can (with a couple of clicks) convert that PDF to an Office file.
You can drag the webpage icon from your browser to your desktop. This will create a shortcut to the ExportPDF website on your desktop. Here are some instructions for doing that using Internet Explorer or Firefox.
Let us know if you have additional questions or issues.
