Alternatives for podcast searching?
With every upgrade to itunes, the podcast feature has become worse (even though the number of podcasts have increased). I can't search by date anymore and key words only bring up a few results which are usually corporate owned. Three or four years ago I could type in a word like "gardening news" and get about 1000 results and then I could sort and drill down by date, program, topic, and get the most recent shows. I've found the most interesting podcasts are usually the ones that AREN'T made by broadcasting companies, such as Kindle Chronicles, Relic Radio and Zencast. Unless you know the EXACT name of the podcast you want, the results only direct you the few popular items.
Are there any plugins or alternatives to search for podcasts besides itunes? Or is there a widget that takes the itunes podcast database and offers it up in a more usable way?

I, too, am trying to set up Podcast Capture on my macbook pro and experienced the same difficulties as vicfromchicago. Following the procedure in the account setup window I am prompted to enter a "Podcast Producer server" to connect to. I responded by entering my MAC IP Address to which I got the prompt "Invalid arguments". I don't know where to go from here!! Any suggestions? Thanks..

Hi! Could someone confirm that the categories (at least the second category, e.g., "Language Courses" where the first category is "Education") is no longer used to index podcasts? E.g., if I search for "spanish language courses" I get only 16 podcasts, which don't even include popular spanish language courses such as SpanishPod or SpanishPod101. I think this was different until very recently.

thanks for your answer, but I believe that this is a different problem: SpanishPod and SpanishPod101 are among the top 15 featured podcasts for the category "language courses" and they still don't appear when I search for "spanish language course".
Hm, maybe the problem is a different one than I expected: when I search for "spanish language courses" (with "s") I get all the podcasts that I expect to get, when I search for "spanish language course" (without "s") I get only a small fraction. As far as I remember, the plural-"s" hasn't mattered before in searches but it appears to matter now. Maybe the allowed deviations of the spelling in searches has been lowered recently. Well, in this case the "problem" is less important than I thought. -

Instead of the following XQuery statement, what could be alternatives, regarding re-writing the statement, via options like:

- xpath

- etc

Alternatives for library management?
Clearly, Apple has decided that from now on iTunes is a music player only, designed it for use primarily on small screens, and taken steps to remove most of it's functionality to manage large libraries. Many of the removed features were those which helped maintain (duplicate finder) and organize (multiple windows, lack of detailed view of fields except in song view), and navigate (any time you change a list or view, you go to the top of the page rather than returning to where you were). What's left is a program that is bright and pretty on a small screen and makes it easy to buy and play new music. Clearly, they are positioning the product as a good-looking alternative for when they introduce a streaming service.
While the program has never been ideal for managing large libraries it has been "good enough" to preclude the development of many alternatives for the relatively small percentage of users with more than 10,000 songs or those with extremely varied or classical music tastes, especially since it was closely linked to the store and could easily sync with Apple products.
Although my immediate reaction was, like so many others, to revert to 10.7, the Apple ecosystem is such that eventually there will be no option but to give in to a later version. Already, many of the Mac apps will not work on my OS X 10.6.8 , 2G of RAM mini, and to move to OS X 10.8 will, according to all accounts, require a new machine with more memory.
So far, my search for something to use as a "back end" data manager for iTunes seems to have turned up WinAmp for Mac, Songbird, and Doubletwist. Can anyone provide insight on any or all of these programs, specifically on issues such as field customization, sorting and playlist creation, and whether or not they can intergrate well enough with iTunes that I can still use it to sync my iPod and download podcasts and iTunes U materials while doing my maintenance and organizing on the alternate program? Or are there other programs out there that I may have missed?

The reason I'm concerned about rolling back the version is that I have reached the limits of my 1T external drive and need more capacity. My original thought was to just get a new mini with a bigger external drive. I've begun having "hiccups" with the existing media drive (it's read a lot of CD's over the years). Now, neither the mini nor the Mac come with drives, and even the diehard Apple people who buy their usb external drive through Apple give it only a 3 star rating. So, whatever way I go, changes and $$ are at hand. My understanding is, if I get a new machine with Mountain Lion (or Constipated Goat, or whatever the latest aninal is -- OS X 10.8) iTUnes 11 is integrated and basically can't be removed. Also, I've synced my iPod classic (which they seem to be ready to drop any day -- no updated models in a couple of product cycles) with iTunes 11 and from what I've been reading, even though there are methods for rolling back the program, it is much harder to get the devices to roll back, and that seems to be the point where people are losing access to their material.
The reason itunes was acceptable before and is not now is that Apple has essentially decided for us that we don't need any of the, for lack of a better phrase, database managemtn functions, that those of us with large libraries have come to depend on. My wife already says I spend way too much time with my 65,000 song and lecture library, and the new iTunes adds three to four additional steps to almost everything I want to do.
To browse the store, I have to leave the playlist I'm playing. If I spot a song or an album that looks interesting, to check if I've already got some or all of it, I need to leave the store, get to the songs list under the main library, do my search, go back to the store and then, if I make a pruchase, go back to the music library and then click back to the playlist I've been listening to (unless I finished with what I started listening and want to change where I am, in which case, I have to go through the process of changing windows that many more times. And, of course, everytime I do change a window, I have to scroll back to where I was.
When loading in a new CD, aside from all the back and forth in screens, at the end (now that I've reinstated the sidebar and figured out how to show downloads) it defaults to album view which, if you've got songs and spoken audio material from 2500 sources, is to all intents and purposes, useless. So you go to yet another window (songs, which is the only window which allows you to search on more than one field) to see if you've ended up with any duplicates, which you have to do by searching because they've removed that feature as well.
Get the idea? Not only are uselful and functional features removed, but even many of those that remain have to be discovered by trial and error. I come from the era of top 40 radio -- the same few songs over and over, and next week the new batch of songs is out and the old ones discarded, gone to who-cares where. That, essentially, is what they've done to iTunes by removing all the features that made managing your media easier in favor of only those features that make buying and playing the newest thing as easy as possible.
BTW, I would have no problem moving to Android if I can find the software I need. I've been using PC's since the DOS command line days, and basically did not move into Apple's sphere until I got my 160 Gig iPod. If I can find another device as small and with as big a drive, and a system to manage my music with, fine by me. Apple clearly no longer wants me or all the music I've bought from them any longer. -
since upgrading my phone to 6.0.1, I'm using way too much data. I believe it's the podcast app that's not loading shows while I'm connected to wifi. I have the 3g turned off for podcasts??? also after a phone call or an alert it starts playing a podcast?
I've also had the same issues, after upgrading to IOS 6.0, the apps in my iPhone 4 were crashing and the battery life run out very fast.
The only solution worked for me was to remove all mail accounts (Exchange/Gmail) from my iPhone (in settings) and then add them back.
The crashing were stopped! also the battery was back to normal.
I found the solution by first looking at the crash logs (in IOS 6). you can find them at Settings -> General -> About (at the bottom of the About menu you will find the option that opens the logs).
There i saw many logs about Low Memory crash. 99% of the logs were pointed that the largest process (use the most memory) during the crashes is "dataaccessd".
I search in the web and found that this process is a deamon process that reponsible the Mail accounts (like Exchange/Gmail) and contancts list.
I've installed the app "System Status - activity monitor" which shows important system info like CPU usage, Memory usage and running processes.
Before apply my solution (deleting the mail accounts) i saw that the CPU usage was very high which consume the battery very fast. Also i saw that the memory (RAM) was run out.. which probably what cause the crashing..
After deleting the mail accounts (at Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars) i check again with the System Status app, and saw that the memory and CPU were back to normal.
Adding the mail accounts back, still everything work ok

Alternative for Open , Fetch cursor command

I am populating data from glpca table using Open Cursor statement with hold as shown below:
OPEN CURSOR WITH HOLD cur1 FOR
Select data from the purchase order header table.

FROM glpca
WHERE docnr IN s_docnr

Now when i try to Fetch the cursor even restricting it with PACKAGE SIZE command ( value 998), my program get struck over here for 20-30 mins or more den that & session gets out for the user at client end coz of large data. I checked the value of cursor , it was around 670-700 approx.
The query is shown below:
DO.
fetch rows from cursor depending on package size
FETCH NEXT CURSOR cur1 INTO TABLE t_glpca
PACKAGE SIZE p_size.
IF sy-subrc NE 0.
CLOSE CURSOR cur1.
EXIT.
ENDIF.
The program get struck at above fetch next cursor command.
Kindly suggest me some other way to handle or populate the data or any alternative for Cursor command.

The combination with OPEN CURSOR ... WITH HOLD allows package processing of tasks that require a database commit inside the loop. A normal SELECT loop without holding the cursor would be interrupted by a commit -> short dump.
MY TWO QUESTIONs
1. In SAP tutorial it states that
"WITH HOLD addition in the OPEN CURSOR statement allows you to prevent a cursor from being closed when a database commit occurs in Native SQL"
If I don't specify any commit statements in my abap code and user cursor without the addition with hold.
Can a commit be executed anyway and I get an unwanted commit and thus an unwanted close of my cursor?
Or do they mean that "if you specify commit in native sql"?
2. Thomas says a normal select loop without the cursor holding would be interrupted. Interrupted by who? Again, it seems like there is an "unwanted" commit here? Again, can there be any commits and unwanted interrupts if I dont specify it somewhere in my code?

Podcast Search results not showing all episodes
I'm new to podcasting & our podcast isn't showing up properly.
When you look at our podcast in the search results, only one episode shows up.
There are three episodes total, but they show up only if you subscribe to the podcast.
Is there a way for the search results to show all of our episodes?

The feed at the URL you quote contains the tag
<itunes:new-feed-url>http://sermon.net/rss/thehillsfellowship/main</itunes:new-feed-url>
so the feed iTunes is now using is

and that is the one you should be updating - though in fact they are almost identical and it's possible that the method you are using updates them both.
The feed at http://sermon.net/rss/thehillsfellowship/main is valid and I can't see anything wrong with it. As you say, it can be subscribed to and shows all three episodes: but the Store page (and thus the search results) show only the first episode.
The Store should have updated by now: it's not unknown for the Store to get stuck and fail to update for several weeks: usually it eventually updates and I have no idea why it does this. It doesn't happen often, but I have seen the occasional complaint.
However there is another issue which may be relevant: although the date of the latest episode is July 17th, the feed was updated today:

This raises the possibility that there was something wrong with the feed before (hence the failure to update) but that whatever you've done today cleared it. That would indeed result in the three episodes showing on subscribing but not in the Store - it would take a couple of days or so to catch up.
If that is the case the Store should update in a day or two. If not, then it might update at some future date or it might not: I can't explain that.
I should at least give it two or three days and see what happens. Check the Store page using the link you gave, not the Search results as these often lag behind.
If you don't get a result after several days you could try iTunes Support, but I have to tell you that they don't have a good record for helpfulness and the chances are you won't get anywhere with them. Go to http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/ - click on 'Other iTunes Store Features' in the list and then on 'Podcasts'. You will see a link to either 'Express Lane', which will guide you eventually to some contact options, or you may see a link to email them. -

it was a typo: i'm on 10.6, on a MacPro.
i've actually found that it's actually, incredibly, impossible to sort spotlight results by size when in list view (it is possible when in icon view).
I find this nothing short than absurd, i would appreciate if Apple could explain me:
1- Why are they publicly talking about this wonderful new feature in their Snow Leopard pages, thus implcitily admitting that is something useful, and not making it useful where it would be used most: list view of the finder.
2- How am i supposed, for example, to find out between thousands of files which ones are, say, above 10MB, which is a typical task one would do when cleaning up space.
The answer is that i will simply have to use Houdaspot because the "most advanced operating system" does not let me know how big my files are.

Unicode issue for keyword SEARCH

In a report keyword SEARCH is used to find entry in internal table. basically this will find any value in internal table and will return sy-tabix as line number where the value exists.
Syntax: SEARCH itab FOR seek.
where itab is internal table and seek is variable which can contain any value to be searched in itab.
When i set 'Unicode check active' attribute in program attribute, while activating program i am getting error as: <b>Table "KEN3" must have a character line type (data type C, N, D, T, or STRING).</b>
When i try to add additons In byte mode and in charecter mode, i am getting incompability errors.
Is there any solution/alternative for this error. I am trying to make my program unicode compliant.

Alternatives for one-way pager?

This is not a question about a programming problem, but more about directions to search for. Hope you don't mind.
At my company we use pagers to get informed about states of systems we monitor.Sending a pager message costs money. I am asked to look at how much time I would need to develop an alternative for the pager system.
Before starting to think about time to develop, I would like to spend some time to research alternatives of the pager system. The advantage of a one-way pager is that the pager keeps on beeping until the user acknowledges the message. The company we use to send out the pager messages guaranties the pager messages are received by the recipient. The disadvantage is that no read receipt is send back to the server. So if the pager is turned off you will never know the message is received.
Alternatives for the pager system are:
1. Logging in into a server from a Midlet and regularly polling this server for information that otherwise would have been send to the pager. When such information is available, signal the user acoustically, until (s)he acknowledges receipt of the information (like the nagging the pager does);
2. Send a SMS with a read-confirmation-request. When the recipient reads the SMS containing the information, send a SMS back to the server;
Both methods use notify receipt/read back to a central server so you know the message is received. When such a notification is not received a message to the pager could be sent anyway.
So, my question is, do you know any other alternatives?

isn't there an alternative for dbms_utility.format_call_stack, since this will not work in server-side pl/sql when called from Oracle Forms. I'm searching something like a Data Dictionary View where I can retrieve this kind of information.

The use case is something like this :
We've several LDAP Servers specially for reporting purpose, based on the functionality as listed below members of "cn= Access Group" group will have access to the LDAP Server only, any other users will be redirected to other connection handlers and a different ldap within dsee dps. The group bind dn user as listed below will verify the membership.
Could you let me know how to accomplish this with Access Control as there will not be any re-routing among the Network Group if things are defined at the Access Level? Can we do this on OUD DPS level?

Heres the setup: I have an IOS 7 iPad 2 that I want to use 3G only for web searches/ emails while using an Airport Express generated wifi bubble (without any connected internett) to print web seraches via airprint to a wifi printer.
The problem: the ipad deafults to searching via the AE's wifi and vainly waits for the non existent interent to connect. It ignores the available 3G internet.
The workaround: a) turn off the AE's wifi, search the web via 3G b) once I have something to print, turn the wifi back on and print via airprint and the AE's wifi to the printer.
The question: Is there a way to turn off the AE's internet access. Using Airport utility, I have tried setting Bridge mode and static IPs to no avail. There is no turn-the-internet-off tick box.
In the ideal setup I would like the ipad 2 to search the web via 3G only (straight away versus waiting vainly for the AE to find it!!) and then print the results via the AE's wifi and airprint without having to toggle wifi on and off all the time.....
